St-Laurent Sports Bar Champs Reopens Under New Ownership | Eater Montreal

"Reopened yesterday after a years-long hiatus, the unassuming St-Laurent Boulevard sports bar has been reborn under new ownership led by filmmaker and sports writer Sarah Fobes, joined by Raphael Kerwin and five partners from Montreal’s music and nightlife scene. They’re intentionally moving away from the “usual bravado” of sports bars and aiming to keep the low-key, frill-free dive energy that made the spot a Main staple while ensuring everyone feels welcome through inclusive hiring and zero-tolerance customer-service policies. Fobes, a queer woman who’s covered sports for 15 years, describes loving the communal excitement of watching games in crowded bars and wants to recreate that safe, celebratory atmosphere. The bar occupies the building’s second floor (the space originally opened in the 1980s in a structure built just over 40 years ago) and has been given a modest facelift—VLTs were replaced with arcade games and the former kitchen was turned into a 25-person wine nook that will also screen games and can be reserved for private events, with the wine program put together by Mano Cornuto sommelier Rob Clarke. Food is no longer prepped on-site, but patrons can still expect sports on screens and cheap beer aplenty; Champs is now open at 3956 St-Laurent Boulevard and posts updates on its Instagram account for business hours." - Valerie Silva

First time in a queer bar. Asked the lady sitting next to me how her day was going, got told by the bartender I'm not allowed to talk to women since it's a lesbian bar. Sort of understandable I guess. We resume talking anyways because she was enjoying the conversation and I wasn't hitting on her. Bartender keeps cutting us both off to 'defend' her despite her saying she's fine. READ THE ROOM. Then got told by 2 patrons that men suck. Also sort of understandable I guess?? Don't think I'll be coming back here

I love champs so much. Every time I go here for queer events I have an amazing time. From markets, to drag shows, queer line dancing to even sports nights this place hosts a variety of events anyone would love! I’m especially a fan/regular for their spurs line dancing nights and the vibes are always on point. The staff is super friendly and this has become my go to bar in the city. (The addition of AC also is such a win for dance nights lol)

I am in love with this place ! The people are super nice, the service is great and the atmosphere is perfect. They have pool tables and plenty of space to sit and talk and make new friends. I highly recommend coming here, and they're super queer friendly. I'll definitely be coming back.

Google
Micheal was amazing!!! Total sweetheart but Cat was… something. She was already drunk ( à manager btw) , then she got really aggressive with me for no reason but again micheal being the Angel that he is just had a drink with me and calmed me down. We talked and I went home. Overall it’s a great bar but just be careful with Cat/Kat, other than that amazing people. 4 stars only for Micheal

Google
Fun and inclusive LGBT bar. Great vibe. Kat, the manager and bartender, is the best you’ll ever meet! Can’t wait to return on my next visit.

Google
The bartender was almost as pretty as her cocktail creations. Really busy bar with attentive service. Think her name was em or something. Lgtv friendly. Can’t wait to come back ;)

Google
We was inside and we buy ower drinks and waiting for ower turn for the billiardo … the barista was drunk she keep staring at me like 10 minutes after that she asked for my id and I give it to her after that she keeps staring at me and ask me to leave for no reason (racist ) very bad experience specially in front of people in all the bar …. You can’t be drunk at work and asking people to leave just because they are not in your mood

Google
I would recommend Gay Sex on the Beach. Would go back. Great pool and cheap beer. I felt very safe and supported :)

Yelp
This place is incredible. Such a welcoming environment and all the bartenders were so sweet. I wasn't there during one, but they were telling me about all the fun themed nights they do as well which my friends and I plan on going back to check out. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Yelp
The noise level in the bar area was quite high, making it challenging to have a conversation. This place looks like a dump.

Yelp
While visiting Montreal for my Step Daughter's graduation, she introduced us to this place as one of her favorites. All I have to say is, WOW, the staff there were so welcoming! Michael the bartender that served for the night was very attentive and seemed to always have time to check-in on us, even though the house was packed. An added treat was it was drag show night and I loved that the locals showed up to support the Artists as they performed. The energy in the place was amazing and show, though small was FIRE!!! This place is so diverse welcoming everyone on whatever night it is. They watch sports together, show the fights for those who want to see them, and EVEN put on what I say is the best drag show in town!! Thank you Champs Montreal for entertaining a couple Texans for the week. We will be back!!!

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood and wanted to watch the UFC pay per view (mcgregor, holly holm). Got there at 1130pm and place was packed. Cover price was $5 which i thought was fair. I've been here for NFL Sundays and yes they do carry all the games (no cover). There are beer specials (I got some random bottle for $4) so pricing seemed cheap. People were ordering food so it seemed edible. It may have been the staff was getting slammed by the crowd but at the end they were rude and even at times yelling at the clientele. One negative is that the bar is on the 2nd floor. It was a snowy Montreal winter night so people were slipping and falling on the staircase (including me) because the bar wasn't keeping that area clean and clear.

Yelp
This poor bar was a disaster a few years ago, but the new owners have put in the work to rescue this landmark, and it's quickly becoming one of the best bars in the area. They've got plenty of screens for Sports, but also great events and a surprisingly good DJ on the night I was there. Give 'em a visit!

Yelp
Our group of 4 American college guys visited this empty bar on New Years Day to watch the Rose Bowl on the large projector. The owner greeted us as soon as we came in with a big smile saying they have the best deals in town for American college students-$2 shots and $5 appetizers. When we sat down, there were no menus available. Instead, the waitress came over and told us that they have 2 burgers and 2 tacos left in stock. The food was great but took a while. As we we left, the jolly owner poured shots for us and we took shots with him on the house. Very friendly guy. Overall, we had a memorable experience here as it felt as though we randomly entered the owner's home and he welcomed us with open arms. Not sure if the bar was open in the first place.

Yelp
Good spot. My friend and I came for Sunday night football. Lots of TVs and three big projector screens. Great spot to watch a game. Cheap drinks and FREE FRIES!!! Super friendly owner and staff. I will definitely be back next time I visit. I will say, if your not accustomed to true sports bars the experience might be different to you. However, if you are, you will feel like I did like I was in my local watering hole back home.

Yelp
Randomly ended up here to watch les Flyers de Philadelphie beat the Canadiens. A nice spot even for Flyers fans. During the game, there was a sweet deal on two pitchers which came with five free wings. They were about two inches long and the hot sauce is properly hot. This is a big deal to me, as I always complain about wings everywhere I go for not being hot enough. There are TVs everywhere, including two huge screens stacked on top of each other with a couch-like seating arrangement pretty much turns that part of the bar into a small, sports-epileptic living room. Wouldn't hesitate to catch any game here. Add that, little goal nets in the urinals and the bartenders were incredibly friendly.

Jake R.

Yelp
Ever since the new change of ownership the place is unreal! Great place to watch any sports game.

Yelp
Oh yeah, I know all about sport bars, and sporting, and goals and such and am fully qualified to judge the caliber of Champs. Lies, obviously, but I have been to Champs several times over the years and always enjoyed the drinks specials, the funny friendly staff who don't mind if you are just sort of yelling randomly trying to fit in. There is a whole wall of tvs of various sizes playing all different kinds of games, so that's good, and the crowd is fun and this room above St Laurent is always cozy and if you've had enough shots the deep fried food tastes fine.

Yelp
I've appreciate simple - I don't value sloppy Atmosphere: A sports pub through and through. Lot's of various sports teams' paraphernalia, banners, and posters. The seating is spartan (watch out for loosely assembled chairs). This place looks like it's been through the wringer (quite a few times) and seemingly never has a chance to recover from it's hangover. Service: No one notices when its happy hour and the pitchers of beers are being passed around, but the service is sloppy, unprofessional, and meagre at best. Food: Bad - even by pub standards. Often the taste of the uncleaned grill lingers on the food. Don't try the coffee (unless you want to use it as a laxative!) go elsewhere

Yelp
Pretty cool Sports Bar full of sports paraphernalia and several TV.s that play several sports at the same time which is cool when you want to watch more than one game at a time. Service was decent, coffee fresh but strong(had to double creamed it) and drink I ordered mix well. All in all if there was a game I'd want to watch and hang with friends, I'd definitely consider going to Champs

Yelp
Erghhh. That sums up my experience here. I was in the area to watch the US v China Women's World Cup match. It was the same day/time as the Colombia v Argentina Copa game, so the place packed on the side of the bar that was showing Copa. The Women's cup side.. not so much. That was fine, I wasn't in the mood to deal with the crowd. Hidden on a second floor, this place isn't particularly appealing. It doesn't help that literally everything in this bar feels sticky. Chairs, tables, counters, everything. If the windows aren't opened, it gets hot as hell up there, but I never realized they opened until one clever dude couldn't take it anymore. I gave him a grateful thumbs up. With so many people there to watch games, the two servers there were completely overwhelmed. I watched the entire first half without being served, which is fine if you're looking to watch the game without paying anything. You could have just come here, sat down, watched, then left. Eventually the server came by and we ordered a pitcher of the house ale. I was expecting it to be crappy, but this was a really high level of craptacular. Like a Natty Ice had a baby with a.. geez, I don't even know. A bottle of seltzer water? It might be cheap, but definitely not worth the calories and taste. The server we had was honestly really nice, but the venue itself left much to be desired. The screens that were playing Copa had a horrendous feed. The stream was going at about 10 frames per second and I hadn't seen image quality that terrible since I watched bootleg anime VHS tapes from Chinatown. I wouldn't come back here to watch a game unless you like not being bothered. Sorry Champs. But thank you anyway, friendly server-man.

Yelp
Bar Champs is not just any ordinary sports bar, it's a sports bar with a lot of TVs and satellite receivers. The amount of satellite receivers they have on the roof looks borderline illegal, and you can actually see them if you look for it (from the outside, down the road). The other super sports bar aspect of Champs is their TVs. You'll notice the TVs covering up an entire wall the moment you walk in. We ended up watching at least 10 games in parallel on a single wall (and yes, it can be a little disorienting). How they managed to hang so many TVs up on one wall, is still one of the great mysteries of life. Bar Champs is the perfect place for any diehard European football fans, since the satellite and TV combo will guarantee awesomeness.

Yelp
Great bar to watch sports. They have many televisions showing all sorts of different things at once. I've been a couple times for playoff basketball, and I had a fantastic time! I was surprised to see people were losing their minds. Oh they have food too... Typical burgers, chicken wings, poutines, etc... I wouldn't go there for food alone. But combined with the excitement of your favorite sporting event and a gallon of beer, suddenly it taste a whole lot better.

Manon P.

Yelp
Terrible service, terrible music and place is quite gross. Avoid, there are a million better spots in the area.

Michael S.

Yelp
You remember the restaurant scene in the Goonies? That! Went to watch the Seattle v Kansas City match (Can you hear the wizards sing? No!) and wasn't even sure they were open. Asked for the match and the guy said it was too hard to find and gave me the remote. I was able to buy one beer before the game and then the staff were sleeping or checking their email and I couldn't get another. They seemed to fight a lot, too. I was the only one in there the entire afternoon and left as soon as I could. It felt like it was closed the entire time I was there, and I was pretty sure I was going to get murdered. I tripped on the stairs twice. I don't think they're up to code.

Janine T.

Yelp
Whatever, it's a sports bar. The food looked overdone and kinda gross but again, it's a sports bar so let's be real: we were there for the alcohol. They have lots of tv's, interesting people watching and the location is great. I don't really like sports, but I enjoyed mullet watching, cheap pints and the service was spot on as well.

Anna F.

Yelp
This was my favorite place I visited in Montreal! The place only had a few people there but the owner and workers were extremely nice. The prices were the best we found in town and the sangria was amazing!

Michael W.

Yelp
NFL, NBA, NCAA, EPL, UFC...list goes on! Luigi will be happy to oblige, even on a weekday afternoon! Honestly one of the friendliest bar owners out there. Feel free to bring in a sandwich and have some beer or even better, dig into some of Luigi's portugese patates!! So. Good.

Rodney T.

Yelp
This bar is great! The owner/ bartender is the nicest man youll ever meet. Great spot!

Yelp
Came here today for a bite to eat and a little bit of soccer-watching with a friend. Be aware, they do not take debit cards but there is an ATM machine in the place (today it was out of order). The glass of coke I ordered was a whopping $3.50!! Out-effing-rageous if you ask me. I tried their spaghetti while my friend ordered their 20 chicken wings. Spaghetti was alright, meat sauce could have been less spicy. But the reason I give this place two reviews is because of the service. Almost insultingly slow. One female server working the whole seating area. Oblivious. She forgot about our request for water and it took her nearly an hour to bring us the bill. My friend was becoming increasingly angry and I had already gotten up to tell her that we'd like the bill since it was obvious that she wasn't coming around to our table anytime soon. After getting her attention once more, she finally came and that's when they said that they didn't take debit cards and I found out that their ATM was broken. Someone managed to fix it quickly but it was just one more thing on top of all this, haha. I gave her a tip of one dollar since I didn't want to be too much of a jerk even though she deserved nothing. My friend says that service at this place had been much much better at other points. I believe him but I have no need to come back here anytime soon.
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
great place to watch a game, unless you want to drink. The two guys who worked here were so overwhelmed it was like nothing I've ever seen. Yes, every table was taken but we waited for a beer for like 30+ minutes before we just decided to leave. Some waited longer. If the service wasn't so terrible this would be a fun place.
google avatar

Emma N.

Yelp
We didn't enjoy Champs. We ordered a pitcher of beer that was alright, not the best for the price. The bartender was a forcibly friendly with a rude edge, and reminded us that the tip wasn't included in the price of our drinks (as if we didn't already know that). Wouldn't recommend if you want a fun, cool bar to go to. This one is lacking.
google avatar

Jean-Sebastien B.

Yelp
Good place for sports events, relax.
google avatar

Miriam H.

Yelp
I am pretty sure this place went out of business. It was dark at game time on a Sunday and when we walked back later in the night it was still closed and dark. This was really disappointing since we were looking for a place to watch the game during our visit from New Orleans. What a waste of a cab ride. The better cab ride was the one that brought us to Prime Time which was open, had the game and gave us amazing friendly service!
google avatar

Ben K.

Yelp
This is probably one of the best sports bars I've ever been too! Huge HDTV's everywhere (large HD projector). Even a HDTV in the men's room. Great food and free flowing beer! Terrific place to watch an MMA fight and I'm sure just about any other sporting event.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
Great bar for sporting events. No charge for UFC fights. Service is fast and good with a friendly staff. The bar food and beer is typical of such a place not great, not bad but, the atmosphere and overall vibe of the place make up for it.
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
bartender/waiter (i sat at the bar) seemed a little sluggish ... or hungover? which i can't really point the finger at - since i've been there before. however, my salad was bland and the veggies seemed old - although finding fresh produce in montreal in late december is non-existent - and also, one might ask why the hell am i ordering a salad at a sports bar?? that's a very good point, actually. for beverages, i started off with a bloody mary, which surprisingly, she didn't know what it was ... and she asked me if i mean't a bloody ceasar - which apparently is the exact same thing as a bloody mary, however, she had no horseradish and no worcester sauce, but thank god she had tabasco sauce and pepper! the only bright spot was i tried a local montreal beer on tap called "chanvre." it was awesome and it's a hemp beer!!

Lizeth B.

Yelp
Horrible service, the staff is rude, The AC was not working and they had blue screen in some of the TV. I do no recommend this place.
