Next Gen Indian Is the Most Exciting Food Movement in Toronto

"A jewel-box restaurant on Toronto Street that channels the southwest coast of the subcontinent, this venue emphasizes Portuguese-infused Goan flavors across a carefully composed seven-course tasting menu. Under veteran restaurateur Hemant Bhagwani, dishes such as a Goan Prawn Curry highlight coastal spice profiles and a theatrical, tightly curated dining experience rooted in regional tradition." - Shinan Govani

Bar Goa had been whispering my name for a while and when I finally followed the hint it did not disappoint. We arrived without a reservation yet were welcomed as if expected all along. A table appeared and so did the promise of a good evening. The answers came course by course. Butter chicken rich and comforting. Charcoal dal deep and smoky. Chicken pepper fry tucked cleverly into a kulcha taco that made you pause and smile. Mango lassi cool and soothing. Naan arriving warm as if it knew its role was essential. Service moved with quiet confidence polite attentive and never rushed. The kind that lets you enjoy the puzzle unfolding on your plate. Only a few clues left unsolved. A table that could use a quick refresh between courses. A dessert menu that might benefit from paper instead of plastic and a careful pass for spelling and grammar. Small details yes but details matter when the bar is set at a Michelin level. I would return without hesitation curious to see what the next visit reveals.

Nice upscale atmosphere to enjoy Indian food. My friends and I loved the chaat and the display with the dry ice. The butter chicken was good but standard, and I enjoyed the paratha but wished the sides came in a larger portion. Service was friendly.

Absolutely loved our experience at Bar Goa! It’s a fabulous date-night restaurant with a really nice ambience, fantastic presentation, and exceptional food quality. The flavours were light, unique, and beautifully balanced. The paneer is made in-house, and you can truly taste the difference — the paneer tikka and lasuni palak paneer were standouts. Pair that with their chilli garlic naan and you’re in for a treat. We were also surprised with a Parle-G cheesecake for my wife’s birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch and made the evening even more special. A big shoutout to Alex, our server, who was attentive, warm, and made the experience memorable. Highly recommend this Michelin Guide restaurant to anyone who loves Indian cuisine or is looking for a beautiful night out. We’ll definitely be back!

Had a phenomenal experience performing as a DJ at Bar Goa. The food was excellent, and the entire setup process was smooth thanks to the supportive and well-organized team. The management made me feel very comfortable as an artist, which really helps bring out the best performance. Special shoutout to Priya, who was fantastic and extremely supportive, and Vino, truly a king of bartenders—great energy and professionalism. The atmosphere, management, and overall vibe were top-notch. I felt highly motivated and would be more than happy to perform again in the future if any opportunities come up. Highly recommended.

I was ready to write this place off completely but dal makhani was exquisite. It had a smokiness I havent experienced elsewhere. Everything else - the other mains, the service, the dessert fell short. The fusion concept doesn’t really work - the menu comes off as confused, the appetizers are fancy/ not family style but the mains are. Service was so dreadfully slow and the servers weren’t warm or friendly, the way I’d expect for a resto on the Michelin guide. Only reason I’d come back is dal makhani for takeaway

Shashank was truly one of the nicest hosts I’ve ever met. He was welcoming from the moment we walked in and made us feel completely at home. His menu suggestions were spot on, every single dish he recommended ended up being our favourite. You can tell he genuinely cares about giving guests a great experience. Thank you, Shashank, for making our visit so memorable. We’ll definitely be back because of you!

This isn’t really Indian food and it is NOT a restaurant for people who are passionate about Indian food. So those of you who are, don’t go here. I understand they’re trying to interpret it or whatever but it’s a pretty bad interpretation and kind of kills the essence of it. Let’s go dish by dish: Chaat - I don’t know, why do you need the tart? Why can’t it be a normal chaat? But also - replacing pomegranate with blueberries is kind of a crime but sure. Also this is a dish meant to be shared so you get ONE golguppa per person. Anyone familiar with golguppe knows that you NEVER eat just one. You don’t even just eat one plate. So that was pretty offensive. Paneer tikka - literally just fried in butter. I don’t think they marinated it at all. So once again, that’s not a paneer tikka. They didn’t serve any chutney with it so…sure whatever. Keema pav - it’s made with bison meat instead of goat meat but ok whatever. This was still ok. Very tiny quantity of keema compared to the bread. A little too spicy if you look at the roots of the dish. I couldn’t even bear to order anything else from the menu. It made me so sad. They have something called lobster seekh kebab - um WHAT? Seekh kabab is meant to be with land animals only. There were lots of other such stuff which was…sure if you don’t care about Indian food, destroy it, sure. But as an Indian food connoisseur, I was very disappointed. Service is also pretty bad for a “Michelin” star. Like k. Sure. Will not be back.

Went with a few friends and we ordered for the table to share. Lamb chops and the goat curry are tasty! The appetizers were good - naan had a nice kick to it. Each dish is well presented. However our group was disappointed by lal gosht, it was too bland. It's on the expensive end - expected each dish to be top notch at this price point. This place is more of an experience for the ambiance and presentation.

Yelp
Awesome spot! Got the lunch prix fixe menu for $35. Tried the paneer, prawn toast, and butter chicken - and ordered a side of chaat. Portion sizes were on the smaller side but with the number of dishes was full by the end. The food was really really good. The meat is halal as well (confirmed with the staff verbally). The food dishes taste comforting but elevated in presentation and variety. It's a small spot but the ambience is great. I would come back to try other dishes!

Yelp
Great tasting menu that allowed us to sample all of the chef's creations for a reasonable price (especially with a Michelin nod). Service was excellent and staff explained each course in great detail. Some spice to a few of the dishes which was appreciated. Atmosphere was quiet and pleasant, however we had a very early reservation. 5 stars based on food, service and value. Only complaint is that you need a key to use the restroom which is awkward and inconvenient, but doesn't detract from yumminess.

Yelp
A unique and tasty experience! I tried their "omakase" menu which had a selection from their menu along with a larger sized main at the end. The menu offers an alcohol pairing with the dishes for a small up-charge. One of the dishes included a small amount of beer, but for non-drinkers they swap it for a non-alcoholic selection. Everything was fantastic, even when some dishes caused our mouths to catch on fire we still enjoyed it and finished everything to the last crumb. Our server was great, she kept the dishes coming as we finished each one. I was surprised how small space was, the flavors were so large, I don't know how such a small dining area can contain them! I look forward to coming back.

Yelp
I had really high hopes from this place since its Michelin recommended so I was quite upset when I didn't like the food too much. Their staff was polite but the music wasn't right for the place. We ordered the malai kofta which was a little too salty (it already comes with one naan on the side so be mindful of that when you're placing the order). The paneer tikka wasn't bad, but a too oily. I didn't like their mushroom starters which were supposed to be one of their signature dishes. In terms of things I liked - they gave a little table (of sorts) to keep your bag which was nice. I also liked their desserts which made up for the food tbh. All in all - I think they're potential for this place to be better but I wasnt a fan in this visit.

Yelp
The entrance to the restaurant is inside the larger building. The interior was very clean and felt like everything was new. The owners definitely spent time decorating the restaurant. I saw many couples on dates here. My 3 friends and I ended up sharing butter chicken and the Chefs Platter for 2. Butter chicken was creamy and delicious. It went well with the rice and naan (both ordered separately). My favorite was the lamb chop. It didn't the overwhelming lamb smell you can get with some dishes. Our server was attentive and friendly. Everything was delicious but a bit pricey. I would recommend if you know your Indian food and can appreciate the dishes for the price.

Yelp
The restaurant seems so lounge-like that my expectations for their food was low. Another surprise, their 3-course Summerlicious menu ($55) was actually good... and they don't hold back on the spices. The prawn balchao toast looked rather tame, until I bite into the soft bread and was greeted by the diced shrimp covered in a tangy fiery chili. Luckily, there were cold shots of beer to help soothe the tongue, which we're told to have a sip of with every bite. Um yes, you'll need it. For those who don't love the spice, their lamb chop was delicious, cooked to medium and covered in a salty herb crust. Accompanied with three sauces (fenugreek mint, strawberry chili chutney, and Bengali mustard), they were all very different condiments. Personally, I found the meat was flavorful enough and tasted best without any sauce. The lamb chop was better than the charcoal smoked tandoori steak, which was overdone and the salan (a peanut and chili curry) so spicy that I just couldn't enjoy the beef. Despite trying to savour the sauce's elements, I had to reach for cold ice water after the first bite. Bar Goa should consider putting chili ratings on their menu to warn customers. Thankfully, the branzino fish curry was tasty without the overwhelming heat. Its flavours stem from the aromatic ingredients used in the coconut curry and finishes with a touch of spice. I loved slathering the sauce on top of the basmati rice, almost finishing the entire bowl. You'll want the rice for the sautéed greens as well; on their own it was much too salty. Unlike the steak, the branzino was cooked well, left flaky and as a full filet. Still, it needed something acidic, even a simple squeeze of lime, to bring a freshness to the dish. The mango lassi panna cotta was a popular choice for dessert. At first bite, it reminded me of a mango pudding found in Chinese restaurants, except rather than being doused in evaporated milk, the dairy was already incorporated into the panna cotta, so it tasted creamier. It was a hit for our group. Being called Bar Goa, I wasn't surprised that they offered a host of cocktails. They're certainly unique, so you'll want to bring a group to experiment. The royal yacht club Goa ($25) was refreshing from the peach, lemon, and mint despite having a host of alcohols (gin, Hennessey, and champagne) that had me feeling good after one. More up my alley than the panni puri martini ($23), which was too salty and water down tasting for my liking. At least the drink arrives with panni puri for snacking.

Yelp
We had our reservations here far in advance to be able to celebrate Diwali together - we were a group of 3! We decided to try a bit of everything and balanced our pallets with spicy and savoury. We started with the chat & pani puri - the show and presentation was amazing. We also got the mushroom appetizer- the broth they serve it with was amazing! The other one we had was the spicy prawns - it was TOO spicy for my pallet - I was forewarned but still went for it. Our last appetizer was the paneer - it was freshly made but the favour wasn't consistent - I feel it needed to be marinated more. Onto the mains - the butter chicken was good but nothing overly wow. For the vegetarian dish the daal was recommended, however we went for something else and regretted it. The garlic naans were light and fluffy! The dessert was okay - the coconut ice cream made it. For a beverage - I had the martini, I didn't enjoy it. Overall from service to ambiance - it was great. Where we were seated the music was way too loud and at times I felt I was screaming at my friends across the table.

Yelp
We went for the tasting menu, one vegetarian and one non-vegetarian. Both were fantastic. Our server Rosy gave detailed descriptions of each course and when asked specific questions she had the answer ready. The restaurant is small but welcoming maybe seats 30-40. Tables are comfortable. The chief was pleasant but busy, so we only had time for a quick thank you. This is not a quick inexpensive meal 90 minutes for 7 courses and it ran $200 CD but worth every penny. The butter chicken was the best I have ever had. I see why they have a Michelin star.

Yelp
This was my first time here. The place is really nice, chairs are very comfortable, tables are a little small, but it kinda compliments the tiny portions this restaurant serves. We ordered our food, and waiting about 25 minutes for it to come. The first dish was the shrimp toast and beer. The beer was very light, but the food was quite spicy, and had an overwhelming amount of spices, a little strong and over seasoned for my liking, I wasn't able to taste the shrimp at all. Next was the roasted paneer, solid pieces, nice and firm, on the flavourless side. But nice yellow hue. The butter chicken was my favourite of the three items we ordered for food, lots of thick and rich gravy, scant amounts of chicken. You have to order the bread/rice separately, so we tried the three different kinds of roti, once piece was $6. So about 4 pieces should be good for this dish. We liked the paratha, it was well flavoured, and crispy on the outside, with a soft inside. We tried the mango lassi as well, this was a sour lassi, with spices, which I didn't enjoy much, I was really hoping for a sweet lassi, but this one was made with Greek yogurt and real mango pulp, so if you want something salty I'm sure this will hit the spot for you. Not in any rush to go back to this restaurant to be completely honest.

Yelp
The food was undoubtedly great. Lots of spices and flavors - we really enjoyed the tasting menu. I got the vegetarian tasting menu and my partner got the non-veg tasting menu. The entire experience last around 2 hours. The restaurant needs to update their website with the correct hours and menu - other than that, great experience.

Yelp
Ordered the non-vegetarian omakase menu. Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Presentation of food (especially the berry chaat) were beautfiul, however, the flavours of every dish were underwhelming. Chicken skewer only had 1 small piece on each stick. I guess they were going for a "fine dining" portion, however, it wasted so much of the delicious sauce on the plate only having 1 bite of chicken. A minimum of 2 per skewer would be more reasonable and make more sense. The three brown dishes had very similar flavour profiles but served with different types of bread. Not distinct enough from each other to 'wow' us. Berry chaat was fun with many ingredients packed in, yet somehow didn't taste like much. The tacos were the only thing that impressed us. I would go back just for these tacos! Good flavours and a good kick. The main entrees butter chicken, naan, dahl... They were good but pretty standard without much of a twist. The naan and dahl were yummy. Desserts were disappointing. It felt like the ones at an AYCE buffet. 3 mini slices without any impressive flavours. Everything about this restaurant experience was good (interior, service, ambiance)...except the food. Really wanted to like it. Would I return? No.

Yelp
This was some of the best Indian food I've eaten in Toronto. The Lamb Chops were amazing, the Garlic Naan was light and crispy, and the Chat was very flavourful (especially the spicy water for the Pani Puri). Warm, modern ambiance that made me feel like I'm in Goa! A great spot to go for drinks, or a fancy dinner. Waiters were very attentive, and the bar tender even insisted I try his signature drink - a Paan Old Fashion which was delicious. I will be returning to Bar Goa again soon!
