Google
Visiting Acadia National Park for the first time from NYC and the staff at this shop made all the difference in my trip. They were so helpful, encouraging, and kind. One of the workers, I unfortunately don’t remember her name, helped me plan out my entire hike for the day so it would be more efficient for me with my e-bike. Forever grateful to have stumbled upon them and would recommend to anyone!

Google
This bike ride was an incredible experience!!! Three of us got e-bikes for the carriage roads and I also got a trailer for my puppy too. Everyone at the shop was friendly and the process to reserve, pick up and drop off was super easy. We had so much fun. The ride was easy and the scenery was beautiful. Would absolutely do this again :)

Google
Rented two gravel Bikes from Bar Harbor Bicycling Shop. Made the reservation online. It was quick and easy. The staff was friendly and helpful and provided recommended routes. The bikes were ready for us when we arrived. They were high-quality bikes. We had a beautiful day to ride around Acadia.

Google
Highly recommend bike rental - my family or 7 total rented from 9-1pm. Half day is more than enough time - just be aware that your rental starts right at 9am, so if you don’t get through the check in line / start biking until 9:30am - they still tell you the bike needs to be back by 1:30. E-bikes have 3 levels of assistance which was great because everyone could go at their own pace and select their level of effort. Good activity for groups with people of different ages and fitness levels. Carriage loop road to Jordan pond house and back took up the 9-1pm rental.

Google
Rented Premium Gravel bike. Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Even have me some great recommendations about best time of day to attempt Cadillac mountain to avoid traffic. I was also able to pickup the bike the day prior at end of day (for an extra fee) so I'm can start riding early in the day the following day.

Google
THIS PLACE IS FABULOUS! We chose to walk in and rent from them because we saw people having fun on their bikes in Acadia, and the reviews online sounded strong. I hadn’t been on a bike in about 6 years, and I had never tried an e-bike before, so wasn’t even sure I would rent that day, but they made it so easy and comfortable that I was sold. They sized us properly on the bikes and adjusted seats, helped me get the helmet fit right, and gave us a great lesson on using the bike in about 5 minutes (so easy to ride and shift!). They even strapped a gear bag on the bike for our food/extra jackets. They provided a map of the carriage trails to use in the park and directions on the quickest, safest way to the nearest carriage road entrance from their shop (just a few minutes ride on sidewalks and then through quiet neighborhood to back entrance into park). We rode all day on the carriage roads (27 miles!) and it felt like nothing thanks to my trusty e-bike boost! This is the BEST way to explore the park and an absolutely fabulous experience!

Google
What a remarkable shop! When I reserved two premium gravel bikes for several days of cycling through Acadia, I hardly expected the machines that we were given. High-end Cervelo carbon fiber bikes with electronic shifting, perfectly tuned, spotless and ready to roll. A mechanic cheerfully popped on the SPD pedals we brought with us and we were off, departing from BHBS for the park. We felt like we lived on those bikes for three incredible days. We popped by the shop on the third morning for fresh shifter batteries and a tire top-off. Return was effortless and gave us a chance to browse the well-merchandised shop. We also had an enjoyable chat with owner Peter who definitely knows a thing or two about cycling.

Blake W.

Google
Shop was great. My wife and I rented gravel bikes for the day here. The bikes were well serviced and worked flawlessly. They did a great job of making sure we understood where to go and gave great recommendations. Staff was friendly and helpful. Will certainly rent here again.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this bicycle shop. Rented two e-bikes for ride the carriage roads in Acadia NP and the entire process went smoothly. The e-bikes were GAME CHANGING on the granite gravel roads. Half day (4 hrs) rental was more than enough time to ride through the Witch Hole Pond, Eagle Lake, and Around Mountain Carriage Roads. We also saw a freakin' wild turkey along one of the roads and it flew!!! Acadia was beautiful and this rental shop was amazing. Will come back here if we are ever back.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience from start to finish renting bikes for a half day. We were able to reserve well in advance, and everything was ready upon arrival. We were told our time to have them back, but told there's a little wiggle room. We got a quick tutorial (for those who weren't 100% sure on bikes), got our helmet and maps, were given some amazing advice on different routes, and we were on our way. The bikes are pretty good hybrid style TREK bikes and seem well maintained. There are so many scenic areas to stop and enjoy. Now, there were times we wish we had the ebikes because we could have explored a little more, and we would have rented them, but we did the real deal!! Our group split up, so three of us arrived back first and returned our items. I purchased a few items and the owner was there to talk bike shops with me. She was super friendly and engaging. Henry (the black lab) was also there to greet you and give you a little nose kiss, kind of a high five for finishing the day! This is a business on a schedule, so while they offer some wiggle room on returning the bikes (except at closing time), I find it rude to take them up on it (unless you get lost or stuck somehow). So we made sure be timely. This was a wonderful experience, and I would 100% rent from them again!

Yelp
In our search to find a great place to rent E-Bikes for a ride on the Carriage Roads of Acadia National Park, we found (through an online search via Yelp) a very experienced and reputable vendor - Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop. After we placed our reservation online, we stopped by to meet them and see the shop. We were warmly cared for by the owners Peter and Jill and their expert staff of mechanics. This is a true bicycle shop - with a 46 year history in Bar Harbor - that's frequented by true, serious bikers and those seeking rentals, like us. They cater well to both. They rent top quality, well maintained Trek and Specialized brand E-Bikes. They're located in Bar Harbor and have a "family-friendly route" to the Carriage Roads. To acquaint ourselves with it before we ride E-Bikes later in our trip we drove the route and it's an easy route out of Bar Harbor - truly "family friendly" as they stated. We're looking forward to our E-Bike experience and have high confidence that Peter, Jill, and their staff will care for us well.

Yelp
*Renter Beware*: Don't be Late Returning Your Bikes!! The owner was unnecessarily verbally aggressive when we returned bikes 26 minutes late (although the shop didn't close until 5 pm). Yes, their policy states bikes are to be returned one hour before close. Yes, we were late. It was ABSOLUTELY unnecessary for the Owner to act so deeply unprofessional. This soured the end of a truly lovely day in Acadia. Oh, did I mention the $25/per bike fee the Owner charged for our tardiness on top of her hostile behavior? I myself am a business owner. I also have to charge customers when they miss their appointments. Customer service matters, especially when situations don't go perfectly. There's a way to handle things with respect, and that was missing here. I hope the owner considers treating future customers with more courtesy and professionalism. There are many options for ebike rentals in Bar Harbor. I won't be returning to Bar Harbor Bicycles.

Kim C.

Yelp
The process for picking up the bikes needs to be improved here. The morning bike rentals are from 9am-1pm, and if you return them late, you will get a fine. This makes perfect sense; however, this bike shop opens at 9am and there was a half hour wait to pick up the bike despite getting there before it opened. The process for picking up the bikes is very slow as they don't have many people working the counters, and it does not seem fair that you lose part of your riding time because you're waiting in line. Additionally, the treads on the tires were worn down, which is not safe if you have slippery paths or dirt roads.

Wendy L.

Yelp
Considering Acadia National Park has some of the best gravel bike paths I've ever encountered, I think it's an absolute must to experience the park via biking. If you're out of shape or have a bad back/knee, then I highly recommend getting an electric bike to help you do the hillier parts of the trails. We did half a days biking and got our Trek bikes from this shop. The whole experience was easy and staff was helpful. My particular bike had extremely squeaky breaks that I didn't find out until I was already on the road. Overall though the bikes were a comfortable ride and half a days rental was the perfect amount of time for what we wanted to do.

Yelp
Professional and friendly staff. Opens at 9am -- arrive at opening if you haven't reserved bikes in advance. Great quality bikes! All have multiple gears, none have baskets. They have regular bikes, kids bikes, e-bikes, and a few additional add ons such as gel seats, tag a longs, and car racks. Prices may vary for these add ons depending on if you're also renting a bike. There's also an option to rent a bike for a week. $30 for a half day (4 hours), $35 for a full day (anytime over 4 hours). Must return bikes by 4:30pm or else there's a $10 late fee. Helmets and bike locks are free to rent with a bike rental.

Yelp
Great bike shop and very friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming staff! We rented two bikes and a baby carrier from them and all the equipment was well maintained.

Yelp
Awesome rental shop in Bar Harbor if you're looking for traditional or e-bikes for touring the carriage roads at Arcadia National Park! Half day (4 hour rental) of the e-bike will set you back $60 while the 8 hour rental is $100. I went with the e-bikes and that has proven to be a great choice! The e-bikes here are mostly Specialized Como model, which is really really nice. With these bikes, we're able to navigate the hilly/mountain terrain of Arcadia National Park with moderate effort. With pit stops to take photos (spectacular view inside the park) and a lunch break, we're able to cover 32+ miles and 2000 ft of ascent in 4 hours. This option will definitely allow you to see a huge part of the carriage trail but if you have some time on your hand, I would suggest opting for the 8-hour rental. The staff at this shop is extremely friendly and will walk you through the functionalities of the e-bike before you take off! Note this shop does get extremely busy and they do have a limited stock of e-bikes. If I were you, I would start waiting in line around 8:30 (shop opens up at 9) if you want to ensure you can get one. Happy riding!

Yelp
Fantastic experience with a knowledgeable team and quality equipment. We walked up on a busy Thursday and were able to rent a couple E-bikes for an awesome trip through Acadia. The directions and recommendations for our ride were spot on and made for a great day. We were able to get 32 miles in about 5 hours. Highly recommend this shop and their team

Rob W.

Yelp
Wow, shop manager was angry and annoyed by our mere presence. We seemed to ruin her day by simply asking to rent a bike. When we arrived 15 minutes late on our 3 hour rental, she secretly double charged us for a full day rental. We called to inquire how our 3 hours turned into a full day rental. The manager berated us and blamed us for the problem. Greedy shop, more interested in milking every penny from you over customer satisfaction and experience. They could at least smile while they rob you.

Yelp
Borrowed: two single bikes with one tagalong attachment. Service: professional, courteous, prompt We rented these bicycles during off-season and though the typical terrain was closed due to a huge rain storm prior to this day causing paths to be unrideable/muddy, the owner took his time to guide us through some alternative paths which we enjoyed on a sunny, windy day. Though the temps were low because we did not have enough layers, we thoroughly enjoyed the ride up Acadia Mountain and took many beautiful pictures along the way. My 7 yr old enjoyed riding the tagalong and felt as if he was part of the process. Pricing for rentals were $25 per single bike, and I believe $18 for the tagalong. This was for a 4 hr time window. We took ours out for about two. Though this terrain was not ideal because there was a huge incline, I would definitely return due to their service and desire to try the typically advised route during their warmer season.

Yelp
The shop's location near Acadia National Park was convenient, making it easy to explore the beautiful surroundings. The e-bikes provided an excellent riding experience and were user-friendly. The person at the check-in desk was very helpful. He gave us a map, which he marked to show us riding options so we could confidently explore the area. The experience was marred by the unhelpful and unfriendly attitude of the staff member handling the bikes. He yelled at us and the others in line. We weren't informed about the battery life, which made us anxious about whether the charge would last throughout our ride. I recommend this store but be bold and ask questions even if the employee is gruff and uninterested in helping you; getting information is not just for convenience but also a safety consideration.

Yelp
Due to poor planning on my part, I arrived in Bar Harbor without having secured a bike rental for my husband and I to explore the carriage roads of Acadia. Since it was late in the season I assumed we would be able to get a traditional bike, but I really wanted an e-bike. 1) I had never done an e-bike, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try one. 2) I wanted to enjoy Acadia. Not sweat through Acadia. After already checking with a couple other bike rental shops and learning that their e-bikes were all booked up, I started to worry! Luckily, I stumbled upon the website for Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop, and it had a big notice on the webpage that stated for the rest of the 2022 season they would not be accepting reservations and only doing rentals on a first come, first serve basis. Maybe I could still make my dreams come true! So my husband and I showed up about 20-30 minutes before opening and hoped we would be able to snag an e-bike. Success! We were able to rent 2 lovely e-bikes that assisted us with pedaling 20 miles through the beautiful woods on the carriage roads! Only $100 per bike for the full day! The folks at the shop were pretty helpful with showing us the way from the shop to the park with a handy map. It wasn't too far at all, and the shop itself is super close to the entrance of Acadia! I would definitely rent a bike again from this shop!

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing and it was 100% the reason for the highlight of my vacation in Bar Harbor Maine. A friend of mine suggested that I rent an electric bike to cruise around the carriage roads of Acadia Park. I found this shop online and submitted a request for three bikes for the Monday of my vacation week. The shop called me back to confirm the order and let me know that I would be charged after we returned the bikes after our trip. Holy shit this was so much fun. We rented class one electric bikes which require you to pedal and I was originally a little nervous about peddling around the park because I'm not a fucking biker. But the little boost that the engine gives to these bikes made cruising around a 30 mile loop seamless. I pretty much thought I was gonna die around the 22nd mile but I completely made it. My husband and son and I had the absolute greatest experience the morning that we use these bikes, it was so much fun, highlight of my trip. I'm repeating myself but I repeat myself when I'm excited about some thing! The staff here was incredible I would've rented bikes several more times that week if I could have, I now want to buy one for my own use back home in New Jersey and I just loved every single thing about the shop and the experiences that they offer.

Jo C.

Yelp
The staff were really helpful and let me test two different bikes. The e-bikes are in great condition. The older ones have smoother power assist but the new ones are more powerful and have a longer battery life.
google avatar

Gina L.

Yelp
Super great staff, and extremely helpful in getting me and my family bikes, as well as recommending what trails to take. Super fair prices, and definitely gives you a different look at Acadia. Free day-long parking a short walk away on West Street!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Awesome choice for those visiting Acadia/Bar Harbor and looking for a different way to enjoy views. It's the perfect way to traverse the Carriage Roads. They're located right at the entrance to Bar Harbor if you came the way from the Park visitor center and was very easy to find. Their rates are quite decent $25 for a single day rental and their hours are quite flexible opening at 8AM. I believe they rent out car racks too but we brought our own to save some time traveling to and from the trails. the checkout process was very easy and quick and its quite nice they let us try out all the different sizes before deciding on the ones we like. We had no problems with the bikes through the day and returning them was very easy as well. Highly highly recommended for those plan to visit Acadia even for beginner bikers like me it was quite an awesome ride. Definitely saved us a lot of headaches by going with their bike rental services.

Beth M.

Yelp
These guys saved my bike tour. They fixed my sticky shifting on the spot for a very reasonable price. Very happy customer :)
google avatar

Pablo G.

Yelp
Excellent customer service unlike competitor down the street. Bikes were available same day without reservation. Staff were attentive and personable.
google avatar

Aaron L.

Yelp
Absolutely above and beyond service. We needed a wheelchair wheel replaced and although they dont normally service them, they were able to put together a functional wheel. Only thing they didnt have was a bolt to attach it to. Now the wheelchair can survive hikes in Acadia! Saved our vacation and if I could rate them 6/5 I would.
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
Great shop for rentals. Equipment is good and higher quality bike/helmets with better quality than average rentals. Saddles are actually comfortable!!! Reasonable prices. Do call ahead to reserve during peak season otherwise they rent out by mid morning. Convenient location that's a easy hop and skip to the carriage roads.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick look at my MTB tire, they reset the tubeless bead and did it for free while I waited. Great guys!

Marissa D.

Yelp
Half the price of the places next door. Very friendly staff. Will rent again from here.
google avatar

Ronda S.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite activities I have done on a family vacation. We rented bikes, took the bus to Acadia and then rode around lakes, along shadowed, green carriage roads with occasional spectacular views out to the ocean or various lakes. At one point my son and hubby went back to fill my son's water and I went ahead and there were enough occasional fellow bikers that I felt safe, but few enough that I could enjoy some quiet solitude as I rode up and down the alternately shaded and sunny path. Stopped midway and ate the packed sandwiches we had brought as we looked out on one of the lakes. I would totally do this again. Make sure to do your research and pick carriage roads that match your ability and have a good map that has the carriage road numbers. Great activity for an active family with older kids.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Great bikes and great service. We had a great experience with the staff and so much fun with the bikes we went back and did it again a few days later. The electric bikes were a blast, and it was nice not having to worry about hills or range.
google avatar

KJ C.

Yelp
Great place to rent a bike for riding the Carriage Roads. The prices are the best in the area and the road bike (not electric) was great quality. The service was fantastic, the younger man with longish hair helped me out with all my Acadia questions. Be sure to get here right when they open at 9 am, because there was a little bit of a line to get the bike (a good sign I guess? very popular place!)

James H.

Yelp
Great help preparing bikes from the staff along with great insight the trails in Acadia

Lisa G.

Yelp
We rented 2 bikes and had a great time riding through Acadia's carriage trails. They provide helmets, gave quick tutorial regarding shifting and a map to the trail. Affordable price for either half or full day rental. Bikes appeared well maintained

Sarah M.

Yelp
We had the time of our life riding ebikes on the carriage roads! The scenery was really beautiful with all the fall colors and the ebikes let us cover more territory. Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop was efficient and friendly and we were so glad we were able to get bikes from them!
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
We rented two standard bikes from this shop to ride on the carriage roads in Acadia. Overall, a good experience with this shop. We did have an issue with one of the bike seats slipping, and the shop gave us a deal on the rental when we came back. (Thank you, we really appreciate that kind of proactive service.) All of the workers seem to love their job-- a great sign. Next time, we will be getting the ebikes: word to the wise, no matter how good a cyclist you think you are, those hills will still kick your butt and wreck your quads. Just get the ebikes.

Carrie B.

Yelp
We scheduled a bicycle ride for 13 people and an infant. They had our bikes ready to go and we had enjoyable morning. I would highly recommend them. But make sure you reserve in advance.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Helped fix my friend's wheelchair last-minute despite not usually servicing wheelchairs. Nicest people, excellent service, advice and conversation.
google avatar

K K.

Yelp
Excellent service, very patient team members - high quality bikes and accessories...reasonable prices.. they opened new boxes to provide us with new accessories also we had to return a bikes within minutes as one the toddler was not comfortable riding a bike - they happily provided us with refund without asking... this was my second time renting bikes from them and i would do it again without hesitation ....a big thank you !
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
We rented bikes for a few hours to ride the carriage trails. They open at 9 and when we arrived at 9:15 there was already a line, but there were several workers so it didn't take too long. I didn't make a reservation beforehand and luckily they had some bikes available for walks ups. when we returned a few hours later there no almost none left and a worker took my bike immediately and gave it to a person waiting. The bikes were in generally ok condition, there were some squeaks but it was nice to ride a Trek Verve which is the same bike I have at home. We did bring our own helmets although they have offer them for free with rentals. I would rent from here again but would make a reservation next time.

Ellen M.

Yelp
After two, yes two, flat tires biking the Carriage Roads, Al and Jeff were our saviors. With two new tires and some tweaking to my bike, we we're back on the trails the next day. They were awesome!!!

John G.

Yelp
When they say they close at 5, they mean they close at 5. I showed up at 5:11 and got charged $45 for being 11 minutes late. They didn't even think twice about it. Not a good way to treat your customers.
google avatar

Lori W.

Yelp
What a great experience! My amazing fiancé reserved two bikes and a rack for our bike ride through Acadia National Park, the carriage trails. We were impressed by the friendly, professional and helpful staff. A new young employee took the time to put our pedals on the rental bikes and mount the rack on the rental car. The bikes were a bit heavier than we use (triathlon) but the bikes we rented were best suited for our type of riding and they were in great condition. I thought I would escape without buying a jersey...but the lobster jersey...seriously...I would be curious how many they have sold. At $100, a bit steep but I went ahead and ordered it. They run small so they special ordered it for me and I have already worn it here in Northern VA. Have gotten some great comments too! Wonderful store and people!

Mark L.

Yelp
Rented e-Bikes for the day & had blast covering 36-miles of the Carriage Trails. Service & staff were friendly & helpful!

Brian P.

Yelp
Bikes were well maintained. The issue is there hours. Our best biking excursion was to Schoodic Point from Bar Harbor via the ferry. They open just after the 9:00 am ferry and close just before the 4:30 gets back so you only have a few hours on the peninsula. The place right down the street has figured this out and that would have been a much better choice.
google avatar

Rick D.

Yelp
Efficient process for the two of us as walk-ins. Quickly registered, charged and fit bikes. Helmets and bikes were good quality, clean and in nice shape. Also, closest to edge of town we discovered, which is closest to dedicated bike/walking paths [64 miles without crossing a road]. Pricing same as other shops in town. Would definitely return if there again.

Brian R.

Yelp
As a cyclist I have been to more than one local bike shop - but none could be friendlier or easier to deal with than these guys. I had some trepidation about renting a "performance" carbon fiber bike for a long ride but these guys have quality bikes in their stable: mine was a Specialize with Ultegra. Bike was a recent model that was perfectly tuned. They even had Speedplay pedals. The wrenches there are super nice ...cannot say enough about their customer service.
google avatar

Trot N.

Yelp
Nice bike shop. Helpful staff. Pleasant experience. $25 daily rental was $5 cheaper than Acadia bike rentals. Also Bar Harbor was renting Specialized and Trek where Acadia was renting Raleigh. Would love to have given them 5 stars but 1 of the 2 bikes gears skipped.

Kristen L.

Yelp
We rented the ebikes for half a day. Great way to see the park .. great customer service, they sized the bikes for a comfortable fit & made sure that all was good before our ride. Would definitely recommend this shop!
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
We were advised to choose Bar Harbor Bikes because they do a great job maintaining their equipment. They did not disappoint. Al was very friendly and made sure we tested and were happy with our chosen bikes. Adam was very welcoming and gave us a great route recommendation for Acadia National Park. So glad we took his advice!

Keith M.

Yelp
My rear hub on my trek 520 failed. Free spinning. I got to shop @ 3 45. They replaced hub before 5 pm closing. I was very very happy. They exceeded my expectations. Very kind and courteous. I would highly recommend.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Friendly knowledgeable staff. Rental bikes in great shape - wheels true, gears and brakes adjusted. Reasonable rental rates. Also, good maps of carriage roads w mileage. Excellent experience!

Christian L.

Yelp
Absolutely the gold standard in service. Saved our trip! The owners were both friendly, and expert in their knowledge.
