On the Grid : Ritz P.D.B.

"Formerly Il Motore, this bar/performance venue has been renovated by it's new owners - the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The beer on tap is some of Quebec's finest, Ghost Farm and Trou du Diable. The concert calendar is incredible as well, featuring the likes of Health, Sinkane, Low, Jenny Hval and The Soft Moon to name a few." - Dynamo

Montreal’s Best Bars for Crying in Public | Eater Montreal

"The sheer variety of entertainment at this bar makes it a perfect place to cry for just about anyone—just make sure you’ve pre-planned. On any given night you’ll find metal bands, cult classic movie screenings, drag shows, or Britney Spears-themed DJ and dance nights. Pick a mood, show up, and break down! (Note that Le Ritz only opens on evenings where it has scheduled events.)" - Megan Jones

Montreal’s Best LGBTQ Bars and Hangouts | Eater Montreal

"Don’t be fooled by the bleak exterior which hints at this bar’s past life as a garage, Le Ritz (formerly Il Motore) is a veritable cultural hub. It’s not officially a gay bar by any stretch, but is the go-to venue for a number of queer dance parties, and neighbourhood queers show up en masse for other shows and movie screenings on site. There’ll be a cover charge if something is going on, but it operates as a regular (and cheap) bar on off nights." - Tim Forster

Cheap Cocktails in Montreal: Where to Drink Up | Eater Montreal

"Most cocktails, like the Sazerac, gimlet and Boulevardier go for $9 or $10 at this Jean-Talon music venue (formerly Il Motore), but the best deal belongs to daily drink specials, like $6 margaritas and Moscow Mules, between 5 and 9 p.m. Note that Le Ritz sometimes has ticketed shows, particularly later in the evenings." - Heather Vandenengel

Google
The music was fantastic but this place DESPERATELY needs to get either a taller stage/platform OR some kind of staggered seating for the audience. The floor is flat and the stage is low, so if you're not standing right in front of the stage you can't see anything at all. Not exaggerating, you really can't see anything unless you're absurdly tall. All you can see is the back of other people's heads!! Please find a solution to this because I would love to continue to events here but it's hard to justify spending the money to watch a band that I can't see :(

Google
Very small bar, but a perfect place to get away and fully be engulfed by the performance at hand. I went to see a jazz show, and you could feel every instrument

Google
i considered not leaving a review but its still bothering me a couple days later…… went to see kassie krut the other night here and the sound was dangerously badly mixed. not only did the band sound terrible (couldnt even hear the vocalist at all) the deepest lowest sounds were way too loud and we all felt it rattle our ear drums. this is how people fry their hearing….. something to take really seriously!! also the band just seemed bummed out like they knew the sound was so bad it ruined their set. and it was $30 to see them…. not cheap! so youd expect the sound to be at least decent

Good beer prices and great crowd, the staff are nice and the ambiance is cool and intimate

Google
Loved seeing Blockhead play here, it's so nice to have smaller venues to experience more intimate live shows! It really is tiny though, so I'd recommend arriving early if you'd like to be close to the front of your show.

Google
Cozzy, this place really have a soul, and sure to meet interesting people there. I went to a PaulBeaubrun concert there. The drinks are good, the sound is good, employees are great.

Google
Been here many times over the years. Its an intimate venue, the sound is always in point and the size is confusing. It has a decent capacity, but then it looks tiny and it still can hold 300ish people? Must be some kind of magic. I like going to shows here.

Google
Such a cool live music venue in Montreal..off the beaten path but not too far out. Perfect place for a punk or indie show and all sorts of things. Bar is nice as well.

Yelp
The place itself smelled like fish and rotten milk. This wasn't constant, and I'd forget about it pretty easily. The bartender was terrible. We went on June 20 2018, and she refused service because of exact change for a drink (while I was pulling out tip from my pocket)- I'm not going to break a 20 everytime when I have exact change + tip in toonies. She lied about having straws, refused to give one, and was extremely rude. She mixed up orders and was disrespectful to customers.

Yelp
There's some things I seriously love about the Ritz: it's one of Montréal's only wheelchair accessible venues, it caters to a lot of small artists, and it entertains a lot of our alt. community's affairs (events like no pants no problem and oodles of rock camp for girls fundraisers). There's also some serious downsides to this venue: a lot of their in-house events tend to be poorly planned (thinking to the sh*t show that half of their movie screenings are), popular shows are overpacked to a seriously dangerous level and the bar is consistently understaffed and overcrowded. Mostly, I'm really critical of the lack of this security this place has- I've had my glasses busted by other inebriated patrons, I've seen people walking out truly bloody and most importantly, in the fall, a locally well-known event planner was attacked in the middle of a show and had some guy try and rip off their finger with his teeth. (???) It can be debaucherous, let me tell ya. Enter at your own risk and likely have a blast.

Yelp
I went on a Saturday night when there was an event (Britney vs Xtina) so the cover charge was $10 to get in. The girl at the bar was really bad at her job. She couldn't figure out drink costs, she kept giving the wrong drink and the wrong change - it's one thing to be confused or flustered but the fact that she was being very rude to us AND kept getting everything wrong when the place was still relatively empty was bizarre. Will obviously give this place another shot considering it's also a concert venue.

Yelp
Last week I came back to the Ritz for a concert. Now this review is about the place not the show, but they are related. (So I must mention the RaRaRiot was amazing, including PWR BTTM & And the Kids). This is the best place to see an intimate indie concert. Inexpensive, small and great setup for your favorite band. I have and will go back for the next show because of the laid back vibe and simple setup. Enjoy!

Yelp
What a renovation! The last time I was at this place, I was in its previous incarnation Il Motore, for a music show produced by a friend. So, the changes: the bar has been moved to the side, and the stage is at the back; the stage has been minimized, and the design's been changed, for the better. The coat check area has been opened up, and aired out, to offer more space for incoming crowds. Well done, guys. It's a new space, for a new crowd, but with lots of potential. Hooray!

Yelp
This place was great, was warned about fish Smell, but it never came. Who loves music? I do. Go here for the vibes. Sounds great. Backstage lovely. Would play again def.

Yelp
If you're feel like having some drinks with friends on a snowy/warm/cool/hot night (depending on the season), then this is the place for you. If you're looking for a cute funky place to take your date for drinks, then you should definitely consider this bar. The atmosphere is cool and the drinks are strong enough. Oh and great service too! So, yes I've already included it on my list of cool bars.

Yelp
Really sweet venue. I like how the back of the room/bar is raised up, with a little ramp, so you can still see what's going on on the stage even if you're not right in front of it.

Yelp
Amazing bands play here all the time. Drinks are good, not expensive. And the atmosphere is pretty nice, especially when there's great bands that come here (like Seoul and Ghostly Kisses)!

Yelp
New to Montreal, I found a listing for a small Swedish indie pop band called "Little Dragon". I managed to convince my bf to venture there and we got of the De Castelnau metro in a quiet, snowy, deserted place (but this was a Tuesday night in January.) The show was $15 which I think it very reasonable. There was a coat check that unfortunately was FULL, so we had to hold our massive amounts of clothes the whole time. Il motore is a very small venue that would perhaps fit max 150 people (maybe less??). Anyway it seemed like the perfect intimate size for a indie band - and it was!. The crowd that night seemed to be in their 20 -30s and seemed pretty un-affected in general, more like a student crowd than a scene. Beers cost $5-6 and shots $4, although our first round was severely discounted for some reason yay :) We got there at 10pm, with the place already packed and the opening act playing, and it was still going when we left at 12:30. Definitely want to go back, although I might have to do some research of their future acts as I have never heard of them.

Yelp
Very weird vibe when we came in... Friday night, 10 PM, 5 people there and 3-4 staff just looking at us. No music. Big screen trying to maybe project some kind of thing on it but not sure... I went to the bathroom found myself in some kind of hostile environment where there was a good 3 cm of water of the floor and weird Halloween decorations on the sink so almost impossible to wash your hands (trust me you wanted to). When I walked back to the table we got ourselves, I saw a guy in a morphsuit hiding behind something that was all Halloween again and a staff member wearing a jumpsuit (kinda like ghost busters but in yellow) taking a photo..? They tried multiple times to put music on, without telling us and with the volume to the max so scaring us while we were casually talking and drinking. The drinks were awful. Mojitos were just water from the ocean, toooooo salty. Finally they put music and told us that we had to leave or pay cause there was an event starting at 11 PM which was okay cause tbh, didn't really want to stay in that Eva B kind of bar anymore. Would I recommend going there? No. Would I go back? To show them how to do it yeah.

Yelp
This place is awesome, simply because they consistently get the best live bands in Montreal year round. The Blue Skies Turn Black people do a great job putting on shows here. I sometimes come when I don't even know the bands, and it's usually really good.

Yelp
Nice local venue. They always have great bands playing there.
