The 38 Best Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand) | Eater

"Carlo Buenaventura is a well-known figure in Auckland’s hospitality scene, having worked all over the city’s kitchens, bars, and dining room floors before opening his own venue last year. Bar Magda is a bar and bistro where he cooks boundary-pushing food that references his Filipino heritage. Some of the offerings are raw, cold, and acerbic; some are comforting and cooked over charcoal. The through line is his use of local flavors and ingredients to create “seasonal dishes through a Filipino lens,” such as green-lipped mussel escabeche with green garlic and fennel. The cocktails here are given as much consideration as the food, and the subterranean location — down a long flight of stairs, with low red lighting and billowing curtains that divide the room — creates a romantic vibe that’s ideal for a date. — LJ" - Hillary Eaton

Great drinks menu - a lot of the cocktails look really interesting but we opted for wine in the end. Service was excellent. The food was ok - there were some nice dishes but the drinks and service were the highlights for us

Incredible service, very unique food and atmosphere was lovely. Service was amazing and the stand out of the experience. Carlos, who I believe is also one of the owners, was so lovely, warm and we really enjoyed the personal stories behind the dishes. The food was great. Very unique with different twists on nz and Filipino cuisine. Really enjoyed trying out this place!

One of the most unique and enjoyable dining experiences I have ever had in NZ, the Bar Magda feast was a wonderful array of Filipino inspired dishes from start to finish. Owner Carlo delivered each plate with justifiable pride and provided engaging and inspiring conversation throughout the whole evening. Standout for us was the Venison tartare but nothing left the table without being devoured 100%. Loved the Flinders Lane style vibe and décor, the latter with a wonderful back story, and can fully understand why Magda gets such great reviews from those in the know. Looking forward to a return visit.

celebrated my friend's birthday here. vibes are immaculate and it gives underground exclusive bar. we had the set menu and they were great to accommodate our dietary requirements. venison was star of the night, but my filipino friend loved all of the food (especially the bread with cheese spread). byo sunday which only makes it better. service was bit slow which made our dinner 4 hours long, tho i must add it was a 4-course meal. was quite busy the night we went and we waited a while for the menu would recommend for a nice date/special dinner kinda night

I went with my boyfriend and we ordered the 85 pp sharing menu, which was absolutely amazing, service was fast and service was outstanding. The dessert was beautiful, like piña colada made dessert.

2nd time dining at Bar Magda and another excellent meal. It’s an unassuming entrance in Cross St but just look for the little lit up Magda sign by a wooden doorway. Love the moody atmosphere. There are a few seating areas either end of the kitchen and bar but the kitchen counter seating is also a great experience to watch the chefs in action. The food is always excellent and unlike anything you can get in Auckland. Chef Carlo and team whips up modern takes on Filipino food especially highlighting flavours from Mindanao. Every dish we got was amazing in flavour and looked beautiful too. Highlights were the Magda salad which is one of the best we’ve ever had and the Lamb Ribs are always a classic. It’s great that they constantly have new menu items and cocktails which make repeat visits interesting. Love that Chef Carlo also takes his time to explain the story of each dish which makes the dining experience much more personal and interesting. Great work as always!

We had an absolutely incredible experience! The menu was fantastic and extremely well executed, delicious and well structured in terms of service timing. The service itself was outstanding, we felt so welcomed and looked after from as soon as we walked in the door until we left. Great atmosphere, would HIGHLY recommend.

What an experience. My wife and I had a great time. The ambiance was great, the staff looked after us, the drinks were unique and the food was delicious. The staff were great explaining the drink menu and we explained what we wanted to them and they were able to recommend some to us. The waiter explain every plate of food that was bought to us and the story behind them. We then found out later on that it was actually Chef Carlo who did this to every dish served to us! Thank you for the amazing night team. We will definitely be back for more.
