Bar Magda is a bar and bistro where he cooks boundary-pushing food that references his Filipino heritage. Some of the offerings are raw, cold, and acerbic; some are comforting and cooked over charcoal. The through line is his use of local flavors and ingredients to create “seasonal dishes through a Filipino lens,” such as green-lipped mussel escabeche with green garlic and fennel. One of the best food experiences in Auckland. We went for the $85 trust the chef menu which was the perfect way to sample the unique flavours Bar Magda has to offer. I was really impressed with all the dishes we had and it was awesome value. The steak was melt in your mouth with a tonne of spring onion in an addictive soy based sauce. Really enjoyed the slightly sweet venison tartare which had plum it it. The cheese spread reminded me of Obatzda from Germany, so yum. Value wise I think its very good for the quality you get. There is a $65 set menu option aswell.

See photos. We arrived early, don’t be put off by the downstairs night club vibe. Not my go to cuisine, but it could be now. Staff are great, discrete service, but always available. Thursday night was under half full, but on a busy night the place would humm. Worked for my hearing aids!

For my husband and I, as NZ Born South East Asians, it wasnt just a meal, it was like experiencing our heritage and identity thru food. My husband is a huge chatty foodie, plus he's only in recent years started to embrace his South East asian identity... He enjoyed speaking with Carlo about food, history and flavours. We could tell Carlo is extremely passionate about what he does and we found it very inspiring. My self too, I'm not much of a foodie, but I can attest every dish we had that night felt like familiarity... it was a really eye opening experience to 2 people who grew up in NZ without that connection to our parents' countries. I know for some it was just a restaurant, but for us, the ingredients, history and passion touched us personally. We will be sure to come back often and bring friends and family to experience Bar Magda and Carlo's wonderful food and hospitality again!

We had a sumptuous dinner at Bar Magda. The food and drinks were great. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Definitely a go to restaurant bar at Auckland.

Great drinks menu - a lot of the cocktails look really interesting but we opted for wine in the end. Service was excellent. The food was ok - there were some nice dishes but the drinks and service were the highlights for us

celebrated my friend's birthday here. vibes are immaculate and it gives underground exclusive bar. we had the set menu and they were great to accommodate our dietary requirements. venison was star of the night, but my filipino friend loved all of the food (especially the bread with cheese spread). byo sunday which only makes it better. service was bit slow which made our dinner 4 hours long, tho i must add it was a 4-course meal. was quite busy the night we went and we waited a while for the menu would recommend for a nice date/special dinner kinda night

Incredible service, very unique food and atmosphere was lovely. Service was amazing and the stand out of the experience. Carlos, who I believe is also one of the owners, was so lovely, warm and we really enjoyed the personal stories behind the dishes. The food was great. Very unique with different twists on nz and Filipino cuisine. Really enjoyed trying out this place!

 One of the most unique and enjoyable dining experiences I have ever had in NZ, the Bar Magda feast was a wonderful array of Filipino inspired dishes from start to finish. Owner Carlo delivered each plate with justifiable pride and provided engaging and inspiring conversation throughout the whole evening. Standout for us was the Venison tartare but nothing left the table without being devoured 100%. Loved the Flinders Lane style vibe and décor, the latter with a wonderful back story, and can fully understand why Magda gets such great reviews from those in the know. Looking forward to a return visit.
