The Best Cocktail Bars in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"This Alamo Heights hideaway is a bottle collector’s fantasy, and the staff is eager to chat about their latest discovery and incorporate the spirits into quietly innovative drinks. The current menu pays homage to eighties hair metal, using charcoal syrup to give Back in Black its raven color and Turkish tobacco bitters to dose Bad Medicine. The atmosphere is almost an afterthought, though the cozy lighting and low music offer one of San Antonio’s few places to enjoy a stiff drink in peace." - Brandon Watson

Bar Mon Ami offers an excellent atmosphere with top-notch customer service. The bartenders were exceptionally friendly, and the drinks were both well-crafted and reasonably priced. I’ll definitely be returning!

Google
Ambience is the main reason for my wife and I trying this place and it did not let down. Very clean, very quaint, and quietly tucked away off Broadway. Drinks were strong but good, prices were a bit elevated but the entirety of the establishment makes up for it. Overall not a bad place to grab a drink with some friends.

Google
Cozy, relaxing vibe where you can also get work done if you need to. Multiple seating options from booths, couches, bar top and outdoor seating. To die for in the Spring! Close enough to downtown but with very reasonable prices. Best of both worlds! Lots of parking, water available for self service, gorgeous cocktails and experienced mixologists. Always an opportunity to try something new. Loved the Cinco de Mayo special addition to the menu!!! This is my #1 spot!

Google
Was dog hopping and google dog friendly spaces and this place popped up, so we stopped by, before we even got out drink orders in, dog treat was already given. Cool staff and the locals made it a plus, very immersive experience

Me and my wife absolutely love this bar! Very friendly bartenders and people. It's a great local bar if you live in the Alamo heights area. This has become our new hang out spot thanks to the good vibes and awesome people that work/come to this bar.

Google
Truly one of San Antonio's hidden Gems. Here's why: Freaking place still makes some of fhe best drinks. Vibes hasn't changed in 10 years and neither has the mood lighting which I love. Even the staff, while not the same, has maintained that same level of quality service which also kept me coming back when i lived in San Antonio. We had the You Got another Thing Comin, Nothin But A Good Time, and 2 Killed by Death. All were super Kudos to the owners and bar manager for keeping this spot as cool as ever through the years

Google
Super friendly bartenders and delicious cocktails - what else could you ask for? This place has a relaxed vibe, and feels cozy and inviting. Come casual or come dressed up for pre or after dinner drinks on a date night. Loved the Old Fashioned I had. Also, loved the alien themed drinks. We eat across the street at Cappy's regularly and this will be our new spot for an after dinner nightcap.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Bar du Mon Ami, and it was an absolutely delightful experience. The cozy, dimly lit ambiance exudes charm, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing evening out. My boyfriend and I decided to stop by for drinks, and we were not disappointed. I ordered one of their craft cocktails from the menu, and it was a true work of art. The bartenders here are top-notch mixologists, and my cocktail was expertly crafted, perfectly balanced, and bursting with flavor. The staff at Bar du Mon Ami are a true highlight. Joel, Rachel, and Carlos, the bartenders on duty during our visit, were not only skilled at their craft but also incredibly welcoming. Joel, in particular, added a touch of humor and jest to our evening, making our time at the bar even more enjoyable. What I appreciate most about Bar du Mon Ami is its authenticity. It's a local gem that prioritizes creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere for its patrons. Whether you're looking for a casual night out with friends or a romantic date spot, this bar has you covered. I can't recommend Bar du Mon Ami enough. The combination of great drinks, a charming ambiance, and a friendly staff make it a must-visit in the area. I'll certainly be returning for more memorable evenings in the future. Cheers! 🍻🍹

Yelp
This is a nice bar tucked into a quiet area. There were times where a lot of people came in, but the bartenders were excellent. We sat at the bar and customer service was great. Nice and clean and well taken care of. The drinks were great, and I would recommend trying Bar Mon Ami.

Yelp
Very chill vibes. Ordered a cute cocktail and then went to sit on their cozy couch. It seems like they have a lot of regulars every one seemed to know each other. They have a good mix of the classics and some special made drinks too.

Yelp
We've been going to Bar Mon Ami for years due to the excellent cocktails and service. This classy neighborhood bar has a quieter ambiance compared to other bars. You order at the bar as there is no table service. Carlos did a wonderful job with the Bohemian Rhapsody and Charity cocktail (part of proceeds donated to a local charity) we ordered. All of the ingredients are fresh and the flavor combinations in the drinks complemented each other. There are few bartenders (shout out to Joel) that I trust to make me any cocktail of their choice, but I have never been disappointed at Bar Mon Ami.

Yelp
This is an easy going neighborhood bar. Stopped by after dinner nearby for some drinks and conversation. We sat at the bar and enjoyed conversation with the bar tender and fellow patron. Was a nice time talking with new people and having laughs. Bar was kept clean all throughout! This bar has a charity drink. They pick a local charity and craft a drink around it. It was nice to be charitable while drinking. Good things can happen at a bar!

Yelp
I had a great time at this chill, hidden neighborhood spot. There's plenty of parking, which is always a plus. Restrooms were clean and gender neutral. The bartender was friendly, took the time to chat with everyone, and clearly knew the locals. The evening my party visited, our bartender in particular was extremely knowledgeable about a wide variety of spirits and even crafted an excellent off-menu drink for me. While table service isn't available, it's easy enough to go to the bar to place your order. Each drink was well crafted with fresh ingredients, and tasted great. Selections were Killed By Death, a simple old fashion, followed by a paper plane and Smokin In The Boys Room. This was my first visit, and I look forward to coming back. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that many of the drinks had a bit too much lemon for my taste. Still, it was a solid experience overall!

Yelp
Cute bar off Broadway with plenty of parking. It's a bit hidden in the plaza and you could easily miss it. My friend recommended this place and I really enjoyed it! Sometimes there's a lively crowd and other times it's more laid back. It just seems to depend on the day. Really nice drink menu and the bartenders are super accommodating and helpful to recommend drinks you may enjoy.

Jacob R.

Yelp
Calm atmosphere never too loud, smaller space but with seating if you want to catch up with your friends. can occasionally get busy but the bartenders know how to handle themselves in a rush. Carlos is my favorite. He makes a great drink no matter how busy it may be.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. My buddy Drew took me to his favorite bar in San Antonio and it was Bar Mon Ami. After my first visit I completely understand why it's his favorite bar. The place is just cool and very welcoming. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly. Carlos and Rachel were there that night. Carlos made great drinks for us and he even remembered my name from the week before. This place is a hidden gem in the truest sense. It's hidden away on Broadway street and you will miss it if you don't know what to look for. The people that go there are cool and are willing to engage in good conversation with you. They have plenty of parking available as well. This is my favorite bar now. You definitely need to check it out if you want a fantastic experience with excellent customer service.

Erika L.

Yelp
Very chill and tucked away on Broadway. Definitely deserves a stop over for drinks. Very professional. DOGs allowed inside (air conditioned). Done! This place is a repeat.

Yelp
It's sad to see what Bar MA has become, as it started as a rather refined, quiet and well-bartended experience. Now, the drinks are off, the music is loud and the crowd are embarrassing drunks who are better off yelling at an icehouse in Southtown. Last visit saw a bartender who couldn't make a good martini to save his life. Switched to what was once a tried-and-true there (an aviation) and it tasted off as well. Bartender said he was missing an ingredient, but made it anyway. No bueno. Shoulda said something before you (incorrectly) made the drink.
google avatar

Marcos D.

Yelp
The decor is cozy but not as fancy as other speakeasy bars and the bartender doesn't wear a uniform but the drinks are creative and excellently crafted. I had a concoction that had multiple liquors and an absinthe rinse. The bartender cautioned me the she only would make one an hour for the customer. She was absolutely right! Very strong, very delicious, so strong I forgot to take a picture or write down it's name. She made another creation she wanted feedback on and I absolutely enjoyed it was made with chocolate bitters-excellent! I will be back and see if I can actually remember what I ordered!
google avatar

Doretta W.

Yelp
Almost hidden behind the trees and patio is a cool, old-time bar with a few unique liquor choices. It was a quiet place to have a drink after work ... then after about 6PM it starts to be hopping with the locals. If it's a nice day they have a patio with tables. The bartenders were nice, and the drinks were made well.
google avatar

Olga B.

Yelp
Stopped here after dinner down the street. The drinks were good. But there is no menu, you just have to ask for something off top of your head. There is nothing special about it...no live music, no special decor or theme. So just like drinking at home, but more expensive.

Yelp
Awesome! Fun times.. you never know what to expect! Great friends and drinks!!!! Alex and Rachelle are always great!!

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Totally liked the vibe. My drink was fabulous! Great date night spot. I love a place that is dim and dark!
google avatar

Brooke R.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice with the bar being tucked away, the dimmer lighting, and the wall long bar stocked with alcohol. They had a lot of different and unique drinks. I did feel like their seating and decor lacked some cohesiveness. But the drinks we had were great! I'd go back to try some of their funky specials.

Kelly F.

Yelp
The staff is amazing. Mixologist's experts for sure. My favorite place to join friends out on the patio after work :)
google avatar

Gabriel M.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood and needed to stop by and work for a little on my computer. Sat down and ordered a gin martini. The place was empty, not sure if it's to early 7:30pm, or if it's not as popular. But the service was great, the drink was well prepared and the bar tender was very knowledgeable. It isn't only a cocktail bar since they serve beer and wine too. Definitely stop by if you're in the area. Good hangout spot.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this bar as a result of Yelp searches and my boyfriend and I were not disappointed! Bar du Mon Ami is located in an unassuming shopping plaza and to be honest, at first we thought we had already passed it. It is quaint with a solid cocktail bar vibe. Given that we were there around 5pm on a Saturday, it wasn't too crowded; however, the bar staff and the drinks were phenomenal! I ordered a "Try Me" which is a tequila-based drink that is essentially their spin on a margarita, but with homemade Earl Grey (yes, Earl Grey!) syrup. They make all of their syrups in-house an the prices are fair for what you receive. The only thing that might have made me enjoy my experience more would have been some grade A bar popcorn, but hey we can't win em' all can we? Parking - Free parking; Ample-sized lot out front. Specials - We came on a weekend so there weren't any, but I'd be curious as to if they have any weekday specials
google avatar

Jessie A.

Yelp
I thought this would be a great place, but the first time I entered the bartender was terrible. I asked for a menu and he said abruptly, "no menu, I can make anything." I can't say I'm much of a creative drinker, and had no clue what to order. My boyfriend asked him what was his favorite to make and the guy (again abruptly) said Beers. Really? At a cocktail bar you can't come up with some fan favorites for new customers? Truely have never had such a bad experience but so many reviews were great. It just may be the bartender, John or Shawn. When we asked his name he walked away and told us with his back toward us. So it's really up in the air.
google avatar

Maitina M.

Yelp
I'll keep this short. Cool neighborhood bar that's clearly patronized by frequent locals. We came in around 10 PM. The place was not crowded at all. Highlight of my night was seeing two four legged fur babies lounging on the path towards the restrooms. I'm a MAJOR dog lover so I totally got a kick out of this. Bartenders were pretty chill. They vaped a few times (not my thing) and drank once (what I actually witnessed). The hubs had his Manhattan which he enjoyed while I had my dirty martini AND a delicious vodka based bartenders surprise. We asked for the ingredients of my drink which the bartender willingly shared. We left the bar about an hour and a half later, both totally content. No frills and totally laid back is how I can best describe this place. One more thing, there's an option to sit outside. Something we would have done had there been tables available.
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
I met with some friends here and as soon as I walked in I was greeted by the bartender and an incredibly sweet dog. I ordered an old fashioned and was asked if I wanted Rye or Bourbon. I knew then this was a good choice. The service was great and I really enjoyed the ambiance. I will definitely return.

Victoria R.

Yelp
I like the vibe at this place but I'm suspicious of their price transparency and honesty. Web site and table menu state $8 for my wine. I walked up to the bar (before looking at these price statements) and paid cash, not questioning the $9 quoted. I tipped.

Yelp
Had a blast, drinks we're great, and got to meet some fellow wisconsinites who got jonny to take his shirt off

Yelp
This casual, laid-back neighborhood bar is perfect for a cozy evening of drinks and conversation with friends. The dimly lit space is inviting, intimate, and the low hum of electronica in the background relaxes you while the perfectly crafted cocktails ease you out of the hustle of the day. Cheers!

Yelp
this place sucks. i've been here 3 times and they're always closed. their hours say until 2am???? If you're not open until 2am then why are you closing on 12?? Done with this bar. Next.

Miranda R.

Yelp
The staff was not friendly (as a fellow girl) they were only nice to the men. The atmosphere was nice and secluded though, I enjoyed the lighting and cocktails.
google avatar

Donald D.

Yelp
Dom and Johnny made our Saturday night worth it going out for the first time in a long time. Missed quality bartendenders and quality bars and they were both.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably my favorite bar in SA for quite ambiance and chill atmosphere. Cocktails here are top-of-class and it's a GREAT place for a business meeting. I am ssssoooo glad they are back up and running now that we have seemed to have largely cleared the Covid pandemic. Patronize this place; you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Another great place to catch drinks with friends at night! My roommate and I really enjoyed all the drinks here as well as the service. The light wasn't too dim so that we had to shine a flashlight over the menu and the music wasn't too loud so we weren't shouting at each other. Honestly the place had a nice cozy, but fancy feel to it. DRINKS: I don't know how often the menu changed but I'm reviewing the drinks on the menu that night. Seems like the cocktail menu had most type of liqueurs to satisfy anyone Ordered the JASMINE JEWEL ($): Gin, jasmine liqueur, lemon, and tonic - really perfect for another who enjoys the taste of jasmine and gin. I'm not even a huge fan of gin and I really loved this drink. Then I got the FRENCH 75 since you get a discount off CHAMPAGNE COCKTAILS if you check in and it was also good. All in all really solid bar and we will be visiting again!
google avatar

Yelp
I just love how cute and quaint this little tucked away in plain sight neighborhood bar is so inviting and chill! The hemmingway daiquiri is a classic gem from here! Like many of the spots I find, this speak easy vibe located on Broadway is

Yelp
Let's be real: I gave a 20% tip, and a local regular gave me shit saying I undertipped. I admit that i stooped to her level and with much pettiness, told her to fuck off. Aparently they were friends of the bartender. If you ever tip 15% or more in a place where your drinks aren't delivered, and you have to go back to the bar to get your drink, no one can tell you that you undertipped. In this bar, not the case. THEY DONT MAKE YOU FEEL AT HOME. They obviously have their regular customers push you to tip more and feel bad if you tip anything less than 21%. There are no good bars around, so that behavior is clearly pavloviab, where if you don't do what the besties of the bartenders say, you are the outlier.
google avatar

Joe A.

Yelp
Recent favorites: Vieux Carre (spicy and sweet) ; rye Manhattan (modified classic) ; penicillin (Scotch, ginger spice, and more Scotch). Winter time brings Chris's cinnamon infused bourbon and Hot Toddy's (cinnamon bourbon, lemon, honey, tiny bit of ginger). If you're not sure what you want, let Alejandro know what you like and dislike and he'll help you find your new favorite cocktail.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
I am thoroughly surprised at the lack of reviews for this place; HOWEVER, referring to a study on the psychology of Americans vs the rest of the world, Americans are more likely to take action when they feel they've been negatively or unfairly treated. So perhaps this is not such a bad thing, reflective of more overall positive experiences lost in the subsequent alcoholic stupor from a Moscow Mule. I've always treated this place as a "come for the drinks, stay for the company" type place. It feels like a neighborhood coffee shop. I appreciate that the noise level is such that you can carry on a conversation with someone without yelling and losing your voice. The atmosphere is cozy, and to take some labor off the mind, I can go up to the bartenders and just give some parameters like: "something with gin and not too sweet, no bitters" and I can trust it will usually be something I like. This is my default San Antonio bar. Default meeting spot for friends. Default "let's have a random celebration in San Antonio" spot.
google avatar

Miriam B.

Yelp
Classy dive? Simple. Whiskey gin tequila rum. Perfection. Two drinks max. Dimly lit. Amy Winehouse. Blood orange old fashioned. Terribly written review.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Bar du Mon Ami is where you go when you want to relax under the tutelage of a knowledgeable barkeep. These guys run a friendly, convivial, cozy establishment. The new location across the hall from Mon Thai is divine!
google avatar

Sonja J.

Yelp
Met with friends here several times when visiting in town. The Manhattan is fantastic; on the rocks with a cherry, neat without. Either way, delicious! I will miss hanging out here since it is a small friendly place where you can enjoy conversation with friends.
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
Casual sophistication at its best. My friends and I love this spot on Broadway in Alamo Heights for a nice drink that won't break the bank. Lovely atmosphere that is not too loud and not too dark. Where I want to go for a chill drink or two any night of the week. Great and friendly service too. Bartenders who know what they're doing but aren't stuck up about it...they will mix things up for you to taste and guide you to a cocktail you'll love. Last night, they were serving $6 hot toddies that were a particular treat.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
Tucked away in a small shopping center, Bar du Mon Ami is the perfect combination of classy and casual. In other words, the decor and drinks are well-curated, but you can still wear jeans. The bartenders are friendly but not intrusive, and there is plenty of seating and parking. Definitely a cool spot to check out and relax if you're in the area!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
I took my friend her for her b-day pre-celebration, it is a great place, very clean and great mix drinks. I'm a whiskey sipper, that mean I turn my nose up at blend drinks. However, I liked their mix drinks. The Basil Collins is a great summer drink IMO The Monk's Revenge, isn't my favorite, it tastes like cough drop. The Rum Diary is a great drink, I really enjoyed it. To be honest, I'm still look down at blend drinks, but I like the idea of mixing them up once a while. I'm up to try few other drinks next time. My only suggestion is I wish there were more spare chairs, since most table only hold 4 people, group of 5s often takes the stools from the bar, we had to stand for 15 mins before we got the chair back. Not a deal breaker though.
google avatar

AErik W.

Yelp
So this used to be one of my favorite bars outside downtown. The selection used to be great and the menu was extensive. I was excited to get a drink there and the blood orange Manhattan's were one of my favorite drinks. I drove out of my way today to stop for a visit today and was crushed.... The selection is maybe half what it was. The menu is ok but not close to the complexity it used to have. In fact they are very clise to classic cocktails with just minor changes. The bar has a lot more wine and the pop music and smell of pine sol have replaced a comfortable and cozy establishment. Wow..what happened? I am disappointed enough to just drive into downtown and drink a farewell toast to Bar Du Mon Ami...I will try and remember the bar that was ...but this isn't it. Sad and disappointed to lose a creative and well stocked watering hole.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
First of all, I used to love this bar (5 years ago) I had not been since 2014, so I was really exited to come back. I asked the bartender what he suggested/ his favorite drink. But the bartender was a complete jerk. He said he had been "bartending so long he didn't care to give his opinion and would rather just make what we want". SO RUDE. The bar was empty and I always appreciate when a bartender can just whip up something unique.. not to mention when we got there he was outside smoking and didn't bother to wash his hands when he came back in. The place is lovely, but the bartender ruined the vibe for me.
google avatar

Vincent V.

Yelp
Well this place is garbage. The bartender manager whose losing his hair is trash. Jeez it's 2019 own up to customer service. Do your job as Bill Belichick says. Not difficult to make a cocktail. Totally uncool and killed the vibe. If I wanted to hear complaints I would listen to my 10 year old nephew. Attitude is everything and he needs to go look at a rainbow or just appreciate the patrons who drop $ and can go to any bar spot they deem worthy! #Nextquestion

Yelp
Full disclosure. This is my neighborhood bar. I like it. like you should like your neighborhood bar. It's cozy. We bring our dog. Well stocked bar. House cocktails are unique, reasonably priced and delicious. Bartenders are friendly and that's very, very important in a neighborhood bar. You should check it out!
google avatar

Crystal G.

Yelp
Thank you Yelp, for helping me find this gem on Broadway! When I first walked in I felt like I was in a movie, such a different vibe going on here! So classy.. oh la la! Was a little disappointed at the small cocktail menu, but was very pleased with the service and professionalism of the bartender. Cute little place to catch up with a friend and share some intimacy as well!

Yelp
Great place to have a drink with friends, Johnny and Rachel do a fantastic job of making all patrons feel welcome!

Yelp
This place is fantastic. The owner is incredibly nice, and the drinks are spectacular. If you're looking for a good atmosphere, and unique drink options, I can't recommend this place enough. Stop here for a cocktail or two, and you won't regret it.

Yelp
This is a nice little neighborhood bar. It's pretty laid back and not too loud for conversation. The crowd is fairly mixed although it does lean a little older (40+), which makes sense given the locale. Overall, solid.
