Downtown’s Got a Groovy New Hotel Bar | Eater San Diego

"Inside the hotel, Bar Moxy is programmed to be more than a hotel amenity: open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., it offers grab-and-go food and coffee in the mornings and a full kitchen that serves an all-day menu of snacks, burgers, sandwiches, and signature naan breads topped with everything from pulled pork to marshmallow and Nutella. Drinks are a draw too, with cocktails like the tiki-inspired Luau Life (Malahat Spirits spiced rum) and the Slick Rickey (Old Harbor gin, St-Germain, lime, cucumber, soda, and black pepper), and DJs who start in the mid-afternoon to provide a soundtrack for sipping." - Candice Woo

I hosted my nonprofit fundraiser and birthday party here and it was an incredible venue. The views are amazing. Everyone was so gracious. Veronica and Peggy were super helpful. They worked flawlessly with my even curator, Nicole of A Diamond Occasion to transform the rooftop. The rooftop was the perfect choice! Can't wait to throw another party there. Super satisfied with the service!

This one is hard for me. I was in for work with a co-worker and I specifically came to a Moxy because I enjoy the vibe and kindness I am shown. At the front Desk, perfection. We were treated like royalty and with kindness. The bar was an amazing atmosphere and the live jazz band really tied the mood in. We ordered drinks and the staff (at least one of the girls) was very off putting. I got the sinking feeling that we made a mistake to come to the bar... We grab our drinks and when it was 10:45 or so we had the same bar tender walk over our legs and turn off the TV we were watching without saying anything. At 11:02, we were with several groups of people and having an in-depth conversation and, yet again, the same girl is now spraying our table with my phone and drink on it and I asked, "Oh, are you closing?" She said, "Yes we are." I had to clean my phone off and give up my drink because it had cleaner in it. I am not a hard person to please but it ruined the experience. Very sad. I hope you go and have a different experience!

When you book at the Moxy, at least when I did last weekend, you are paying for a $35 F&B fee. Basically, it's a credit that can be used at their bar. I had a few whiskey's, and ordered the pepperoni half pizza. Here's the issue, and I can't say this is always the case, but when you order food it comes from some secret kitchen and gets placed on a ledge near the entrance. Was my name called? Perhaps, but I had headphones in while I was working on my laptop. I wasn't told about this, and the pizza was cold. So, I think at best the pizza would have been 4 stars, but giving that alone a 3 rating. There was a shift change so it's very possible that caused the issue vs them being bad at their jobs. For the hotel/bar, pro tip would be to let people know ahead of time your little system of getting customers their food, at least more consistently. Peeps who may read this, now you know.

Google
I had my 50th Birthday celebration on the Rooftop of the Moxy and it was 100% AMAZING! The staff was professional, accommodating and very supportive. I want to give especially a shout to Veronica Bulger, from day one in the planning and to the very end I cannot say enough of how appreciative I am of her. She answered every question I asked and made sure everything went smooth. I have never been to an event where any guests were raving about how nice the staff were and the Moxy was it.

Google
We recently hosted our wedding reception on 8/17/24 on the rooftop terrace at The Moxy Boston. The rooftop terrace is on the 24th floor and has amazing views of the city. The venue was perfect and transformed into a gorgeous party venue for our night. We had about 82 people attend and with the balcony open it allowed our guests to be inside or outside. Peggy, Veronica, and Vinny. I cannot say enough about your hospitality. They were very responsive and answered all of our questions throughout the planning process. They made setting up the day, coordinating with our other vendors and packing up super smooth. During our event food came out at the right time, I didn’t hear any complaints about food and for what I did eat it was good. Also get the donut wall, it’s a hit! When our event time was coming to an end it was not difficult to extend our party an extra hour. I appreciate how flexible they were. That is how much of a good time we were having we couldn’t leave! When our event eventually ended we filed down to the 2nd floor bar to continue dancing. We left all of our decor and items upstairs and the coordinators very neatly put everything back into boxes and packed it away for us to pick up the next day. Everything was amazing on our day and I would recommend anyone looking to host an event to choose The Moxy!

Google
Stopped here for a beer and snack before our comedy show. Such a great atmosphere, the bartenders were welcoming, the design of the first and second floor was amazing. I'm taking note to stay at their hotel if I see any good deals come up the next time I visit Boston.

Kelly C.

Google
The review is specifically for Moxy Hotel's rooftop Bar Moxy that is available during special events like receptions. You probably can rent out the rooftop. When the weather is warm, you can go outside and sit at a table on the terrace. The catered food, rooftop views, and the beverage options are outstanding. I've been here four times and each time was memorable.

Google
Only went here because Moxy hotel gives you vouchers (they first charge you the service fee, then encourage to visit their bar). Food was mediocre at best. The croissant looked like bread....
google avatar

Yelp
Laid back atmosphere to grab a drink. Great location near downtown theaters and sights.

Yelp
Bartender was on his phone the entire time; Didn't tell us we had to get our food from a "Panera style" pick up until we asked where the food was. The burger was yummy; the pretzel bites were tasteless and dry.

Yelp
Back in Boston, back at Bar Moxy!! The food is great, energy is high and electric atmosphere! If you're staying at the Moxy hotel, you're in luck because you get a food/drink voucher so be sure to take advantage during your stay. This time I ordered the Half Buffalo pizza and soft pretzels. Amilia was my server and she was both helpful and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
If it weren't for our food vouchers, we would've gone elsewhere. We stopped by for a drink in the evening. And in the morning for breakfast. Ordered two avocado toasts (they offer gluten free bread!). And they had free coffees! Avocado toasts were bland. It had pico de gallo and a hard boiled eggs. Mind you there is no kitchen here! They have oven toasters and microwaves that heat/cook the food. So already that should've been my hint. Like I mentioned would likely not eat here if it weren't for the food vouchers.

Bob U.

Yelp
Not really a bar. It's like the hotel is required to have a bar to be in the Marriott family, but it's pretty lame. Service is hit and miss.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
My boyfriend was not super impressed with his cheesesteak. I liked my club sandwich. I didn't love that the only option was chips. I'm a fry girl so that was disappointing BUT I'd say deeecent food for a quick grab to eat for a hotel stay.

Yelp
Bar Moxy is the in-house bar and restaurant for the Moxy Hotel. Since I was a guest of the hotel and was given food and drink vouchers to use here, I visited here a few times during my stay. Bar Moxy is located on the second floor of the Moxy Hotel; the area is kind of an open, mixed-use space with the bar, common seating, and the lobby all contiguous with each other. Theming and aesthetics are the same as the hotel itself: contemporary/industrial with splashes of pinks, purples, and blacks. In addition to drinks, the bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner - with tables scattered where they will serve you after placing your order (you can also get it to go). Additionally, have games on some of the tables to play - I noticed a huge Connect 4 on one of the communal tables by the bar. They're a full bar, so they offer what one would expect plus signature cocktails. I used my free drink vouchers which gave me the choice of a beer, wine, or their signature cocktail. I went with the cocktail - I honestly forgot the liquor in it but it had berry and lime flavors. It was fine, not strong but hey you get what you pay for. I did get some of their food throughout my stay - I had a grilled chicken sandwich, buffalo chicken naan, and a breakfast naan. The food was good - tasty but nothing too noteworthy. Service was fine, food and drinks were served fast and everyone was friendly. Overall, I wouldn't call Bar Moxy destination spot, but it definitely serves its purpose if you're staying at the hotel.

Yelp
If you are going to charge $17 for a mediocre old fashioned at least have a whisky ice much like the rest of this hotel it tries so hard to be trendy it misses the make in the very way to be a good hotel
google avatar

Yelp
I went to the roof part of bar moxy on a Friday night when it was open to the public. It's one of the highest rooftop views in Boston and the space has so much potential, but it was really dead for a Friday night. There were a few specialty fall cocktails but they weren't really amazing. I think if you can catch a rooftop night with a bigger crowd then it could be really fun.

Andrew B

Yelp
Giving 5 stars specifically for Alexa! She is a very knowledgeable bartender and very vibrant! We are on day 3/6 in Boston and we love coming to see her before we go back to our room!

Yelp
I ate at Bar Moxy 4 times for breakfast, once for dinner, and stopped by 2 times for a drink. The hotel gives you $25 to spend at the bar for each night of your stay so I made sure to use it all. Each time I ate here I either felt sick as I ate or sick shortly after. Not sure if something is up with some of the ingredients. The staff was always pleasant and friendly. Do remember to tip even as you're receiving "comped" food. The bar is cute with a variety of seating arrangements and games. There's a microwave and plugs if you need to charger a phone or laptop. The bar did get slightly crowded each night but I didn't spot any sugar daddies so it may as well have been empty lol A cool place to chill.

Scott S.

Yelp
A solid bar with a really cool atmosphere and great view from the upper levels. Had a really good time here during the night out with some friends.(B)

Yelp
There's a lot of gnats flying around the bar. It's also not good, when you sit down and the bartender says, we don't have this drink, this drink and this drink. Why are you even open? The other bartender, touched the trash can, floor and then made drinks

Yelp
Located on the 2nd floor of Moxy hotel, here you can unwind after a long sightseeing day with drinks and snacks. We stayed at the Moxy for 5 nights over Labor day weekend, and between the 4 of us, we had enough Marriott credits to try almost everything on the menu. The drinks are great, they had a unicorn signature drink that was pretty light. Our group agreed that the fajitas and flatbread were delicious. Our favorite is the dessert smores flatbread. Definitely order it!
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't want to like this place as the Moxy hotel is quite contemporary and not my style but my breakfast here was delicious. I had the Moxy sampler which was made up of a tasty frittata, delicious sausage links , crispy bacon, hotel style home fries and a crust bread toast. I wanted to order another it was so good,

Yelp
What a super cool place this is. Normally when you visit a bar at a hotel it always feel so blah but this place was very live. What a concept for a hotel bar. The hotel bar has various sitting areas with a cooler where you can actually go and pick up your own can of beer, juice, water or any type of refreshment you may want. They also have a bar menu as well, although we did not get anything from it. The bar has various games to play while there, they had jenga, connect four and other games. It was a very cool environment.

Yelp
We decided to check out this bar since we received a voucher from the Moxy hotel we were staying at. This bar is on the second floor of the hotel across from the check in counter. The cashier could not complete our transaction at the register since she was new and was unable to apply our voucher without a supervisor override and the supervisor (bartender) was busy at the time. She reassured that our drinks will be made and brought to us. However, we waited over 20 minutes for our drinks and witnessed the parties behind us receive their drinks immediately. When we approached the cashier, she said our drinks has been ready but she did not know where we went and thought we had left. We were seated near the bar and the place was pretty empty so I am not sure how she missed us. The bartender did apologize for the confusion at the end when we were paying and I understand that the cashier was new but there should be a better system to serve food and drinks to the right party in a timely manner. We ordered the got moxy and chocolate espresso martini. The drinks were aesthetically nice and the drinks tasted good but they tasted like juice and did not taste alcoholic at all. I'm not sure if they were worth over $15-20 per drink.
google avatar

Yelp
Ate and drank here 5 days in a row recently. Gotta use those $25 credit vouchers given by the hotel! Food was fair for what it was. We got nachos and hummus plate, so simple stuff. The nachos had fake white cheese sauce, that tasted weird. The hummus plate was ok. The cocktails tasted good, but watered down. I never tasted any alcohol, so I'd assume they do a very short pour of alcohol in their cocktails. The music and ambiance is very cool, eclectic, hip. Fun place to go!
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the ambiance here. Giant jenga, board games, foosball, and giant connect 4 while being bar side! Nice workers and a small selection of drinks to choose from. Slightly over priced but can't complain for the area. We tried some breakfast and lunch items which were simple but yummy.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
A very cool bar with many different sitting areas. We ordered a bud light ($7) and a glass of Prosecco ($12). The bartenders are fast and easily told us about the different local beers on tap---all of them were IPAs. We also ordered a chicken BLT wrap which was bland and never we saw one piece of bacon. There's lots of cool games, like Jenga at the tables to play with your friends.

Nicholas D.

Yelp
there new crappy bar tender bobby gave me the worst whiskey in the world, worst than bar whiskey. Even though it was terrible "old elk" he charged me for two high quality "Bully boy's" whiskey. a bum move if you ask me. don't trust bobby. the crappy financial rep.

Yelp
I visited here several times while staying at Hotel Moxy. They serve coffee and breakfast early am until 1pm, then bar drinks + a few food options. I'd only come back here out of convenience. They use a nespreso macchine for lattes - the one i had was not that good. Their milk alternative is almond. Luckily mine was free because of a hotel coupon so I had no problem walking away from it. That is when I finally got it. They kept forgetting about my latte. I reminded them twice. The second time they pushed the nespreso button, walked away, and finally remembered it 15 min later. I came for lunch but found they didn't serve lunch. I got the breakfast tots which were decent and the saving grace of this review alongside the stylish decor and casual seating areas with a large tv and plenty of games. The cocktails i tried were basic. Way overpriced. And they leave off ingredients from the drink menu all the time out of convenience of making them (one gal told me this and i could hear them talking about this). Beer is served in less than a pint size for the same price. Though the orange beer they had was good. Service was slow and not friendly.

Yelp
We stayed at the Moxy last week and got a chance to check out Bar Moxy a few days out of the week. The drinks are always good . I was a little disappointed with the hours of the bar , it could be cause of COVID but I would've preferred to have been able to get a drink after 10. They have table games and plenty of room for hotel guests and Boston locals. The service is great as well, even when they got busy they made sure to stay on top I'd everything. If you go try a few of their cocktails they are so yummy.
google avatar

Huie N.

Yelp
Really cool themed bar, very hip, and chic. Plentiful seating so you can be spaced out and enjoy your drinks. The drinks are pretty good. There's also small bites, which includes sliders and chicken wings. I didn't try those during my visit so can't really review it but the bar moxy is a chill place.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't even know where to start. Currently laughing with how much of a joke this place is! First off.. on a Saturday night where all restaurants were booked out, there was only about 4-5 ppl here. And it was almost pitch silent. Straight awkward. My husband ordered The Moxy cocktail ($13)... he said it was 2/5... yet it's the most advertised and loved on the menu. The we ordered the wings. Oh. My. Goodness. The wings. They were $14. And they were NOT good. You know when you're running late and have no time to cook, so you grab some freezer wings and microwave them... then toss them in Buffalo.. yea.. I paid $14 for that. When the wings came out, I told my husband "$14 for 4 wings!?". (He was equally shocked by the amount of wings we were served) The waitress turned around and barked "actually SEVEN wings". LOL. So much for service!‍ Anywho; do yourself a favor and walk across the street to 7-eleven. You can get SO MUCH yummminess for $29.
google avatar

Monique J.

Yelp
Stayed here the past 3 nights and utilized our daily $25 voucher. Saturday night the place was hopping and enjoyed all the board games around and the music. Bartenders were friendly and helped me order an non alcoholic beverage and alcoholic drink for my husband. The second night decided to get 2 brownie Sundays Togo, need a little more ice-cream and you can keep the whip cream. Last day enjoyed breakfast the avocado toast my husband said was good and I had the bagel sandwich. The bagel sandwich was dry and burnt but it's the thought that counts.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Very cool atmosphere to have a drink or two. Second time I stayed at Moxy. Decided to try the bar out for dinner. Friendly bartender and the food was pretty good.
google avatar

Leif L.

Yelp
This place is wacky and all exposed concrete. It gives a similar vibe as Hard Rock Hotel/Café, however it is overall an underwhelming dupe. This bar is on the 2nd floor of Hotel Moxy, a Marriott owned property. Overall the place is aggressive and in your face. The music is loud and gives the sense of trying to make you feel like a rock star but mostly feels confusing. The staff at the bar were pretty nice, my vodka soda was flat and they were happy to give me another. However, things were overall not great. The food and drinks were lacking in flavor and variety and the price was.. OOff given the quality. On the other hand, if you were at the hotel, the $25 promo is a pretty good deal. Tagline: the drinks and food were generally pretty sad and ambiance could be better
google avatar

Thanh L.

Yelp
What a great time. They had 80s music spinning . It had a nice vibe and staff was friendly. The food was a hit or miss. Wings were tasty but a bit fatty. The pizza was smaller then a personal size one. The drinks was also a hit or miss. Overall, a nice place to grab a drink and food
google avatar

Rui T.

Yelp
We came here before a comedy show at the Wilbur which was a great idea! The drinks are a bit on the pricier end (cocktails were $12-17) but they were delicious! I got the dragon berry cocktail which was light, refreshing, and beautiful looking as well! I absolutely loved the decorations on the second floor where the bar and lounge is. The view is great of downtown, and there are tons of board games/table games. Connect 4, cards against humanity, etc etc. Definitely want to come back here for the food, more drinks, and games during the day and night!

Barbara M.

Yelp
Drinks were insanely overpriced and not at all fresh, seemed to be made out of boxed juices or something. Meals were all from frozen and then microwaved. Snacks were unbelievably expensive (sorry, but I'm not paying $7 for one small granola bar). The staff were all grumpy. You can easily find someplace way better to go.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
This is a cool hotel bar on the second floor of the Moxy hotel. We stopped on two occasions and enjoyed the drinks and the bartenders both times. The Moxy cocktail was delicious and there was a decent selection of beer to choose from. There is adequate bar seating and tabled seating to the side with great views of the city below. We didn't go to the bar on Saturday but heard the music from our room on the fifth floor that night so there must be a DJ during certain nights of the week. There is a small bar menu but we didn't try any of the food. A fun stop, especially if you're staying at the hotel.
google avatar

Bekah B.

Yelp
Amazing service! Brie at the bar totally took care of us. She was very friendly and accommodating and made my friends and I feel welcome. The bar area itself is relatively small, but full of various board and card games. We had the "Got Moxy" drink and it was delicious! Great spot to begin the night with friends.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
I was trying to find the hidden cameras and expecting John Taffer to come in yelling at any moment

Marie C.

Yelp
Most customers are from the hotel to use their $25/night food credit and 2 beverage cards. Food came out fast but the tacos were entirely cold. Mediocre bar food. Beverage card lists drip coffee, really it's just a big weak coffee pot like at 7-11. Loud music.
google avatar

Martin S.

Yelp
They have good drinks and cocktails. The place is pricey and quite loud. Their meals, and pizzas are pricey. I wouldn't mind paying more just to get a good meal but damn, there's nothing special in their food for the price I have to pay. It's like eating a pizza hut straight from the microwave. Just go there for the drinks though.

Yelp
I went to this place on its opening night- October 4, 2019. This review only applies for the bar. Location: Right at the corner of Tremont Street and Stuart Street. It's directly across the street from the W hotel- you can't miss the marquee from a few blocks away!! Interior: You can take the stairs to build up your thirst or just take an elevator. The bar is average size. It is really cute in there. Beautiful wood tables and lots of places to sit - at the bar or on couches or around tables. You can get a view of Boston or play some games!! Drinks: The drinks are akin to NYC prices yet depending on what you get they put it in a small coffee mug FULL of ice! (Thumbs down) I didn't drink alcohol but I was told that some of the drinks need work. Don't know if that is attributed to the bartenders or just how they are trained to make drinks. Yes this is one of those bars that measure instead of free pour a drink. Side note: The female bartender with the dark hair and olive complexion (perhaps Arabic or Greek) was super cool! I tipped her extra. Food: The sausage was good as was the wings and margherita flatbread pizza. The main hang up with the food is that the kitchen closes early. It closes at 11pm because due to some MA law (allegedly) that the kitchen must close an hour before the bar. It didn't make sense to us since they were closing at 1am not 12am... Service: Our waitress was very attentive and nice. I didn't catch her name- she had semi curly hair and a number of tattoos on her hands/arms. Overall: I want to come back and see how they fair in a few months. If I were Moxy Management, I'd definitely work the kinks out with the kitchen because people like to eat when it's late at night! Or maybe my friends and I are just greedy!!
google avatar

Tevis P.

Yelp
It's the restaurant and bar to the hotel. It was a hot spot in the evening and at night for drinks. The drinks are a little pricey but everyone seemed to be enjoying them and the place. The restaurant leaves a lot to be desired in the quality of food given their prices. The staff were nice, although service was slow as they seemed overwhelmed with a poor and unorganized approach. As a guest of the hotel, I am glad to have this option but it could be improved with better quality, value and organization.
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
Food was not good. Pizza was hit or miss. Mine was good but my friends tasted terrible. Drinks were ok but pricey. Atmosphere was nice. Great vibe, and good for groups.

Yelp
One of the worst bar experiences ever. Ever. Frequent Moxy visitor, especially AZ. Nope, not here. Spanish music blasting at full volume on the saddest excuse for a sound system I've had to hear in a while. Drove 2 hours to come here to have a famous "Got Moxy" cocktail. The bartender with the creepy child rapist looking mustache and banana costume screwed up these drinks so bad they were undrinkable. We ordered 3 identical drinks, which all came out different colors?? Couldn't get out of there fast enough. It was sad to see business people trying to work on their laptops and stuff napkin pieces in their ears to block the unbearable sounds. Marriott brand, you've got a lot of work to do in here.

Justin L.

Yelp
this is a Walmart version of an upscale bar where staff can act pretentious but you in fact are at a bar with a DJ who plays other artists music as her own. also it isn't a rooftop bar.
google avatar

Lea L.

Yelp
My friend Amanda works there as a bartender and told me to come check it out. I had no idea about this place until she mentioned it to me. Their bar upstairs has really nice decor and the staff was all so nice. Their drinks were delicious and again the decor!!! This place is so authentic & filled with arts. I have now been recommending it to many of my friends as well! Perfect spot for group hang out or a nice cocktail date.

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect when walking in to Bar Moxy, but I really enjoyed the experience! So much ambiance and fun including a great view of Downtown, many places to sit and drink with friends (at the bar, tables and chairs, couches and pillows), an interesting variety of people, and plenty of board games and card games to choose from. ~ Not to mention a creative drink list ~ I'd definitely go back for more "Got Moxy" drinks!

Raquel G.

Yelp
Good for breakfast if you are staying in the hotel. I really enjoyed their breakfast sandwiches. Not the place for you if you are looking for like a fully functioning kitchen. Kind of like a Starbucks since everything was warmed. Very busy but nice people.

Aimee C.

Yelp
Go pretty much anywhere else...Terrible experience, we went before a show for a quick drink and snack. Service was terrible from the minute we walked in. All three servers were rude to us and pretty much everyone else that approached them. Ordering anything seemed to be an inconvenience. Service was slow and unenthusiastic. Every request seemed to be unwanted. They were out of one of the dips on the platter we ordered so instead of asking us if we still wanted it they replaced it with sad looking green olives and tried to pass it off as what we ordered even after I asked. The response I received when I inquired was less than helpful. For the prices/quality I would expect to get what I ordered or be offered the opportunity to choose something else. Food all seemed to be microwaved. Half the time the food prep person wore gloves half the time she didn't - meat to vegetables, good thing we didn't get sick and aren't vegitarians.
