Where to Drink in Charleston Right Now, March 2025

"Bar Polari owner Brent Compagni wanted to open a queer-friendly space with good cocktails and camaraderie. Polari refers to slang used by marginalized groups, such as the LGBTQ+ community. Drinks take their names from various secret languages, such as the Bibi (bisexual), made with tequila, Campari, grapefruit, lime, and strawberry syrup." - Erin Perkins

This is the place Dudley’s should inspire to be. So welcoming for even non LGBTQ+ and their drinks are amazing. So is their service. I love it here and as a woman I feel safe as well. I’ve been here a few times and will keep coming back!

Ordered the Nanti last night and it was, hands down, the best take on a old fashion I've ever had. Superb job to the bartender. Will be back.

From out of town but come to Charleston regularly. Was excited to see another gay bar option in town so checked it out. Asked and found out it's only been open a year but it was obvious it's already become a neighborhood staple. Everyone seemed to know each other but we felt very welcomed. House cocktaila were great! Highly recommend as long as you are willing to travel a bit from downtown.

Oh my gosh, I can’t say enough good things! Bar Polari is a home and safe space for all! The staff and drag queens are so friendly and welcoming, they make you feel like you’re part of the community. They always greet you with a smile and a kind word, and the drinks are always strong and on point. And let me tell you about the Sunday brunch events - they’re to die for! If you’re looking for a place to feel at home, this is the spot for you!

Trying out gay life near Charleston, and I'm happy to see something new! The vibe is chill, the drinks are delicious, and Rachel, our bartender was phenomenal!

Google
Great little neighborhood bar! A little dark but your eyes will adjust and the dim lighting will add some ambiance to your cocktail experience. The bartenders were good, especially the young woman behind the bar who was happy to chit chat while maintaining the long line of customers- very friendly- would recommend for a chill night or a Happy Hour around the bar with other locals!

It's a very relaxed atmosphere. The outdoor patio is a great, comfortable, and clean space.

First time in the bar Friday night with a group of friends from out of town and was very impressed. The bartender was great and so were the cocktails. Had so much fun we went back Saturday night as well!

Yelp
I came to Bar Polari for a special Taylor swift drag brunch event advertised on instagram. We bought the tickets early because were advised that they sold out, and they did. The tickets include the show and a catered brunch . There is also a full bar available. We arrived right on time but I drove around the block twice and could not find the place until a friend told me it is behind the Chicken restaurant on the hidden lot. Five minutes after the doors opened all the tables were taken but we were able to find bar stools together and we took them The venue is small, so no seat is bad to enjoy the show, so the bar worked out perfectly. The food was catered by a Hawaiian style chef and featured eggs, spam and grilled vegetables. It was overall a decent meal, but probably something I would not order from a menu. The show itself was amazing and all the queens gave it their all and it was a total blast with other fellow swiftes. I am excited to have such an inclusive and happy place in town. Everyone is just happy to be there and having a great time.

Yelp
An intimate LGBT bar with some classy leather booths and a list of charismatic cocktails. I enjoyed the couple cocktails I had such as the Arva and an espresso martini. Staff was friendly, but it's a pretty small spot. If you have a very large party, be sure to grab their single large one early.

Yelp
Bar Polari is the newest LGBTQIA+ community bar located in North Charleston, SC. Bar Polari is redefining what it means to be a gay bar and has a speakeasy vibe. It is gives off a sleek and cozy atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. I find the space gives off sensual and warm atmosphere provides a great place for date night, meeting friends, or meeting new people. This cozy atmosphere offers a full bar and signature drinks. Part of the draw for me is the ambiance and light music. At this time they do offer a food menu. Local dining establishments are located close by. The owner is very open and friendly. You are greater with a smile and hello. They support the LGBTQIA+ community. Check it out and decide for yourself.

Yelp
A friend and I were meeting another friend who was already here. We didn't stay but for a drink but it was long enough to want to come back. As I walked in the door I ran into a friend who asked if I had tried the Dirty Chai Martini to which we replied that it was our first time in. The way she explained it convinced us both to give it a go. We didn't even look at the menu. I guess I would explain it as being similar to an espresso martini but with a delicious cold foam on top. I don't do sweet drinks so I would only have one before switching to something else but it was delicious. I did need a couple napkins for my mustache though. Looking forward to coming back when the bar is busier.

Yelp
The atmosphere is cool. I'd say it's more for the guys. The drinks were good. Had a grilled cheese- didn't care for that. I could have saved my money and made that at home but we were hungry. Enjoyed playing the games they had to offer. Small and cute bar.

Yelp
Bar Polari is a wonderful and needed queer space tucked away off Reynolds avenue. They always have great music, tastefully crafted cocktails, and friendly staff who make you feel welcome. The bar is a perfect place to catch up with friends or make new ones either at the bar or outside on their patio. On weekends they host a variety of parties and events catering to all facets of the lgbtq+ community and have other rotating weekly events like bingo, drag race viewing parties, and trivia. It truly is an amazing asset for the community and is one of the few spaces of it's kind in the Charleston area.

Yelp
Bar Polari is a small, intimate bar that caters mainly to older gay men, but everyone is welcome. Drag performances and special events occur frequently. The full bar sparkles with specialty drinks concocted flawlessly by the barman. Drop in. Sit at the bar or booths. Unwind. Enjoy!

Yelp
My Husband and I really enjoyed ourselves. We have been looking for a LGBTQIA+ bar to just vibe and not yell to have a conversation. The bartender and owner are very sweet and great to talk to. They have a comfortable seating area inside and out. Can't wait to be back.

Yelp
Bar Polari has become one of my new favorite spots in North Charleston. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is welcoming, stylish, and refreshingly unpretentious. The bartenders are true artists--super knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their craft. Polari also has great music, friendly staff, and awesome entertainers. It's a queer-friendly space that feels safe, inclusive, and genuinely fun!

Yelp
Bar Polari has to be one of my favorite bars in Charleston. It's a great location for the community to gather and mingle with each other. The owner does a very nice job hosting different types of events to serve the LGBTQ community. I highly recommend if you are visiting or local to the area.

Yelp
We went for the first time last week and went really early after a dinner at Park Circle. There were only 3 or 4 other people but the guys behind the bar were super nice and made us feel at home. Cute place, tiny, cozy and lots of purple! We will definitely go back.

Yelp
What started off as a nice evening checking out a local bar when visiting from out of town turned sour by a pushy performer that's harassed and harangued my parter and I into some contest she was hosting on the mic at the front for the bar. We repeatedly told her that we were not interested just visiting town tonight, and want wanted a chill evening, but still she continued to made a spectacle of us to the entire bar, pushing us to compete together in her event. To the point where she sat at our table with her mic trying to egg us on to it and wouldn't leave us alone. I can absolutely appreciate a good drag host and a fun bar contest, but consent and respect of personal space should still be acknowledged. My partner and I felt taken advantage of. And yes, we finally acquiesced after she continued to make a scene, but we left immediately after. Visiting Charleston, we will not be coming back to Bar Polari with acts like that on their bill.
