The Best Bars in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Having conquered Verdun, the people behind Verdun’s Bar Palco turned their attention to giving the Village a neighbourhood bar, and super-friendly Renard is the result. It’s a little heavier on the cocktail side — get an Aperol spritz and take in the pedestrian street life on the terrasse at this LGBTQ-friendly spot." - JP Karwacki

A Look into Tendresse, the Vegan Restaurant Hitting The Village This Season | Eater Montreal

"Set in Montreal’s Gay Village, Bar Renard is known for chic cocktails and modern bistro dishes and markets itself as a safe space that represents the diversity of the neighborhood. I note that Renard has a fully wheelchair-accessible outdoor terrasse during the summer, and the team says this ethos of inclusion and accessibility is being carried over to their new project, Tendresse. Bar Renard is open every day from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m." - Audrey Carleton

UPDATE BELOW: Renard has been my go-to bar for more than a year. I’ve had great memories there with my friends, enjoying the music and the drinks. But on Saturday night, November 29th, 2025, something happened that completely shocked me. I ordered a drink, and the bartender—the only female staff member working that night—handed me the card machine showing a $30 charge. When I tried to politely correct her, she gave it back to me with a $40 charge instead. I literally asked, with all the politeness in the world and a big smile on my face, “Why am I paying this much for one glass?” All of a sudden, she exploded at me—yelling and screaming that I had ordered three drinks and then added another one. She then slammed the card machine onto the bar so hard that it probably broke. Her reaction honestly made me feel scared. *Update for the replay: Thank you for following up on this matter. In fact, none of the points raised are accurate, and I would like to clarify the situation with specific facts. * The security guard asked me to stay until the end of the night so he could speak with her at closing and then return to me. I was not waiting for her—you can verify this with him. He was the one who accepted my complaint while the other coworker, Jules, was rude to me, trying to cover for her by suggesting I report him instead. *The common-sense question here is: Why did she think I was waiting for her? And the answer is crystal clear. * You mentioned the issue started when I changed my order, but who said there was an issue if she claims she was the nicest person to me? And apparently, I hadn’t even responded with a single word—was it the table or chairs that went mad and started the issue? * I do not know what the cameras show, but I have two friends who were with me and felt unsafe watching her hit the card machine on the bar—it was audible even on a busy Saturday night. They can verify this. * I have no reason to make up stories. Bar Renard has always been my favorite place to party, enjoy my preferred drinks, and unwind, my only problem is the bad behavior and attitude from this particular bartender.

Going out for cocktails after work was very well deserved! We wanted to try this bar and its patio over the Summer but it was always packed, giving us the impression that this was a place to be and to have a good time. Yes we did and very much enjoyed our drinks on a nice (still warm) mid September evening. Friendly staff 👍

Very cozy place, light bar vibe, but better bring a company otherwise it's truly awkward

I was planning to spend a couple hours here with a friend, but chose to leave early due to bad vibes and an even worse bartender. The bartender was incredibly rude and demanded a tip at the first drink because "service is not included". Tips are something you get for good service and I don't know if you're using good alcohol, watering down my drinks, or you make them poorly yet. I don't even know if I like you yet, so that's something I reserve for the second or third drink. Then I will usually tip anywhere from $5-$10 (after the third drink). Entitlement is not attractive for a person or an establishment. Definitely won't be a place I come back to when visiting.

Nice vibes, friendly and helpful bartender. Tasty drinks. And the nachos were super good and huge plate. Definitely will come again 👏🏻😋

Google
Pretty bad first impression. Went in 15 mins after they opened (3:15) and the door was still locked… odd but whatever sometimes it happens. But then it became apparent that nothing and no one was prepared for service. Kitchen not ready to get orders, bar with no ice, no music, no chairs down off the table. Was truly odd. There were soooo many flies which was turn off as well. With enough experience in the industry I decided to leave since I realized it was not going to be a fun experience. Then I took a look at their most recent reviews and OUF the responses from the owner/manager is just terrible. I was excited to eat and drink at this bar for the first time but seems it’s taking a steady decline, too bad truly as it has potential. I may give them a second chance if I’m ever in the village again, but I’m apprehensive to say the least.

Google
Really cool place with a younger crowd (at least when I went!). Awesome and kind staff, and drinks were fantastic! It was a fun and easy-going atmosphere. And whoever controls the music has excellent taste 😊

Google
This is a nice place where we visited multiple times on our vacation. I found the serving size of the Naan Carbonara to be disappointing for the price, but it was good. Servers were friendly, and super busy.

Yelp
Poppin' When pregaming a techno show later that night, we stumbled upon Renard. We heard a pulsing beat and great oldies but goodies from outside, and had to come see what was going on. The place was packed full of pulsing peeps having a great time and setting 2018 off right. Keep on dancing, Renard.

Yelp
Great chill bar in the heart of Montreal's gay village. Staff is friendly and service is prompt. The ambiance is fun. Disco music and bar food like corn dogs (Pogo) and chips and salsa. Definitely a must visit to get the ambiance of the village.

Yelp
Located in the heart of the Village, and conveniently near the Beaudry stop, Renard is a fun bar to include in your evening plans. You have nice seating options inside and outside. Based on what liquor I saw on the shelves, they may not be able to make everything of interest to you, but the servers are glad to work with you to find something you'll enjoy. Cocktails are quite full in the glass with strong flavor. The servers check on you often. It's definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I was in Renard last night (Friday 28th/ Apr.), and I lost my jacket (black, with typical Adidas white stripes) that I hung up where all jackets were on the wall. I realized it was stolen around 1am when I was about to leave, and when I went to tell the bar tender to report it, he simply exploded laughing saying " this is a bar in the gay village, so deal with it". I didn't ask him to help me looking for it, but he could have at least told me who/ when to call, or show an act of sympathy, or offer to check the security camera later (my jacket is the the typical Adidas sport one which can easily be distinguished among others). Or maybe he was more concerned about bringing more vodka shots to the half naked drunk people almost, almost getting engaged in a sexual intercourse on the dance floor ?! ( check the surveillance camera or come every weekend to see for yourself). P.S.: a friend of mine had a similar experience recently in the gay village in another bar, but the staff there stopped working and offered immediate assistance helping him looking for his stolen jacket, then checked surveillance camera to provide footage to report the case. The next day ( today, April 29th), I found Renard's bar number online and called them, they said we don't have anything. When I asked if you could check the video surveillance, they said they won't unless the police is involved, and this is what will happen. This will be the LAST last time there for me or any of my case people in Renard. We prefer to go somewhere safe, or at least find some sympathy when close get stolen despite the fact there are surveillance cameras. Anyways, good luck with the police case.

Yelp
Great bar in Montreal with an amazing selection of beers on tap. The wine and cocktail options are awesome too. Fantastic place!

Yelp
Came here late on a week night for a drink and snack. The service was great and the food surprisingly good. I'd recommend checking it out if you find yourself in this part of Montreal. We walked into the dark bar/restaurant to find about a dozen people scattered in small groups throughout the restaurant. It wasn't dead, nor was it packed. It was just right. The music was a little loud, but we could still have a decent conversation. The waiter was really friendly. He couldn't find us an English menu though, so we kind of guessed at what was in the cocktails. They have wine, beer and cocktails. I ordered the rose gold, which turned out to be pretty good. We shared a large bbq nachos and the vegetarian appetizer plate that came with hummus, olive spread and bruschetta. The food was surprisingly good. The nachos were perfect in the sense that it had everything I wanted: chicken, bbq sauce, corn, cheese, tomatoes and peppers. I don't like beans, so thankfully there were none of those. The vegetarian appetizer plate came with these little slices of toast that were the perfect crunchiness. Great food, drinks and service! If only it were a little lighter so I could read the menu and a little less loud so I didn't have to raise my voice to talk to my friends, this place would be perfect!

Yelp
Renard is located in the Village near the Beaudry metro station. I always wanted to try this place, but whenever I got there it was always full of people (which is usually good news btw). Recently, I was in the area and decided to give it another try... and yay!! it wasn't too crowdy and I was able to get a table. The staff was amazing and very friendly. The music was loud but bearable. I wasn't that hungry, so I ordered a platter of cold meats and cheeses as well as marinated olives, a microbrewery beer and the fortune cocktail which comes with a fortune cookie of course! I would recommend this place for the awesome atmosphere and will definitely be back very soon!

Yelp
the best bar I've ever been to, the service was amazing, the music was such a vibe, and as a tourist it was a great experience

Yelp
The. Bass. Is. Way. Too. Loud. You can't hear yourself think with how loud the music is here. It's deafening. That's probably why everyone chooses to sit outside to be able to actually have a conversation.

Yelp
Great little bar/restaurant located right on Sainte-Catherine. The food was tasty, the drinks were awesome, and the staff were delicious!

Yelp
Presentation and service were both fabulous. We split some appetizers and left very satisfied.

Yelp
Drinks were cheap, dj was great, had a great night with friends. The crowd was older, probably 30s to 40s, but there was still dancing going on. Staff was really kind too!!

Yelp
Decided to go here on a whim and didn't regret it! started off with the Pretty in Pink cocktail, it came with topped with basil and was pretty good! The bread was super yummy and we asked for more (which I don't usually do- so that's saying a lot LOL) I had the soup de jour which was cream of asparagus, super tasty and creamy. For my entree I had the lamb shank. It was absolutely delicious and came with mashed potatoes, zucchini, cauliflower and smothered in a rich gravy. The meat fell off the bone and was perfectly cooked. Portion sizes are large, service was super friendly and helped with translating. A wonderful first meal of the trip!

Yelp
Of all of the Villages bars, Renard has easily become my favorite spot. It has a lounge feeling to it while still keeping the lights low and the music loud. The staff here is simply wonderful. They are efficient and they make great drinks. Try the barbecue shots, they're original and pretty tasty. Also, ask for @Marc-Antoine the tall, sexy server there. He's easy on the eyes and he's a blast to talk to!

Yelp
Was there a few hours ago. Art first, things looked very nice. I was just wanting a drink or two and something light to nibble on. Waiter arrived and I ordered a dry martini and the Plateau maraîcher which looked lovely. Martini arrived, I had a sip and it was fine. Then the food arrived quickly, it looked absolutely delightful. Immediately, the waiter arrived with the bill! I had not asked for the bill either in English or French. I looked at him quizzically, he said something in French that I did not understand. He fixed a stare at me, I thought this weird and rude. However, I begrudgingly paid and began to spread the first dip and waiter was hovering. He spoke in French again, I explained that I did not understand him. He proceeded to beg for the tip......this was too much. I explained to him I did not appreciate being rushed and insulted. I had not asked for the bill and was not happy feeling pressured. He began trying to say that this is how things are done.....I've been in Montreal long enough to know that this is not normal practice in restaurants. As a result, I gathered my things and left without eating a bite. I regret that I did not ask for my money back and speak with a manger. I would not recommend this place, I felt that I did not fit their "image" in terms of a customer base and were deliberately hurrying me along. A friend of mine who owns a business nearby confirmed that this was not normal business practice or good customer service.

Matylda K.

Yelp
Can't complain about the beers, wine or cocktail selection. I found them to taste good and fresh! The place can be loud at moments which makes it difficult to hear when you're with a big group. Atmosphere is relaxed, festive; it's definitely a cool spot to hang out. Sometimes people dance as the music and setting is befitting. Although the place looks edgy, I find the interior design to be too dark - it's hard to see your friends at the other side of the table! But that's not a show stopper as long as they serve quality beverages - which they do.
google avatar

Naoufel T.

Yelp
It is been a while since a trendy bar opened in the village. This place is always packed for some reasons, maybe it shows that we need more spots like these in the village. I really liked the ambiance, they really thought about the design. Bar tenders are pretty chill, I find it pretty loud at times so it is hard to have a conversation.

Yelp
Just. Freakin. Fantastic. Great drinks that you won't find anywhere else. Food is surprisingly good. The service is impeccable and the music/decor is impressive. Take a selfie in the bathroom. Flowers are so in this year hehe.

Yelp
Dropped by here on a Sunday night based on a friend's recommendation; I was not disappointed. Loved the ambiance and decor. The staff were extremely friendly and sociable (Etienne is just the type of bartender you want, and he is great with recommendations). It is alap a great first date location for anyone seeking one. I will definitely return.
