"The owners of Barrio and Shimshon are leveling up the social scene in Bend with a sultry look, transforming the long-beloved Barrio into Bar Rio. Here, friends gather in dark corners to share pork carnitas-topped plantain jibaritos, tender fried cauliflower atop beet labneh, or the best paella in town. Bar Rio is also a strong stop for happy hour, which runs from 3 to 6 p.m. No reservations or minors at any time." - Barb Gonzalez

My boyfriend and I stopped in here for a quick bite while exploring downtown Bend. The service was great— the staff was on-point and attentive to our needs. It was Happy Hour, so I had the tamarind whiskey sour and my boyfriend had a margarita. Both were delicious! I especially enjoyed the whiskey sour. It was so fresh and lemony. For food, we tried their current special: the middle earth flat bread. It was very tasty! I loved the goat cheese. I would definitely eat it again!

Im really sad about how much this place has changed since the last time I was here in 2020. The paella used to be HUGE, loaded with goodies and delicious. The best paella in the PNW, I would dream about it. But now, its just a shadow of what it used to be, its mediocre at best. The drinks were very good, some of the tapas still hold up, but I don't understand why they ruined something so great like the paella recipe they once had. Probably never coming back because I was so disappointed... The new paella is dry and tasteless, barely had any ingredients, was mostly rice and very small. Picture attached is what the paella used to be like, you be the judge.

My husband and I came here for lunch, and we had to stay for dinner because we wanted to try the dinner menu as well. Everything from the cocktails and food, to the music, service, and atmosphere, was absolutely amazing. We tried the gorgonzola pasta from the lunch menu and their cuban sliders from the dinner menu, and both were phenomenal. The flavors are wild and we have a plan to come back and work our way through the menu to try all the different cocktails and dishes. Can't wait for our next date night!

Google
Their cocktails are so good! My new favorite cocktail place in town. Their paella is even better than the one that I had in Spain

Google
Had a great time at Bar Rio with live music and late night happy hour! Great margs and tapas! The tamale with egg is so good, going to have to try that at home!

Google
We stopped in just for a drink. They have a great cocktail menu, almost too many options to choose from. We did not try any of the food as we already ate, but we will likely be back to try. Their happy hour menu has some great deals so make sure to check that out.

We had such high spirits coming in, and low spirits leaving. After hearing phenomenal things about this place, we were so excited to try it out. The short haired gal that took our drink and food orders acted from the get go like it was an inconvenience to serve us. We ordered drinks, chips and dip, and our lunch. As for the drinks, I was shocked to find out at the end that each iced tea is $5, no refills so we paid $10 for my two. Maybe this is standard for the area, seemed crazy to us. We thought the chips and dip would come before our meal like any other place, but they must have forgot or something and didn’t bring them until after we were finished with our lunch. So then we had this whole plate of food we kind of didn’t want at this point and still had to pay full price for. We picked at it but left most of it behind as you can’t really take chips, guac, and salsa for later. The tacos we did get were good. I will say the second gal that came to take care of us half way through was much sweeter than the original lady. I really hate to leave anything but a positive review on a business but we really felt off put by the service in particular. Posting this so maybe the business owner can take note and try to curate a more positive and inviting environment.

Google
Bar Rio is my new favorite spot in town! All the things that were loved from the old Barrio, but with a new elevated twist. The tapas menu is perfect for a few bites on a date night or even to share a bunch with a group. The staff is super welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu and makes you feel at home. You can tell there’s a lot of love and care being put into every cocktail and dish that’s being served. There’s a nice outdoor lounge out back that’s perfect on a sunny day or even to cool down in the evening. The interior is beautifully curated and compliments the whole vibe of the place. I’m excited to have a new cocktail bar in Bend!

Lisa C.

Yelp
Too pricey for average food and drinks. The cocktails were nothing special, on the weak side. The chips and guacamole were good but expensive. The pasta was very good but the paella was not. Service was excellent and nice ambiance.

Jillian C.

Yelp
This is an easy five stars! The food was OUTSTANDING. Every dish we ordered was packed with flavor. Not to mention the portions were generous! The scene here was very modern and cool. The waiters were noticeably friendly and efficient. I can't wait to come back next time I visit Bend.

Nina C.

Yelp
This place was so yummy! Right in the cute downtown bend area, they're set up so that you kind of seat yourself, which when we went tables were all full and we had to kind of figure out who was already waiting but we were able to get a table before too long. The server was really sweet, we ordered a few different things, the filet mignon steak, the green beans, the plantains with carnitas, the steak was interesting the meat was cooked well and was layered with chips (could have used more chips bc it was so good and only had 1 chip between each piece but the sauces were delicious). The green beans were seasoned and cooked well and paired nicely with the steak, and the pork carnitas with tostones tasted great

C N.

Yelp
Creative and tasty food. The wings were great, the bravas was less exciting. Bit pricey for the portions

Yelp
THE FOOD IS AMAZING! Seriously!! Very unique and incredible tasting, high-end food with an impressive variety and selection which made choosing nearly impossible. This was a truly awesome dining experience in a very fun, classy, energy-filled bar/restaurant! We went for "Whiskey and Wings Wednesday"...ended up having whiskey, craft beer, amazing steak bites, TASTEY humus - AND maybe the best gourmet (YES, gourmet!) wings we have ever had!, and 3 orders of some of the best prepared and tasting wings ever! Ambiance & Service: The place was buzzing with both locals and winter visitors, cool (hip) music playing, laughter and lively conversations filled the place - made for a very cool "vibe" for sure! And even though it was very busy (and given how great the food and ambiance is, I totally understand why) the Service was still very attentive and extremely friendly! PRICE: I expected the bill to be well over $150 before tip for the two of us. UNDER $100!!- And we seriously ate and drank a TON!! Thank you Bar Rio - can't wait to come there again!!

Kayla N.

Yelp
Incredible place!! Easily one of the best places in all of Bend and we will be back every time we return to the area! The bartender was amazing and his drinks were incredible! Everything we ordered was soooo good and the ambiance was perfect. Highly recommend

Yelp
What a consistently great place this is! I'd give 4.5 stars if I could. We came around 5:45 on a Friday and had to wait 30ish minutes. They must be under-staffed because there were a number of empty tables. The ambiance gives you fun art to look at and the restaurant is divided into a couple of indoor and an outdoor space in the back. Our server was friendly and confident, but she didn't know a lot about the ingredients on the menu, or that the shrimp had sauce choices. Must have been new. We liked her a lot, though! I ordered the margarita Fresca, which was delicious (I actually subbed out the agave for triple sec) along with the chips, salsa and guac. They came where the guac was scooped into a pool of red and green salsa, which I liked. I have to admit, I first judge a restaurant on the quality of chips and salad. The chips were thicker, perfectly salted and delicious! The salsa and guac were enjoyable enough, but nothing I'd come back for. I then ordered the street corn from the tapas menu and the shrimp from the mezze menu. The shrimp was a generous portion and came with a tomato, cucumber salad. It was very tasty with the mango dip (which I got to go with the corn, but might have chosen the garlic dip otherwise). The corn was okay. It wasn't the best street corn I've had. I'm not sure why, but I just found it a bit bland-wanted to like it more. My friend got the cochinita pibil tacos and said they were excellent. I definitely recommend this restaurant!

Veronica M.

Yelp
Ok, so this one was a bit of a mixed review. Although I liked the food it wasn't what I was expecting, making it a bit less enjoyable on my part. First, the place on Yelp said it was closed so I I wasn't able to check-in. It wasn't, obviously. There was a 45mins waiting list and no place to sit. They have a small couch that fits about 3 people on the corner. The decor was nice but nothing fancy. They have two rooms for the tables. They have a bar area. The staff was friendly. We had the paella and the tacos. The chip and salsa and the hibiscus soda, ginger, and passionfruit I believe. The paella had too much saffron and the chorizo or other smoky flavor made it overwhelming to have it as a full meal. The tacos were gone and my friend had no complaints. We, paella eaters, were not as pleased. Overall I would recommend it and I would come back and try other items on the menu. They do have a good flavor based so I believe a bit of "less is more" when it comes to already strong flavors would be good to implement here on that dish. The drinks were delicious and the chips and salsa too.

Deborah L.

Yelp
Loved what we had to eat! It's small & kind of crowded. We got a seat in the back that was a little cramped. But the meal was worth it! Would definitely go again!

Dallas A.

Yelp
Mmmm, absolutely delicious tacos here at Barrio! The seasoning on the carne asada meat was great by itself, but add the combination of salsa, avocado, onions, and feta, and you've got yourself quite the tasty taco. I also tried a bite of the pineapple and pork taco, which was also quite good. On top of the food, our server was nice and very attentive, which made for a pleasant experience. I would recommend Barrio to anyone looking for a bite in Bend!

Bethany D.

Yelp
The best chips/salsa/guacamole!! YUM. A little pricey in my opinion, but SO tasty! Great spot for a drink! Lots of seating variety indoors and outdoor.

Meg H.

Yelp
Great food, great atmosphere, great cocktails!! This place was a gem on our visit to Bend. We loved the live music! We ate the papas bravas, chips and queso, and the summer salad and it was all 10/10 delicious. Perfect place to happen upon!

Austin P.

Yelp
In a last minute dinner scramble while downtown, we ended up being able to get a table here. The atmosphere was very mellow and calm, and our server was kind. We started with a round of cocktails. All of the cocktails were good, but the Tel Aviv Sour was my favorite. We ordered a seafood paella and falafel to share, and then each of us ordered tacos. I got the chicken tinga, honey and garlic grilled chicken, and rockfish tacos. The paella and falafel were delicious, but the tacos were very disappointing. One of the chicken tacos seemed dry, and the three tasted so similar that I had no idea which one was the fish taco. In any case, I'd come back and explore more of their Middle Eastern menu, because their ME-inspired dishes seemed to be much tastier than their Mexican-inspired dishes.

Ashley J.

Yelp
Delicious craft food and drinks with good service! They even have fun non-alcoholic drinks too.

Lori B.

Yelp
Have loved Barrio for years. Come here every time we are in Bend. They have reinvented themselves into Bar Rio. 21+ only. Super nice decorations and new modern feel. The food is every bit as good. Service? Meh. The bartender was great, however our gal took our order, brought us the drinks and food. Then we never saw her again. She would walk by our table many times, but didn't act like she cared. We will always go back, but the lack of service did deflate us a bit.

nathan t.

Yelp
had an amazing time here! came to pregame with the girls and Camille was so good . I love her so much she was such a good server. She really ate it up and helped us out a lot with everything we needed. We definitely come back after the extraordinary service. I have came for and didn't get the best service so I'm glad I gave it a second chance!!

Amalphy A.

Yelp
shrimp/chicken paella- nasty. chicken was tough& shrimp was okay. paella should have more sauce in it. it was being dry. the ambiance is nice- heard good things about the drinks! so maybe you only go there for that! customer service was amazing too

Jordan L.

Yelp
Super yummy tacos!!! We followed the recommendation of our server and got the Birria platter and the cochinita pibil tacos. So so yummy!! They were rather quick with our order as well. Maybe ~10 min? Good tacos, fun vibes

Ashley M.

Yelp
Tasty Spanish food for Bend. Their margaritas are good too. We ordered paella last time which was very fun, even though my Spanish friend informed us that it wasn't very authentic! Still tasty though!

Pamela C.

Yelp
Fantastic service, unusual and imaginative cocktails and tapas. Great fun, try it out!

Anastasia C.

Yelp
The menu options are nice and varied. The drinks were delicious. Had the chicken tacos, steak and hummus. The chicken tacos were topped with pickled onion that were so sweet and delicious. The only complaint is the music was way too loud. Not a good option for large parties I think.

Candi R.

Yelp
Found this place walking downtown Bend. Great find! We had an awesome paella. Opted for the combo ... seafood, chorizo and chicken. It was delicious!! They also had several choices of tacos, a burger and a few other selections. We ordered 3 different taco and it was suggested to try the pineapple, mushroom taco. Was a nice refreshing choice. Great drink and beer menu. I ordered the coconut margarita..... and then another!! Lol you have to try it! The staff were friendly and very accommodating. Nice relaxed atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. Don't miss this place if you're looking for some great food and drink!

David F.

Yelp
No complaints. Service was quick and with a smile. Nice and roomy inside. Tried the paella with chorizo and chicken. (I make a great paella so this was a close 2nd although I do add peas and peppers). Hummus was thick and the fundido was excellent. The menu is different from their website so be aware of that. I wanted to try a corn dish that they quit serving but I'll be back.

Donna R.

Yelp
Amazing food! The tapas are so fresh and flavorful! Great happy hour prices too. The tacos were full of delicious chicken

Jake J.

Yelp
This place is super good. Probably the most reasonably priced cocktails in downtown bend. Lisa is a solid server

Susan C.

Yelp
Got here early as things are ramping up in Bend for in restaurant dining. Five of us enjoyed finally getting out and sharing a meal we didn't cook! Chips, gauc and sauces were delicious. Some of the best chips we have ever eaten and we've had a lot! Everything was truly wonderful. I ordered the mole flank steak with a side salad. Perfectly seasoned and melt in your mouth experience. Other orders I apicy fried cauliflower, shrimp in some yummy sauce with excellent grilled bread. The wagu beef hamburger, quite large, the plantain sliders, enchiladas- all served pretty quickly and hot off the grill. It is a little dark in here but cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Cathy M.

Yelp
Showed up Sunday within online listed hours, closed an hour before advertised. Due diligence management team?

Nicole Z.

Yelp
So...I hate writing this because I've supported Barrio since it opened. It was one of my favorite restaurants in town. But as a local have thus supported Bar Rio when they changed. I had been really happy with the new place. But tonight, I was really upset when the paella I have always ordered was half of what it used to be. Literally half. Felt like I was completely ripped off as a customer. Not sure I will be going back after all these years:(

Brittany L.

Yelp
Saw this restaurant on Google, and as it had many great reviews and the line was out the door we decided to give it a try and wait for a table . Took about 20 minutes for us to get our table. We ordered drinks and our food from the delicious menu. We ordered the Jibarito Pork Carnitas, Cuban sliders, and grilled green beans. Honestly, didn't expect this level of delicious tasting food from such a small town. My partner and I are out of towners, and Bend really blew us away. The food was extremely well seasoned, the Jibaritos we're cooked perfectly, and the marinated purple onions were a great addition. The green beans were full of flavor being that it had a piece of dried ham and garlic all over which I thought was a nice touch. The Cuban sliders had such a fantastic sauce around it, but I couldn't stop grabbing one more bite. Perfectly paired with the chips and pico de gallo. Being that we are from Miami, which is basically Cuba... the Cuban sliders were a real treat and unexpected for this trip to Oregon. Very happy we decided to go with barrio restaurant.

Ted S.

Yelp
Great craft cocktails and tapas. Servers are friendly and efficient. Cool bar area and great to sit outside on a sunny day

Lea A.

Yelp
I'm so bummed. This place is on the right track but wow! Have they never heard of flavor !?! For a Latin fusion place the street corn is bland, the gazpacho is over the top and should be listed as a dessert and the paella ... oof, the rice was too hard and undercooked, it lacked saffron and salt and generally flavor; however, the octopus and squid were cooked well (not chewy , not hard)... in fact all the seafood was cooked well. Piece of sausage that were so thinly sliced were over charred, and too crunchy. Street corn... ugh have you not been to LA or had legit street corn!?! At least salt the water or corn 30 minutes prior to cooking. The first time I came here I was starving and enjoyed the Cuban sliders and jibarito ... maybe it was because I just did a lot of hiking or maybe whoever was cooking did it right? Place is on the right track but man ... I was just so let down . Made me miss LA... and I hate LA these days.

Leah M.

Yelp
Best margaritas in town and a killer deal at happy hour (ends at 5pm). Amazing service - I was impressed by how many times they checked in on us during an hour there. Fun, trendy atmosphere with mid century modern decor. Definitely recommend!

Melissa U.

Yelp
Just as great as the time we came here to eat last year during our Bend trip! Service was fast and super friendly, and the food was amazingly healthy and delicious!

Alfred S.

Yelp
Friendly service. Interesting non alcoholic drinks. Limited menu. The food was not bad but on the bland side. Noisy.

Anne M.

Yelp
I'm just not sure... loved the food here before the pandemic came and they closed for quite a while. No idea if it's new ownership or just new menu but it's totally different. The veggie paella was good, and my friend said her house paella was also good. Chips, salsa and guacamole delicious! The other 1/2 of the menu is now an Israeli menu. Kind of weird combo. Most disappointing was their lack of wine options. A chard from Chile, semi-sweet white from Spain and an Israeli sav blanc that just wasn't good. Three reds and that's it. Was disappointed that the patio wasn't open (probably staffing) nor could you sit at the bar. Service was good and if I go again, I'd try the Israeli side of the menu..: but it's going to be hard to be better than the Lebanese restaurant directly across the street

Kenzie D.

Yelp
Amazing food, cocktails, and ambience! I love going here with my friends on weekends and catch up.

Annie R.

Yelp
I usually love this place. Great margaritas but....they changed their menu a bit and their vegetarian tacos have gone downhill (mostly just corn now). We took my dad (who has to watch his diet) out for what we thought would be a good dinner. Though the portion size was not an issue, the veggie paella was mostly rice without many veggies. Unfortunately he was not impressed. I hope they adjust the menu again.

Scott P.

Yelp
* * * What an Oasis on a holiday weekend, especially after an unsatisfying meal at Broken Top Bottle Shop the previous day. Some nicely prepared dishes, delightful and professional service ... and they were kind enough to set up the table by the window. That way we could watch people on the sidewalk, while they tried to act like they weren't looking at our amazing food. My favorite of the day was Halibut Cheeks ($12) over a really nice mixed green salad with roasted corn and black beans! Superb. Light flavorful and just perfect!! My mezcal cocktail was weak and nothing special ($11) so bummed :( Watermelon Gazpacho !!!YUM!!!!! Just a hint of heat from peppers ... with chunks of watermelon ... I'm just saying it was superb ($7 bowl). My wife loved the Pozole ($9) - much better than Spork's ... she also said it was fresh and tasted clean with just enough of and the right spices. Our Guacamole and salsa with chips ($6) was innovative in presentation and tasted good. Not great - but serves its purpose to get us started. Our server (darn, sorry on her name) was delightful. She was always around, but unobtrusive ... professional, informed about her restaurant offerings and geez Super Polite!!! A Pro. We visited on June 29th Saturday at 2pm, uncrowded and inviting space for the weekend prior to the 4th of July. Apologies for the poor photos ... Barrio deserves better images from me.

Ryan Y.

Yelp
Service is solid. The distancing between tables is excellent. We were at least 8 ft from the neighboring tables. The menu was very good. Chips, Guac, and Salsa are a great appetizer. Great variety of tacos. You can mix and match proteins in a single order. We had three tacos; chicken, carnita, and pineapple/bacon. I would not recommend the pineapple and bacon. The paella is their specialty. A small can serve 2 people. Medium for 4 and Large for 6. The paella is good, but not authentic. The flavor is good, but the way they cook it is not traditional. It would seem they cook the proteins separately, then plate them on a bed of rice. The seafood had rockfish, salmon, squid, and shrimp. Wish there were some mussels. They don't take reservations and it's first come, first serve. There is a public parking lot behind the restaurant.

Matt E.

Yelp
It's been a few years since I've visited Bend, but the last time I was here I was pretty sure that Barrio was a completely different restaurant? It's definitely got more fast casual vibes than I remember in the past, but everything was still super tasty, so I'll still take it! We split a few things to eat: seafood paella, fried cauliflower, and cuban sliders. All of it was great! I'm a general sucker for paella, and as the bf doesn't really like things with tentacles, it's always a good thing for us to split if I want extra bites of calamari and octopus. I did let him have an extra slider, which worked in his favor. They were super flavorful and this dish could easily be one person's meal. The fried cauliflower was also very good. We both ordered a couple of flavored margaritas. I have vague memories of them being delicious. And judging by those vague memories, they were at least strong! Way to be, Barrio. I'd like to return, though I will admit I'm sad they no longer offer the full service experience. But hey, there's probably a good reason for that. Give them a try!

Davis T.

Yelp
Let me start with the positives. Our waitress was extremely nice and the service overall was good. The drinks here were stellar. I would come back just for them. However, the food was pretty bad. We ordered a few appetizers, and everything was ok but nothing really stood out. For a main, three of us split a large paella and it was pretty inedible. The manager who brought it over told us the dish it was in would be really hot... but it wasn't. It was as if it had been sitting on a counter for hours, so we were not sure why he would lie to us or if it was just habit. Our paella had egg and it which was rubbery and cold. The chorizo was cold and burnt. The bacon was the only item well cooked. Overall, we left feeling pretty dissatisfied.

Stephen L.

Yelp
Came here and ordered some paella for two. The portions actually could have easily served three people, and was very tasty - nothing spectacular but a good place to eat otherwise.

Aparna B.

Yelp
Love this place! We've been here twice now and both times we've thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Last night we stopped here for dinner. We got the patatas bravas and jibarito for appetizers and both were executed perfectly. They had the perfect crunch and softness to them. For mains, I had the mushroom and corn enchilada and the husband got the seafood paella (no fish, extra shrimp) and we both enjoyed both dishes. I really recommend this place if you're in the mood for Latin cuisine and their outdoor patio is always fun to hangout!

Corey B.

Yelp
Not sure what the thinking was behind the decision to split Barrio's menu with another restaurant that has entirely different cuisine but it was a judgement error. Barrio's menu was outstanding before. Now half of some of their best dishes have been removed for dishes from another cuisine that really don't belong on Barrio's menu. What we did order (Jibarito's, the corn and a salad paled in comparison to the flavors prior to their changes. It feels like a cheap imitation of what Barrio used to be. It's a shame to see another Bend restaurant not upholding their prior standard.

Kaitlin H.

Yelp
We stopped here before a concert and had a great meal! We tried a few different taco varieties, margs and shared a corn dip. They can have some cross contamination in the frier so offered cucumbers sliced up instead, which was so nice of them. The corn dip was so good, it was all our favorites. The margaritas were perfect, not too sweet and refreshing. Celiac husband had no issues - we'd definitely come back!

Tatum D.

Yelp
This place was phenomenal!! We came in for late night tapas and the food absolutely blew us away. Great ambiance, great cocktails, great service, exactly what we were looking for. The next time we visit Bend we will for sure be back!!

Ga M.

Yelp
Very good food! I had the special which was salmon ceviche, it was amazing. My husband had tacos and we shared chips guacamole and salsa. It tasted great. I have three stars because the service, unfortunately, not the best.

Guy W.

Yelp
A good taco option if you are looking for something easy and predictable. Heads up, the back patio is covered but gets VERY WARM during the summer.

Kelly R.

Yelp
Just stumbled upon this gem in Bend, Oregon - Bar Rio! This place is now at the top of my favorites list! It's the perfect blend of lively ambience, top-notch service, and mouthwatering tapas and cocktails. Trust me, the tapas here are like no other - fresh and full of innovative flavors. The staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the amazing experience. If you haven't been here yet, you're seriously missing out.
