Montreal’s Best Dive Bars for Karaoke, Jukeboxes, and Cheap Beers | Eater Montreal

"Karaoke and dive bars go together like milk and cookies, and Sel et Poivre is one of the premier venues in town for it. It’s been around for over 40 years, and has made a point of offering bottom-barrel prices no matter what decade it’s pulling pints in." - JP Karwacki

The manager smokes inside. This environment is toxic

Quebec karaoke is a beautiful thing and this bar is a solid gold place to experience it. The staff are friendly and the interior is mirrored with neon pink, it's gorgeous. Came here for my birthday twice. Always a great spot (except for the song registering machine, it's a bit wacky)

Look. I've been to my fair share of karaoke bars, so I know how the drill works. You put in a song with your name and you wait your turn. However, the DJ at this place was displaying some serious favouritism. We were there long before 10pm and got our names in the queue early, and yet the table next to ours arrived after us and sang 3-4 songs each while we sang only one song each, despite putting in multiple song requests in early in the night. In one case, we put in our request at 10:45pm and by 1am we still hadn't been called up. Also, when we first entered, we hadn't even had a second to catch up with our friends (who had already ordered) before a waitress was trying to get a drink order from us. Which could be fine depending on context, but she then demanded we pay immediately. This was all before we'd even finished removing our winter gear. Come on, we're obviously going to order a drink, give us 5 minutes to settle in! It did not make us feel very welcome. All in all, a very disappointing night. I would recommend you look elsewhere for karaoke.

Very unwelcoming attitude, the barmaid threathened to kick us out if we did not drink as soon as we came in. Bad service in general, she talked to us with a bad attitude and expected a generous tip. It was cash only and wouldnt give a receipt. One of the employees made a racist comment toward one of my friend who is a poc… Worse experience in a bar ever, dont go.

Bar with a nice ambiance. The decor is tacky but cute; but this bar been open for a long time, so there's a nostalgia feel to it. The karaoke system is on point and the MC is passing people at a steady pace. The clientele is mostly french. So if you don't know other languages than English, you might have difficulties. The only reason it doesn't have 4 star is that the place is very small.

What a nice little Bar. Had a great night with my family. The DJ was awesome, and was great with all the customers. Some beautiful singers. The Bar Maid was so sweet. Very friendly crowd. Would love to go back some time.

8 minutes in i was told I had to buy a drink or leave. It wasn't packed or anything. My friend had bought a drink but I wasn't ready yet. I understand they are a business but I just had a drink elsewhere and wanted to settle in an relax first.
