Bar Siena is a place so great, you have to try it twice! - or so, that's what I initially thought. Unfortunately, the food presentation/quality is inconsistent here. After deeply enjoying the Octopus, Gnocchi, and Truffle Pizza a couple of months ago, I hesitated to deviate from these menu items upon my second visit.
Regarding the octopus, almost instantaneously I noticed a difference in plate presentation and quality. Last time, not only did the octopus lay on a bed of oil, but it was topped with a vibrant, garlicky, and tangy celery chimichurri that became the lifeline and staple of the meal. This time, however, the octopus laid on bed of a green sauce and balsamic vinegar...without any garnish. I preferred its taste and presentation from before, though I did enjoy the sauce. It was amazingly spicy and the sweet aged balsamic vinegar added an intense flavor and great dimension to the mild white meat.
The gnocchi was warm, pillow soft, and the dumpling themselves tasted great. However, this time they put way too much sauce on the bottom of the plate. Mind you, this sauce is so thick, rich, and heavy; it quickly became so overpowering where I couldn't stomach eating a lot of the pasta. The extremely sweet prosciutto sausage didn't complement the meal to any degree.
The Truffle Pizza lacked one key and vital ingredient: truffle! I am adamant that the chefs forgot to drizzle the truffle oil on - it merely tasted like cheese and mushrooms. Given that Truffle is very strong and potent, I know I would've tasted even the smallest amount.
There were only two menu items that brought this review to three stars: the No 15 Cocktail and the Burrata. The No 15 Cocktail had a large and wide flavor profile: first it's sweet from the cherry syrup and slightly tart from the lime. From there it rapidly rises to a strong licorice note, holds its key, and mellows out into a largely bitter but sweet ending. Truth be told, it's a drink I'd order five times over. I also thought the Burrata was impressive - the cool, creamy cheese was touched with but not overwhelmed by the sweet infusion from the apricot. I didn't notice any spice, but the cheese itself was fluffy, light, smooth, and spills out on the grilled bread so naturally when you're using it as a spread.
Still - you've had a better dinner, maybe even this week. With that, nothing here is magical enough to help you forget the cost of each entree.
