The Best Bars in Quebec City | Eater Montreal

"Hidden off the beaten paths of touristy Old Québec, the Ste-Angèle is a popular destination for live jazz and cocktails (in pitchers, no less). Note that it doesn’t open until 8 p.m., generally speaking." - Allison Van Rassel

Came here on a Saturday night to enjoy some drinks and jazz with my partner and we had a fantastic time. The musicians were really talented and it was cool that everyone at the bar was focused on listening to and enjoying the music. It’s a real cozy and intimate spot- definitely a tight squeeze, so I recommend getting there before the band sets up (that was around 11 when we were there)

We looked up jazz clubs in Quebec City and found that St. Angeles was just down the street from our hotel. It was a true gem! A real jazz club where people came to listen to the music, not just have it playing in the background. The drinks were very reasonably priced and the service was very nice. We stayed for 4 hours and really enjoyed the music. It’s a very small space, so you need to get there early. We highly recommend it for people who love jazz.

One of the highlights of our Quebec City vacation and totally unexpected. A guide suggested Bar Saint Angele the day before and we decided to check it out. Very friendly atmosphere. Even though we don’t speak French we were greeted with smiles and made welcome.

Cool vibe. Hole in the wall jazz bar. Didn't feel touristy. Music was next level.

My wife and I like to visit jazz bars when we travel. NYC, Paris, etc. Last night we got extremely lucky and found Bar Ste-Angele in Québec City. It was the best music and service experience for this style of music I have ever had. Granted, I am a rock and soul musician, but the 4-piece band, Groove Street (sax, keys, bass and drums) played accessible fusion jazz better than anybody I’ve heard. Small bar, held around 30 people or so. We sat at the end of the bar about 5 feet from the musicians. The owner was friendly, the servers were great, the sound quality was superb. If you visit QC you have to experience this. 5 stars all around.

One of the best late night spots in Old Quebec City. I always come for drink when I’m around. The music is lovely and the vibes are 10on10!!

Google
Jazz Bar. Good acoustics and a good band the night I was there. Good acoustics and atmosphere.

Bar Ste-Angele is one of the best bars I’ve ever visited. If you appreciate great music and a cozy atmosphere, I highly recommend checking it out. Whether you're a jazz aficionado or just looking for a delightful night out, this bar will not disappoint. I had a fantastic time and can’t wait to return!

Yelp
Decent drinks & prices. But the BEST thing is that this intimate bar showcases its in-house Jazz band (a bass guitar, cello, & drums player) that plays fantastic live Jazz music throughout the night. Come early at 8pm to nab seats!

Yelp
Second night we tried to come here.... we did get a seat upstairs. They are very friendly and accommodating trying to find a place to sit. For drinks is lacking, ordered a cosmopolitan, she asked if I want a double, sure.... was lotta glass of cranberry juice with a shot of vodka. So come and listen to talent but don't expect comfort seating or great drinks

Yelp
It was a very nice ambience. The music was awesome! Great service too! They don't have food but will let you bring something in from a different restaurant. Get there earlier since it's a small place and gets busy.

Yelp
Probably my favourite bar I've ever been to. Amazing in-house jazz band coupled with a friendly staff and good but affordable drinks. The place is decorated in the same style as an old fashioned lounge so when that music gets going it feels like being transported into another time period. Definitely give this place a look if you have the time!

Yelp
Wow, fantastic place! Off the beaten path but not too far, it's a bit hidden but once you're in, you won't want to leave. Whether you're in the mood for a local beer or a cocktail, the wait staff is friendly and attentive. In addition, they have live music on the weekends starting at 22:30 so get there early, cozy in and enjoy!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and so glad we did. Very chill vibe, great drinks, and the music! Put on your lounge wear or whatever you call it and go.

Yelp
Great spot for music, drinks and meeting new people. If you are in town you have to stop in here!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I spontaneously came here on our first night in Quebec. We walked in around 8 pm, the place was dead but the friendly bartender told us the live "jam session" would be starting at 9. We ordered some drinks ( a beer for my boyfriend and I indulged in the Nutty Russian). Closer to 9 the place filled up! We were so happy we got their early. When the music started we were very impressed by the musicians. This place will not disappoint.

Yelp
This place is an outstanding little haunt on a side street in the Old City. As we made our way down Rue Sainte Angèle to the mostly-nondescript entryway, the music became audible. As we made our way down the stairs into the dim, small, full, lively subterranean grotto of a space, the music felt crackling. The jazz was alive, the performance was invigorating, and the crowd was paying close attention, as if the bass might gain enough vibration to levitate. The player picked and banged away at it, coaxing appreciative toe-tapping throughout the place. We were lucky enough to slide into a banquette seat, order a cocktail and a beer, and then focus on the task at hand, which was all about the music. This was one of those places where, as I eased in and took stock, I had that unmistakable, victorious feeling of unearthing a gem. Conversation wasn't easy, and that would be a factor if you want your weekend night to be about catching up with friends, but if you enjoy solid beats, creative riffs, and sweet rhythm, seek this joint out when in the walled old town. The vibes and ambience will draw you in, and the affordable beverage selection will let you soak it all in the whole night. My first stop when next I return to Quebec.

Yelp
Awesome, cheap cocktails (I reccommend the Red Dragon, it has lychee), excellent jazz band, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. An upstairs level if you just want to drink. The downstairs has a cover charge for when there is a band, it was $9 the night we were there. I don't have any specific problem with this place, except the median age of 45. We were looking for something just a wee bit more our speed, that is to say, with dancing and possible people who would mingle with other tables. It was a lot of middle-aged couples and the scene was just a little too sleepy for me. Be this a warning to other twenty-somethings. Also, the band started at 8:30 last Saturday, and we nearly didn't get a seat. Not sure if things have changed since the previous reviewer wrote re: band starting at 10:30, but I'd recommend going earlier than 8:30. The place is clearly open before then as well, as it was full when we arrived at 8:25.

Yelp
Found this gem wandering the streets in Quebec City . Reminiscent of old dive jazz bars . Great place to relax and unwind after a day of wandering the city

Yelp
Fantastic! I can't even find this place on Tripadvisor to review it there with the rest of my stuff. We overheard/eavesdropped on a conversation the night before of people taking about this place, real local, great jazz, old time feeling, etc. Turns out it was right near our hotel (though we may have been the only 2 tourists there on a Friday night). We had heard that the jazz began at 10:30 however that turned out not to be the case. We had just missed a set, but they played anohter prior to 10:30 and then another after taking a short break. We paid a small charge to a guy coming around who worked there (I think it was $5 per person, more than reasonable considering the great jazz and vibe) Too bad we only found this on our last night of our vacation! If we ever do go back to Quebec City, we will def be back here!

Yelp
Great live music. Very cozy and relaxed vibe. Awesome selection of gins. There is a cover charge but well worth it. Reasonably priced drinks.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this bar as we were walking by, the graceful yet potent sounds of jazz invited us in. The eight of us stayed for two rounds of drinks, tucked away in the coziest back booth, while listening to live music... the perfect end to an evening out.

Yelp
Felt like we were stepping back into the 1940's. Super friendly service and great atmosphere. Really enjoyed the music selection and the beer and alcohol selection was great!

Yelp
Don't miss the live jazz on Thursdays to Sunday. The place gets capital P-A-C-K-E-D. It's right next to the HI hostel, which makes me wonder why they don't see more people to this bar. It's literally a stones throw away. Great drinks selection. Good prices for drinks for Quebec city, which means great prices for the rest of Canada.

Yelp
We loved it here! It's a tucked away little bar and it's really old school, it has an awesome vibe, awesome drinks. When they have live music get there early, the seats fill up quick!

Yelp
Hidden away up a side street this bar was a fabulous find thanks to Yelp. Alex the bar tender was great making us very welcome. Bonus jazz band too Really enjoyed our evening here. Would recommend to any body who is looking for a traditional bar with great atmosphere and beverages.

Yelp
Great for live jazz and any cocktail your little heart desires! Beer selection is fine. The cozy vintage decor adds to the charm of this Old Quebec City spot. Definitely check it out while visiting!

Yelp
This place is awesome. Great live jazz and good cocktails in the old part of Quebec City. It's dark and loud and kind of divey and it's a really a great place to watch some talented musicians. Friendly bartender. Worth a visit.

Yelp
Great bar in Old Quebec. Small but comfortable. Great and friendly staff. Drinks are always great (and cheap!) Been here many times and always had a great time!

Kaitlyn D.

Yelp
Great drinks. Great music. Music didn't start until 10:30pm on Friday but worth the wait. Get there early if you want a seat downstairs as it's very tiny and fills up quickly, but there's also an upstairs where you can look down on the band. A gem in Quebec City!

Gail W.

Yelp
Great little pub tucked away on Rue sainte-Angèle. Jazz starts 915 ish on weekend... no pretense just really good jazz and drinks... nice waitstaff and clientele

Yelp
I don't remember leaving this bar, but if the pictures on my phone are any indication I had a rockin' good time. This is a great little bar. They have plenty of local beers at very fair prices, and the bartender treated us great even after I'm sure I was annoyingly drunk. Bar Ste-Angele is a nice alternative to the pricier, more touristy bars on rue St Jean. One helpful hint - if you order Fin du Monde, think twice before getting the "large" bottle...

Yelp
Small, totally genuine bar. Reasonable prices. Friendly bartender. Good music. As far as authentic Quebec City pubs go, Bar Ste-Angele is as good as it gets. This is what a bar should be.

Yelp
Amazing old style bar, very much an great dive. Great selection of beer and whiskey, unbelievably low prices and fantastic service. I wish we had found it earlier on in the trip, we would have made a stop every night!

Yelp
Great unpretentious honest dive jazz bar. Small venue - about 50 seats, no bad seats, great sound. Cheap 5$ drinks. Awesome awesome jazz!!!!! Lots of beer selection, good cocktails and again, much cheaper than most places 'round here!

Drew N.

Yelp
I stopped in here (twice in one night!) on a vacation to Quebec. Michel, the bartender, was extremely friendly, informative, and interesting (and plays good music). They have a great selection of nice beers at really good prices.

Ami D.

Yelp
My husband and I were the first customers here one night, getting there 2.5 hours before the music started. The bartender was very friendly and didn't mind us hanging out. All of the drinks were great and very fairly priced (better than most bars in the states). After my second drink, with both drinks being great, I asked the bartender to surprise me and he made me a "Purple Haze," which wasn't on the menu and he told me not to ask what was in it, but it was also delicious. Once the live music started, the place came alive even more. The jazz was great and just completed the little dark bar. We loved this place and would definitely recommend it.
