This place is an outstanding little haunt on a side street in the Old City.
As we made our way down Rue Sainte Angèle to the mostly-nondescript entryway, the music became audible. As we made our way down the stairs into the dim, small, full, lively subterranean grotto of a space, the music felt crackling. The jazz was alive, the performance was invigorating, and the crowd was paying close attention, as if the bass might gain enough vibration to levitate. The player picked and banged away at it, coaxing appreciative toe-tapping throughout the place.
We were lucky enough to slide into a banquette seat, order a cocktail and a beer, and then focus on the task at hand, which was all about the music. This was one of those places where, as I eased in and took stock, I had that unmistakable, victorious feeling of unearthing a gem. Conversation wasn't easy, and that would be a factor if you want your weekend night to be about catching up with friends, but if you enjoy solid beats, creative riffs, and sweet rhythm, seek this joint out when in the walled old town. The vibes and ambience will draw you in, and the affordable beverage selection will let you soak it all in the whole night.
My first stop when next I return to Quebec.
