Had some after dinner cocktails, we got the Ivy League and Porch Pounder— thought they were okay tasting but the presentation was nice. The music playlist was fun, but clashed a bit with the speak-easy, golden, classic decor but that’s fine. Loved the bar shelf organisation, so visually pleasing. Didn’t order food, but the options were so limited I didn’t have high hopes.

I live in Tucson, and I was looking for a bar with a great vibe, while I was here in SLC. Bar-X did not disappoint! Julie is an amazing bartender, cocktail officianado, and you can tell she loves this place! I told her it reminds me of a place in Tucson called The Shelter, because both bars play old movies on TV screens, and they both have great vibes! Bar-X is also connected to Beer Bar, which has the grill and supports larger groups and has screens for sports. Great pairing! I'll just say "Come to the Bar-X side!" 😎

My husband and I absolutely love coming here! Everyone is friendly, from the staff to fellow customers. And no one is better cocktails and cocktails than the bartenders here. An oasis from the insanity that is our country atm. Just go there, you'll see.

Such a good vibe, nice and dark with old movies on the tvs and music just loud enough. Bartenders are crazy good at handling volume and making the best cocktails in salt lake—without exorbitant pricing. Knowledgeable and capable staff, treat them right and they’ll treat you right.

Stopped in for a quick drink, ended up ordering fries too. Music was on point — a little old school hip-hop. They had Espolon tequila and I could order a drink and not need a seat at the bar… need I say more?

Definitely a great cocktail bar when stopping by in Salt Lake City. Centric and accessible so it was a must for me during a night layover. After reading all the fun comments about this place I immediately rushed there as soon as they opened at 18:00. As a flight attendant, we must take full advantage of our time when visiting cities and often we get to do this things on our own if not accompanied by anyone else from our crew, but going there was the opposite of fun. Music was down, bartender were not chatty and even if going in early, I had a purpose… of enjoying all the things people talked about and have a great cocktail. I started with a gin based cocktail called Moon River. It was great. Well balanced and refreshing (picture #2) Followed by a bar creation under the directions of Roulette as it seemed as the most mysterious item on their menu (picture #1) which was also gin based and had a spectacular flavor that brought memories of eating red grapefruit in the Caribbean. Overall, a good experience with the cocktails, a not so good on the ambiance. Wouldn’t mind going back for a cocktail if I spend the night in the city again.

I hate to share this place since it’s a local gem, but there was a group of racist individuals in there tonight (Super Bowl) disrupting the vibe. The bar (as usual) was a pleasant place, locals gathered, and one guy was disrupting all of it, in a maniacal way, then he and his friends turned completely racist and the police had to be called. The bartender and crew tried to be polite, tell them to calm down, but it escalated quickly and the police had to be called and bouncers from next door, enlisted. The man in question (white guy, grey hair) was out of control, and referred to a bar back as ICE - which was not only racist; but out of hand. Everyone in the bar was enjoying the night, the game, each other, and this guy and his friends were drunk, out of hand, and completely out of line. In Utah, you do not have bouncers and normal back up like other states. People (here) are put in tough situations, especially in a gun state, they have to try and protect and gauge a situation in a moment - it’s not fair - the team didi the best they could to de-escalate but the white-haired man and his NY friends were out of line, unwelcome, and frightening. I’m from the east coast, and they were awful, out of line,, and ruined an otherwise happy occasion. BarX crew - good on you for trying to protect us and keep the Super Bowl tradition alive and positive.

Bartender refused to serve my friends after one of them touched an orange in a bowl on the counter not realizing it wasn’t for the public. Apologized and said they would pay for it but bartender angrily cancelled their drinks and said they needed to “learn their lesson”. Super power trippy. It’s connected to the beer bar next door with opposite vibes, so presumably the same establishment. My group had a very negative experience with the bouncer staff at the beer bar, who were aggressive and escalated a situation instead of handling it calmly and professionally. Will never go here again. Update - Bar managers apologized for my group’s experience which is nice, but doesn’t change how things played out.

Negroni with a twist, absolutely stunning atmosphere! A staff that's more knowledgeable than most. What a fresh breath of air to come to a craft cocktail bar that knows how to not only make a drink but execute them with the must upmost execution. Anyone who gets a beverage here is lucky to truly experience the highest level of craft cocktails in town! Thank you to the whole staff!

Went here for a drink before going to Franklin Avenue for dinner and the ambience was amazing. Speakeasy, moody, grunge vibe but in a proper way. A small cozy place for a drink with a friend and not too rowdy. The bartenders were kind and gave us some surprise drinks. Will be coming back!!

Bar X is a great little bar in the middle of Downtown Salt Lake. The cocktails are delicious and reasonably priced. They have a rotating menu of seasonal cocktails in addition to all of the classics. The only food they offer at the bar itself are fries, which are decent, but are made better by the sauces. I highly recommend the chipotle sauce - it's quite good. Bar X has great vibes. It feels pretty cozy and intimate with limited seating and low lights. The bar counter itself is really nice with lots of seating. The decor is very classic and doesn't feel too fancy or too casual. It's at that sweet spot right in the middle, which I really prefer and makes for a perfect spot to get drinks. If cocktails aren't your thing or if you want a wider food selection or more seating, Bar X is connected to its own Beer Bar next door. The Beer Bar has tons of beer options and a wider food menu. I haven't tried any food here but the fries, but if it's as good as their drinks then I'm sure you'd enjoy whatever you order. Their menu includes cookies, fries, sausages, and burgers to name a few. The Beer Bad has a more laid back vibe than Bar X The lighting is much brighter and the room is much bigger with lots of seating available and sports games projected on the walls. It feels very much like a beer bar, but it feels like a classy one. The service at both locations is great. Bartenders at Bar X and its Beer Bar are all nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. The staff are part of what makes Bar X such a good experience. Overall, Bar X and its Beer Bar are great spots to check out in SLC. I can definitely see myself coming here fairly often.

Great cocktails, chill, moody space. While visiting friends in Salt Lake, my husband and I came here with another couple to get some good cocktails - and that's exactly what we got! We got here around 7:00 PM on a Saturday night and it wasn't too busy. People really started coming in around 8:30, but I'm glad we got there earlier to get a corner seat with a good view of the space. With the dim lights, it has a moody vibe which was cool to see in SLC. Each cocktail was like a work of art. I ordered the Fate of Flowers first - this gin drink was beautiful made and so delicious. For my second cocktail, I got the You're Late - I'm a sucker for a cocktail w/ espresso flavors, so this was right up my alley. Overall, great spot - I'd come back for the cocktails whenever we're in Salt Lake again!

Someone in our party said that this bar was owned by the dad in Modern family, so we decided to check it out. Bar X has solid cocktails, and one option for a "roulette", meaning the bartender asks you some questions and they come up with a drink. I did that and it was fun! I'd stop by again in passing.

Great vibes. One of the servers had a mustache. Bathroom is a lesbian fantasy. Drinks are well priced. Bar tenders are friendly. I wish the house cocktail menu was larger.

I was so glad to be back at one of my favorite bars in SLC. Things haven't changed much other than masks being required unless actively drinking and there are socially distanced tables that are first come first serve. We grabbed one quickly after a group left and a staff member came by to clear their glasses right away. You order your drinks at the bar where the cocktail menu is always changing to keep things fresh and exciting. I went with the Desert Bouquet and loved the combination of reposado tequila and st germaine. I also tried some of the Broadmore and enjoyed the orange bitters in that drink. If you'd like to order food at Beer Bar right next door, simply walk through the red curtain and you'll find yourself right inside. Their fries are my favorite and if you bring your order number back to your table inside Bar X, your food will find its way to you.

Nothing super special about this bar- the drinks were good but not great. I liked the glass the cantarito came in. The suburban dog was a little too heavy on the aperol and bitter.

Omg I just walked in and it smells like cat piss in here! It is so overwhelming geezus no wonder it's dead in here. With great live music I would think it would be more happening but with this stench holy shit. One drink I'm outta here. Blah

service was great. vibes were there. our server was very polite. we ordered the roulette option and he made me and my future wife some great tasting drinks. Garrett asked for our drink preferences and made them perfectly. me and my future wife will definitely be returning.

Loved the back bar . The bartender Eric L was great . Was one of two of my favorite bars we visited while we were in town , based off the back bar alone . And the bartender Eric L recommended the other bar (twilight ) I loved just as much .

TERRIBLE SERVICE. The bartenders are entitled narcissistic asshole chads. Seriously, they double charged me a d my date for our drinks, they were rude when we pointed it out. The. I told them i wasnt TIPPING, i paid for the drinks but sid not tip. THE BARTENDER YELLED AT ME. I was a bartender for 3 years. If im not tipping you because im protesting your service. Never going back there again.

I went to Beer Bar/Bar X Friday night, for the first time in a long time since the pandemic has been a problem. My friends wanted to go and I happened to have a Beer Bar voucher that I could redeem. I'm not a huge fan of Beer Bar / Bar X. The drinks are good but outrageously expensive while the service is rude and the ambiance is lacking. It's like they put up some velvet drapes, turned the lights down low so you can't see the uneven floor, and made some halfway decent cocktails and expect that to be enough to warrant $15 drinks. So I buy the vouchers, because I keep finding myself dragged to these places. I have experienced issues in the past trying to redeem City Weekly vouchers at Beer Bar and Bar X and my difficulty in redeeming vouchers there has been the main reason that I've avoided buying new vouchers during the pandemic, but usually after some persuasion, they accept the voucher. I thought tonight would be no different, that I might have to state my case but that eventually they would accept the voucher. Usually my husband is there to back me up but tonight we thought it unnecessary. We were so wrong. I went over to the Beer Bar side to order drinks and redeem a voucher I had there. When I presented it as payment, the manager (who was drinking heavily with her friends) didn't want to accept it and rather than walk away from the drinks they already poured for me on the bar, I picked one up and started drinking it, which I guess requires 5 guys to kick me out. I made it very clear while I was ordering that I intended to use a City Weekly voucher. It wasn't until the manager got involved that I suddenly found out that I couldn't use them. The weird thing was that she kept going on and on about how bad City Weekly is for business. I don't know why she thought that was information that was appropriate to share with me. The  woman who later introduced herself as Heather sent 5 men to escort me (a petite female) out of the bar. The whole situation was humiliating. My friends tried to defend my honor but it was too late. Heather had made the decision that we were not worthy. She claimed outside that she was going to comp my drinks but I keep thinking, why not do that instead of denying my voucher? She made a clear point that my City Weekly voucher would not be accepted. She told me to take it up with City Weekly and she claimed that City Weekly was somehow harming their business. To make matters worse, a large man with a beard braid tried to physically threaten me. He followed me outside and continued to give me the stare down as I waited for my friends. I was under the impression that this man worked as or was friends with the bouncers. The bouncers didn't notice or care about this. It seemed like he was helping them. No other business has ever given me so much grief about redeeming these vouchers. If you care about supporting businesses that support a diverse clientele and doesn't treat their customers like garbage, I would avoid this business with a ten foot pole. I know these businesses are run by the honorable Ty Burrell but I feel like there must be so much shadiness happening if the employees treat their customers like this. I have since spoken to the head manager at Beer Bar / Bar X, and he repeated all the same things that Heather told me. He claimed that my vouchers were invalid and expired. I double checked all my receipts from City Weekly, none of them came with an expiration date. The terms and conditions on the website do not list expiration dates either. City Weekly does sell vouchers with expiration dates but from my experience, they are always paper vouchers with the expiration date clearly printed on the voucher itself. From my experience, the vouchers in the CWikPay app do not come with expiration dates. I don't know why this manager wasted his breath to speak to me when he obviously felt his employees did the right thing and wasn't going to change his mind. It was like he called me up just to yell at me and make me feel bad. Turns out this entire business is run by bullies and thugs. When I asked about why he had a manager on duty who was drinking, he seemed to be okay with the arrangement. Personally, I cannot think of a supportive work place environment where this kind of arrangement is acceptable. At the very least, managing a crowded bar on a busy night after drinking with your friends is a set up for disaster. At worst, this employee is being asked to work for free and being compensated in alcohol. What a disgrace for a place that on the outside claims to support people who work in the service industry.

Dear Bartender! You were rude, boorish and impolite. You didn't really serve my group, the one star on this review is for my front desk host. Unfortunately he was not allowed to make drinks, your behavior deserve negative points. Don't waste your time at this hole in the wall junk, Plenty options in this area I'd say move on.....

Fantastic whiskey/ rye/ bourbon selections.. Pretty incredible list of reasonably priced high end; hard to finds... Super cool, laid back, and knowledgeable staff. Will return next time I'm in-town. 5/5

I like this place. Music might not be super trendy edm music but this place has great surrounding. People are chill and this place is loud but quite enough to have conversation. This place is the place I come after work for a quick drink and talk. Bartenders are nice and lots of custom drinks are made based on your preference - (you got to know what you u want. You will not get the good Drinks if you don't know your preference. Don't complain the bartender if you said "surprise me" ) Don't put a high expectation. Just come and get a drink with your bestie and have an amazing drink.

Loved loved loved the Redrock oatmeal stout. It was so delicious! The vibe in here is really interesting too. When you walk in the liquor wall behind the bar is way cool. Bartenders are knowledgeable and super friendly too.

I'm happy Bar X is here and without its presence, I would be hard pressed to find a good spot for cocktails while in SLC. I enjoy its moodier ambiance and was happy to see that they have multiple tequila drinks. I tried both the Seaborne Muse and the Desert Bouquet and both are really great but Desert Bouquet is my go-to drink here. Thank you for being open everyday including Sunday!

This past Saturday night we sat at the bar for 15 minutes while the two bartenders gossiped and would not look our way. Then a couple of people came in who they obviously knew and they couldn't wait to serve them, still ignoring us. When we got up to leave and I told them they offered "the worst service ever" and they both looked over at us with smug smiles. Never, ever, ever will we be back. We walked to Johnnie's two doors down and received awesome service and had a great time.

I would have rated it 0 stars but the only reason I rated it 2 was b/ the bar tender was really nice n friendly but the manager tried kicking us out b/ we changed the music to Spanish in the patio keep In mind there was a tablet n no one else in the patio but us they said we couldn't play explicit offended music that's what they called it (Spanish music we weren't even playing anything w/ foul language)there was no explanation he just came n told us u have to go until I stoped n asked he said it was b/ we changed the music he said it wasn't allowed at their bar b/ the owner was strict n didn't like that music so if ur Hispanic n looking for a chill time this is not the bar for u take ur money somewhere

I went to Bar-X on a Friday night with some friends just looking to grab drinks. We actually entered through Beer Bar, but the line for the bar was so long (maybe because you can only order food at Beer Bar?), that we went next door to Bar-X instead. You can go in between the two bars inside. I forgot what cocktail I ordered, but pretty much all the cocktails are $10. I got one that I think had hot sauce in it? Which made it really interesting and tasty. The personally preferred the ambiance of Bar X over Beer Bar, but I think it's cool that they're different. Bar X is darker, but I'm sure I would prefer a little more light if I had ordered food, so Beer Bar is lighter and has more of a...German pub? type of feel to it. None of us ordered food, but it looks pretty good. The bar wasn't too crowded for a Friday night. We were able to order drinks right away at Bar X. I'll definitely come back!

While visiting family in Utah decided to come here for drinks. It is Utah so I already knew the drinks were not going to be as stiff (good) as LA but this place has the character of any great bar around the world. Again if you are not from Utah you may not know what to expect. -First, majority of the bars in Utah you must order food in order to get a alcoholic beverage. Bar X, as I've been told, since they have the word bar in their name they can and do serve just alcoholic drinks -Second, they measure every drop of liquor and it didn't seem as strong as drinks from home. With all that being said they had live jazz band that was effin great, melo ambiance, attentive and kind bartenders. And right next door is Beer bar. Located in the heart of downtown SLC this place is a must to visit. This was my second time coming but not likely my last. I guess the best thing is the drinks not being as stiff allowed me to better take in the beautiful scenery instead of being blissfully plastered. (Trying to optimistic lol)

So I would have given 5 stars - but the service here got off to a shaky start. I sat at the bar and proceeded to go unnoticed for 15 minutes (and the place was not full). I was literally about to bail and find someplace else, but finally approached. From there - things vastly improved; I don't know if my bartender was aware of my long wait - but she did seem to be extra nice for the remainder of my visit. Has a great local feel, and they do some pretty serious and very good quality cocktails. Bar only - no food options. Next time I am in SLC I'll definitely visit again and give them opportunity to earn the 5th star!

Frankly, I'm shocked this place doesn't have a 5 star average. Music on point, bar blacklighting was pleasant to look at. There was the right amount of neon and cusion with a non pretentious city vibe. Most importantly, the cocktail list is well thought out and pretty unique. Prices were so reasonable!! Everything I tried was great. I wanted to bar hop but couldn't bring myself to leave. The last drink I ordered I asked the bartender, Julie, to just make me something. Based on two or three leading questions, she made me the best drink I've had in weeks. I felt like she read my mind. Needless to say the service was devine as well. Just go here. I don't know how it is on the weekends (I don't live here) but Thursday night it's the place to be for real.

Live music on Wednesday night! Delicious vodka martini. So much seating both in bar x, brewery next door, and outdoors - however it was kind of cold and there weren't enough heat lamps. There's a drink for everyone here and the noise level is different in every room.

I went to Bar-X on a Monday night expecting to hear some pretty cool music. But it ended up being a pretty dingy bar that serves terrible Moscow Mules. Their Moscow Mule contained vodka, lime, and soda with ginger. Not ginger beer. It was dim, but not in a romantic, fancy kind of ambiance. It was dim like a dive bar and had a dirty feel to it. The drinks weren't great and neither was the ambiance. It's a pass from me.

Lovely LGBTQ+ friendly establishment. Very good drink selection and a plethora of different sausages to choose from for food options.

I need to preface this review with the fact that I spent 40 years in Wisconsin. The Badger State is known for its drinking culture, and a bar is a meeting place, a social center where folks come to interact, laugh, and share. If you want intimacy, find a table in the back. Don't sit at the bar. The bar is for fun and comraderie. Bar X takes itself too seriously. I recognize mixology can be an art form, but a bar should not be a reverent place. Dark with a speakeasy vibe, Bar X has a large bar and many small "tete a tete" tables to cozy up to. I sat at the bar because I wanted to be gregarious and enjoy a Cheesehead good time. Conversation with the bartender was akin to speaking with an attorney. It was as if each minute was costing money and I better be quick about it. He refused to engage even though he was mixing right in front of me. The NCAA basketball tourney was on, so there was much to converse about. Yet, the other patrons at the bar were more into their drinks than conversation. Bar X ain't Wisconsin, that's for sure! I like a good drink as much as anyone, but I am more into having fun. If I want a private moment with a friend at a place that mixes classic cocktails, Bar X would be perfect. It's a great date spot. However, if I want to enjoy myself and forget about the seriousness of life for a moment, Bar X is the last establishment I would think of. The jukebox is great though.

Super fun atmosphere. Very very strong drinks. Really dark inside so couldn't see the decor too well. Really loud music. Bar staff were helpful

Not much blues or jazz but it is the best live music scene we have found in SLC. Drinks are decent but bartenders couldn't tell me anything about the beers on the menu. Apparently they take the tip with them as well since the bartender never brought me any change, which was intended to be their tip in the first place.

Great signature drinks and great vibe and atmosphere and bartenders are great had the French kiss was a signature drink was so so delicious!!!!

Love bar X. Some of the bar tenders are really creative and you can just tell them a liquor and feeling and they'll whip you up something to match it. Julie did an amazing job tonight making us something to match the summer heat.

The waiters Elise and Stephen were super friendly and helped is picked the perfect drink for our preferences and the food place next door had great gyro fries also definitely worth a visit the music was great also but the time on Yelp is different from the actual time they opened but hey they were nice so I'm ok with it.

There is nothing that Compares to Bar X In Salt lake. This is hands down the best place for craft drinks. The Pimms cup and Mojito are definitely my favorite. The drinks are a bit pricey compared to other places in Salt lake and the place is small but its worth every sip.

4 start quality. If not 5. 3 star speed of service. Granted, all hand made cocktails. But no reason to only have 1 bartender on duty.

I'm from out of town, and when my friends recommended an awesome speakeasy type bar, I was definitely interested. Then we walk up to this place and I seriously thought they playing a prank on me. With the bright neon lights on the exterior, this looked more like a strip club than a speakeasy! With serious suspicion I walked in, and all my doubts were gone. The inside and outside of this place are like night and day (with the day being the tacky neon lights outside, and the inside being the dark, speakeasy environment). The drinks here are fantastic, and the whole place has a great feel about it. Totally down to re-visit next time I'm in town!

Really enjoyed the cocktails here. Bartenders were friendly. The decor could use some work but I overlooked this aspect in light of the drinks and the bartenders. I would recommend the Bustier with rose water and the Golden Eye. Would definitely come back here on my next visit to Salt Lake

Came here after our Valentine's Day Dinner. Wanted to see what kind of bars they have in Salt Lake City. The GF chose this place cause it was near by the restaurant. The parking wasn't too bad. We parked across the street. Door man checked our IDs and we went in and it was dark.. candles were lit. Maybe it was because it was Valentine's Day? Who knows. They had two bartenders working the bar. Glad this place had Hennessy. We sat at the bar instead of getting a table. Bought a couple of drinks.. wanted to leave a little early because we wanted to check out some more bars. This place isn't too shabby. I'd come back again.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I flew into town (first time here) late and just wanted to find a good drink since I heard its strict here. I stumble across this bar on YELP and figured I would check it out since it's the only one that doesn't look like a hole in the wall. William and Davis were behind the bar where I sat. It took me AT LEAST 10 minutes for William to even come over and introduce himself and take my order. David the bartender came over to ask my drink preference. He made a pretty good drink but it was barely over a half cup!!!!! Why did ya jip me! Well I liked the drink and was willing to buy another even though I was slighted. William walked back and forth past me a ton of times, saw my empty glass and never once asked if I wanted anything else. David never came over to ask if I liked the drink he made. It's like I was the black sheep of the bar (literally). Maybe it's how I was dressed (in my fresh off an airplane t shirt and sweats) and they could've thought maybe I didn't have money IDK, NO EXCUSE! It was 1249 when I finally got Tired of not being noticed and started trying to flag down William. He was so busy trying to close the bar shelves that he didn't pay me any mind. When I got his attention it was 1254 I remember precisely because he said "we've only got 6minutes left". But on yelp it said they closed at 2am so I was kinda confused. Fast forward to 1259, as I'm watching William and David both make drinks, William comes to me and says "sorry we don't have anymore time". I said ok man just close me out. After that request he made 3 more drinks!!!!!!!!!!!! And William was over there shaking it up! But you don't have time to make me a drink???? As William approached (without my tab) I said "excuse me" 5 times. I know he heard me because he shook his head. He finally turned around and I asked why he told me there was no more time but drinks were being made. He said those people had been waiting. I said ummmm ME TOO!!!!! This was the worst bar experience of my entire life. If I'm ever so unlucky as having to visit Utah again for work I will certainly not visit this place! The service I received was poor! I should be paid for sitting there dealing with that mess!

If you did not know this was a bar you would think it was a strip club (see flashing BAR X) sign outside. Inside it is warm and cozy and the bartenders are great. It is weird that they have order here signs in designated areas in the bar but also kind of nice to know where to go to get attention for a drink order. It may have been the time, or just the crowd, but I felt like I was drinking with my parents slutty single friends who all try to hit on my friends. I mean, nothing wrong with that if you are into the whole cougar thing, but I am not. Not so cheap, but had pretty cool drinks. If you are into paying an extra penny for a fancy cocktail this is a good spot.

ambiance was great, but the reason for this 2 star rating is because of the beer and the staff. we asked for two budweiser beers because there's barely any options for beers, and after 5 mins of trying to get the 2 bartenders attention (they weren't busy, just talking), we got our beers and they were WARM. definitely not going back.

Seems like one of the most popping bars in SLC. Nothing real special about the place but there's something about it that is just so comfortable and easy for us to always come back.

--X Marks The Spot!-- Came in on a Wednesday not knowing what to expect Great ambience crowd and drink options I had the Kentucky mule served up in a copper mug , great drink good kick! Would recommend to anyone looking for something more classy than your college dive bar bur relaxed enough for a t shirt and jeans.

Definitely more of a high-end cocktail bar compared to most of the bar scene in Salt Lake City. They have a lot of cocktails on the menu that most people have never heard of. Probably most of them are house cocktails, but you can still order pre-much anything else that you can think of. It's strictly wine and cocktails. If you want beer you have to go next-door to the conveniently named "Beer Bar". It's very dark inside and usually gets pretty crowded. The bartenders are great and make great drinks. It's been a while since I've been here, because I don't really drink anymore, but I'll still come from time to time to be social with my friends. I've always enjoyed my time here.

I stopped in on a nice, cold, semi-snowy night with my lady. We pulled up some stools for tasty libations, and that is most certainly what we got. After overhearing a comical interchange between some other patrons and the bartender, Rick flowed over to us, sensing we looked ready to talk turkey. Plenty of outstanding opportunities looked good on the drink menu, and he gave us detailed, more personalized recommendations as we spoke with him. Thoroughly pleasing concoctions came our way for several rounds in a row, including some good backstories on the beverages. We laughed and drank, and back out into that nice, cold, semi-snowy night we departed - completely happy, with a pleasant memory forged. What I loved: the clean and expansive backbar area, the red glow within, the fair prices, and the careful attention to the mixology without tilting toward pomp & circumstance. What I'll love in the future: a return trip that includes some of their live music, some Cold Beer On Tap, probably whatever's recently made its way onto the cocktail list...and possibly weather affording the chance to sit out front to enjoy myself for a spell, as well. And one way or another, I'll get back to Bar-X.

Bar-X is a Utah classic. Many know it because one of its owners is Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. That's pretty cool if you're into the whole celebrity thing. At first glance, Bar-X is super cool! Especially with Beer Bar connected to it. There are a ton of people between these two bars (and at Johnny's) any given weekend night. But after hanging out in Bar-X for another minute, it also kind of just feels like a dark, small dive bar, serving really expensive drinks. Don't get me wrong, I like this place, and years ago this would definitely be a must-visit spot, but there are so many more cool bars in Salt Lake, I'd say to save this one for when you're in the area, or when you're checking out Beer Bar.
