Where to Eat Savory Pies in Chicago

"Instead of hamburgers, Australians eat their meat, vegetable, and bread together in pie form. But they eat them the same way, with their hands and smeared with ketchup. Barangaroos serves the classic mince — beef and sauteed onion — but there’s a long list of other flavors, including chicken tikka masala, Buffalo chicken mac and cheese, and a vegan shepherd’s pie. The West Loop location inside Chicago’s French Market carries a more limited selection." - Ashok Selvam, Naomi Waxman, Eater Staff

A Critic Lauds Cebu Filipino in Wicker Park - Eater Chicago

"Australian meat pies have made their way to Chicago. Mike Sula samples the savory treats from Down Under at Barangaroos in Lakeview. The “uniformly sturdy, pliant, pastry-encased casseroles” come in a number of varieties, such as minced ground beef with melted cheddar that’s “like an Anglo-Saxon Juicy Lucy.” Tikka masala is a “sweet, lightly curried vehicle” while the chicken and mushroom combo “seems to build a sturdy bridge between English sobriety and midwestern blandness.” There are also “deliberately Yank-targeted” pies like buffalo chicken and “Mexican” (steak fajitas, black bean, cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo)." - Jeffy Mai

I HAD to try these meat pies when I walked past this shop, and I'm so glad I did! The crust was perfect and flaky, the filling was savory and flavorful. Keep up the great work!

Google
First time dinner. The pie was amazing. Flaky butter crust, it's almost like a Croissant. I also ordered the spinach soup, expecting a tomato base. But it was green and looked unappealing. Don't let the looks fool you. It's Great. The taste is phenomenal. Try it.

Google
this restaurant is just amazing. I have never tried Australian food before and this is the first time I’m trying from here and it’s just awesome. I took their chicken, curry pies and chicken and mushroom pies. They’re also very professional because they were supposed to send me a packet of chips, which was not available so instead they sent mashed potatoes which was wholesome.

Google
I love any kind of meat pie so when I heard about Aussie Pies, I had to check it out. I bought 3- shepard’s pie, chicken tikka masala and steak & potatoes. The only one available immediately was the shepard’s pie and it was about a 15-30 minutes wait for the others. I was fine with the wait so I decided to eat the shepard’s pie, but turns out it was actually the curried beef & potatoes. I was not a big fan of the curried beef & potatoes, it was kinda spicy & I don’t eat spicy. I did try the chicken tikka masala and that’s very tasty. The crust is so good. I ended getting the other pies frozen. It’s really good if you throw it in the air fryer.

Google
Fast, polite window service for a unique lunch experience. I went here for lunch today and got the shepherd's pie and macaroni. The shepherd's pie was as good as any homemade version with a little bit of spice to it. The crust tastes like it was made just this morning, and was incredibly flaky and delicious. I wish it was a little colder out because this is a DEFINITE must for a chilly day. I think they would do an incredible twice baked macaroni pie but not sure if that's authentic to Aussie cuisine. Also kind of wish they had kangaroo meat.

Google
I got the chicken tika masala and unreal Shepard's. I thought I could finish both pies but it's a lot of food. The chicken tika masala was excellent. The unreal Shepherd's pie does taste like the real thing! Had the Aussie sodas guava is tasty!

Google
These are proper english meat pies almost as good as the ones in London. Although there wasnt any “liquor” (a green parsley sauce) nor any mash; these flakey, buttery and tasty pies were on point. They are also very filling!! Saved much of the pies for another meal. They make the traditional minced meat pie and indian inspired pies (with curry) that is ubiquitos in England and its former colonies. Definitely will be revisiting!!

Google
Fantastic food! I'm always skeptical about pies on general as the crust is often hit or miss - often having a rancid flavor due to iffy oils. But the crust here is amazing. We had the shepherd's pie, the peppered steak and mushroom, and the tikka masala. They were all great. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Fast and good food at a great price. Has some milk-free options. Had a walk-away lunch from the Vic and it was very happy find

Yelp
BARANGAROOS AUSSIE PIES offers mostly Meat-Pies and Hand-Pies These are hard to find in the United States, especially Good Ones. So when coming to BARANGAROOS AUSSIE PIES, why would you want to get anything else? I know. I spent a month in New Zealand with next to no money. Three pies per day kept me alive.

Yelp
Tasty, fast and cost effective. This is a simple food with a variety of possible flavors. I had never tried a savory pie before until checking this out, and it was a pleasant surprise. I tried a Chicken Tikka Masala pie (yes, not a traditional filling but I digress) and it was quite nice. I imagine it would be great with any of their selection. It's just under $10 if you get just the pie, too.

Yelp
Here's my review after I got the order. The milkshake was milk. The food was cold. I hung up after being told there was nothing to be done and you had no idea when it would be picked up. Your employee rudely made it clear I was on my own, but you want to spin it like I was being rude for trying find out what was going on an hour and a half later? I understand busy, but you communicated nothing in that timeframe.

Yelp
Aussie pies were warm and very filling. Meat was plentiful, and the crust was buttery, crispy, and flaky. The steak and cheese pie was juicy and so good, and the mac and cheese had a fun jalapeno twist to it. Shepherd's pie was pretty good, also very juicy and flavorful. Weirdly ketchup-y flavor sometimes though. Cream of spinach soup was too salty for me, but was a very pretty green color. The employees were very nice, and they seemed quite busy- we were the only ones eating in, but it looked like a lot of takeout orders were being prepared behind the counter. Inside is fairly small (a few tables with chairs, as well as counter seating) and has sorta loud EDM/remix music, so interesting vibe.

Yelp
I tried: 1. Steak & Guinness - chopped angus steak, caramelized onions, sliced carrots in homemade sauce. Made with Guinness. 2. Curried Lamb - braised & shredded Australian lamb with potatoes, peas, and special blend of curry spices. Cooked in red wine No complaints about either pies. Super flavorful, meats and pie crust cooked perfectly, and reasonably priced for the portion size. This is amazing Australian comfort food. Staff were nice. It's a small space with a couple of tables. I wouldn't bring a large group here for dine-in.

Yelp
Yummy food. I didn't realize it was make it before food so once they sell out they are out. But everything was yummy and my 2 year old loved their sausage roll. Overall very yummy.

Yelp
I was near the Belmont "L" this afternoon and I thought I'd try the Bararngaroos Aussie Pies. I chose their lunch special which consists of an Aussie Pie, a side, and a can of pop for $13.95. I chose their Classic Mince Pie and Mac & Cheese. I thought the Aussie Pie with Ground Mince Angus Beef was very good with interesting flavors, puffed pastry, and flaky pie crust, the filling was very filling with a side you should have plenty to eat. As far as the food goes, I thought the Mac & Cheese was "too thick" for my taste, I wish they would have loosened it up a little. There is what I would describe as a "Cow Bell" on the front door for lack of a better word. It's very annoying listening to it as people enter and exit. Also, I'd describe the music as "Screaming-singing" it's crazy loud. The lady at the counter was very nice and efficient and will guide you along with your order.

Yelp
Came here since I was nearby, and generally I don't eat meat pies. I got two pies, the Guinness one and chicken tikka masala. The Guinness one tasted great, perfectly balance of salt along with meat and veggies. It was not too sauces and it was thick enough so it kept everything together. The pie itself was buttery and flakey. I'd definitely come back to try more. My fiancé ate the chicken tikka and I did it get to try it, so would try that next time!
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
The pies are great. The shepards pie was loaded. The chicken tiki masala was also filled and saucy. The pastries are always flaky and fluffy. The tomato soup is potent and a little salty but pairs well with the pies. The spinach soup on the other hand is not as salty but tastes like spinach and nothing much else. Is great to drizzle on the pies though.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
Amazing food. I got the classic mince pie (first time trying) and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The cream of spinach soup was also amazing even though it is not visually appealing at all. The cashier asked if I wanted ketchup and I thought it was strange at first, but he explained to me that people like eating their mince pies with ketchup. I'm very glad he asked if I wanted ketchup because the pie was delicious with ketchup!! The prices are very fair. The ambiance is very casual with just a few seats. I only see myself doing carry out here. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I finally made it to Belmont & Sheffield to try Barangaroos! I've never had an Aussie pie before, so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I can say after eating at Barangaroos I can't wait to come back and try some other flavors! I had the steak & Guinness pie, and it was a perfect hand held lunch. The crust was soft and flaky. The filling was full of steak and vegetables, and the gravy had awesome depth of flavor. The staff was very nice and helpful when I was deciding what flavor to get. Next time I'm going to get a few frozen ones to take home and try

Yelp
Having a strong craving for a good pot pie/meat pie this morning, set out to find a good option around town. That brought me to this gem of a place! The pies look a little small in the display case but in actuality it was just an "eyes being larger than stomach" situation. They were just right and piping hot! I had the shepherds pie while the S/O had the vegetarian version and each had a side of tomato soup. I loved mine! It was exactly the correct proportions for a delicious pot pie and the soup was actually AMAZING! It being her first experience with shepherds pie ever was interesting as she was unsure about the texture and taste of them. She agreed that it was pretty good but had nothing to compare it to at the moment. She raved about the tomato soup though and said it was some of the best she had had. I can't wait to try more of their options as I drive past this location almost daily! I will DEFINITELY be back! PS: It's BYOB

Yelp
Meat pies I tried: - curried beef & potato - mango bbq pork - classic mince All were good, but my favorite was the curried beef. Least favorite was the mince. The lamingtons were great although I wish they came in smaller quantities.

Yelp
This spot was located near our hotel. Popped in after seeing good reviews on Yelp. It also caught my eye since I've never had Australian dishes. The steak and potato pie was delicious. Very hot! They warned me in advance. Great flavor and perfect size. The tomato basil soup was the best! Definitely will come back on my next visit to Chicago to try more flavors of pies and of course to grab a soup again.

Yelp
I ordered through Uber eats. My food arrived on time and still warm. I ordered shepherds pie, mince pie, Mac and cheese and the chocolate pastry. Mac and Cheese.. can you please teach everyone else how to make make and cheese with flavor? Your mac and cheese is delicious, great job. No notes. It was delicious and had a great spice, Shepherds Pie.,I'm not gonna lie, I was like wait..there's a crust on top? I dunno how I feel about this..and you know how I feel about it!? GREAT. I feel awesome about it because carbs are delicious and you should enjoy your life. It was everything I never knew I always wanted.. Mince pie..how am I this old and had no idea wtf mince was and that it was tasty? Honestly? Took a bite..said..oh you're a delicious little bugger aren't you? And put in the freezer because I was having a wonderful happy moment with my shepherds pie and no one else need be invited. The chocolate pastry..ok..listen..was it delicious? Duh. It's chocolate wrapped in pastry. Buttt...I could've used a bit more of something..I don't know it was just too basic. The dough a bit tasteless and uneven for my chocolate to pastry ratio which obviously should be a healthy amount of chocolate but like Keith Lee says.."this is for me personally.." in my own words..give me dad bod pastry. Make it look like they are a great cuddler. I'd still give it a 8.5/10. Also..bonus was the free mango lemonade I got because of a promo on Uber eats and it was delicious too. Now that I know this location will be close to my new job..I'm stoked because this place is great. Well done friends..I'm excited to try more stuff from you..and yes, we are friends now because how could we not be after you fed my soul with that food.

Yelp
Great option if you're in the mood for some traditional Aussie pies. It was about the only place in the city I could find that offered them, and I love that they had a vegetarian option as well!
google avatar

Yelp
We tried the Shepard's pie and the classic minced pie and they were absolutely amazing. $24 for two people and my husband and I split the side of Mac N Cheese. Super filling and a awesome price. They have frozen take home options that we bought too and those were great also. I definitely will be returning.

j a.

Yelp
Very nice flaky crust, great flavor and decent size. I regret I only bought two. I had the peppered steak and mushroom pie and the chicken tikka pie. I liked the chicken tikka pie a lot more. Very reasonably priced. Peppered steak was good but I may not buy it again. The chicken tikka I would definitely buy again. Next I will try the other flavors too.

Yelp
I've been to Australia multiple times and always get pies while I'm there. This spot is far better than any pie I've eaten in Australia. Service was very friendly too. I got the shepherds pie and a steak n Guinness pie with a side of mac & cheese. So freakin' delicious and the pies are a really good size. I'd definitely eat here any time I come through Chicago in the future. HIGHLY recommend!

Yelp
I've never been a big meat pie guy (or so I thought), so while I was curious to try whatever the hell constituted an "Aussie pie," my hopes weren't particularly high, especially given the affordable prices. This place ROCKS. I genuinely haven't tasted a single pie that wasn't great, and I've had most of them. Even the "basic" pie is delicious (honestly one of my faves), and the chicken and sausage meat rolls are also great. I've had: Classic Mince, Curried Beef & Potatoes, Beef Onion & Cheese (tastes kinda like cheesteak), Steak & Guinness, Chicken Tikka Masala and the Steak and Potato, and I can recommend them all. The beef options are probably my favorite, but I was pretty impressed by how legit the tikka masala and curried beef tasted, because I figured that'd be a weak spot. The pies themselves look great and have a nice flaky taste to them, and they are SOLID, so don't worry about the size. Word of advice: Poke/cut/make a hole in the pie if you're trying one for the first time, because they are *real* hot when you get 'em, and they hold that heat well. Anyway, the tl;dr is that this place came out of nowhere to be one of my weekend mainstays, and based on some of the other reviews I see, it looks like I'm not the only one. P.S. - Whoever writes on the wrappers has amazing penmanship, and I'm really jealous.

Loren S.

Yelp
All I've got to say is that Shepherd's pie was delicious! Ordered it online and the crust was perfect and flakey with a rich savory filling. Surprisingly edible with just your hands (very doable). Can't wait to cook my frozen Steak and Guinness pie!
google avatar

Alana S.

Yelp
Man, I love this place. It's authentic, it's fairly priced, the people are SO nice (seriously, both the woman and the very tall man are extremely patient), and it's delicious. If you become a member, you get a free pie after you rack up a certain amount of points, so that's awesome. Have tried them all, and my favorites are: - beef, cheese and onion - chicken and mushroom - shepherd's But honestly you can't go wrong. The chicken tikka and the beef stew are also excellent All my vegetarian friends LOVE the "unreal" shepherds pie as well. Go there!

Yelp
This is more of a 3.5-star review. We were there around 1:00pm on a weekend, and they were out of a lot of pies. There was one customer in line when we arrived. The pie display was looking really sad and almost empty. I really wanted to try the Shepherd's pie, but they were out. The cashier's demeanor didn't seem welcoming or friendly. For a few of the pies that we asked about, the response was that they're out and that's it (none of that "we're making more but you'll have to wait X amount of time). Also, I'm not sure what was going on in the back, but they dropped a tray at least twice on the floor that caused a really loud bang while we were there. ENTREES - Steak & Potato pie ($7.95): We really liked this pie. The steak was tender, savory, and the highlight of the pie. The pie has a savory brown steak sauce that tasted great. I would order this one again. - Chicken Tikka Masala pie ($6.95): It has chicken in a creamy Indian-inspired tomato-based sauce. However, the chicken tasted a bit on the dry side. The flavor wasn't as good as the steak and potato one. I was still hungry after eating one pie, so you really need two if you're starving.
google avatar

Lee W.

Yelp
Good, but not great. In preparation for an upcoming trip down under, it felt like the right time to try an Americanized version of this Aussie classic. The Chicken Tikka Masala could have used some seasoning. I supplemented with some hot sauce and that did the trick. My husband had the classic mince, it was also lacking seasoning. So in Aussie fashion he added ketchup, problem solved. The mince was maybe a little too rosemary, otherwise can't fault it. The best part, both pies had an amazing crust, flaky with the right amount of crisp. All told a decent place. On a cold afternoon a hot pie really hit the spot.
google avatar

Marlie B.

Yelp
Gurrrl, you haven't lived until you've had a sausage roll from this place. Comfort food on steroids! If you're feeling naughty and want to indulge on something that you might feel some guilt about. This place is it. Insanely yummy food.
google avatar

Q C.

Yelp
Excellent pies. I've lived in Australia and these pies are legit. Had the chicken tikka, beef curry and shepherd pies. All very tasty. Lamingtons were also a treat.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Pretty cool and unique place! It's a quick counter order place! We ordered the classic (minced onions and ground beef) and the Guinness (steak, carrots, and onions). Each pie had a really delicious filling and a flakey crust that melts in your mouth! The chef/owner was really friendly and helpful because we didn't really know which one to choose! The place is conveniently right near the Belmont redline. There are paid for parking nearby if you plan on driving, but on the weekends it may be hard to find decent parking without driving around a few times.
google avatar

Mira K.

Yelp
The crust on these pies...OMG. I remarked upon eating them that I thought it was some of the best pie crust I'd ever had. We picked up the pies straight from the oven and ordered three: mango pork, shepherd's pie, and steak and cheese. On first bites, the mango pork was my favorite. It had a nice, lingering heat. But on eating leftovers, the steak and cheese pulled ahead. The agreed upon third place finisher went to the shepherd's pie which lacked any flavor. We also ordered lamingtons, which were moist and deliciously coconut-y. This is the only place in the city we could find that sell them. The three pies were enough for two of us and we had leftovers for another full meal. You can order directly from the restaurant and don't go through delivery apps. Saves so much $$$!

Yelp
While it took me awhile to get the pronunciation correct, it didn't take me (or the many friends I've brought here) very long to fall in love with the novel cuisine offered at Barangaroos. The crust is excellent; providing a light and flaky exterior devoid of any bitterness; the gravy inside is each is unique, rich with flavor; and it's perfectly proportioned. I rarely see anyone dine-in at their venue, which has mostly been blocked off since the pandemic but the interior is modern and clean with a showcase of recently made pies (most awaiting pickup). The staff takes care to instruct you on how to eat the pie and warns you when it's safe to eat if it's fresh out of the oven. They also have a nice rewards program on their website. I'll rate the pies in order - starting with our 5 star options, Curried beef and potatoes is my personal favorite given that I'm a fan of Indian spices and it's rich, savory meal. Mango pork was my wife's favorite given its tangy, tender profile and BBQ-based gravy but it was recently overtaken by the Steak, Pepper, and Cheese pie. You can't go wrong with the four star options: Braised Beef stew, Steak and Guinness, and Classic Mince. I personally love Shepherd's Pie, Chicken tikka, - but as Aussie pies - they're 3.5 star territory, perhaps needing a little modification with respect to their sauce. I haven't had the Unreal Shepherd's Pie because I don't want any vegans to starve but I recently noticed the Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese - so I'll need to give that a look. I have tried their Lamington desserts, cakes covered in coconut flakes, which were ok - but I'm a bit more curious about their milkshakes. One of these days, when I decide my waistline is safe from any near-term risk of beer gut, I'll go give their Pumpkin Spice Coffee milkshake a try because I'm basic like that. Anyway, great food, great staff - I hope they're in business for a long time.

Yelp
I was completely stoked when I saw this had opened up next to Trader Todd's. As someone who is obsessed with watching/reading Fantasy, I am constantly craving meat pies and even went on a hunt for British bangers to no avail (superfluous information, but my cravings for meat pie are well ingrained). Myself and a friend went in Wednesday's around 4/4:30 - I had already read that pies might be in short supply so we were determined to pick from whatever selection was available. Luckily, when we arrived there were at least a good dozen pies available, and a choice between about six or seven different flavors. We ordered and paid at the counter and the woman told us she'd warm the pies and bring them over to us. We gathered napkins and utensils from a stand with complimentary water, and waited maybe 5 minutes while the pies warmed. We split a Steak and Potato pie and a Chicken Tikka Pie and were floored. Both had great flavors, the crust was thin enough not to overwhelm the fillings, and we felt content at the end of the meal. Chicken Tikka was the favorite - well spiced, wonderful texture - but the Steak and Potato is not to be overlooked. I'm excited to try the other offerings. I often worry about upset stomach after eating meats that were cooked, cooled and set up in a case, and warmed up to order (lookin' at you, empanadas) and had absolutely no stomach rumblings or cramps. Clearly much love and thought goes into these little pies. The person working wasn't the most chatty but it didn't take away from our experience. We sat at the window, she brought us our pies, and we jabbered away while we ate. I plan on being able to swing by to pick up some pies and head over to a bar to drink some beers with it (because pies and booze are the staple of Fantasy) or take some home and do the same. But really - if you like savory pies or empanadas or similar foods this should notnescape your radar. Adds a unique eat to the neighborhood - and honestly, you've had Cheesie's and Blaze a hundred times so check this place out instead.

Yelp
Love this new addition to the hood. It was perfect for a quick satisfying lunch esp. since it was still a bit chilly outside. They were out of the shepherd's pie and more wouldn't be ready for another 40 minutes, so we had the chicken tikka, classic mince, mac n' cheese, and cream of spinach soup. That soup was superb. The mac n' cheese was solid. The pie fillings were tasty. The pie itself was perfect in texture and flavor. I also loved the size of the pies, as it is just right. And definitely, do just bite into as it is nicely handheld. Prices are fair. The space itself is cute. The staff was nice, though I would have liked a bit more enthusiasm or conversation especially since we were new to the place.

Yelp
With delivery we spent more than $40 on three meat pies that were tiny, bland, and way more bread than filling. We ordered the shepherds pie, chicken masala, and steak and Guinness. They pretty much tasted the same. Bland with barely a noticeable flavor. The ingredients don't stand out. They were all about as bland and dull as a generic grocery store pot pie. Actually, that at least has some salt in it. Plus, the pies are tiny for the price. I lived in the UK for a long time and know these kind of meat pies from there. They are meant to be full of flavor with delicious meat and vegetables. These pies taste like they were made a long time ago and frozen. I feel completely ripped off.

Yelp
Tasty pies! Great lunch option or even snack option between meals. It's close to the Belmont station (on Sheffield) and easy to grab a pie on the go. The owners were nice and gave us tips on how to eat them (they mentioned aussies love ketchup and for the mince pie to eat it with ketchup). We got the mince, the shepherds pie, steak and potato, Buffalo chicken, and the tiki masala. We enjoyed them all, if you are really hungry or eating for dinner, get two, otherwise one will be fine for lunch or a snack. I wish the tiki masala had a little more kick to it but that's just a small thing. All were tasty and all had great portions of meat inside too. They don't skimp! Worth a try!

Yelp
So top o' the day, to ya. We sawr this place walking around the 'ol Belmont-Sheffield area-r. Crikey! I exclaimed to my mate. We were a bit knackered, after all. I tend to approve of anything in a pie crust, so in we went. I reckon we ordered the regular joe pie and another one with mushrooms and cheese, mate. I also got the Cream a spinach soup. The pies were ace. The soup was top tier, too, I tell ya. Av a go, you should. Better than gettin all arc' d up from knackerin. Defo better'n a furphy from a mongrel.

Yelp
Have been a couple of times. Pies are good and can be taken home frozen. They have deals not advertised for volume so worth asking. They did tel me when I hit the threshold though. Second time they bought out the food curbside which was convenient.

Yelp
Devoured my first pepper steak pie in seconds, worthy of an olympic medal. It was so good, I went back and tried the chicken curry pie and easily smashed the previous record time

Yelp
Got take out for a picnic, it was perfect and a great reminder of the savory pies I grew up eating in the UK. Our order delivered to us exactly on time as promised when ordered directly from Barangaroos' site. Favorites were the chicken tikka masala, classic mince and meatless Shepard's pie. Certainly going to make this a go to spot.

Yelp
We got the Thanksgiving Dinner pie. Really tasty. Crispy, flaky, buttery crust. As a plus a small cup of cranberry sauce was included. Nice touch. Will definitely come back to try something else.

Yelp
My friend had been raving about coming here and I'm so glad I did. I got the Classic Mince meal with a side of Spinach soup. Both were delicious and the pastry was so good! I'm so glad I finally came and I will be a frequent customer!

Alisa A.

Yelp
We ordered here the day before thanksgiving for the sheer purpose of getting their frozen seasonal thanksgiving pies to get us through the winter. The thanksgiving pie is hands down the best thing on the menu, I so wish they had it all year round. For lunch we ordered: Two sausage rolls (an addiction to which may be on the horizon) Thanksgiving pie to share (we really love turkey, don't judge us) Frozen: 6 thanksgiving pies Unfortunately they were out of sausage rolls They called and informed me; no big deal, I chose a Shepard's pie and thought nothing of it aside from my slight sadness at lack of sausage roll. The order arrived in short order with this delightful little note. I appreciated the effort for something that I didn't even realize. If you can, try the Thanksgiving pie and then join me in my campaign to have it be a standard menu item.

Yelp
Nice addition to Chicago - limited vegetarian options (just one I believe), no gluten-free options, but my husband rated his chicken pie a 7/10 , comparing them to the ones we had in Australia.

Yelp
I'll share a little anecdote with y'all. I posted photos to IG about their pies recently. My cousin commented "Baaaarrrrrraaaanngg me some pies!" Funny yeah? I thought it was a riot. (If you're a Dad, go ahead and steal that joke. It's kid tested too.) I AM NOT part of the Australian community. However, I am a part of the community of people that love the f*ck out of pot pies, hand pies, stuffed dough, pockets, empanadas, stuffed crust shells, pasties & Brit/Cornish pasties. And anything kin to them. For the taste of a good savory pie, I'll travel out of my way for them. Before my first visit I went through reviews so I was prepared. The most notable detail is bake time/ selections which aren't always available. So if you have particular interest in a certain flavor of pie it would be wise to call ahead. Bake time takes an hour and as Americans we haven't the patience to wait.. Phone first. I was picking up pies for a birthday shindig so I called ahead and made a future order. A few needed to be baked and I had more than 90 minutes to spare before pickup. Back at the party, we decided to divvy them up into quarters for sharing. Everyone was thrilled with most flavors. Some are definite favorites while others are colossal stomach (space) wasters. Personally not a fan of the veg pizza. The sauce tastes like Ragu to me, blech. Other favs; chicken tikka masala, buffalo chicken, chicken and mushroom.. okay, I'll stop. The steak and potato pie is so mf'ing good and my favvvvvvvorite (even though I've been trying to stay off beef since the new year). There is some sort or hint of what I think is A1 in the gravy. It's tasty! It's best to have these pies when they are piping hot. There is so much to enjoy from the flavors and the mixture of sauce, meat and crust. It just hits the mark. I remember walking out of there with a hot pie on a rainy evening. I took one bite and then sank into the driver's seat of my whip. Instant comfort.. About the venue. It's not much. A counter, a couple helpers and what I imagine are "easy bake ovens" pumping out pies when necessary. The space is Ikea (economy) comfortable. I feel as though the storefront is an unnecessary amount of space. You gotta remember, this is Lakeview and I imagine rent is high. That means they gotta pump out their delicious pies often and I would like to continue buying them because I digz it. I feel as though a walk up counter and shared dining space would be a better idea for them. Also, I have to wonder why they aren't selling pies to the bar or train crowd. They close at 9pm..?! If they had a push cart, guy with a bag (ie tamale guy), etc selling pies on the street.. I am sure people would buy these. I certainly would. Last, something I've wondered is why they don't offer frozen pies for sale. For those of us not having an hour to play with, I would gladly buy a few and bake myself. It would make supporting them easier. Get'em while you can and always piping hot!

Yelp
I finally was able to try this Hot & New place right on the corner of Sheffield & Belmont! I went in for lunch and had the Chicken Tikka Pie & then got a Mexican pie to go. The pies are awesome because your able to eat the whole thing no silver trays. The owner Arjun was very nice and gave me a quick background on the restaurant and how it came to be. I highly recommend stopping by and getting some pies. The pie I took and ate the next day was very good as well.

Yelp
This review is due to the experience or the non experience that we had on the evening of Tuesday, February 12 at around 6:10 in the evening. We were so excited to try Barangaroos, but were sadly let down quickly after entering. When we got there, they only had approximately 6 pies in total in the case, and we were informed by the lady behind the counter that this was all that they had for the rest of the evening. Really?!?! 6:10 in the evening, prime dinner time, in a prime location, where people can get grub on the way home, and you don't have all your selections available, and you have no plans of making anymore? In my opinion, this is not a good business model. Additionally, the lady behind the counter, although not rude by any means, was not apologetic in any way, and did not have the sense of urgency to assist at all, when we decided to leave, she just shrugged her shoulders, with an OK. Thankfully, there are other options in the area and we were able to enjoy the rest of the evening. For the owner/operator of this establishment, please take this as constructive criticism. I am not out to ruin your business, in fact, I want your business to succeed. We would love to visit your establishment and have the opportunity to enjoy something different that Chicago needs, but I am afraid that if the experience we had is the norm, then I am not sure how successful your operation will be.

Yelp
Classic Mince Pie & Chicken Tikka Marsala Pie Pros: - new and different type of food to the area - VERY filling - tasty - Chicken Tikka Marsala isn't too spicy tho - affordable - quick and can eat on the run Cons: - they run out of inventory throughout the day - not open late on weekends... still have to go to Cheesie's for late night food They NEED to find a way to be able to have pies ready to go at all times, so people don't leave and go somewhere else nearby for their meal. I really want to see this place succeed because the food is honestly really good. I would love to see them do a pie of the month, or grow their menu someday.

Yelp
I have driven by Barangaroos Aussie Pies many times without stopping. But today, it was lunchtime and I decided to pull over and go in. What a great decision it was!!! I just had my first Aussie Pie for lunch minutes ago and it was FANTASTIC!! I had the Steak and Guinness Pie. The crust was so flaky and held the meat and veggies perfectly. The meat was flavorful and perfectly seasoned, and I never noticed that the Guinness was in it!! I also got two steak and potato pie for my wife and I to have for dinner, along with a shepherds Pie for a lunch later this week. And, I picked up a side of their Mac and Cheese which was surprisingly as good or better than I have had at some of the bigger, "fancier" restaurants around Chicagoland. For me, I definitely give Barangaroos Aussie Pies Five Stars!!!

Yelp
So happy this location has a new home with Aussie pies!!! Leave it to some dimwit, however, to write a one star review on the 3rd day of business (followed by the ever clever - but I really wish you the best). Don't worry, Aussie friends. The rest of us know it takes some time to get into the swing of things. The shop smells amazing. The shop looks adorable. The shop is going to do brilliantly. My only request. Add a vegetarian option. Vegan if at all possible. Just one. Thanks.

Yelp
I used to live in AUS and NZ. I'd get my daily pie from the local bakery and enjoy my lunch outside. Once I got here, I missed good individual meat pies. The ones I found just weren't right. Barangaroos gets it mostly right! They are still a new business, so they don't have all the pie flavors I love - and might cater to a more "American" palate - but the employees said that they would start expanding the menu soon, with different flavors of the month, etc. I am hoping that my beloved Potato Top, Beef and Cheese, and Spicy Veggie pies will make appearances! They sell Bundaberg fizzy drinks! They sell Tim Tams and Australian liquorice (if liquorice is your thing)! It's a nice little shop (emphasis on little - do NOT expect seating for a big group), nice people working there, and a small but flavorful pie menu. My favorite is the Steak and Potato. I honestly thought it had stout or ale; the employees said it didn't have anything like that, but steak and ale is another flavor they might offer in the future. I'm looking forward to it. I hope they stick around!
