The best part of this hotel is its storied history and prime location in the old downtown section of Juneau. Preserved well and remodelled only once or twice since 1929, the property feels old because it is. WiFi works, but our double-bed (!) room was too small to offer anything but a narrow work desk and 40" TV. The staff (most of them seasonal workers from Bulgaria) we're are more or less helpful, with a good command of English. All in all, our four days and three nights at the Baranof were enjoyable, and the hotel itself a pleasant departure from chain hotel monotony.

We stayed twos night prior to cruise and one after. Pros: Central location, cordial desk staff, rooms facing back were quiet, coffee always available in lounge. Cons: Each room had unpleasant mechanical issues. First nights: VERY small room 4th floor, overheated, no in-unit HVAC control. Power toilet required 2-4 pulls of handle to flush. Tub drained so slowly, by shower end standing in 2 inches of water. After cruise night: Spacious room w sofa, nook for table and 4 chairs, fridge and chest, 9th floor. Table top so wobbly we thought it might come off. Old-style toilet used so much water, not clear would fully flush waste. Wrong size faucet for sink, missing aerator so spit water. Soft bed, with HUGE lumpy king pillows. Overheated, no in-room control. All nights we slept w windows open. Other cruise passengers related similar issues. Those in street side rooms experienced lot of noise. There was confusion regarding the cost of the room. Be sure to get a confirmation. Cannot recommend.

The hotel was in a good location however it was long overdue for a renovation. The lobby was dark and dismal. No WiFi inflow was given to us. Had to ask later for that. First room received was terribly outdated in the back of the hotel and way overpriced for its condition. Second room was a better and larger room but had numerous minor maintenance issues (wallpaper, toilet handle, window lock, sink faucet). Free lobby coffee service was nice to have though.

Such a great location and potential, but very disappointing. I only stayed one night, and that’s probably a good thing. I’ll start with the heater in the room. It was turned all the way up, and even when I turned it all the way down, it kept heating the whole suite like a sauna. I needed to open all the windows all the way and call the lobby at 1 a.m. so they would bring me a fan. And no, I’m not sensitive to heat; it was just TOO MUCH. Another alarming thing is that no one cleaned the bathroom and shower after the last person. The toilet had leftovers, and the previous guest's soap bar was still in the shower. Other than that, very comfortable bed and pillows, and a GREAT BARTENDER at the bar, I believe her name is Mira.

Google
no service. Just awful. the hotel is fine but the staff is lazy. You must ask for breakfast vouchers. The service in the bar is virtually non-existent. Only one elevator for nine floors so I walked up the stairs. Once I made them give me breakfast vouchers breakfast was good, so this is just bad service.

Very disappointed w/Baranof Downtown Juneau. Definitely an ancient, dilapidated building that needs to be knocked down & rebuilt. Nice of them to upgrade my room, but it still had numerous problems—smoke alarm went off 2X, it became super stuffy and hot once, the toilet leaked once. And now, the guest laundry room door won’t close! I wish they had told the truth and stuck w/it about the hotel airport shuttle.

Google
This hotel was the crappiest hotel we stayed at during 5 1/2 weeks touring Alaska. Outdated, tired, hotel staff who don't care.|Our bathroom sink was plugged. Sorry maintenance not here until morning.|No hot water in shower and pathetic water flow. Sorry maintenance not here yet. Manager not here yet either. At $450/night I expected better. We had better service and a hot shower at a truckstop in Coldfoot.|Don't stay here

A great way to close out my Alaskan cruise. I really appreciate the front desk. I forgot a bag in my room. The front desk staff called a cab and brought the bag to me at the Juneau airport in plenty of time before my flight! Service above and beyond...thanks!

Yelp
We stayed for 6 nights and had a very comfortable stay. The building/rooms are old, but honestly that's pretty standard around Juneau. Most importantly, the room is clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and we loved the coffee bar available all day. There is also ample parking. If you're a light sleeper, this is not the hotel for you. Walls are thin and you can hear doors opening and closing. Unfortunately, I could hear the guest next door violently vomiting while I was in the shower. While I hope he was okay, it was pretty unsettling.

Yelp
I stayed for four nights in early May 2023. I was pleasantly surprised. These are a few other things that I really liked. * free parking directly behind the hotel * housekeeping service every day * fantastic Central location * ultra friendly and helpful staff * upgrade to a decent size one bedroom King suite * fast, free Wi-Fi These are the things that I didn't like so much. * room was stuffy at night, even with the windows open * no drain plug in the bathtub. Had to improvise with a bottle cap.

Yelp
Update. I contacted corporate headquarters and was promised a response. Didn't get one. Caveat emptor.

Yelp
Pretty decent hotel in a nice location walking distance to the shops, breweries, and docks. There was only a box fan and no air conditioning so it was difficult to sleep even with the windows open, made easier only because the bed was extremely comfortable. The tub was clean and a massage shower head was the newest thing in the bathroom. There was ample space but not enough bright lights in the room to use the mirror outside of the bathroom. We had breakfast in the restaurant and some patrons had buffet card credits but we didn't and just bought entrees. I highly recommend the French toast covered in cinnamon and honey butter... It's like a cinnamon bun. They also have a luggage room to help if you need to checkout before your cruise or flight.

Yelp
Many issues that could be easily remedied with good management. Nice old building with a decent vibe. Fits Alaska. But that being said, at $240 and up per room I expect a lot more. Firstly, no blinds in the room. When the sun comes up, YOU'RE UP too. No blinds? How cheap a place is this? Coffee maker dirty. Shower door won't shut, water on floor. Then... My company calls and says, "We're picking you up at 4pm instead of noon. I ask for late checkout and some night manager with horrible bedside manner, "No we don't do that." When I asked why he mumbled something and said "We don't give late checkouts." I even asked to pay for a half day rate, "No we don't do that." That's it. He made no effort whatsoever to accommodate me. It's the hospitality business... that's his only job. This is how it should have been handled, "We're sorry Mr. Dowler, we are pretty booked so we can't really extend your check out. BUT, we can make you really comfortable in our lobby, bring you coffee or water and you're welcome to make yourself at home till your pickup." That little effort would have made me a happy customer, but I felt like the guy had no personality at all and was probably an ex-cop or marine, which is fine if you work for the police or the marines. But not in a hotel. Bed was comfortable. TV worked ok. Had hot water. I'd put this place on the level of a motel 6 because of the service. But they had nicer towels and pillows. Breakfast buffet was AVERAGE at best. At $20 it should be better presented, more options and wait staff could use some training. Very slow and forgetful. I mean it's a serve yourself buffet. How hard is refilling coffee and water? Way overpriced. The shame is, it wouldn't take that much effort to make it a good experience. It just seems like this night manager doesn't care. He's just there burning hours to make some cash. My company books hundreds of rooms annually. You think they'd try harder to keep our business.

Yelp
I stayed here for a week in June 2023. You couldn't ask for a better location. It's old and that is part of the charm. It's clean, so that's the important thing. Yes, there is no AC, but that is normal for Alaska and there was a fan in my room. FYI, the Marriott doesn't have AC either. Great breakfast downstairs in the morning. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
We called a few days out from our reservation and asked if they had rollaway cribs were told no. So we trekked a pak n play from atlanta for our twins. We arrive, the room we are assigned has a narrow entry with a closet and a full size bed. My reservation was for a king. And guess what they have a crib. The updates are noticeable in the since they patched with wall paper. No AC, which was expected but with only one of the two windows able to open, air flow was a challenge. Our room was not serviced. Not once, I had to grab a roll from the cart. And we did not post a sign. I have babies, which means I have daily trash. Breakfast, don't get tricked like my fiancé. It'll run you $18 when there are so many other great options for breakfast. Glad he went solo and we only paid once for dried out eggs, some delicious sausage and a banana. Positive, far enough from the bar scene to be quiet, but close enough that you can walk. It's on a rise, so most rooms probably have a decent view, even if it may have some old buildings it. Location, location, location for this place is the biggest up side. And pretty delicious shower gel. Kind at the desk because we kept forgetting our keys. Roaming Juneau with twins means a lot more on your checklist. I know this is a port town but my room was on par with a cruise ship in size. So, if you find yourself in 323, I hope you like your travel companion.

Cathy ..

Yelp
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Hotel is located within walking distance to the cruise ship dock. Highly recommend

Yelp
I stayed at the Baranof for 7 nights in June. I will not complain about the price because I paid in advance and knew ahead of time what I'd be shelling out. I picked this hotel because of its location--and the other hotels in Juneau didn't look appealing. The room was clean. I was disappointed it lacked blackout curtains; when I called ahead of my stay, I was told all rooms had them. There isn't much darkness in Juneau around summer solstice, and falling asleep was difficult. The only meal I ate at the hotel was breakfast, once. Overpriced. $24 bucks, iirc, for cold Buffett food. Good things: Walking distance to pretty much everything in downtown Juneau. Cooler with reasonably priced sandwiches and drinks for when the town shuts down. Staff was friendly and courteous. Overall ok, but nothing to brag about.

Yelp
It's not dumpy but it's nothing special. It's dated in the way most hotels in Alaska are. It is in a great location particularly if you don't have a car. It's an easy walking distance to everything downtown and the Tram where all excursions seem to meet whether or not there are Cruise Ships in port. The service is so so. Took three requests to get an extra pillow. But rooms are being made up if you put the door hanger out. This for instance seems to be a "not happening" service at many other hotels related to COVID. There is no A/C let alone a thermostat in the room. Just a knob to turn heat up or down and a cheap plastic fan on the desk. The window in our room opened but overlooked a dirty parking ramp... the lock on the window was broken. There also seemed to be a lot of door slamming at all hours of the night. Strange since the room doors themselves seem to be soft-close doors. All of this said, you don't go to Juneau to hang out in your room or hotel. This said... boy howdy for $319/night I was hoping for better than a shoulder shrug so so.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! I only had calamari for food which was excellent. The cocktails were amazing . I had a martini , margarita and an old fashion. All would compete with best cocktails in big cities. Will, the master mixologist, is amazing! Highly recommend

Yelp
'BW Signature'?? I think not.. Ok, I understand this is an old hotel just getting back up to speed after the pandemic closures, but there is simply no excuse for the many issues we experienced during our one night stay. Door lock on first room did not work. Told to 'play with the handle'.. not acceptable, asked for a different room. Second room: shower completely inoperable. Moved to third room. No A/C, so must open window, but in doing so must tolerate noisy machinery outside of window. Drain in sink would not drain, and hot water was never very hot but we weren't about to change rooms again, so we tolerated it for the one night. TV was a pain in the A to use. No adjustments to rate offered for the inconvenience(s). No microwave or fridge, which I would expect from any BW, but especially for one in it's "Signature" collection, and at these prices. Breakfast? One of the reasons we always choose BW's is for the ample free breakfast, but here it will cost you an extra $18.95 per person. Lobby coffee? Undrinkable. BY THE WAY, in response to my review on Tripadvisor, General Manager Aimon I stated "The room type you booked is a very small with little room for microwave and refrigerator which is why we have those rooms at a reduced rate from the other room types".. yet the room I booked was NOT the "Economy King" offered when booked(I booked the regular King room, at a slightly higher rate), and is shown in the accompanying picture as being a MUCH larger room with two windows. NO mention of room size vs. any other King room, or the lousy location. Maybe, in the interest of truth in advertising, it should be mentioned that this room type is on a low floor just above the ugly rooftop with it's noisy equipment, accompanied by an accurate picture showing the size of this tiny room. Beautiful art deco lobby and nice staff, and I have to admit the room was very clean. But if you must stay downtown, do yourself a favor and spend the extra cash for the Four Points Sheraton down the street(unavailable at the time of our stay). Better yet, stay at the Country Lane BW in Mendenhall Valley. Cheaper and much nicer digs.

Jeffery Y.

Yelp
Rooms are small and dingy. Employees at the hotel are pleasant however the Accommodations appear not to have been updated in many many years. If you're here in the summertime, and the temperatures get to 75 to 85°, you need to know that there is no air-conditioning in the rooms. When I was here it was 79° and not very comfortable. I did laundry on our last day here and found the laundry room to be completely disgusting. The entrance is from outside of the hotel and the door did not lock. When I brought it to the attention of the desk, they knew about the broken door and admitted that knew about it for a couple days. Inside was very dirty with trash spilling out over all over the place

Chelsea M.

Yelp
The hotel claims to have free parking, but all of the spots in the small lot are taken by vans and tour bus cars. No street parking overnight. Drove around and around, up and down crazy winding one way streets. Parked in a lot close by, but all cars have to be moved by 8 AM. Not what I want to do on my vacation! Rooms are super old and outdated. Tiny rooms with no amenities. Walls are paper thin, you can hear everything! And No AC...even though it's Alaska, it's about 80 degrees right now. FYI rooms look about 20 years older than they do in the photos. Beware! Would not stay here again. Do not recommend.

Chris S.

Yelp
We arrived today and are staying here for two nights. There was a mixup with our rooms which wasn't a good start to our stay. The hotel is older and the rooms are small but decorated nicely. We walked into the bathroom and found a used ladies razor and a used bar of soap in the shower. Oops. Unfortunately there is no air conditioning like most places in Alaska and it's 80 degrees outside. Thankfully there is a fan and its going to cool off tonight so we will be ok. Keep in mind when you open your window at night to cool off you will hear the all the outside noises. You stay here because of the location. You are right in the middle of everything with lots of places to go and eat or even take a whale watching tour. Rodney who works At the front desk was not helpful instead when talking to him about the room issue said he does chants every night to avoid issues. Rodney needs to take customer service lessons classes. The three stars were for the location and for Bella who went above and beyond her duties.

Q S.

Yelp
The Baranof on first impression is very cute quaint hotel located in walking distance of everything downtown! The rooms are small and clean (no AC but we just opened our window)! Our deal also came included with breakfast. For a free hotel continental breakfast it was above average - fresh food, good variety. The staff at the breakfast was also the sweetest. I had such a nice time at the hotel until the day before check out when I returned from the day (after it had been cleaned) to find that my pearl earrings stored in case in the bathroom had been taken. I was very disappointed and upset to see that the hotel staff had violated their privileges to access the room and steal. BEWARE not to leave anything of value in the room, even if hidden because if found they will steal! I regret not wearing my earrings that day so I write this to warn future visitors

Harold B.

Yelp
I have little to add to the earlier negative reviews. The hotel has a lot of potential if given a thorough upgrade. But as it is, the rooms are worth $69/night at best. The rooms (I stayed in this hotel twice) lack even adequate lighting. The bathrooms are poorly equipped and the showers unsafe as to potential slips and falls. We had no phone service to the front desk. The personnel at the front desk were nice but woefully undertrained. It's all a terrible shame in that, as I indicated: properly upgraded, this could become a really nice hotel.

Lisa J.

Yelp
I hate to say it but this place is kind of a dump.. if you come during the summer the room doesn't have central air conditioning system so they have a portable air conditioner machine with a tube connected to the window... therefore, the window stays open and it gets cold at night. The walls are super thin, the bathroom is super tiny, and the maid will try to come in super early in the morning. The only good thing about this place is the location in Juneau but that's about it..

Emily A.

Yelp
I would like to preface that I have stayed in the Baranof a number of times and my stay was wonderful, however the events of this week were totally unacceptable. My husband and I stayed 5 nights in the Baranof during a legislative advocacy trip. Every morning at 6am the neighboring room's alarm went off for 11 solid minutes. Every morning we contacted the front desk, every morning we were told the room was unoccupied, and that they would take care of it. For 5 mornings, we were awoken by that alarm at 6 am. Every morning for 11 minutes we had to listen to it go off. If you have stayed in the Baranof before you know the walls are paper thin, but that usually isn't a problem as it maintains a fairly quiet clientele. The fact that we were told they would take care of this alarm situation in an unoccupied room for 5 days straight and it never happened is completely unacceptable. I am exhausted, I am sleep deprived, and I feel like the staff at the Baranof couldn't care less. Shame on you. It would have taken less than 5 minutes to send someone up and unplug that clock. Thank you for proving what the comfort of your guests means to your establishment.

Esther J.

Yelp
I stayed here one night. I gave the hotel two stars instead of one because the situation could've been an odd coincidence. The pros: room was very clean the bar at the end of the hall has descent food the staff was friendly Cons: -The room was very small -There was no hot water for a shower in the morning -Walls are paper thin and you can hear every conversation, toilet flush, door slam, fart. -the hotel is very old and elevator feels like it will break -the floor my room was on smelled like sewage

Dana L.

Yelp
This was a great hotel. I loved my stay and the staff were so accommodating. Shelby and Marelda helped me book my tour group. Great job!

Andrea L.

Yelp
The only place I usually stay when in Juneau. Miss the old cafe and the nice ladies working there. That place had a nice cozy feeling and much better menu. The main restaurant also missing the old ambience and now only open for breakfast and lunch. For dinner people have to go to bar area very strange for hotel to do that. Luckily the bar tender who looks like one of the three musketeers had a great memory when taking our order. The room I had was larger than normal. Definitely needs a face lift. Don't exactly look like the photos posted. The water in the kitchen comes out yellow. The room needs a painting. Room could also have a good shampoo as it smells stuffy and damp. Front desk and house keeping staff were very good. Best western now operates this

Keira K.

Yelp
Good hotel and clean rooms. Beautiful views of the mountains and convenient location! The parking was near impossible to find--I was told to try to find "legal street parking" if possible. Finally found the Baranof parking lot and it was mostly full or reserved for Hotel Vehicles. Overall, the place is cozy and clean. Almost everything in it is closed due to COVID, but there is an attached breakfast place that is still open. There is an abundance of shampoo and conditioner which is really nice. Also the person at the desk offered me a cookie when I checked in?

Carla H.

Yelp
Marella at the front desk provided stellar customer service on both of my stays at the Baranof! Not only did she greet me with kindness, but she went above and beyond to make sure I got what I needed. The Baranof is very lucky to have such an outstanding employee!

Ricky R.

Yelp
We stayed here on 8/30 after arriving from Anchorage at the conclusion of the first leg of our dual trip. The cruise company arranged this hotel at the time we booked the trip. Upon arriving at 10 PM from the airport, we had to wait nearly a half hour to check in as cruise ship workers were lined up throughout the lobby getting their rooms. When we finally checked in and arrived at our room on the 7th floor, appalled was too mild an adjective to what we found. The elevator, hallway and room smelled like 100 year old smoke, sewage and mold. The carpeting throughout was dirty and smelled worse. It was oppressively hot and the only solution was a plastic fan placed in front of a window that opened to the alley. We carefully checked throughout for bedbugs and other vermin and thankfully found none. BUT, we had to use our Lysol wipes on every surface. The bathroom tile was circa 1940 and had moldy grout of the same age. Had it not been 11 PM and having been up since 4am, we would have left. This hotel is exactly like the Chicago SRO (flophouse rooming). Shame on you Best Western to call this a premier collection. Run, don't walk away from this horrible hotel.
