Raise a Toast to Bartenders With Tequila Cocktails at These Atlanta Bars | Eater

"This unpretentious, simply decorated VaHi favorite has its focus right in its name: the bar and its barbacoa. A great illustration of the former is their Love the Mango cocktail, which combines Teremana and orange liqueur with real mango puree, lime juice, and agave – just a handful of their all-housemade mixers, designed to pair with premium fine tequilas. The cocktails are a good match for bar.bacoa’s tremendous list of tapas, which range from Spanish (Serrano ham mac and cheese, bacon-wrapped dates, paella) to Mexican (guacamole, street corn, and barbacoa nachos.) Tacos, however, take their inspiration from across the world, spanning Peruvian chicken to Korean beef, making this eclectic mix perfectly Atlantan." - Su-Jit Lin

Food, drinks, and service were phenomenal!! Thalius (hope I spelled that right!) was amazing! So attentive, personable, and made excellent drinks! The food was delicious! We got Brussel sprouts, skillet queso (omg!), trailer park taco, chicken quesadilla, and key lime pie. It was all excellent! Highly recommend!

Google
An unassuming tucked away Mexican restaurant that I wish I had found sooner. The food came out super quick, the staff were great and the price was half of what I expected of a place with food and service like this. I’ll definitely be back. I was very impressed.

Google
Great service and food. The inside is trendy. The outside has that nice VaHi deck. There's space between tables, which adds to the experience. The service was quick and attentive. They're also cute, which is always nice. Three different folks visited my table for various things in the first few minutes. I was joking with the waitress that my old-fashioned usually comes with a cherry and twist but I respected their cocktail artistry. She promptly brought out a cherry and twist for me. Every smidge of service was prompt, friendly and I wanted for nothing. The chips were unusually flaky. They are not at all like to come in corn chip and quite tasty. In a world where tacos can be a blur, each of them was distinctive and tasty. I particularly liked the Korean taco. Also, the street corn was really tasty. If they had served a gallon of it, I probably would've eaten it. It's a little loud, but that's just me being picky. It has that busy vibe. This was an experience worth repeating.

Google
The food is excellent! I have tried most everything on the menu, and I recommend it all. The drinks are great too! A lot of thought went into the creation of their cocktail menu. The staff, the ownership, are a great group of people. I go at least 1-2 times a week.

Had an absolutely delightful time here tonight. It is an absolutely fabulous restaurant with some of the best staff and of course, food around the town. From making the reservation, to arriving and being seated, to the service and the food, our server, Samantha made us feel totally at home and very welcome. It is hard to come across such friendly and pleasant servers. It added to the deliciousness of the already delicious food. We were really impressed with their wide tapas range and of course their tacos options. They have a nice patio and a galley for outdoor seating. There is adequate free parking around as well. Highly highly recommended.

Google
Small but very busy place, we had a reservation so we were seated right away. The food is amazing. Everything is so fresh. The guacamole was delicious, seasoned well. The potatoes were crispy on outside and tender on the inside. The tacos were good as well. The drinks were not my favorite…too strong for my taste. You could not taste the juice at all…ordered the mango and the pineapple drinks. We had to ask for a “shot” of pineapple to add to the drink lol…

Google
I was very surprised, this was so very good and I look forward to going again! I had the Chile bbq salmon….so delicious! My friends has a variety of the tacos, and they were all very good. I also had the apple crisp which was pretty good (not as good as the main menu food) but still a nice ending to my meal. The portions are a little small, but that’s it, everything else was perfection. Highly recommend. Make sure to make a reservation

Google
From the neighborhood vibe at the extensive bar to the comfy indoor and outdoor tables, our experience at the neighborhood gem was extraordinary. The menu features so many tapas and salad options that it was a treat to select them and the nightly specials were creative and beautiful to see, pairing favorite flavors in unique ways. the bar offerings made our evening even more festive. Save room for the white chocolate cranberry bread pudding, Tres Leche, and chocolate tart with a hint or orange. Stile full and smiling

Yelp
The food was actually delicious, it all came out fresh and well seasoned. The service was also excellent- the staffs were friendly.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely excellent. Hands down, the cheese dip is the best I've ever had in my life--the golden crisp layer on top is next-level and seriously to die for. We also tried the barbacoa enchiladas which were rich, flavorful, and perfectly done. Our server was super kind and made the experience even better. Overall, just a great spot with amazing food and service. Would 100% go back. Update: I did go back--and brought my family this time. They all loved it just as much. This place is a winner!

Yelp
Such an excellent spot in the Virginia Highlands! Service spot on and everything we ate was delicious. It's a fun and lively spot and country music - my fave - was playing in the background. Note the Mac & cheese taco is on the website but not on the menu but you can get it if you ask.

Yelp
Really great menu. We got the queso and it was devine! Lots of fun options and quaint outdoor seating. The vibe of the restaurant is very cute. Perfect for a date night or girls night out. The service was really great as well. On the pricier end. Would go back to try some of their other items!

Yelp
First time here...LOUD LOUD LOUD...food was good , service was a little slow but probably because the server had a lot of tables not his fault. Probably won't need to come back. I guess if you want to sit outside in 90 degree humid weather it may be better, but not our thing.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Everything was so good. The inside was so cute and the staff was so sweet. I really enjoyed the tacos and they had a great variety. The appetizers were also really good. Will definitely be back to try more!

Yelp
I love Bar.bacoa! I'm sure they know me well as I order from here very often on Uber Eats! Some of my favorites are all of the tacos! Just amazing! The spanish potatoes, beef quesadillas, & the blackened shrimp tostada. The steak salad is so flavorful & tasty! Then my gawd, the dessert! The Chocolate Oblivion Truffle Tart is just to die for! Honestly you can't go wrong with anything here. They know what the heck they're doing in the kitchen!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely loved Bar.bacoa! The Spanish tapas and small plates were all delicious. Great flavors, great atmosphere I really enjoyed it!

Yelp
My brother and our group of friends came here for lunch today to escape the heat from walking around the Virginia Highlands arts festival. It was a first visit for all of us. The entrance has a nice bar area plus there is indoor and outdoor dining towards the back of the restaurant. We chose a table inside for a break from the heat. Everyone was super friendly and efficient. The menu had a great selection of food to please everyone and featured tapas for sharing as well as traditional main dishes. In addition they had four brunch specials served from noon until 4pm. Our group ordered a variety of items including the blackened shrimp tostada, the pork carnitas, the Peruvian chicken tacos in both corn tortillas and in lettuce wraps. We also ordered the mimosas and vinho verde white wine from Portugal. For dessert we ordered the tres leches cake and the churros. We finished with coffee. Food and service were outstanding! My one quibble was the lack of any vegan coffee creamer. They didn't have any oat milk or almond milk just traditional creamer or milk. I love this place and it's convenient to my office so I'm excited to come back and dine here again after work!

Andrew C.

Yelp
Great food! I had the queso dip as the app. Baked cheese crust on the top. It was so delicious. Then for the entree I had the salmon taco and a barbacoa quesadilla. Portions sizes are what you expect from a tapas style restaurant but gyat dang it's definitely worth the quality.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick dinner during the week, and this place is a vibe! The weather was great, so the patio and even inside was pretty packed so you can tell it's a popular spot. We still got seated right away and got super quick and attentive service. Their taco menu is so good! I tried the Korean bulgogi taco and the buffalo cauliflower taco. I got the buffalo cauliflower on lettuce wrap and I wish I had gotten both on the lettuce wrap. It was by far my favorite and gave it such a fresh element! My fiancé got the paella and it wasn't very memorable, just okay. Will probably try more of a taco variety and more tapas next time. Great menu and ambience!

Yelp
This is probably my favorite place in Atlanta the food is amazing!! I have probably eaten everything on the menu and its always a good time setting at the bar. The bartenders and waiters are always so good and the food comes out so quick. Prices are great also !

Yelp
I have been wanting to try Bar.bacoa for a while now. Unfortunately, I did not have a great first impression. Our server was kind of rude and pretty much ignored us most of the meal. After he delivered our entrees, he didn't even say one word to us again (even when delivering the bill). The food itself was really good, and I definitely will try it again at some point. Loved the Mexican corn!! The biggest issue I had during the night was that we ordered a non-alcoholic (virgin) margarita, and she was served a strong margarita full of tequila. Luckily, she was just taking a break from drinking and does not have an issue with alcohol. But as sobriety becomes a larger part of our society, restaurants need to treat non alcoholic requests the same way as food allergies. Some people can have major issues with alcohol, and if they took a sip of that margarita they could fall to a rabbit hole. Our server never apologized and did not even address the issue. He just seemed confused. I hope Bar.bacoa can take requests like this more seriously in the future. Because I know some people who are sober and could have major issues if they were given that margarita.

Yelp
Visited on a Sunday for cinco de mayo! They were one of few restaurants that allowed reservations. We arrived about 10-15 minutes early and parked in the lot behind the building which offers complimentary valet. We were still able to be seated and given menus. It was our first time visiting but I was happy that they had enough pescatarian and vegetarian options for me choose from. We were brought waters and then ordered the guac as an appetizer and 2 margaritas. He had the herradura palmoa margarita special and I had the teramana mango margarita. I ordered a baja and buffalo cauliflower taco while he ordered the peruvian chicken, salmon, and baja taco. We continued to talk while we waited. Drinks came then the app and our tacos. 1. My teramana margarita was better than his paloma 2. Buffalo cauliflower was better than the baja, but both were good 3. Peruvian chicken, salmon, baja 4. Those house made chips were delish and I enjoyed the guac We overall enjoyed ourselves and it was a nice first stop on our cinco journey (lol).

Yelp
While in Atlanta, two of my friends and I went to Bar.bacoa for a nice dinner since we hadn't seen each other in months. The restaurant is pretty small, so make sure you do reservations if possible. The ambiance is pretty cozy though. The menu had many options. I tried the octopus, carne asada, and calamari. All of the dishes were great. They all received a 5/5. The drinks were strong too, and I only needed one to liven up. All in all, I would recommend Bar.bacoa. The food was great.

Yelp
Good modern tacos and small plates restaurant in the heart of Virginia Highlands. Street parking is usually available withing 2-3 blocks.
google avatar

Vincent D.

Yelp
Quite the yummy experience! I love tapas for the variety you can get in one restaurant, as well as the fun with friends. I would recommend getting 6-8 tapas if you have a group of 4 to make it a powerful experience. Everything was really good, it would be hard to talk about them all! Some of the highlights were the octopus (tender, not chewy!) and Bar.bacoa quesadilla (surprisingly very filled with meat). Service was relatively quick and I appreciated that everything came in a timely manner! I would definitely come here again!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Let's start with 3 stars because I was not impressed with this restaurant. I specifically asked our server how the octopus was and her answer was that it was one of the best she's ever had. I love octopus and I had some really amazing ones.. This one was sad...the dish it's mainly potatoes and peppers....you barely find the octopus in there. The tacos are pretty good, we tried a few just to get an idea. Will go back because of its location and to try more food.

Yelp
Great spot for dinner after a show at the Fox! Unique selections perfect to share with another couple. Great service and delicious food. A little pricey but it's Atlanta so expected. Street parking available all around.

Yelp
Let's start with the food. Food came out promptly. Food was also warm. Some of the tacos/tapas that were ordered -Brisket&Mac&Cheese: Eh!!! Nobody at the table liked it to us, the pair just didn't go together and 5 people had it. -Baja: It wasn't bad but the Cole slaw could of been wet or they could have added more sauce on the taco itself -Shrimp: it was decent. I did like the shrimp had the crisp to it. Not over cooked -Salmon: the mango over powered the whole dish. But the fish was cooked nicely -PERUVIAN CHICKEN: it wasn't bad. I LOVE cucumbers. So it made it better to me. -Trailer Park: the gangs go to!! It was pretty good. -Korean Beef: the texture was a bit different. But not too bad. -BEEF BARBACOA: after eating all flour tacos, the corn taco did throw me off but it wasn't to bad. - Calamari: it was more breading than my liking but it wasn't terrible. Drinks I personally didn't have any drinks but 2 people out of our group did. -Majito: she said it was very bitter. (There were a lot of mint leaves) -Cadillac: he stated that the drink was majority liquor no mixture. Service: She wasn't the best. I hate that we were a big group because she did NOT deserve the $90 total in gratuity. After the food came she didn't come to check on us. Didn't offer any deserts. It was like she only waited on us because she had to.

Yelp
I met a friend here for tacos and it was the first place I've been in a while that had incredible flavor and great service, I will definitely return when I'm in the area. The outdoor area was covered and heated, so it was very comfortable. Even while it was raining outside.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I have gone to Bar.bacoa a couple of times. We really like the food and drinks. We enjoy the atmosphere, the decor, and the staff. You can't go wrong with a casual date night here! Pro Tip: everything is awesome, try it all!
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
My favorite spicy margaritas in the city. I get the uglier with strawberry. Also tried a variety of tapas - the fried goat cheese, Mexican corn, mac and cheese, and salmon taco. On a separate occasion I also had the nachos. Everything has been tasty.
google avatar

Kay R.

Yelp
A friend and I visited Bar.bacoa for a quick dinner before a show at the Fox. We had a reservation for 5, but due to traffic and parking, we walked in right at 5:15. Aware of their 15 minute hold policy, I even referenced it to the hostess. Thankfully, I didn't let her "Next time, call" remark irritate me. Instead I repeated, "It's 5:15 on the dot." There are lots of menu options--for both food and drink. I opted for the trailer park and brisket mac n cheese tacos--both were amazing! For the drink, I don't recall the name, but it was awesome. I had two. I ended the meal with the churros, which were also delicious. Everything was top notch. I would definitely return!

Angelica B.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious! I had different types of tacos & each taco was full of flavor! I went about an hour & a half before closing but I wasn't rushed to order or finish my food. The drinks were spot on, they weren't too strong nor watered down. The vibe was amazing, me & my friend talked the entire time & even had discussions about our tacos every time we tried a new one.
google avatar

Marco M.

Yelp
Great spot ! Great service ! Haven't had that good of a service in a while Todd was great Cocktail was good Could use a bigger selection of tequila is the only thing but coming back for sure !
google avatar

Ksenia F.

Yelp
In one word - yummy! Never had a bad meal here. The patio is lovely in summer, but the inside isn't bad either if you don't mind seating super close to other tables and possibly overhear their conversations. They have a full bar with many margarita specials. The parking is valet, or you can park on the street if you are lucky to get a spot. Some of the things I've tried on my several visits here: chips and salsa, various tacos, octopus, ceviche, paella. The menu is very varied and there is definitely something for everyone from tapas to tacos. The service can be somewhat spotty. Prompt and attentive one day, takes-half-an-hour-to-get-a-couple-of-tacos the other. Overall: great patio and food, full bar, valet or street parking. Definitely worth checking it out.
google avatar

Janet W.

Yelp
Husband and I came for date night on a Friday evening. I made reservations the day before and we had a lovely outdoor patio table next to the fresh pepper plants. We shared the bacon wrapped dates (so tasty, don't let the picture fool you), the goat cheese fritters which I liked, the barbacoa nachos plate, and the seafood paella. We parked in the complimentary parking in the back accessible from N Highland Avenue. Our waiter was courteous and made good recommendations. Come here for a lively evening with dates, family, or friends!
google avatar

Lena A.

Yelp
The food is really good here. The seafood in the ceviche and tacos are very fresh and delicious. Service is always great and the out door seating is super cute!
google avatar

Scot K.

Yelp
Exceptional food, service and atmosphere. Very impressed. Taco Tuesday half price tacos is a steal!!!
google avatar

Eryn H.

Yelp
I love a good tapas place. Bar.bacoa did not disappoint. My sister got the avocado taco , salmon taco and shrimp taco she said they all were good but liked the salmon one the most because it had a mango salsa. I ordered the posole which was good and tasted authentic. I also got the Korean beef taco and shrimp tostadas which were both really good. There was not a long wait and the service was great ! Be careful where you park because I did get a $75 citation
google avatar

Ritu P.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Service was awesome. Ambience was perfect on a Sunday afternoon sitting in their outdoor seating. Really lovely family meal.
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
Enjoyed a nice meal here on the cool air conditioned inside recently (the patio is beautiful otherwise and I'd highly recommend). Lots of interesting items on the menu and it is hard to choose. Started with some chips and dip and guac. We split the cheesy cauliflower, the octopus with chimichurri potato's, and crispy Brussel sprouts with bacon. The latter was probably my favorite. We aren't that hungry so this was plenty of food for me. Washed it all down with a cocktail special Black Forest and a special cocktail of the evening that was a little too syrup-e for me. Overall food was pretty good but I might not have ordered that well for my personal tastes. Cauliflower was very oile and super cheesy, although kind of good in a sickening way if that makes any sense ? It's good but you might not want to eat too much. The octopus was pretty good, a bit fishy, and more tomato-e than I was expecting. Chips are overly fried imo but good and again, others might go for them more. Guac/salsa were solid. Service was good and food came very quickly. I'd love to come back here to try more of the different options
google avatar

Alexis A.

Yelp
Great drink specials throughout the week with happy hour. The outside patio is really nice and shared with the spaces next door, but it doesn't feel overly crowded. Service could be a bit better/come around more often, but a friend said sitting at the bar they had the great service while they are dinner. The tacos were pretty good with the chicken tinga and carnitas being our favorite! The other tapas were just ok, but I'd definitely go back for the margaritas and to try more of the menu!

D B.

Yelp
We ordered the Peruvian chicken, Korean beef and salmon tacos and the Thai Chicken Skewers. Everything was delicious! Definitely recommending to all my friends!
google avatar

Clark D.

Yelp
I would have given them a 5 star review but the food is a little pricey and the cocktails were a little inconsistent. The cheese dip is amazing and the best thing to get. The rest of the menu is a little limited and overpriced. The quesadilla is solid but not really worth $15. The service has always been solid. Ambiance is nice.
google avatar

Jaz'Min L.

Yelp
Delightful place to grab a bite to eat and toss a few drinks back with a loved one or friend. We decided to try this place out since it was in the area of another place we enjoy often. We were not disappointed! Great selection, tapas style menu but everything we had was tasty. Will be returning.
google avatar

Pita S.

Yelp
Spent our Anniversary having dinner and drinks before a show at the Fox Theater. We sat at the bar and informed our bartender, Robert, our time constraint. He did not disappoint! He made sure we were good on our drinks and the tapas items came out quickly. Highly recommend the Goat Cheese Fritters, Calamari and for the street tacos: Korean BBQ & Trailer Park. The margaritas topped off the experience. We can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Cute, tasty little place, make a reservation - they get busy. The Mexican street corn is amazing - will definitely be back just for that. I love elote, but their combo is delicious. Little small, but so good. Nachos and crispy pork belly delicious, small plates, but good. Little on the pricey side, but come try their street corn!
google avatar

Dayana V.

Yelp
So good. Def make a reservation because it's a smaller venue. Great date night atmosphere & the lighting is perfect- dim light to set whatever mood. I love a good tapas place, plus they have smaller plates to share as well. We ordered some items to share and that was def the way to go. Shrimp tostadas, carnitas, and calamari to share. We each ordered a taco each as well. I had the avocado taco. I was surprised with how good it was; it was even vegetarian. I don't remember the name of my drink, but it was delicious. Plenty of food and we even had leftovers. Would go back if I was in the area

Gina S.

Yelp
Always a cool vibe inside and gotta love the patio when the weather's nice. Good servers/bartenders (Kelly is so nice). And most importantly - great food! The tacos are some of my faves to order, the tapas dishes I've had are consistently tasty and the queso is great too. Drinks are strong and taste good. Love this place!

Adhithi C.

Yelp
The chips, queso, and salsa were absolutely delicious and a great starter. The Mexican Street Corn was also suprisingly really really good and flavorful, and was also a nice appetizer. The tacos itself carried too much flavor and I was not the biggest fan of the buffalo cauliflower with ranch. However, the ambience of the restaurant was really nice and service was fairly quick too considering they were pretty busy. Would definitely recommend!!!

Sarah W.

Yelp
They were celebrating their anniversary in Virginia highlands! The food was quick to the table and everything was amazing. Tadeo was a great server and very attentive! Great for a casual date night

Melanie S.

Yelp
I love this place! Good ambiance, service and food. Have been back multiple times. Love the tapas style, good drinks and lots of plant based options!!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Virginia Highlands is a really nice area, and the food here is always so good. This restaurant is cute, but the space inside is small. When the bar gets full, and people are standing around, it can be hard to find the hostess stand. I would recommend putting them at the very front so people know where to go ask to be seated. The staff was very friendly, and the outside patio is really nice to enjoy on a beautiful day. Even sitting outside, we never felt neglected or forgotten about. They kept coming around, and the margaritas kept pouring in. They have tapas style plates, which were very good, but just a little spicy. The tacos were also very delicious. My recommendation is the Peruvian Taco - it was so flavorful! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Bar.bacoa is one of my top tier tapas restaurants in Atlanta! I tell my friends who are visiting from out of town about it all the time! Every time I've been there and tried something new it's been amazing. From the tacos to the pozole to the larger plates to the drinks to the deserts every single thing on their menu is well prepared, well priced, and absolutely delicious. They're located right in the hustle and bustle of Virginia Higlands and have a free valet parking lot behind the restaurant (be careful, it's easy to miss!). It's always busy when we go, so I would absolutely recommend making a reservation. I've done this every time my husband and I go and we've never had to wait! Their servers are super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and they'll give you plenty of time to think about what to order or if you want to take time between ordering items they give you space to enjoy your meal and order as you go which I love! Great date night spot or place to go with friends so you can try lots of their dishes.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I'm giving this place a 4/5 mostly for service. Our server wasn't very friendly, and didn't come back until we flagged him down so we could order more tapas. Other than that, the location and most of the food we got was so good, I'm still thinking about it a week later! We had the goat cheese fritters, Mexican street corn, albondigas, shrimp a la Catalan, mussels, and a lamb barbacoa taco. We also ordered several drinks (we had to get our servers attention every time because he didn't check in on us) and a bottle of wine. Maybe it was just an off night for service, would definitely still come back! The shrimp a la Catalan, the street corn, and the fritters were my favorite but everything was great! Reasonably priced as well.
google avatar

Carlie M.

Yelp
Came in for dinner last night with a friend. We made reservations for 6:15 on a Tuesday night. Always recommend making a reservation! There is complimentary valet parking in the lot out back. This places is not huge. They have a bar at the front and the dining room in the back. We sat in the dining room. We started with margs - one house and one skinny. They were good margs! Pretty strong. We got an order of the skillet baked queso with the additional guac on the side. The queso was delicious! We got the beef and potato empanadas and the barbacoa quesadilla to split. The quesadilla was very flavorful! Plenty of food for the both of us. Overall a good meal! The tacos also looked delicious.
google avatar

Dominique N.

Yelp
On the pricier side, but it really depends on what you get to eat. It only takes me about two tapas to fill up, so that could be relatively cheap in my case, but not for the ravenously hungry. I love the empanadas, all of the vegetarian dips and the scallops. More to try, but I end up craving those when I go there! The drinks are pretty basic prices, not too expensive or too cheap. The patio is nice and where I usually try to sit. The atmosphere is great as well, so i would definitely check it out!
