25 Essential Tacos in and Around Denver

"Credit goes to Stoned Appetit for spreading the word about this South Federal surprise, whose name answers the question of what to order: tender, heady barbacoa tacos and more barbacoa tacos. Unless, that is, birria calls, in which case answer it: It delivers right down to the hearty, eminently drinkable consomé." - Eater Staff, Ruth Tobias

Barbacoa El Oso

Google
Barbacoa El Oso was recommended by a coworker, and I am thankful they did. Let’s start with the bad. The building is janky, inside and out. The parking is horrible, and entering the building is by no means ADA compliant. It is what it is, but I hope they are able to give their facility a much needed upgrade. Positives: We were warmly greeted instantly upon entering the building. The hostess was very outgoing and personable. We had the Barbacoa tacos and they were amazing. Not at all dry or greasy. The sauces were delicious. We will definitely stop in again if we are in the area.

Another amazing hole in the wall with great food. Do not pass this by! The Birria tacos are wonderful. Some of the best in town. The Gordidtas are very spicy and perfect. Get them with cheese! And the carne asada street tacos are very good as well.

Good food but needs a lift up, it looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for years. Food was good tho I guess that’s what really matters

Such a good place! The barbacoa feels so authentic and their salsa roja is so boom. The place itself takes you to a Chihuahua restaurant.

Prices for a order of tacos are double in person then on the app the lady in the front is rude and worst food gave me cold tortillas

I came here wanting some tacos with a friend and, it’s just an odd place. The place looks very old. Everything is falling apart in there. The lady who served us was nice but she seemed very stressed because I think she was the only lady in there taking care of tables and togos. The food was ok, the meat is very stringy and the tacos are greasy. Another silly thing I noticed was they serve everything on paper plates. Even for people eating in, and wrapped in foil Togo.

Had the chorizo breakfast burrito. $7.50 seemed a little steep for a handheld breakfast burrito, but it was really good. Nice size, seasoned ingredients. Building could use a little work. I'll be back for the birria

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican street tacos. Love the pastor. Warning: the quesadillas are HUGE.

Yelp
Tacos are great, but any place that decides they just wanna close 45 minutes early sucks. People follow your hours and make trips based on advertised hours, deciding you only want to sell by the pound when your cooks are sitting in booths texting is ridiculous.

Yelp
Restaurant on Federal and Cornell. This review I'm vouching for the tacos de Barbacoa, if you get leg meat you getting the wrong barbacoa. $2 per taco they won't disappoint you. The competition always disappoint me with their fake barbacoa tacos. These guys know how to make the real deal. Great service and fast, they have a decent salsa bar. The tortillas need an update, they are good but they can better. I will be back to try their birria, and hopefully they won't disappoint.

Yelp
The birria tacos here were super tasty, and the consomme had so much flavor. The cheese was slightly overfried, but it didn't effect it enough to take away from the flavor bomb. Staff was friendly.

Yelp
So I forgot my lunch today and decided to look for a taco joint. I remember seeing Barbacoa El Oso on my Facebook feed. The place is a hole in a wall with only one other customer there. Let me tell you, the barbacoa was delicious and the salsa was great. Great tacos are hard to find in Denver, guess what I found them on South Federal Blvd.

Yelp
Tasty and as authentic as if they used the water from Tijuana! 6 hours after eating 2 street tacos and I'm stuck on the toilet vomiting out of the wrong end!

Yelp
Ate there yesterday and the barbacoa burrito was the best I ever had. For $5 I wish it were bigger, about the size of your typical handheld breakfast burrito, but that's my only complaint. This is made from the beef head here, not goat like a lot of other places. The meat is super tender and very well flavored. I also got a carnitas taco and an al pastor taco. Carnitas was perfectly crispy and al pastor was as good as any I've had. They sell the meat by the pound, which comes with a bunch of tortillas. Definitely the route I'm going next time.
