"The name slightly gives it away, as barbacoa cooked underground in a hot stone-lined oven is certainly a big deal here. However, Barbacoa Obispo Cocina Rural, where Oaxacan cuisine is front and center, also shines a spotlight on birria and jabali, which can be served as memelas, blandos, quesadillas, or tlayudas, as well as tacos al vapor. Decisions aren't easy with so many tempting offerings, but hits include barbacoa blandos (your choice of meat), surtidos (with a blend of cuts), or meat-filled tetelas. Of course, their weekly specials designed for sharing at the table are also a good idea. You may be stuffed, but nothing closes out a meal here quite like a cafe de olla sided by a concha with whipped cream and strawberries." - Michelin Inspector

Although there was a hair in the tortillas, this place was really good. The pre food seeds and chips were great. The coffee was great. The main food was delicious. The service was friendly and attentive. Parking is very limited. Many good options in the menu. Will definitely return.

I went for an early morning hike in the mountains and on my way back to the city I saw a huge sign that said barbacoa so I thought I’d check out the place. As I went inside I was greeted by Samuel who luckily also spoke English perfectly and he told me a bit about the place. I wasn’t even hungry tbh but the hospitality pulled me in. Samuel patiently explained the menu to me and suggested a few small dishes to try. I was blown away by how good the food was and ordered some more. The next day I had to come back with my partner to flex what a gem I had found (but also i because I wanted to go again when I’m more hungry so I could eat more). Luckily Samuel was working that day too and he could help us pick the right dishes for our taste. Overall everything about this place from food to drinks, atmosphere, crockery, music was amazing but more than anything, the warm hospitality made this, one of the most memorable stops during my visits to Mexico.

Tasty barbacoa and birria with a lot of different options including some combos, tacos, tlayudas, quesadillas, memelas, ticucos, and so much more. The quesabirria was delicious. The staff is super attentive and friendly. The vibe is lively but also chill. The space is rustic but feels contemporary at the same time. They have coffee, juices, and cocktails (with specials on Sunday). I’ll definitely be back soon.

I'm glad I found this gem! The flavor was unbeatable and the atmosphere was awesome. I liked going here for one of my best Oaxaca experiences I've had. The food was perfect, service, and the Mezcal drinks were amazing.

This place did not disappoint. Food was excellent and it may just very well be one of my new favorite breakfast spots when we come to Oaxaca. The open kitchen is lovely and the food and service is excellent. Looking forward to returning.

Quick service, great food, be careful of portion sizes, and be careful, I don’t think any waiters speak English, all Spanish!

We walked from centro to this restaurant and had a lot of fun doing it. I highly recommended! The memelitas and cocktails were excellent! And so was the barbacoa.
