Food is so fresh, portions are perfect size. The pasta and eggplant are so fresh and you will leave filling so full and energized but not bloated. 10/10

Had late dinner. The staff was wonderful, and very attentive to our needs I was impressed. The food was spectacular, taste on point. It was flavorful but not overpowering. We ordered another dish recommended by our waiter which was so good I forgot to take pictures. The restaurant's atmosphere was cozy not too loud. I was there later in the evening so it might be different earlier. There is also outdoor seating, and a ramp is provided for accessibility needs.

We had a nice dinner with friends at Barbalu! Love the atmosphere, very chic yet comfy. Food was delicious and service friendly. The only reason why I don’t give 5 stars is that we had to wait for the pasta for like 40 min. And our waitress didn’t notice until we told her. Also I find the salads kind of small.

Google
Alex our server was amazing! As well as the overall service! He told us beforehand, that pizza was not available. So, we went with pasta: - Maccherone Ragu - Cavatelli with Mushrooms and Truffle. They were a bit pricey, but delicious! Cocktails were top notch!! (We ordered Yuzu Basil Smash and Averna Old Fashioned) We chose Tiramisu for a dessert to share! It's light and tasty! Atmosphere was also amazing! All in all, we enjoyed this place a lot and would recommend it 100%!

Google
Great place with great food. Service was excellent. Atmosphere was modern but comfortable.

Google
The pan roasted Arctic char with veggies was great. Loads of olive oil and both cooked to crispy perfection. The pasta was delicious, I've tried various ravioli of the day, as well as other options; the pasta was tender and the flavors intense without being overwhelming or unnecessarily heavy. The pizza is good and competes with many good pizzerias in the area. The tiramisu was creamier and more delicate than usual, and I liked it though it was bit more sugary than I expected. The outdoor tables benefit from the wide sidewalk. It's on the pricier side, but it makes up by being reliable and consistent with the quality.

Google
This place is so, so, so good. The food is perfectly executed without being pretentious, and the service is friendly, fast, and welcoming. The interior of the restaurant is sleek and modern but still feels comfortable. This would be a great place to take a date or have a dinner/lunch out with friends. Good happy hour prices, too. 10/10

Google
Barbalu is a family owned restaurant with an amazing staff. My friend and I enjoyed our time here- the portions are just right and there serve amazing cocktails. We had the gimlet and their special mango martini. The atmosphere was especially cozy with soft lighting.

Yelp
Visiting Brooklyn and my friend who lives in the area recommended this place. Had a nice dinner, inside is cute and it's an open floor plan. You can see the food being made around you. I had the broccoli pizza which was delicious and my friend, who is gluten free, had the short rib pasta. They change out the water in the pasta which is wonderful. Eric our server was great and I would come back next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Overall I think this place is a solid, well executed Italian spot. My group and I ordered the following: - Capricciosa Pizza: If you like olives on your pizza, you'll like this. The crust was also really nice in a fluffy, good chew kinda way. - Cavatelli w/ Mushroom + Black Truffle: My personal favorite of the pastas. I found the truffle taste good, but not overwhelming and the mushrooms were nice and umami. - Squid Ink Tonnarelli: A nice squid ink seafood pasta. Nice mix of seafood although more than a couple of shrimp would've been nice. - Pappardelle Braised Short Rib Ragu: Pretty standard, but I did find the portion size for this quite small. While portions were a bit tiny imo, the food was well executed. I do think they did a better job at pizza than pasta dishes. Space is nice for a casual date night or group meal. Service was friendly and checked in on us occasionally. Probably wouldn't go too out of my way for this place, but a good option if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Three stars only because service picked up in the empty restaurant only after a few more diners entered. Food: MEH! I rarely ever add salt to anything, but it was a first to add salt and pepper to a very bland Caesar salad of all things. I was handed a barely functional pepper mill... so annoying. My friend enjoyed the steak, while my lasagna was mediocre. No reason to return.

Yelp
As soon as you walk in this restaurant feels fresh and new with high ceiling and minimalist decor. The staff is super friendly and often checks on you. The food here is amazing. Authentic Italian. Started with the meat antipasto that had some of the best selection I have had in NYC. The pasta is homemade, my fave was the cavatelli with mushroom and truffle. The pizza is out of this world, the dough is perfect crispy yet fluffy crust. The broccoli rabe and sausage are must tried and the vegetarian was my favorite. Will be coming back.

Lily T.

Yelp
A friend was visiting and was craving Italian and I took her here since I was also in the mood for pasta. We arrived at 6:30pm for our reservation and it wasn't very crowded and ordered 3 dishes: - homemade Cavatelli with mixed mushrooms and black truffle - homemade pappardelle with braised short ribs ragu - mixed greens and shaved radish salad I thought the food was pretty good and they were normal sized portions. It's a cozy restaurant with a full bar. I took off 1 star as I felt like I had to ask them to refill my water glass pretty often (noticed they filled the other tables but somehow always missed our table? Our table was also placed right by a giant pillar in the restaurant ‍)

June J.

Yelp
delicious pizza, but contents were sliding off the crust a lil too much for my liking. we got the broccolini and diavola. the pasta (bucatini) was great too - delicious really. caesar salad was aight cute space, prob wont run back here but no regrets in going

Patrick N.

Yelp
I have been here a few times. I really like how spacious this place is. The pasta is elegantly done with great flavors. The lamb rack has a good balance of fat and lean, with a good char. Pizzas were also delicious with fresh ingredients and dough with great texture My only complaint is that pizza was unavailable during lunch time the last time we visited. The server told us after we were seated. So, maybe call ahead to confirm they have pizza.

Yelp
An amazing Italian restaurant in boreum hill! Food: we got the burrata, arancini, and cavatelli! The cavatalli was absolutely incredible - the mushrooms added a burst of flavor! By far my favorite dish! The burrata was great on a hot summer day but I'd probably not order this again! The arancini was delicious! Service: good service! They did forget one of our orders but fixed it after Price: fair prices Ambience: I loved the ambience - it was very romantic! They had both indoor and outdoor seating!

Yelp
Had delivery to hotel and I asked for utensils and added in note pleading as I was in a hotel. As soon as I opened the bag, no utensils. I was so happy that there was a restaurant that offered for the missing items. Ordered two items , I had the Rigatoni alla norma and I got the pappardelle. The verdict on the pappardelle, not bad don't believe I will reorder again. But the rigatoni was pretty good.

Carolina B.

Yelp
Date night with hubby did not disappoint! Lovely atmosphere, plenty of seating, and service is VERY nice! All the food we ordered was delicious. Romantic spot for dates and still a great choice for a friendly get-together.

Marlena K.

Yelp
Maybe I came on an off day? Service was strange no one really came by to check how we liked the food after they took our order. Shrimp and calamari app came with only 3 shrimp and a ton of calamari. The pasta was cooked perfectly but the sauce was just okay. Drinks were nothing special for the price tag. Ambiance was cute. Overall for about 170 for three people I would not be back. Salad was very good but nothing that would make me come back.

Yelp
Nice, quaint restaurant in Brooklyn. Able to get a reservation same day for later at night. The restaurant was mostly packed with 3 tables for two seaters and the host let us pick which one we prefer. Service was FAST! As soon as we ordered our drinks, appetizers, and main courses came out with no wait time. But not too fast! Good waiting between appetizers to entrees so we didn't feel rushed. The food was solid! Great caesar salad, the Neapolitan pizza was great, and the rigatoni eggplant pasta was also a banger. Would definitely recommend this place JUST based on the food. Only reason I'm giving this 4 instead of 5 stars was because we ordered the special pizza for the day as it had tomato sauce on it versus another option (Broccolini) which didn't have tomato sauce on it. The special pizza was brought out with no tomato sauce on it, we told the waiter who then said it doesn't come with tomato sauce on it and then offered to go get a menu to prove it. We said no it's fine and shortly after he brought a side of tomato sauce for us to put on the pizza. A nice gesture, but it would've been better if they could've brought us another pizza cooked with tomato sauce. Nonetheless, the tomato sauce on the side made it SOOOOOO MUCH better.

Yelp
Came from the Barclays and my daughter selected this little gem.. it's meticulously clean and the wait staff are attentive and helpful.. the food is inviting and delicious . You can't help but look at it on everyone's table nearby. And the aroma? Oh yeah.. we had bufala and prosciutto appetizer along with fried calamari and shrimp.. the calamari was light and delicious . The shrimp ? It was ok but the calamari was superb. The prosciutto app was beyond delicious and fresh with buffalo mozzarella.. for dinner I had squid ink pasta with tomatoes garlic olive oil and lots and lots of seafood!! Outstanding ! My diaghter had the lamb chops , cooked to perfection as recommended by our waiter - medium is was but it was more like MR as we indeed wanted it.. I would go back every day as the menu had lots of choices and they all looked tremendous ..

Yelp
One of the best meals I've eaten and went there twice on a recent work trip. Great food and wonderful service. We had a small party one night and bigger one the next. Rare that I eat at the same place while traveling, it was that good. Recommend reservations.

Erika P.

Yelp
The food here is so so good!! I'm still thinking about it days later. The 2 of us split a salad, mushroom pizza, and pasta & there was not a crumb left on the plate. Everything is super fresh and perfectly cooked & they have plenty of vegetarian friendly options. Service was speedy & I definitely recommend a reservation because it was packed on a Friday night. The restaurant is not too big so it did feel a little cramped but it was worth the squeeze for that meal. They also have some really great drinks.

Francesca H.

Yelp
The cutest Italian place in Brooklyn. The vibes were awesome, the food was amazing and the service was good!

Robert W.

Yelp
This is actually a great restaurant that I will return to whenever in Brooklyn! The wait staff was kind, smart and super helpful and the Italian food like pizza and pasta and salad, was 9.5 on a 1-10. We were there a bit early and needed to catch a plane, so they packed us food for the flight which saved us from eating bad airplane food. The owner was around and she asked how everything was...a very good sign that she really cares. Go there. Eat. You will enjoy if you love Italian food, a great atmosphere and really nice attentive staff!

Yuliya D.

Yelp
Very cozy and lovely spot. Had a luncheon/dinner hybrid there. Decor is modern, a lot of space. Food: calamari were fresh and crispy. My complaint about salads was that green salad had jalapeño slices - too spicy for me, radicchio was difficult to eat due to the way it was served and being chewy, however, both ideas were very good. That is pretty much all the critique I have. Pasta dishes were wonderful, we tried ravioli, cavatelli with mushrooms and short rib fettuccine - AMAZING. Everyone had Affogato and we shared chocolate cake (it is traditional Italian version) and tiramisu. Drinks including smash and old fashioned were also great. Service was prompt and efficient. Loved it and will come back PS The restaurant has its own alcohol menu and cork fee is $35 for byob

Fula O.

Yelp
Unlike many Italian restaurants Barbalu has a stark open almost industrial feel to the space with the large windows and dark lettering in the wall. I liked it but if you want the typical darker more intimate feel this isn't it. Our table of four ordered the calamari to start. I liked that it was lightly breaded and fried well with being over fried. It was a little bland. We then proceeded to over pastas foe our entrees which were all fantastic Lasagna of the day Short rib ragu Pasta Pappardelle Mango martinis Tiramisu Pastas were fantastic. Plan on coming back to try the pizza next time

Tamar L.

Yelp
Very charming, winning feel, kind of like a chill neighborhood house party. The food is subtle but elevated Italian food; simple but masterful, with great textures and tastes. My favorite thing was the polenta with porcini mushrooms. The pastas were perfectly al dente, not too heavy or rich, but delicious. Olive oil cake and chocolate hazelnut cake were amazing. You can't go wrong here.

Vincent C.

Yelp
Maurizio, Makes the best Sicilian Pizza I ever had like My Mother's!!! Everything they serve is absolutely amazing! Deliciouso!!!!

Alissa S.

Yelp
My husband and I came here on a Thursday night without a reservation and was able to get a seat outside. The servers were great and the location was nice to people watch and wasn't too loud. We had the caesar salad and for pastas we got the Homemade Squid Ink Tonnarelli allo Scoglio and Homemade Orecchiette Squash + Salsiccia. The portion size of the caesar salad was on the small side but it tasted good. The squid ink was spicy which we were not prepared for because it did not mention spice anywhere on the menu. The spaghetti was al dente though, and the seafood was good. I had a bite of the orecchiette from my husband and it tasted good. Portion size is on the smaller side, but I would still give this place another chance and maybe try their pizzas!

Christine H.

Yelp
Cute spot for pasta and pizza! Came with two friends on a Sunday night. We made a reservation, but it didn't seem necessary. While there were enough people, the restaurant never filled up. We ordered the squid ink pasta, the mushroom truffle pasta, and the pizza of the day (mushroom truffle prosciutto). They're able to replace pastas, so we switched out the cavatelli in the mushroom pasta with bucatini, which I appreciated! The squid ink pasta was delicious! A bit on the salty side, but texture was great and the seafood inside was cooked well. Similarly, I found the mushroom truffle pasta to be a bit salty. They overcooked the bucatini so it had expanded more than it needed to, but the flavor was great and an overall solid pasta. Pizza was DELICIOUS!!!!! I really liked the thin crust and you can see the pizzas being made in the back. We also ordered 2 tiramisus - highly recommend! They came in the same water glasses they used, so it was a perfect portion. I was pleasantly surprised by this spot. It has a cute ambiance and overall good food. Will definitely return!

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Cute Italian place in Brooklyn! I liked the decor and vibes of the restaurant! I feel like it's be cute to go on a date there's no loud music and it felt pretty intimate . For food- It was honestly good but nothing too special . I liked the ragu pasta the best and the spritz was tasty! I had the calamari as an appetizer it was a good solid calamari . The pasta was good as well and I really liked the meat they used that was paired with the ragu. For the pizza- I enjoyed the sauce they used! As for service it did take a lil longer to receive my check but I liked that nothing felt rush!

Cheyenne B.

Yelp
Came here for dinner to meet a friend who visiting. Wanted to find somewhere that was easy and accessible, and with good food. This place didn't disappoint! Had a reservation and was sat down immediately, got there right before the dinner rush. Service was FAST, almost felt a little rushed but they were attentive. Good variety of menu (pasta, pizza, main dishes) and a simple drinking menu. Prices weren't crazy which I loved and the dishes were good portions. Food came out fast and warm, well seasoned. A great place and would definitely come here again. Would definitely recommend to check out.

AJ G.

Yelp
Went once. Got food poisoning from the calamari. Pasta portion was small and taste was unremarkable.

Dayo E.

Yelp
I know Barbalu Manhattan for it's Italian food and dinner menu but I decided to stop by for Brunch. We got the steak and eggs, eggs Benedict and Italian crepes. The eggs Benedict were definitely the star of the show. The home fries are also really tasty. The steak was cooked medium but was just alright. The crepes were really tasty and sweet but peach heavy. The service was good and the staff was really nice. It was quiet on a Sunday afternoon which was nice on the day and we stayed for quite some time after our meal with no complaints. Will definitely be back

Monica L.

Yelp
what a lovely surprise this restaurant turned out to be! The restaurant is spacious and perfect for a group outing or a date. Was able to eat here without a reservation on a weeknight. The margherita pizza was absolute perfection - the taste and texture was so much better than expected. would absolutely order this again. also had the pappardelle and cavatelli and both were flavorful and delicious.

Sorina P.

Yelp
Great pizza! Ordered pizza to go- service was prompt and friendly. Will be dining in next time in the area. Very nice ambiance inside. Great for date nights.

Danielle A.

Yelp
Food was just OK and the portions were extremely small for the prize. There are a lot of other Italian restaurants I would go to over this one in the neighborhood.

Stephanie P.

Yelp
During a quick visit to Brooklyn, o wanted some authentic Italian food. I loved the decor and set up of Barbalu. The service was great. I had the Caesar salad had the all roam out of dressing and was flavorful. For my entree I had the homemade Cavatelli with mixed mushrooms and black truffle. It was light and the pasta was fresh. It was a great meal.

Katie H.

Yelp
Delish food. Lovely welcome service. A local fave. Def try the lasagne or one of the pizzas. They make a mean Negroni too.

Gale V.

Yelp
This is a 3.5 star spot. The pappardelle was cooked perfectly al dente with a rich tender pull apart braised short rib ragu. The bf had a broccolini pizza but it fell short of his expectations as the veggies were bitter and the white pie dry. He has been here before so he mentioned there was a better tasting pizza. This was all I had so this is all I can comment on. The pizza looked good though! Get the pappardelle if you are a carnivore.

Jina P.

Yelp
This is possibly my favorite Italian restaurant in NYC. The servers were incredibly kind and the space inside was spacious with lots of tables. They gave us a complimentary basket of bread and olive oil, which was delicious. Our pasta tasted super fresh and flavorful and I loved every bite. The service was also pretty fast too.

Liz B.

Yelp
Ambiance was smooth, romantic and cozy. Great spot for a date or getting dressy with friends for some amazing Italian. Waiters were always available, food came out quickly and fresh and hot. I ordered the prosciutto pizza, big enough to share but also for leftovers. Not too heavy on the toppings and the crust was crunchy and soft at the same time. Just a delicious piece of pizza that I highly recommend! Also enjoyed a glass of rose and complimentary bread and olive oil to start. My friend enjoyed and demolished the ragu pasta and a white wine. Pretty empty at first for a Tuesday night but as time went on it filled up pretty quickly so I'd recommend doing reservations just to be safe, especially if you have a large group. Excellent spot in Brooklyn!

Johanna B.

Yelp
A late lunch/early dinner and a craving for pizza led me straight away to Barbalu one Saturday afternoon. As a first timer, the ambience was welcoming and service was attentive. We started with a delicious Aperol Spritz and ordered the same pizza--The Parmiagiana. I noticed it took a little longer than usual and after finishing my meal and chatting with the pizza maker, I learned the Eggplant was roasted. The Parmigiana was a personal pizza with eggplant, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese. Excellent. The portion size was filling and/or can be shared if selecting an appetizer to start. Great service, cozy atmosphere and delicious pizza. Solid and looking forward to returning.

Dona F.

Yelp
Delicious. Not the biggest menu ever. Basically pizza, salads and pasta. The diavolo pizza was amazing. The crust was tasty and springy. The soppresata wasn't too spicy. Kale salad was also fantastic. Crunchy large croutons and parm cheese. Excellent coffee good service.

Kristopher W.

Yelp
I had a chance to check out Badbalu for dinner and it was great! We had a large party but the service was great and everyone seemed to enjoy the dining experience. The ambiance was great with a contemporary feel with great music playing. I ordered the short rib ragu and it was delicious. It was a popular dish at our table and our waiter recommended it. I also had a good cocktail that was refreshing. This was a great dining experience!

Helen M.

Yelp
The food is good. Unfortunately, every single time something is missing, even if you explicitly ask for it. They'll include the olive oil or forget the bread. You'll get the bread but not the side of Parmesan cheese. They'll forget the bread, Parmesan, and oil but remember the utensils you ask for. I've tried calling directly to address but the restaurant does not answer their phone nor do they have a working mailbox.

Natalia S.

Yelp
I always enjoy coming here! The service is top notch, they're always so attentive, accommodating and just overall a great staff! The pasta is homemade and my go to is always the paradelle with braised rib. It's so fresh, filling and the meat is literally falling apart. Cocktails are also great, if asking for a margarita during happy hour I would suggest switching the tequila for a high end option as the house tequila is less than par. The restaurant overall is very cute inside! It's a great size, I love the aesthetics and the vibe is always calming. The tables along the wall are a little tight, but I wouldn't call it a deal breaker!

Juliette P.

Yelp
Our group of 5 came here for a Friday dinner. The place was packed and we sat toward the back -- It was a bit loud as it looked like every seat was taken in the restaurant. The waiters were responsive and could make out the specific needs of our group. We started with the epic meat and cheese platters which honestly looked large enough for 6 people. We then each ordered a variety of pasta dishes -- though I also had the branzino. From what I gathered, the squid ink pasta was a favorite though the short rib pasta was also excellent. For dessert there was a flourless chocolate cake and something else -- though after dinner and the large appetizers, no one was that motivated. I'd like to come back on a non-peak hour for another meal.

Ric T.

Yelp
Eating outside on a gorgeous evening highlighted an excellent meal with great company. Crissi served us admiringly. The black Tonnarelli with assorted seafood was excellent topped with a Johnny Walker Black. The Rousse was a primo dessert. Try it.

Heidi L.

Yelp
New. Made to order. Perfect for outdoor dates. I visited Barbalu for weekend late dinner. Even though it was close to 10, the place was packed. Outdoor seating especially was very popular during summer night. The server was very knowledgeable about food and had a great recommendation. As a group, we all ordered pizza which tasted like freshly grown veggies and hand tossed. I would like to try some other entrees like pasta dishes when I get a chance.

Tiana M.

Yelp
I went when they were still in Manhattan with friends for a last-minute dinner on a week night and it was the perfect place. The food here is SO GOOD. I had the special ravioli of the day which was spinach ricotta with tomato oil and my lord was it good. Our waiter was cool and sitting outside was perfect.

Martha A.

Yelp
Been here on 2 occasions. The first time the service was quite poor: We waited a long time to order, and an even longer time for our food. It was a Saturday night, so an extended wait may be expected, but this was a bit more than an acceptable wait. And sometimes the food is just so good you just know you'll be back anyway. I had the lasagna. The pasta is made in-House, and it shows. I was back a few weeks later and had to get that lasagna again. This time I had the fried calamari , too, and it was delectable. The food is fresh, well prepared, and so tasty! The only problem is I want to try the other menu items, but that lasagna is irresistible! Can't wait to go back.

Susan G.

Yelp
The absolute best Italian food! We've been here twice and have never been disappointed. Every pizza and pasta is delicious. We got the Prosciutto and Rucola Pizza to share, which was fresh and flavorful. For the pastas, we got the Rigatoni Alla Norma, Pappardelle, bucatini, and lasagna. You can't go wrong with any of the pasta dishes. The service is excellent and I would recommend making a reservation if you're coming for Friday or weekend dinner. The ambiance is lively and comfortable.

Ann Beatriz A.

Yelp
The restaurant looks nice inside and has an open space concept. We love the spritz and the pizza but was a little disappointed on the pasta and ribeye since it's bland. There's taste to it but you can tell it lacked seasoning. Service was okay too.

Esther J.

Yelp
Excited to check out this highly rated Italian restaurant, we trekked with our 1 year old (not an easy feat) from a semi-neighboring area. We were apparently the first customers of the day, so just in case, I asked, "Are you open?" which I've definitely gotten a "not yet" to before and asked to wait a few minutes outside, but this time the hostess just gave me a "What do you think?" condescending look. Not a great first impression. Maybe not place someone like that to greet customers. She continued to gesture with her facial expressions and nods a few times to tell me to go grab a seat outside with a bit of an attitude. So checked in to do my reviews as usual and noticed her demeanor changed 180 degrees which was a bit relieving but disappointing. The waiter and food were excellent. We got crepes and eggplant rigatoni. They had high chairs. Unfortunately they didn't have a diaper changing table in either bathroom and that was quite a challenge to change my unwieldy baby on the hard floor. Overall, I would say very elegant, great food and service overall. Maybe have a friendlier, less snarky hostess greet the customers as it really taints the rest of the experience there and makes me never want to come again even though the food is excellent. And a diaper changing table would be ideal but maybe it's meant to be for older kids or more of an elegant space for adults. Thanks for having our family there.

Dia N.

Yelp
We picked this place simply because they could accommodate a large party. However, it was one of those gold mine finds! Food, service, drinks, atmosphere all fantastic! Literally everything was perfect and I can't tell you how many times"OMGs" I heard with every single bite. Everyone loved everything! The focaccia, olives (I hate olives and loved these) pizza and pasta... it was all perfect!
