Where to Catch the Best Fish and Chips in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Out in Lincoln Heights are the Brewery Artists Lofts, where hundreds of creatives reside in live-work spaces in the former Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery. Barbara’s isn’t just for the residents, it’s for anyone to come in and enjoy a pint or glass of wine with their excellent fish and chips. Barbara’s are served with a side of coleslaw, za’atar fries, and a spicy remoulade sauce." - Mona Holmes

Where to Order Manhattans in LA in 2024 | Eater

"The Brewery Arts Complex in Lincoln Heights is known for its art walks, but you can grab an imbibable beauty at the on-site bar. Rotating exhibits from Brewery artists adorn the walls, and other resident creators can often be found at the tables or on bar stools. For maximum comfort and warmth, pair your Angel’s Envy Manhattan with the poutine; both are flavorful, rich, and make for excellent winter comfort dining." - Vox Creative

Good place to kill time in between my doctor appointments at USC. Drinks were good and so was the food.

Google
This review is specifically for the kitchen. Do better. The food is mediocre at best. Old, half rotten salads, brown avocado.. is extremely common. The hummus is so bland it tastes like cardboard. The burgers and fries are extremely salty. The artichoke dip is soupy. They often run out of ingredients or the oven is down... I could go on.. The beer selection, atmosphere and people can make up for so much.. The kitchen needs to get their act together.. asap.

Went in for a drink to watch the Dodger game. Ended up celebrating with strangers when the dodgers came back against the Rockies. 😎 The spot is hidden in the back but super cool to walk into a warehouse location and where the train used to pass through. Staff was very friendly and plenty of parking

Met up with some friend here. The fish was so good, and fries were good. Everyone enjoyed their food and they have a great variety of beers. I like pineapple drinks, so the aloha was very tasty. The prices are a bit much for what you are getting. I would go back but maybe during like a happy hour?

This brewery makes for a great post-climb treat! Me and some coworkers came to hang out here after rock climbing at the Post which is a 3 min walk away. You order at the bar and they give you a number to place at your table. They had a good variety of beers to choose from but I just got food. I had the fries chicken sandwich. Value wise its just okay but the chicken was mostly breading. Each bite was juicy and flavorful though.

For over 20 years, Barbara's has been my haunt. Let's be honest, the food isn't the draw it once was (thanks to that ownership change). But what this place does have is something you can't bottle: an incredible vibe, amazing people, and bartenders that are pure gold. The atmosphere is chill and welcoming, a true neighborhood gem. It's the kind of place where you can unwind after a long day, catch up with friends, or just enjoy some great company. And speaking of great company, let me tell you about the bartenders. Alexia anf Jackei are, hands down, the nicest and most attentive bartenders I've ever encountered. They radiates positive energy, truly cares about the customers, and goes above and beyond. The kind of integrity you don't often see... not serving a dish because of a kitchen error. That's the kind of care that keeps people coming back. Then there's Cory, the absolute rockstar who keeps everything running like a well-oiled machine. He's the reason the whole operation flows so smoothly. Barbara's is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. It's a place where you feel at home, thanks to the amazing people behind the bar.

Google
Really enjoyed my stop at Barbara's. I wanted a quick bite while in the area and they did not disappoint. After perusing their menu I chose the poutine with ancho chicken. This was the best combination of nord des lignes and sur de la frontera. I really enjoyed it with the porter I ordered and found the whole meal to be reasonably priced. If you're into sports, they've got you covered with multiple TVs. I will be back to check out more of the brews and explore the menu. Check this place out!

We stopped in for an afternoon beer on a hot day and they have Pliny the Elder on tap! Cool art space that’s been around for a while! Dogs welcome on the patio and there’s cool ac inside. Next time lunch for sure!

Yelp
Came here with friends strictly during happy hour on a Friday. Other gatherings were going on, so the place was noisy. You have to go to the bar and order a drink and food which took time and not convenient. We had the nachos, chicken wings, tomatoes on bread, mozzarella cheese sticks, fries and falafels. Of them all, I'd recommend the nachos, wings (can be spicy) and fries. Free parking on the lot. Establishment is way in the back from the street. The eerie joker pics on the walls threw me off. Nice tall Christmas tree by the bar. Place was packed which was clearly popular. Outside seating available. I didn't have any booze and only tried the appetizers. Sorry, but the ambience is not my cup of tea.

Yelp
A couple things you should know about this place. 1- it sits in the middle of artist's lofts. Parking outside the gate so be prepared for a short walk. 2- their full menu does not affect itself until late afternoon. Up to that time is their "brunch" menu (SO! No pizza during brunch) 3- seating inside and a couple patio seats open also We had/shared their club sandwich with twice fried french fries. It was actually pretty good. They have an extensive IPA beer selection and a few wine calls. Dimly lit on the inside but livable. Priced right nothing more than $20 for your meal. Would I go back? Well, maybe, if I'm in the area. Update: It was a BLT we had NOT a club sandwich. I stand corrected Mr. Owner

Yelp
Almost a 5 star but it's difficult to order food and drinks. Customer service was sucky but I did like the good vibes of this place. Music was great, loved the location because there was plenty of parking. The drinks and food were amazing too bad service was not. I might come back knowing that service was not there.

Yelp
We stopped at Barbara's for a quick bite to eat and a drink after leaving the climbing gym, and they did not let us down. They served a more sophisticated take on the tuna melt. I would love to return and try more of the menu items. BB

Yelp
It' hidden but in safe area. The food / brunch selection was good, have a nice craft beer selection and fill bar.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and this is a great spot for a casual hangout or for groups! The drinks are reasonably priced especially for the area, they have good appetizers that are very shareable and even when it's busier the service has been pretty fast! The bar tenders I've spoken with have all been very friendly as well. Parking is also really easy with a lot of spots available, would definitely recommend checking this out!

Yelp
The beer was cold a refreshing, nice med/dark Bar area is dark and moody, for sure. Plenty of outside seating, natural shade and breeze on a hot day

Yelp
This was a nice, chill bar to hang out with friends. We had an after work hangout and everyone had a good time. There was a good variety of beer on tap for about $8-12 each depending on what you get. We had a group of 10 and ordered 2 orders each of the Buffalo wings, nachos, mozzarella sticks, poutine. It was pretty much standard bar finger food. The nachos were a big hit with the group and I really enjoyed the poutine. There was plenty of parking options. When you first turn in, there are parking spots right away in the first area but there are arrows pointing you in further. You can keep driving down into the second (middle) and third lot (closest to the bar and their main parking lot). Overall, we had a fun time and this is definitely a good place to go for some after work beers.

Yelp
I ordered Tofu as an add-on to my bowl and all I got is 5 cubes of tofu for $5!! When I told the bartender that I paid $5 for 5 blocks he just doubled down and said "yeah, I asked and it only comes with 5 pieces"??? This establishment is absolutely dead too, I can see why no one is eating there. So if you're coming here for a cultural experience it's a tourist trap and if you're coming here for food you're getting robbed!

Yelp
My coworker recommended this place. The vibe was dark and boring. The bartender was dry. There was no customer service . The drinks were strong and the bathrooms were decent . I wouldn't come back

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! Great selection of beers and awesome service. Stan was a very knowledgeable bowl bartender and was playing great music next time I will definitely be trying the food since I've heard so many great things about it. It's a great space with a good vibe.

Yelp
Great beer list and the food is pretty solid. Good price and nice location, just parking sucks.

Yelp
The Detroit style pizza that is served on Sundays is delicious the christ is caramelized and crispy on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside. The cheese is thick as it should be and the sauce is thick ,chunky and fresh .

Yelp
This place is a gem to the Lincoln Heights/Boyle Heights community! Great food and great beers! Barbara is a great community partner to our run club and gives us our first beer on the house when we run there. Of course, we pay it back through ordering food. I've had everything there. You just can't go run. Most recently I had their tuna melt. Ohhh man was that amazing!

Yelp
This place holds a lot of memories for me! This is actually where my husband asked me out on a date yearssss ago and now we're married today! But I digress. Barbara's is CHILL. We love coming here bc there's always seating, the environment is open and spacious, and everything is reasonably priced. We never have to worry about competing for seats or whatnot when we come here as just the two of us or if we're celebrating a birthday and inviting 15-20 people. My husband is a beer guy, while I'm more into cocktails and I think they have a fair offering of both (as well as food or sharable apps). It's a little tucked away, which might be why we don't see as many people here on a Friday night as we do at other bars, but I love love love that! Also, the parking is plentiful and free. :)

Yelp
Came here for some St Patrick beer and we were blown away! My beloved order the Irish Stew and I had the tuna melt on marbled rye- to our surprise the food was actually very good! The beer selection was plentiful and I enjoyed the Irish Stout and of course an Irish Car Bomb! This place is grand- good food, ample beer selection and plenty of free parkin

Yelp
Unpretentious and unassuming watering hole with a pub feel. There is a simple yet inclusive menu for food. The full bar has some seasonal items and a good assortment of craft brews including cider sometimes. The crowd is filled with regulars and members of the artist community present. You may also find other locals sometimes and patrons. Parking is unassuming and it is shared with the residents of the community. The relaxed nature is what makes this place so special.

Yelp
Oh, where do I even begin with this hidden gem of a bar restaurant in Los Angeles? Barbara's At The Brewery is my favorite bar in LA. From the moment I step inside, I'm awe struck by the most attractive staff I ever laid eyes on. These marvelous creatures seem to have been plucked from the pages of a magazine, but don't let their good looks intimidate you! It was as if they had known me for years! They have great taste in music, I love the mix of punk, goth, and underground. The Buddha Bowl with tofu is a flavor sensation, and The Other Burger is one of my favorite veggie burgers in LA. The salads are crisp, the fries are tasty, and they mix good drinks! Don't forget to check out the artwork that showcases the vibrant creativity of the community. Take a moment to appreciate the art on the walls, it is all from talented local artists in the community. Barbara's is more than just a bar and restaurant. It's a community hub, a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. When I find myself there in the late mornings, sipping on a cup of coffee, I would strike up conversations with the regulars, sharing unique stories and connections. Whether you're sipping on a refreshing drink, enjoying the music, or admiring the beautiful art, Barbara's At The Brewery offers a complete sensory experience. It's a place where food, music, and local art blend to create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that leaves me feeling inspired and uplifted.

Yelp
I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by this hipster meets Blade Runner brewery bar restaurant. It's a true hidden gem indeed. The drinks were cheap and the food was good, a lot of people frequent so there's plenty of eye candy if you know what I mean and the service is as on pint as the eye candy. The decor is modern and futuristic, with nods to both steampunk Blade Runner franchise and hipster culture. As for the food, the flavors were bold and the presentation was spot on. My only criticism would be that the portions were a bit small for my liking. Nonetheless, this place is definitely worth a visit. All in all a dope spot

Yelp
Great place to grab a beer in Arts District if you want ample parking. Good beer selection and plenty of seating! Make sure to turn onto Moulton Ave NOT 21ST street! My GPS had me go down 21st which is a dead end.
google avatar

Max T.

Yelp
Shhhh, it's a secret spot. But if you know, you know what to order. My fave? The fried chicken sammy. It's unlike any other. Familiar names cover the modest menu; burgers, fries, nachos, fish &chips, etc., etc... But none of it prepared in the boring way you might expect. So yeah, shhhh...
google avatar

Yelp
Love Barbra's! Great food and drinks and a low key place to hang in the middle of LA. It's a hidden gem. Plenty of room, a huge draft selection and easy parking (gps will take you to a place where you have to walk a bit but there is parking next to the establishment so you need to drive into the brewery on Moulton Ave. through a gate that looks intimidating but just drive through and Barbra's is straight ahead.) The owner, Ross, is warm and friendly!

R G.

Yelp
Food was delicious. We tried so many different dishes and enjoyed them all. Lots of craft beers to choose from. Ambiance was great.

Yelp
Decent food for reasonable price! Vibes and service are great as well worth coming for the happy hour!

Randall G.

Yelp
Service was just ok for a lunch. Order at the bar. Bring your food to your table. That's it. Bus your own water. Food was solid. I got the fish & chips. Fish was cooked really well. Not my favorite batter but it was crispy and flavorful. Not traditional. Slaw was a little bland. Aioli was a unique flavor. Don't forget to ask for malt vinegar if that's how you like it. They dont bring it to you and they won't ask if you want it, it they have it. Eat it with at this joint otherwise the dish is missing acid. -4 but better than a 3.
google avatar

Yelp
reliable tasty food and drinks, the social center of the Brewery. Nothing particularly innovative but it'll hit the spot without breaking the bank. More of a bar than a restaurant but it's also the only game in town if you don't want to leave the Brewery complex.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
Great ambiance and I was looking forward to a drink and some food. However, the person behind the bar ignored me then lectured me on how I needed to be at the bar not 5 feet away at a table. She proceeded to put her fingers all over the drink and charged me $25 for the well Bloody Mary. Needless to say the vibe was gone and I paid for the drink and left it untouched and walked out. She's doing me a favor? I'm the customer and my experience here was disgraceful. I was probably over charged as well. Maybe the owner will read this and speak to the woman with dark hair about customer service.

Yelp
Love this place, it's a nice bar/restaurant that is easy to walk to if you live in the neighborhood. Food is super tasty and drinks are strong and well done. The staff are chill and nice and always cool, if you are cool. It's a low key bar and not a stuck up crowd. Wings and fish and chips always on point.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Horrible experience!!! My wife and I sat down at the bar for 20 minutes and no one took the time to even greet us! If it was self serve then I understand, but we weren't even told hello. The bartender seemed to not care that we were there. We were super excited to have lunch here because of all the positive reviews. We were very shocked by our experience.

Pearl M.

Yelp
1-7-24 poor service. Waitress was rude when asked about progress of chicken wings. Stated had no manager and worked independently. Does not know how to treat customers. Sorry. Barmaid. The shorter one.

Yelp

Yelp
barbara's at the brewery | lincoln heights, los angeles | $$ | 3.8/5 a brewpub with good food, sign me up! barb's is a casual brewpub that serves a great selection of craft beers on tap as well as various breakfast/brunch items. they also have a full bar! came here at around 10:30am with a couple of friends as a mini celebration. they were in the midst of switching between breakfast and lunch items. got a little coffee while we waited for the kitchen to open at 11am! blt ($11) |3.8/5 perfectly toasted sourdough! hot take of the day: i think their bacon was too crisp which made the bacon less oily, but also made it less savory in a way as i felt like the sandwich itself was a little bland and dry despite being smothered in roasted garlic aioli. tomatoes and lettuce were fresh, but just something was off with the entire sandwich composition. mozzarella sticks ($7) |3.8/5 cheese pull worthy. this mozzarella stick has more of a thicker crust that encases the stringy cheese. not a big mozzarella stick fan but i enjoyed these. notable mention! the fries ! i enjoyed their thick cut fries a lot! others pictures (i didn't taste them so no rating) fried chicken sandwich ($12) fish and chips ($15) servers/bartenders were very friendly! happy hour from 3-7pm. ample shared free parking in the lot outside. i like how there are indoor and a small outdoor seating. also a great place to get a morning beer if you're into that.
google avatar

Yelp
Food tasted above average but not amazing. The burger I think cost $15, very small for the price I thought. Also got the nachos with added ancho chicken, that was a good portion but tasted average. A bit lacking in flavor i thought. The buffalo wings were good. The best thing I had might have been the fried pickle spears. They were surprisingly crunchy.

Yelp
I have been coming to this estalishment for over 11 Years in different capacities, and I absolutely adore this restaurant. It's great for Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner and the Brunch on the weekends is delicious as well. Keep an eye out for the specials, they are always Bomb, And the beer selection is always fresh and offers variety of all sorts. I personally love gathering friends here for pregame drinks before a night out on the town. The community is welcoming and the vibes are always special.

Yelp
After the official farewell party at USC, we re-gathered at Barbara's with a selection of folks for extended chatting and some typical bar food and a bunch of drinks. Uber or dedicated driver mandatory for some. The place is what it is, not better and not worse, but that exactly served very well for the very informal occasion. Some people that we expected accidentally crashed the wrong but much larger party before finding their way to our gathering. PREVIOUS REVIEW: The closest and most relaxed hide-out hangout location near the USC hospitals is the most ideal place for a quick happy hour drink or bite. The interior is less artsy than in the past and has gotten away from the sofa ambience which is a bit unfortunate but allows for more tables. The drinks are unlimited, the atmosphere artsy, the food reasonable without claim to be fancy.

Yelp
What a great Bar, super cool industrial vibe and really friendly and attentive bartender. Great vibe overall.

Yelp
Barb's got the best foods and the staffs are amazing! We love Cory, Antone and the boss, Ross, who took over the place from Barbara. They are warm, awesome people and have great recommendations if you need some ideas on what yummy things to eat and drink. Barb's also a great place to meet fellow artists too while enjoying beautiful food and drinks. Lots of lovely vegan and vegetarian options too and good coffee! I highly recommend and will be back :) even after my artist residency at The Brewery!

Marisa S.

Yelp
Don't order food here, it's a bar not a restaurant. They will take forever and people after you will get their food. I waited over an hour and I'm still waiting.

Yelp
Holy hell Thursday nights are amazing!! Excellent service & cocktails from Beeve. Not only can she recommend killer IPA's she also makes a wicked cocktail. Looking forward to Aloha Friday's!!!

Yelp
The cafe is open to the public!! Good strong coffee and matcha, nice open atmosphere with a tasteful retro-rock playlist. And a patio for dogs! A great addition to the Lincoln Heights food and drink scene.

Yelp
Amazing food such a hidden gem. Best burger I have ever had. Highly recommend.Basic Burger

Yelp
Great local spot with an epic beer selection and solid bar food. As other reviews have stated this spot is as unpretentious as it gets. Knowledgeable bartenders, solid service, and located in the Brewery Artist Lofts so the vibe of the building is very unique. Chill spot, great tunes, worth checking out.
google avatar

Yelp
I love aloha Friday theme! Pbr and a whiskey shot special. Bartender Beav brought Hawaiian leis for everyone and was all dressed up. So cute! Such a good time with friends. Good spot for food and drinks and love therapy Thursday's!
google avatar

Julio V.

Yelp
First time visiting this place for drinks and I was underwhelmed. The beer selection was ok, looked like they had run out of a lot and it wasn't even late on a Friday. At least they had a full bar. The music was good at first but got stale. The ambience was also stale. At least they had lots of seating! Maybe I'll come back for the food one day.
google avatar

Brandon L.

Yelp
I met a couple of school friends here and 3/4 of them got lost. Barbara's is hidden within these industrial looking buildings, but the yellow paint gives it away, located under a staircase. Hope that helps. :) Food: I ordered the ponzu chicken tacos and the side of fries. They tacos were tasty and I liked the use of sesame seeds and a generous slice of avocado. The diced chicken was covered in a ponzu sauce that also was tasty, but on the salty side. It comes with a few chips and a side of salsa which I should've used more on the tacos. The salsa helped dampen the saltiness of the tacos, so I suggest using the salsa with the ponzu chicken tacos. The selection of beers is excellent and the bartender allowed us to sample some of them. Ambiance/Service: We came around lunch time on a Friday and the bar was packed. There are ample tables and a nice patio one table outside that accommodated myself and 6 others. The servers rotate through and kept our table clear of finished plates and serving trays. I'd come back. It's a great place to sit down and enjoy beers. The menu is bar food, so keep your expectations low.

Antonio G.

Yelp
Love this place. The staff is super cool and food is pretty good. Killer chicken sandwich!! The theme nights are awesome. Pirate night is one of my favorite!
