The 22 Restaurants That Turned Us Into Dedicated Regulars in 2018 | Bon Appétit

"A popular suburban steakhouse where reservations are required and portions are generous in a high-quality way; while steaks carry a strong local reputation, the grilled swordfish and robust sides—roasted sweet potatoes, Brussels with bacon, and a skillet mac and cheese suitable as an entrée for two—are equally compelling." - ByThe Bon Appétit Staff

I just had my wedding in the area this past weekend & have to give Barbarie’s a shout out for their part in making it so great! From the rehearsal dinner to the “after party” to a little family brunch the day after the wedding, everything was phenomenal. The food & drinks were amazing! What especially stood out to us was their team. Everyone was so kind, helpful, organized & truly went above & beyond to make each event perfect. They are pros at what they do & everyone was so impressed. Jamie helped us plan everything & was super communicative. Everything turned out better than we could have imagined!

Google
Easy to sum up, a $15 meal at a $30 price tag. The rolls were so hard & lousy I'd have been ashamed to have put them on the table. My wife's salad they hid all the lousy lettuce on the bottom. A $21 salad should be excellent, not sub par. No joke the $14 chicken salad at eaten park is far better. My $29 for a sandwich with a fancy name. Again I've had better sandwiches for $15. More than once we were waiting on our waitress & we could see her standing outside the kitchen just talking to other employees. If we are ever in the area again the place is definitely on our never again list.

Google
We hosted a surprise birthday party here and everything was flawless! The organization of the party, food was great, the service was exceptional. I've never had an easier experience setting up a party, it's the perfect place! Jamie was so accommodating setting up all the details, very responsive with amazing customer service. On the day of the party, Randy was our host and I was so impressed with his kindness, attention to detail and fun Spirit we had a great day! Thank you all!

Beautiful resturant with amazing service! Everything we had was absolutely great!

Google
Not going to lie, I checked out the reviews here before I went and they had me worried. I ordered the skirt steak and changed the fries into brussel sprouts. I ordered medium rare. It came out perfect. And very fast. Great drinks menu as well. No regrets. Nice work.

Google
I grew up in this neighborhood but surprisingly have never tried this place! But I'm very glad I did as the food was excellent. The steaks are very well cooked and flavorful and I found the other dishes (french onion soup and fried burrata) to be equally as delicious. The service and ambiance of the restaurant are also great! Solid spot to take out family or for a date. Will be back!

My fiancé and I went to Black Angus tonight to celebrate getting an apartment for our growing family. We went to the bar for happy hour which was amazing. Then the host/manager took us to our table and our server, Randy, came over right away to take our order and see if we needed anything. We come here for all of our celebrations and to have a great date night. Randy took such great care of us. When we come back we will be asking for him. He was very nice and knowledgeable. We will be back soon! Thank you Randy!!

Google
This place gets it right on most aspects. The owner greets you at the door and service was attentive and quick. The food overall was good. The steak salad was delicious and so was fhe sweet potato soup. The ribs were not my favorite at the meat fell of the bone but was a little over cooked and tough. I am also more of a Kansas City style sauce guy as well. Overall, well worth the visit.

Yelp
Strip Steak was great! Eggplant starter was fantastic. Service at bar a little slow, but they were BUSY on a Saturday night.

Yelp
Service is great but you would think a steak house would know how to cook a steak. Been back multiple times and ordered the porterhouse. Came out raw every time. You would think an ala cart $60 steak would be amazing, everything but. If you ask for it to be cooked more you get an attitude and it seems to just go into a microwave. Ordered wings the next time at a dinner event and they came out so over cooked you couldn't eat them. So overcooked the bones were breaking.

Yelp
My NY Sirloin Strip Steak was melt in your mouth delicious with perfect seasoning and flavor. I had the 3 course special with French Onion soup which was also perfectly seasoned with just the right ratio of broth, onion, bread and melty cheese. 10 out of 10. Would definitely come back every week if we lived closer. Our server, Randy, was also on point. We sat out on their patio and he was friendly and attentive without being overly so and gave wonderful suggestions. It's refreshing finding a diamond in a sea of mediocrity.

Yelp
Mike W was our waiter and he was awesome! Thank you! Visited here during their happy hour time where certain apps are $6 and it's -$2 off drinks. Really loved the fried pickles. They had a great crunch. The Philly Cheesesteak eggs rolls had a horseradish dipping sauce. So good! I ordered the blood orange margarita and it was spicy! So beware! We ended up getting the dinner meal for $27 which included a salad or soup, meal, and dessert. I really enjoyed the cook on the my meat. Overall I'm really happy with the service, prices, vibe, and experience! I haven't been in a long time so this was a nice experience!

Yelp
Great place for a casual dinner or a classic steakhouse experience. Their Sunday brunch is also top notch!! Service is always on point.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We got the surf N turf. It was perfection and hit the spot! The waitress was friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself was busy. We didn't wait long to be seated. It was cozy inside. Great date night spot.

Yelp
The food was wonderful and our server was a blast. We came with a group of friends for dinner. I had not been here for a good two years and it exceeded my expectations. One of our friends confused the mules bc I guess they offer different types and he graciously explained the difference, where they originated from and then took back the mule she didn't like and brought her another one for her to try. We ordered a few different things everything was delicious. The place was pretty packed even in the bar area. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Visited today for a simplified brunch group gathering where we had our own special selection of menu choices. Our server Daniel was very attentive and did a great job getting our orders properly entered and delivered in a timely manner. I personally had the Mediterranean cod over risotto. The cod portion was of a good size, and more importantly properly prepared, very moist and flavorful. The risotto was nicely prepared, considering so many of my group of 16 people seem to have made this selection. The warm brownie with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream was of course wonderful.

Yelp
Great steak, had the tomahawk for two, cooked exactly medium rare, but i did think they let the rib cap get a little too charred- not enough to lower a star. We tried all the steak sauces and they were great. We appreciate the amazing service, and how quickly the kids meal came out. Amazing place, always consistently good. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The manager during lunch on 5/15 did many food safety violations can lead to foodborne illnesses, cross contamination and health problems for customers. I witnessed him pick up a paper off the floor then place his thumb in the water carafe. I saw him pick at his *nails (update: fingertips) and then place his hands on top of a clean side plate and place it on a table 3 different times. I witnessed him clear dirty plates from a table then handle food from the kitchen. Not once did he wash his hands. When trying to address his violations, he turned his back and walked away, leaving my only recourse to reporting the issues to the restaurant inspectors office. These were not my only issues with this restaurant. I agree with another reviewer about the food quality and the experience does not reflect their current star rating. 5/18 Update. While walking from my hotel to the main road, I was approached by a older, bald man wearing a colorful shirt. He asks me if I was the one who left a bad review. Unapologetically, I said yes. This guy starts to cuss and berate me, calling me a f**king liar, and many more colorful names not fit to be written here. He stated that manager in the review doesn't have fingernails. As a man that honors honesty and integrity, I am updating my review to address my (possible) mistake.

Yelp
Barbarie's Black Angus Grill is an amazing steakhouse in Danbury! I went for the first time recently and loved it. Here the scoop on this restaurant... I would definitely recommend calling and making a reservation, especially if you're planning to go on a weekend night. I went on a Friday night and it was packed! Though the parking lot is fairly large, it was completely full when I went and I had to park at the hotel across the street. To drink I ordered the Apple Cider Sangria, which was one of their seasonal drink specials. It was really good! I then got the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp for an appetizer (also a special) and the shrimp were delicious! For my meal I chose the Beef Short Ribs, which were topped with a Cabernet and Vegetable Reduction. These were so tender and flavorful! The sides included mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts, though I substituted broccoli for the Brussels. I did notice the mashed potatoes were a little thick and not as creamy as I had expected them to be, but they were still really good. For dessert I ordered the Creme Brûlée, which was amazing! A fairly big portion though, I couldn't eat all of it. The server was super friendly and attentive, and the food came out surprisingly quick considering how crowded it was. Overall I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Food was very flavorful. The wait staff is definitely enough to drive an hour for their wonderful service.

Yelp
We came here for for my wife's birthday dinner. We were overly satisfied with our experience. Located off Newton Rd in Danbury. Lots of parking. Inside and outdoor seating is available. All the staff we interacted with were fantastic, especially our server. Lots of great decor, especially the case of steaks. Very friendly and inviting atmosphere. There's a nice bar area which include tv for baseball and other sports. The food was amazing. I started with an arugula Caesar salad. It's not on the menu but my server was kind enough to substitute the lettuce for arugula. We then moved to the Tomahawk steak for 2. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. Every bite was soft and melted in my mouth. They cut it so well from the bone there was minimal meat after they played it. We ordered 4 sauces to go with the steak: horseradish cream, bourbon peppercorn, bernaise, and Barbarie's prime steak. My favorite was the horseradish followed by the Barbarie's steak sauce. We got the brownie a la mode for dessert. Very delicious, still warm so the ice cream was melting on top as it should. Barberie's is my new go to steakhouse for special occasion. Five stars!

Yelp
My family are all regulars here and love it. Food is always perfect and the wait staff are so sweet. Warm lighting and cozy vibes.

Yelp
My husband and I are from Washington State. We have eaten at very expensive steakhouses. Barbarie's exceeded them by far! The food is amazing, the service is stellar, and the ambiance is on spot! If we lived here - would be our steakhouse of choice.

Donna G.

Yelp
Loud.. uncomfortable and truly overrated Oysters were good.. but was not impressed.. it was nothing to rave about.. and the server was so busy you could get her attention

Yelp
This is an amazing steakhouse with great menu items and variety, impeccable service from the staff and great ambiance. I had the skirt steak, arugula salad and fried onion straws and it was fantastic. I sat at the bar on a Tuesday while traveling for business and the food came very quickly, despite the crowd. I hope to return when business brings me back.

Yelp
We enjoyed the shrimp appetizer and the 4 shrimp were of very good size and quality. Their salad with gorgonzola was well proportioned and tasty The then each had one of their before 6pm specials (4oz filet) which was cooked perfectly. Our waiter was Steve and he was friendly and prompt. He accommodated our special requests with a smile. I took my brownie dessert home. Nice comfortable booth. The price was "the best deal in town" and it is true! All in all, a very nice meal

Yelp
Went to Barbaries on Saturday before mother's day with my family. Son started off with the brisket nachos which were very good His entree was ribeye and Brussel sprouts which he loved. His girlfriend had the Atlantic salmon which she also enjoyed very much. My wife had the filet mignon with hot fries which she said were phenomenal. My other son started off with the French onion soup which he enjoyed and then the full rack of ribs and hot fries which he also enjoyed very much. I started off with the fried calamari which was not very good {overcooked}and a rack of ribs which were extremely good and meaty, nice hot fries to go with it. Only drawback was the calamari, must have been a bad night because I have had it before and it's usually good. Randy was our waiter and all I can say is he is a definite asset to Barbaries. We shall return.

Yelp
Always good food and service. Treated well by owner and staff. They remember you which is worth noting.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this place-A++++! I have only been here twice and each time was fantastic. This time we were seated in their back room which gave us lots of privacy and space. The entire layout of the restaurant is nice and modern. You can tell they care about their customers and are extremely friendly and welcoming. When I arrived the manager took the time to welcome me and thank me for coming to dine there. Our waiter for a large group of 6 the other night could not have been better. He was on top of everything from making sure our water was filled to having the table clean, plates cleared and silverware ready for the next course. The entire experience was so positive-there is nothing bad to say. Now the food is the star of course-I do not eat meat and had their tuna entrée which was cooked perfectly and nicely sliced with some nice sides and I had the chopped salad to start which was light and refreshing. We really enjoyed the artichoke dip (which comes with yummy crostini's) and nachos for appetizers we split. Each person who ordered steak with our party (which was everyone else) said it was cooked to perfection and they really enjoyed the sauce options as well which are multiple. One person in our party wanted their steak burnt/crispy on the outside but medium on the inside and it come out perfectly. I look forward to my next visit to this steakhouse--it's nice to know there are still local restaurants that seem to really care about their customers!

Yelp
What a great find. Stopped by for early lunch after a some shopping. We discovered their 4 course - Yes Really - 4 course Prime Time Special - $27. AND NO THEY DID NOT SKIMP ANYWHERE!!! Look at my pics. We were so full we couldn't get to the desert - tiramisu. And they had a nice dessert choice. Anyway our wonderful waiter - AJ- offered to pack it up for us for a midnight snack. Great idea. I have to say we had a great lunch experience from the time we pulled up to the restaurant. We were greeted by a positive happy host to another gentleman who just passing us by and welcomed us. I mean we must have had 3-4 people just welcomed us before we ordered. It felt like we were at a 5 star resort. The restaurant felt very relaxing, upbeat and yet very cozy. The lighting and slightly woody decor gave it that urban steakhouse setting. As we left the staffers were all thankful and my wife and I said to each other as we sat in our car - we'll be back Soon!!

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for awhile. The original plan had been to go to the mall location but at the last minute someone in our party changed it to here. I think our party was like 14 people so we tried damn near everything they had to offer. By far my favorite thing all night was Thai calamari. We had so many people that I only got a few pieces, but I strongly debated ordering it as a meal as well. I wasn't looking for anything over the top heavy so only got a chicken sandwich it was decent and good sized, but pretty standard. My wife loved her lamb entree (as well as the eye candy the waiter was serving all night ), but her Brussels sprouts were over cooked and inedible. I'm not sure exactly what each person thought of their dish, but I didn't hear anyone over the top raving. For a place like this I want to be WOWed and it was pretty standard executions of standard options. Overall it was an ok meal, but I'm not planning on coming back anytime soon.

Yelp
This place was busy on a Tuesday so, making an reservation would be wise. We winged it , this was a after work outing with a big crowd. They were very efficient, friendly , and made sure nobody was forgotten. The food was great minus the Mac and cheese. It was rotini with cheese melted on top. Not my vibe, but the server had no problem removing it from my bill. First time, but I would return. The cocktails did not disappoint.

Amanda M.

Yelp
We just finished up brunch at black angus. Not only were all courses of brunch phenomenal, but Daniel was THE BEST waiter I have ever had. Hands down. He had us laughing from the beginning to the very end. I am a foodie for sure, and this is the first time we have come to this restaurant. We attend brunch many places in the area, but this has been the best. What appeared to be the manager, commented to Daniel about something infront of all customers, that I felt was inappropriate. That is my only negative experience. Daniel deserves a raise, extra vacation time and free drinks and anything else because that man is a god sent. We will returning for sure in the near future but only to be seated with Daniel. Food was 10/10 but Daniel himself was a TEEENNN OUT OF TEEEEEN. Which it was, it delivered.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed an amazing anniversary dinner at Barbarie's. First, The host was incredibly accommodating, as we arrived 30 min early to our reservation. We noticed immediately how crowded the restaurant was-- and I highly recommend making reservations in advance. We decided to splurge on the 30 day aged tomahawk steak for two. It arrived at the table with a deliciously seasoned crust with a perfectly medium, rare center. One of the most amazing steaks we had ever had. Service was friendly and quick. Overall, we were very happy with the evening. It is not the most inexpensive restaurant in the area, but we felt it was well worth the price. We are looking forward to returning soon.

Sherri D.

Yelp
Food was so delicious,,,We enjoyed everything!! The stuffed mushrooms to start...The Ahi Yellow Fin Tuna Entree ! I had the pre fixe, seafood scampi with linguini.. A great salad, with the perfect amount of dressing. The best gorgonzola ever.. The Red Sangria, The Service, The Ambience. #The Best!!!

Barbara H.

Yelp
Food is always excellent. Make reservations if you want a table. It is crowded and noisy so don't expect a quiet ambiance.
google avatar

Gwen S.

Yelp
Great value meal. Dine before 6 and a 4 course meal is around 30$. There's an up charge for the French onion soup, signature salad and filet. It was worth it the extra 6 dollars. The French onion was great (though salty) and honestly the salad had very little dressing. The Steaks were cooked amazing and were very nice as medium rare and cut like butter. The wait staff was very attentive and our waitress (Louisa) was really nice and made sure we had everything we needed. The vibe of the place would be great for a date or work.

Scott D.

Yelp
When a steak is ordered medium and it's brought out extra rare and the best you can do is throw it back on the grill and charge full price you're telling us that a)you don't know how to cook a steak and b)you don't know how to run a restaurant. All was going well until the steak part. When you're a steak house that's the time to shine. Here's a tip, because you didn't get a monetary one, either cook a fresh steak(who wants a reheated $50 steak) or automatically take off or discount the item on the bill. When an error is made at a table not only is that persons dinner ruined but so are the dinners of the people dining with them. A simple 'sh*t happens' doesn't cut it. Get a staff that knows how to cook a steak; before you make excuses medium and rare rare aren't even in the same vicinity on a touch test; and get a more customer favorable policy when the staff makes a mistake. We're living in a time where no one wants to be seen as a 'Karen' and I can guarantee that plenty of steaks come out of that kitchen cooked wrong that you never hear about.
google avatar

Cheyenne C.

Yelp
Visited for Sunday brunch. Their menu includes brunch cocktails, a starter, entree, and dessert for $38! I had the Bellini as a drink, however my refill was pure Prosecco. I got the bruschetta as a starter and the chicken pesto as my entree. Both had great flavor and were good portion sizes. I finished off with some tiramisu. Service was attentive and good. The value was really great in my opinion. I'd come back for brunch again!
google avatar

Joanne B.

Yelp
Good food and service. Offerings for those who aren't huge meat eaters. But the star here is steak. Expensive.
google avatar

Georgette R.

Yelp
Food was really good. Service was quick and super friendly. Sat outside and it was warm enough didn't feel like we were on an outdoor patio

Ralston Chaves C.

Yelp
Like to thank staff for putting up with my large party. Food was delicious steak was so juiiiiiicy and had great atmosphere in the tent mint chocolates there went so hard 10/10 must try again

Jason S.

Yelp
Went for an early(Saturday) Valentine's Day dinner and we opted for the tomahawk dinner, and it came with all the trimmings and was prepared to perfection. Our server was polite and did not buzz around our table too much. I left very happy and even had some fantastic leftovers. Great dinner Barbarie's!!

Eric B.

Yelp
First, was greeted by a genuine host, the guy was friendly and inviting despite being busy. Was promptly seated(had reservations and were 10 mins early) and swiftly was brought waters and asked if we wanted a cocktail while we were waiting for another couple to join us. When the other couple joined our server Kim appeared within seconds and took another cocktail order and brought a little bread and butter while we chit chatted and the evening started out great, I ordered the bacon off the appetizer menu and it did not disappoint. 3 of us took advantage of the prime time dinner menu and everything was delicious, I ordered the strip steak and I know its not the 45 dry aged ones off the regular menu but it was still far better than an Outback or Texas Roadhouse steak. everything was outstanding from ample parking, being graciously greeted and perfect meal, at what I think was a steal of a price!!!!!!! Perfect meal and ambiance, cant wait to go back again! Thank-You Black Angus you gained a new customer!
google avatar

Lisette R.

Yelp
The service is fantastic, but the food...not so much. My signature salad was OK but had an overly vinegary and unbalanced dressing. My boyfriend ordered the pork chop special, which was overcooked and came with the worst Brussels sprouts I've ever tasted; mushy and bland. The mashed potatoes were nothing special. He did enjoy his salad. The beef barley soup was decent. My son ordered the kid's steak dinner, which smelled like the meat was starting to go rancid. For dessert we ordered a brownie, which was nuked to the point of becoming chalky and inedible. We will not return.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
The best in Danbury bar none... The food, service and the atmosphere is topshelf. In Danbury there is no place that's going to beat BBA
google avatar

Russ L.

Yelp
They make a very good crab cake appetizer.... their ribs have disappointed me more times than I can say I have them delivered to my home once a month or so and one out of two times they're extremely dry and inedible.... My father likes their chicken wings..... They also make a decent beef dip sandwich
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
My family reserved a table for dinner to celebrate Mother's Day and a birthday. Our waitress (Jade) was friendly, eager to offer recommendations, and ready to answer any of our menu questions.. The restaurant was clean and we loved the music in the background. All of our entrees were delicious and cooked to perfection. The sides were generously portioned, however we were disappointed that some of our entrees did not have any sides included considering the price. Jade recommended the Barbarie's prime steak sauce and the horseradish cream sauce to compliment our steak, both of which were outstanding. Their dessert menu looked delicious, we had to pass considering we already had treats at home but we would love to go back to give their dessert a try.

Ryan W.

Yelp
Best burger on the entire East Coast! Service (bartender) is slow/unaware and impersonal but I really don't care as long as they put out fantastic food. Highly recommended and can't wait to go back, maybe not sit at the bar next time. lol
google avatar

Tamara G.

Yelp
I've been coming to Barbarie's for years and the food is always delicious. They have some of the best bacon in the state hands down no debate at all. It's thick cut and very well seasoned. For an Appetizer I had the grilled sea scallop and pineapple. This is my favorite appetizer on their menu. It has grilled large sea scallops huge chunks of grilled pineapple generous chunks of their absolutely delectable bacon and an edamame purée. It's more than enough to share for two people and you'll want to keep eating it forever. For an entree I had one of their Valentine's Day specials it was filet medallions, heart shaped lobster ravioli (which were really delicious) and half a lobster tail. The sauce it came in was good I just don't remember what kind it was. The steak was perfectly tender and the lobster tail was fresh and also very tender. Barbaries is a must try if you're in Danbury!

Yelp
Great food. Great friendly staff. Definitely will be back, happy with the menu selection and large variety of beverages.

Marie H.

Yelp
we loved this place. There was a great selection of food. It was all prepared. Well, the waiter was fantastic. We will definitely be going back.

Matt W.

Yelp
Friday night is date night and we were in Danbury. I looked up best steakhouses and found Barbarie's at the top of the list. One 5 star review after the other. Gave it a shot... Totally lived up to expectations. We were hungry and the starter - scallops with pineapple & bacon came out quickly. It was a unique combo that was perfect. Randy our server was outstanding - truly knew the menu, tweaked the meal to be in line with my health coaches recommendations (no sauce on steak & steamed broccoli) and bacon on the side. Wife had the burger which was also excellent . When the steak came out it was exactly as I wanted - and Randy was there making sure it was prepared as I like it. Even though it might sound like it would be a dry steak it didn't lose any flavor and had a good charred taste with a soft pink but not undercooked center. Both the manager and owner stopped by to say hi. The atmosphere is similar to Texas Roadhouse, complete with TV's set to the NFL network, but the meal and experience was excellent. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Christian T.

Yelp
Off the charts good! That tomahawk steak included two salads. (It's for two people). It was 100 bucks and worth every dime. I couldn't eat half of it. My wife loved your lobster. The desserts my bread pudding was excellent! I couldn't finish half of that ether. My wife's crème brûlée was delicious Our waiter, "D" could not have been better! My gin martini with blue cheese stuffed olives was excellent!

Yelp
This place gets really crowded on the weekend. We came here from our hotel which is within walking distance of the Courtyard Danbury. They told us it was a three hour wait! So if you are planning on having something here or want to eat here, definitely call ahead! Fortunately, we were able to get a couple of seats at the bar. The bartenders are fantastic and obviously used to the crowd and the rush. We were able to order food at the bar as well. We decided to just get some appetizers and believe me, their appetizers are for sharing. Everything we got and everything I saw was very generous in the portion size. We decided to get the bucket of wings. They really are served in a bucket. I didn't count how many were in there but there were a lot and honestly were the best wings I ever had. They were buffalo wings but were not drowning in sauce. The sauce was cooked into the wings giving them great flavor without all the mess. I keep thinking about those wings. I wonder if they deliver to Alabama. Lol We also got the spinach artichoke dip which was also generous and served with pita wedges. If you are not a fan of spinach, this is probably not for you because it really has that spinach flavor more than anything else but I really enjoyed it. My friends got the calamari. I don't think I ever saw a bigger bowl of calamari. My friends said it was a little chewy but I also noticed that they ate it all so I think they liked it! The meatball trio looked really good too. Sorry I didn't have room to try that also! Really good food and service. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The owner has to be one of the worst people on this planet. Will stand in the middle of the dining room screaming at his staff! And god forbid your food comes out wrong! He will have no problem yelling at you and telling you there was nothing wrong with it!
