"On a quiet corner among stately townhouses, with flower-bedecked outdoor seating areas, Barbes is a classic French bistro, offering a combination of Moroccan and Parisian fare. Sure there are mussels, a salade Nicoise, and steak frites, but diners will also find tajines, couscous, triangular briwats, and the pillow-shaped chicken pastry called pastilla, prettily criss-crossed with cinnamon and powdered sugar, for the sweetest main courses around." - Robert Sietsema

The atmosphere was amazing! The staff are all very nice and sweet. It made our experience very pleasurable. The French Onion Soup was good. The mediterranean food didn’t really have the typical Mediterranean spices — I’d absolutely come back and try more of the French food.

One of my favorite restaurants in Hoboken. The cocktails are delicious and they have great french fries so it's a great place for drinks and snacks (especially with the live music). The orange sauce and the sweet potato mash in the Magret de Canard really brings out the natural sweetness of the duck meat. The star of every trip for me though is the desserts. The happy affogato is a truly special experience that is a must try for coffee lovers and haters alike. The amaro perfectly bridges the gap between the bitterness of the espresso and the sweetness of the vanilla ice cream to create an entirely new flavor that is simply divine. They also happen to have the best chocolate mousse I've ever had. I like to take a sip of the (melted and mixed) happy affogato, then take a spoonful of the mousse, and then rinse my mouth with water before doing it all over again. A prefect end to a meal.

Google
I love this place, amazing food, great people, and live music, for very affordable prices. We’re in a hurry so we took the shank of lamb for togo, still tasted great even when cold.

Google
Great brunch spot, especially on a nice day when you can sit outside! They have $7 cosmos all day on Sundays, which is a great deal. The French onion soup ($14) is a must-get; covered in delicious, melty cheese. For entrees, the Kefta Tagine (lamb meatballs; $25) was our favorite. The lamb was a bit dry, but it tasted great. The Oeufs Brouilles au Saumon Fume (scrambled eggs with smoked salmon; $20) was fine, but lacked flavor. It could have used some herbs or a sauce.

Google
The couscous was good (and vegetarian), but shawarma was too dry and too plain. It felt like they just boiled chicken for my shawarma and put it on top of lettuce with some sauce. It might pass as a diet meal, but I wanted something delicious. Anyway the atmosphere was really nice. I like their interior and vibe. They have nice live music at weekend's nights.

Google
Service and atmosphere were fine. Food was pretty average. Honestly was expecting better given the reviews, even for a weekday. Escargot didn’t have much flavor, neither did the shrimp (also $17 for four farm-raised shrimp). Duck breast was underwhelming, shawarma was somewhat dry. The rack of lamb was good, but definitely had better. I probably wouldn’t choose to come back here.

Google
Had a great Saturday evening in Barbes - refreshing cocktails, well prepared dish (love the watermelon salad and seafood tagline) and good vibe.

Google
Great little French/Moroccan spot with a very local feel. Many of the folks at the bar were regular locals and the owner+ main server were very attentive. We loved most of the items: the snails were perhaps the only average dish, all else were great. The calamari and the cheese platter stood out the most.

Politia M.

Yelp
Cute little cafe off Washington street. Gives you French and Marrocan vibes. The coffee is much better than any other place around here and they have a nice outdoor space to enjoy it. The staff are friendly and accommodating. A few weeks passed I walked in and realized I was having a bad day and offered me a coffee on the house. Today I ordered the iced cappuccino( $4.5) and a pain of raisin($5.5). It wasn't as sweet and sticky as others and that is actually a good thing for my taste buds!!

Yelp
I've always wanted to try Barbes after trying its sister restaurant in downtown Hoboken. My friend and I met for dinner on a Sunday night and the place was packed with families, dates, and groups of friends. Our waiter was patient as my friend and I took a long time to order. We started off with a lychee martini which was refreshing and sweet. We both ordered the salmon but I was able to sub the tarragon sauce with a mustard sauce. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the sauce was tangy and complemented the other parts of the dish. Would come back here again!

Yelp
The food was delicious however the manager made our party feel incredibly rushed from the moment we got there. We felt uncomfortable as he pressured his staff to rush us.

Yelp
Dined here last Sunday for a cozy little brunch and boy did it deliver! The ambiance was beautiful, and had this European feel to it. The music playing, people chattering in the background added to the appeal. For food, the two of us shared: Eggs and Merguez (5/5) This came with roasted potato wedges, side salad, four links of homemade lamb merguez (sausages) and a two-egg sunny side up. The sausages were so well seasoned, and this made it highly enjoyable. The Moroccan seasoning used dominated the flavors in the best way possible. Pastilla au Lait (5/5) Such an enjoyable dessert with so many textures and fabulous flavors. What a standout! The flaky pastry added a nice crispy textural element and I am beyond surprised how this didn't disintegrate away in that tres leche-esque milk sauce around it. Yummy! My boyfriend asked for some chocolate spread and got nutella served with it, which I have nothing to complain about. Not sure why he did that but getting nutella instead of boring chocolate sauce is such a plus! Loved brunching at Barbes!

Yelp
Barbes is a neighborhood staple since I live so close I usually end up here for a quick weeknight dinner or on the weekend (though you usually will need a resy then). Great spot for French Moroccan food ! My favorite are the hummus with pita , the steak au poivre, and the shrimp couscous. The drinks are also delicious here !

K M.

Yelp
What a cute little space - vibrant and friendly. Reasonably priced wines by the glass and interesting food options too. The Escargots au Beurre were more tasty parsley and garlic than buttery, but done to perfection and good. My standout was the Grilled salmon, lemon tomato basil sauce, mashed potatoes, spinach. The spinach and sauce got raves from everyone! For dessert I had the Pastilla with a sweet milk sauce - wafer thin, crispy and good! Would return readily!

Dewan A.

Yelp
Great spot. 1) If you want a great French-Moroccan restaurant in Hoboken, NJ, this is your spot. 2) I stuck with the usual French items like steak au poivre and pain perdu (French Toast). They were both good. 3) Will come back for their Brunch menu and try some Moroccan items.

Margaret G.

Yelp
Excellent food and great ambience. Wait staff friendly and helpful. Been there several times and will go again.

Stefanie R.

Yelp
Came here on Sunday for brunch around 2pm and was pleasantly surprised to see the restaurant was not jam packed. It was in fact a quiet spot that you can enjoy your conversation in a dim lit dining room with attentive service. We ordered breakfast items such as the omelete fromage, shashuka amount others. My omelet was light, airy , fluffy and delicious. The mushrooms and vegetables inside were not too soft but cooked just right to add enough textures to my dish to compliment the creamy goat cheese. Everyone at the table cleared their plates with happy and full bellies. The presentation of the dishes were pleasing and the prices were decent.

Yelp
Barbès is a terrific local restaurant. Top notch food, featuring a mix of French and Moroccan staples. But the Service is what makes Barbès special. From the moment you walk in, everyone is positive and accommodating. I've been to 3 star Michelin restaurants that aren't as attentive. Every single person there made sure we were happy, glasses full, plates cleared, all with smiles on their faces. Just a super wonderful vibe. Will be back again for sure.

MichiganMan M.

Yelp
Delicious food and the service is usually good as well. Their pastilla is incredible! Beautiful bar and cool fez decor.

Davina F.

Yelp
I came in based on a personal recommendation for date night. There were plenty of seats at dinner time (~6:45 PM) on a Wednesday, although the bar area did get a little crowded for I'm assuming happy hour. Staff was super friendly and attentive for the entire experience. We ordered grilled calamari as an appetizer, date ordered the chicken shawarma, I ordered the chicken entree (Petit Provençal I believe) & then we got baklava for dessert. Everything was great! Only knocking a star because I would've loved a few more potatoes with my meal. They were SO good. I'm glad that this place is now on my radar for future dates. Thank you for a great experience, Barbés!

Yelp
Great way to spend an evening in Hoboken, especially if you are there for the live music offered on certain evenings. Lovely ambiance inside with outdoor dining also available. Menu offers French and Moroccan food. Particularly enjoyed the Mussels Marniere with french fries (Meules and Frites). The chocolate mouse for dessert was one of the best any of us had ever had. Service was a little slow, so just go with the purpose of have a nice relaxing night out and you should enjoy yourself.

Isabelle N.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant last night for my bday. The appetizers were really good (grilled calamari and eggplant dip). We shared a bottle of wine that was listed as $42 but they charged us $58. When I asked the lady, she just said the server was supposed to tell us that the price on the menu was wrong ... which he didn't. That seems like a large price increase for them to not tell us about so I was kind of disappointed but didn't want to make a scene

Erica M.

Yelp
Amazing service and so fun! Definitely plan your next girls night here. We loved the chocolate mouse and the muscles!!!

Darina B.

Yelp
My Favorite Place to eat when in Hobok area! Love the superb staff and highest quality food, ambiance. I also love the live music and just overall energy.

Lyndsie L.

Yelp
Ive eaten here for dinner a few times and enjoy the dishes. Went for brunch this time and enjoyed most of the food!! Mussels in Moroccan sauce was great, salad was refreshing, kefta was a little disappointing-needed more sauce and lamb was overcooked, and mac and cheese was excellent. Staff was friendly and accommodating as always

Hunter D.

Yelp
I'm not surprised that it was empty on a Saturday evening. Barbes sells average to below average food for a high cost. The steak had no seasoning and just came with vegetables and fries for somewhere around $40, I could get much better steak at home or at a different establishment. The ~$38 duck breast was way over cooked and most pieces were completely dry, it also didn't come with any interesting sides. Ended up spending $170 on sub-par food between two people when I could get something far better for less at other restaurants. I would stay away unless you're a fan of overpriced and poorly cooked meals.

Joy Q.

Yelp
This place is super special for French and northern African food! - friendly service - stylish interior - loved the escargots Best I had in the states - steak au poivre A bit disappointing. Flavor was there but the meat it self was subpar - tagine meatball Great flavor

Virgi L.

Yelp
Nice bar with nice lighting and art. Hostess was nice and explained the Moroccan decor, menu and the Bear outside. I was not impressed with what was being offered and just had a dessert with almonds which was not of my liking.

John K.

Yelp
We had an absolutely fabulous meal here. We had the couscous and the tagine and both were out of this world. Each dish could have fed both of us. Service was top notch and super friendly; the interior is very romantic and comfortable; and very reasonably priced for what they serve. This is really a gem of a restaurant in Hoboken.

Olivia N.

Yelp
Overall rating: 3.5 I want to caveat that I went on a Tuesday in April, so maybe the staff was feeling under the weather. It took awhile to order & get water refills. My friend got served a martini in a wine glass which was just weird. I personally thought it was a French-Moroccan place based off the items on the menu, so I thought the falafel-type dish would be good. It was not. I didn't eat it. I don't frequent Hoboken enough to know if this is the norm. But I have no plans on coming back here.

Yelp
I had brunch here on a Saturday a few weeks ago and was really disappointed. I've heard such great things about this spot from friends, but was underwhelmed with both the service and the food. We had a reservation and were promptly seated upon arrival. The restaurant has a cute, quaint ambiance. Feels like you're eating at a cafe in France! We placed our order for two entrees and a shared crepe. The waiter said there might be a short wait for the crepe. However, an hour passed and we never received the crepe or our entrees. No one came to check on us, ask if we needed coffee refills, or give us an update on our food. It was odd, because the restaurant wasn't terribly busy. We finally had to track down our waiter because we had somewhere to be, and he said he would tell the kitchen to start making our entrees so we'd receive them before the crepe. Thankfully we both ordered scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, so it didn't take long. However, if he had given us that option sooner we definitely would've taken it! The scrambled eggs were fine, nothing special. I thought the eggs could've used more seasoning. Thankfully the side salad and fries were pretty filling. Luckily, the crepe was delicious and filled with plenty of rich Nutella, whipped cream, and sliced strawberries. Because I've heard such good things about this spot in the past, I think I'll give it another try in the future.

Indy L.

Yelp
The food was great. We had the mussels with french fries as well as the fattoush salad. Additional we ordered a couple of entrees which were also delicious. I believe because we came on a Friday during the first warm day of the summer, the staff kept giving us the next table's food and the wrong entrees. The manager was super nice about it and comped the food that we didn't receive, and gave us extra fries and cous cous. As a bonus, as someone who doesn't drink alcohol, I appreciated the mocktail options!

Rach S.

Yelp
We enjoyed this restaurant. The host was very friendly. We thought the food was good. The tagine was good value. We were seated close to the band so it was loud. The hummus was a large portion and we were given extra pita.

Genia N.

Yelp
I hate to write this because Barbes used to be one of my favorite spots in town but I feel like things went downhill in the last year or so. Last time I was there they had a huge party inside but kept the reservations in their parklet/outside area. The effort was thrown at the party which left the rest of us with a two hour service where servers walked around asking whose order it was. I understand that the ownership is expanding in spots all over Hoboken (good for them!) but it's sad that they're not maintaining the same quality at the og location. Hopefully this will change because the food and ambiance are very good.

Fancy F.

Yelp
Great drinks and customer service. Perfect for a low key date night. I definitely recommend. Check out my review on IG @the__fancyfoodie

Natalie T.

Yelp
The decor is so fun and enjoyable! The food was amazing, we got the mussels in red sauce and it was our favorite thing. Our main dishes were also super tasty. Unfortunately, our server forgot our fries with our mussels and didn't bring it until it came with our entrees and then he completely forgot about us. We waited about 20 min to catch his attention to get the bill. I would definitely give this place another try because the food was so good, but the service did spoil the experience a bit.

John P.

Yelp
The ambiance is a 5/5, you feel as if you're in a French cafe. As for the food, it is okay. I have definitely had better French and Moroccan food. However, if you want to try something new in Hoboken I would say go for it. The service is not so good, the two times I went they take very long to come to your table. They are friendly though, and gave me a free glass of wine for the long wait time when I was trying to get my bill. One thing that irked me is the menu online. The two times I went, they had different menus when I arrived to the restaurant. Both times I wanted to try their French onion soup only to find out they didn't serve it on both occasions (despite being advertised online). All and all, I would say give it a shot.

Irina M.

Yelp
Been in a restaurant for a first time. Ordered falafel was unusually shaped as burger and was dry as a rock. Lamb kofta was extremely dry as well, even sauce did not help to swallow. Moroccan tea had not enough mint and not really good baclava. The only tasted not bad were traditional Moroccan pistachio cookies. Overall, not real Moroccan food and I wouldn't recommend.

Evie M.

Yelp
My husband and I came here to celebrate my graduation. The customer service was great. The food was good. Only downside was that there was a fly in my couscous.

Mark A.

Yelp
Highly recommend this place. Just visiting for the weekend , The restaurant was full so we ate at the bar. I ordered the duck breast and my wife ordered the lamb shank tagine. Lamb was delicious and the duck was the best duck I ever had. We had great conversations with the bartenders. Ambiance was great and great live music also. If I lived here I would frequent this place every week

Mary K.

Yelp
Thanks to Resy, we had an outdoor reservation here on Saturday night for a party of 4. They originally sat us in front of the restaurant, but happily moved us to the covered parklet given it was about to rain. It ended up pouring, but thankfully the parklet kept us completely dry. The service was excellent, especially since they were running back and forth in the rain to wait on us. I recommend starting with the Salade Méditerranéenne, a trio of dips with a generous portion of pita; the eggplant zealous dip was the best! Our favorite entrees were the chicken Shawarma and Kefta Tagine lamb meatballs. The Couscous Royale and Couscous Traditionnel were not as flavorful. Portion sizes were just right, and the wine and cocktail lists were on point!

Katrina H.

Yelp
Oh my goodness...this restaurant is incredible. We found this spot by accident on a Friday night, and they were still able to seat us. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly (even managed to crack a smile on our ultra-shy boy). I cannot recall what my husband ordered (meatballs of some sort...I think a signature dish of theirs) but he loved it. Our son ordered a burger that was delicious, and I got a few appetizers that were absolutely delicious. This spot is amazing. If you want great food, great staff, and a great little neighborhood, you should check this place out!

Bjorn P.

Yelp
Barbes is a french morrocan restaurant in uptown Hoboken. The atomosphere is great with Morrocan and French decor. The bar is beautiful. The wines by the glass are excellent ( I enjoyed the french Malbec). The service is outstanding in that they are very friendly and accommodating and highly attentive. They have live music - we experienced an electric guitar and singer with eclectic fun choices. The food is great. I ate vegan and loved the eggplant and hummus and the vegetable couscous which was fantastic. We will come again.

Amanda K.

Yelp
Our waitress was slammed yet made time to chat w us. Never made us feel rushed even though we knew she was busy. We felt taken care of and appreciated. Our food was amazing. Our toddler ate her entire French toast (which was a first). We will be back.

Stefanie C.

Yelp
The ambiance in here is soo cute!! Service wasn't the greatest but I believe it was because they were very busy. Food was phenomenal so I am definitely willing to give it another chance!

Giseli C.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE MANAGER !!!! The manager at this place should definitely be replaced to say the least ... When I made the reservation I requested a table near the live music ... NOT ON TOP OF IT .. he gave us a table literally on top of the music basically and nearby he front door when it's 32 degrees outside and we would freeze every time someone opens the door . We than requested the table behind that and he said NO AND SAID HE WAS BUSY TONIGHT .. well he made ABSOLUTELY NOOOOOOOOOOOO EFFORT to accommodate us when we clearly stated we were returning customers. He than gives us a mediocre table that BARELY fit one person. And their dinner so I don't even have to tell you how tight it was to fit two people and their drinks , appetizers and dinners in such table . NOT to mention the fact my coat was in the floor because there was just no other place to put it once we didn't even have an extra chair . So after he heard me telling my boyfriend that I was going to update my review on Yelp than all of a sudden the table we requested was available . But I was already seated and annoyed with the LACK of customer service .. so I stayed at my miserable table that barely had enough room for one person , let alone 2 with appetizers and dinner and drinks . The food in the place is really good and unique and our waiter and bartender who were the very best were trying so hard to make up for the manager's poor and CRAPPY customer service . Even tho they were really good and the food in the place is also great , nothing can make up for the extremely poor customer service from the manager WHO MADE ABSOLUTELY NOOOOO EFFORT. To accommodate us .. .. OHHH and that table we requested was actually empty for the ENTIRE 2 hours and 45 minutes we were there .. see the table in pictures as well as my coat on the floor under the miserable table he provided us with ... that barely fit our dinner . NOT really sure if I will return with such POOR management who made absolutely NO effort to help us .... Sad.. just SAD because it was a special occasion for us ... so what a WASTE of my outfit , hair , time and my boyfriend's money .... If you are looking for a great atmosphere and positive vibe .. GO ELSEWHERE !!!

sydney k.

Yelp
Delicious!! mussels with the white wine broth were super good and fresh. Great live music!

Marissa R.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday night with a party of 3 at 7:30- we made a reservation and sat outside. Nice aesthetic outdoors and relaxed vibe. For drinks we tried; The Rock'n Moroccan which resembles a Mojito but with vodka. It was okay, if you are in the mood for a Mojito then this would be a good choice. Lady Lupo, which was good but very sweet. Montmarte which was my favorite and then Casablanca which was also very good but dangerous ;) For appetizers we got escargot, salade trio, and the grilled calamari. They all were incredible. The calamari was grilled which allowed you to actually enjoy the taste. The escargot was not as earthy tasting as some places which I think was due to the garlic butter white wine sauce. The hummus in the trio was some of the best I've ever had. For entrees we got the rack of lamb with vegetables and potatoes, the bronzini and salmon. The lamb was cook well. The bronzini wasn't as charred as it can be elsewhere, which I enjoyed. The salmon was my favorite. The mustard sauce on top of it is to die for. Overall great experience. The prices are reasonable and the service was great from the hostess to the servers and other staff.

Seth D.

Yelp
Solid French and Moroccan spot with a somewhat limited menu. Good cocktails. Classy ambiance.

Elaina J.

Yelp
Great live music creates a nice atmosphere. Food was really good. Mezze platter, and the lamb shank were the highlights

Andrew H.

Yelp
Second time here. First time was phenomenal. Ambience is great, staff is super friendly. Only thing is food quality has gone down. Escargot not pictured. Recipe has changed no flavor just soggy and herby. Mussels tasted heavy of thyme. Dessert was a treat. Definitely recommend the pastilla au lait. Something different and fun. Will be back to try different foods.

Clark G.

Yelp
Brunch for 5 of us. 1:30 pm reservation and was sitting at that time. Plenty of room for us sitting in a back corner with two tables together. Extremely friendly and accommodating staff. Hummus with pita was creamy, very good. Was told by the other four diners that the mint tea was excellent. Entrees were chicken pastilla (we asked if the Q (my wife, the Queen) could get it although not on brunch menu (n.p.), Chicken shawarma, two different renditions of mussels (gluten-free) and salade Tropezian (gluten-free). Everyone enjoyed their food. Q has a genetically inherited intolerance for untasty food so her praise of the chicken pastilla (plenty of pistachios) indicates a winner. Shrimp were nicely grilled and salad nicely chopped. Mussels were plump, a good size, and tasty. Shawarma hit the spot for me. Plenty of food. Water glasses were filled 5 or 6 times unobtrusively. Noise level wasn't bad. What you'd expect from a brunch crowd and the music system was not overpowering. $175 with tip for 5 was well worth it from my perspective. Looks like we will be back when visiting Hoboken daughter and son-in-law.

Mundeep B.

Yelp
Ate here today, big mistake. 15 mins before they took our drink order. Lychee Martini actually good, negroni was garbage. Mussels tasted fishy, fries were good because they tasted like McDonalds, calamari ehh, French onion soup was dirty water. Had the couscous and lamb...please please please don't call yourself Morrocan/French. It is a disgrace to both cultures. Front of house started arguing with waitress...dinner and a show I guess...was better than the jazz music they had going on. Bill was $150. Tipped 20%...died a little inside.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
The ambience and musical entertainment was great. This would be a. Great place to have a drink. but very disappointed with the food . The tomato appetizer was extremely sour . I was hoping for bread to soak up the sauce and cut the acid but no bread could be found . The steak au poivre Was a huge disappointment . Steak au poive is made with crushed peppercorns In a cream and Cognac Sauce which is lit on fire . This was nothing like that it. It was simple grilled NY strip steak no sauce served with cold fries to boot. If you want an excellent French dinner with the best steak au poive go to Rauols in Soho

Jennie T.

Yelp
This restaurant was fantastic! After my date and I were running late to another place, he booked us a reservation here and it was the best decision of the night. The servers were super friendly and the food was delicious. We both had Shawarma on a bed of greens, and I included it with a side of french fries. During our stay, the entire place was having a huge party. I don't know if this is a regular occurrence, but when we went there was another table celebrating a birthday and the restaurant had them doing conga lines around the room and they also had a guy on a saxophone interacting with the customers. The music was very loud that you can barely hear anybody, so that might be a flaw for some people and if you really can't stand loud noise or parties then I suggest to avoid this place. However, I'm saying as someone who normally does not get into big events that this was a fun experience. You really get into the spirit of the place and I would love to go again. My only complaint is that they missed a little spot of food on our table when we were seated (it looked liked spinach). That could land them in a heat of trouble with somebody who could file a complaint, but I decided to let it pass. Overall, wonderful location and fun environment. I don't think one leftover piece of spinach is enough to change 5 stars into a 4, but just pay close attention to the details next time!

Danielle M.

Yelp
A really nice date night... the interior is really beautiful, and it's a great place to try something new. The food is delicious, but I'd only go if you like Moroccan food or are in the mood for Moroccan food. (Obviously). Overall I enjoyed my time there, but I probably wouldn't go back anytime soon. I was vegan when I went, so I can only talk to the vegan food they have here. Maybe if I start eating meat again, I'll come back to try a different dish!
