Where to Find Standout Food and Drinks in Portland’s West Hills

"Although not a restaurant in its own right, this grocery store and market’s deli counter serves some of the best Lebanese food in the area, perfect for a weekend picnic or a quick bite in between Zoom meetings. House baked or grilled pita can be wrapped into a lamb shawarma or falafel to order or dipped into za’atar hummus or olive tapenade. The deli also serves pizza and sandwiches, both pre-made and made-to-order." - Nick Townsend, Thom Hilton

This is a favorite grocery store in my family. The international offerings bring us in. The quality meat and produce is impressive. There are so many different types of fruit you cannot find anywhere else. The deli counter is a must try. There is great cheese selection. The beer cooler has one of the best selections in the city.

Google
Hands down this is my favorite grocery store in Portland. The deli always serves delicious restaurant-grade food, the staff are so attentive and helpful. Their orange juice machine is a game-changer. Wide selection on pretty much all their products, and they carry mainly organic, ethically-sourced products without price gouging. Did I mention the meat section? It’s like a showroom with the quality and presentation, you can tell they take their time and really care about the work they do. Amazing place…

Google
This is my go to grocery store for hard to find and imported beers. They always have an excellent selection of Belgian beers plus a lot of local craft brewed beers. Their wine section is pretty large also which is nice. They have a decent produce section and meat counters, and a seafood section.

Pedram

Google
While this may not be the store’s fault, this experience was truly disgusting and worth sharing so others can avoid it. We bought a jar of spicy olives, and the moment we opened it, it was covered in mold.

Google
It's still my favorite Middle Eastern/Mediterranean store in all of Oregon/Washington. They always have everything I want, there's always a great selection and everything is always fresh. I make the drive at least once a month to stock up on essentials and don't mind the drive across the bridge because they are always so kind, warm and welcoming and all the other stores can learn a lot about great customer service from them. They have a good variety of meats, bakery products, produce, and frozen its as well. They always have bread and lavash as well. Will continue to make the drive and gladly give them my business over other stores any day.

Google
Yesterday, I visited them in markets from the Middle East, where you can find most things, including baked goods, appetizers, and freshly cooked ready-made food. I found there orange juice being squeezed in front of them, and some types of cheese, sweets, and drinks. Everything is excellent and clean, and the hosts receive the visitor with all confidence and a smile. Thank you to everyone.

Google
Went in on a whim and wow what a grocery store. I wish I lived close by because I would come here regularly. What a fun mix of everyday staples and European speciality items! The store was super clean and well organized. The music was bumpin' and everyone working there was super friendly. Perfect place to come for late night snacks but also to do your regular grocery run. Would highly recommend!

Google
Great little market for those harder to find specialty items that you can’t get at your regular grocery store. They have a large selection of Mediterranean spices, specialty olives, and we also love their snacks section. So many varieties of imported cookies and other treats that you won’t find elsewhere.

Yelp
Back in the day when I had a car I would travel out to the mother ship on Barbur Boulevard. I would spend an hour or so wandering the aisles looking at all the international items and loading up my cart. One of my go-to items was the ginormous containers, almost a gallon size, of pitted Kalamata olives for only about $17.99. Now I don't have a car anymore but luckily for me, Barbur World Foods is just down the street from me in the Pearl. They don't stock the huge sized Kalamata olives but they will transfer a jug in for me which is awesome. My other two go-to items are the Arz labne and lavashe. I have to call ahead for the labne because they sell out of it. I still love wandering the aisles. I can walk there but need to take a Lyft back home with all my stuff. Barbur World Foods is a gem in the Pearl. 2024 - Review #17

Yelp
Such a fun store to walk through. The fruits and veggies looked great and the prepared foods look delicious. It was fun to see some meats that aren't in the traditional grocery stores. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
They have a great selection of hard to find items imported from around the world . The people are always friendly and have a great deli selection, they even make fresh made Pita to order . The only downside is, you need to look at the expiration dates . Sometimes I find things that are way out of date like Coffee and Tea .

Susan C.

Yelp
Great selection of various international foods in a well organized store. I only encountered the check out person and she was great. I did find pricing on canned and refrigerated items to be high, even higher than ordering thru Amazon.
google avatar

Pepper R.

Yelp
They have an amazing selection of food items packaged fresh and on shelf! I got some hummus tabbouleh and toum.
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! The deli is simply the best. Fresh pita to go with all the middle eastern sides. And yesterday they had a smash burger special that was so delicious. Great selection of beer and wine & the fresh squeezed orange juice is a must.
google avatar

Yelp
I think the quality of the food has gone down hill since covid. My food needed salt and spices. It was bland and boring. I still enjoy looking at the variety of the food in the hot case, and it's still fun to go there and Check out all hidden gems and finding goodies from when I was young growing up in the Middle East. Parking is never an issue, as they have two parking lots. I did not know about the second one until my last visit. Yes, I will still stop there if I am in the area but will not seek them out anymore...

Yelp
Wow! Incredible market featuring a stunning variety of both locally made and European/Eastern European/Middle Eastern imported foods & beverages. They have a decent variety of fresh produce, along with a small butcher & fresh seafood counter as well. And wow, I had no idea there were so many kinds of dates, so if you need some dried dates, this is the place to go! Their deli & bakery counter had us drooling, too. They also have a small hot-bar of ready-to-eat food and prepacked fresh meals you just need to heat up at home at incredibly reasonable prices (especially compared to the prices at New Seasons). They have also aisles upon aisles of canned & bottled foods, spices, etc. along with a refrigerated and frozen section. Plus, in the back they have a nice variety of wines, sake and a huge selection of beers, along with a large cold room of chilled beers (and it's VERY cold in there!). We couldn't believe the huge variety of beers in the cold room! The prices were quite reasonable and in many cases the same or even lower than our local Fred Meyer (and definitely lower than what we pay for ready to heat premade meals/food at the deli at New Seasons). We even found some of our favorite locally made food brands that our local Fred Meyer stopped carrying. Love this place!

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, the people who work here are always friendly and helpful. Their selection of foods and spices is great and the quality of the items is excellent and prices are reasonable . I especially love the deli counter, their chicken schwarma bowl is and the pickled veggies are a lovely bonus (I always ask for extra).

Yelp
I had been to the other location in pearl and love it but this time I decided to try the bigger store just to see how different the offerings were . There is limited parking OutFront so I do feel it could be a challenge on busy days. The store is big and has a lot to offer especially middle eastern foods . I ended up getting a lot of things for an upcoming dinner party and needless to say my guests were intrigued . some of it was food used for prep like Tahini , cheeses ,pita etc and other things like the red pepper Hummus , olives ,chips and wines . The store made chips are out of this world and comes in a big bag that would last you days . The pita is freshly made but I felt like it doesn't taste as good as it did the first day ,so only buying as much you need is the key . The deli has so many great options and you can buy things by pound . They have an extensive wine selection and the shop owner really convinced me to buy more than I had intended. More wine is always better though and I regret nothing! Slightly pricey but then these are ethnic things that the generic stores don't have or don't have much variety of . The staff is very friendly and helpful .

Yelp
Best store barbur world foods has so much good food and snacks and all the workers are great.

Yelp
What a sweet market! Just what I needed was an international market that had lots of delicious foods. I love the fact that they have each country's food listed on the end caps. I found lavash bread that was delicious. Now I know where to go when I need international food fix
google avatar

Yelp
Probably my favorite grocery store, the popular ready-to-eat section is what draws me in. There's a sister location in the Pearl District, but I'm fond of this one. I can't really put my finger on it as to why, maybe it's the free parking and a larger selection of said grab and go. If I had to choose one must have grocery item: Labneh.
google avatar

jean s.

Yelp
Love this grocery store. Deli and meat market can't be beat! Produce section always has great seasonal plus specialty items that you won't find elsewhere. If you like ethnic grocers, don't miss!

Brendan Q.

Yelp
We go there for Mediterranean food, excellent hummus, fresh baked pita, etc. But always end up buying this that and the other thing. Excellent produce, meat, seafood. Best candy from around the world. If you want a unique gift, come here. Wine, cider, mead, beer, candies, chocolates, crackers and cheeses...
google avatar

Yelp
If your palette takes you beyond American cuisine, this is your store! The cheese selection alone represents most of the United Nations with Turkish farmers cheese, Greek feta, Italian marscarpone, hard cheeses from Ireland, Swiss enmental, Lebanese lebneh p, Indian Paneer, and so much more! Same goes for the pastas and grains, the vast selection of canned and jarred pantry items, uniique cookies I usually only come across when I'm abroad, varieties of baklava, pastries and even the chocolate bar varieties and brands. This store packs in a plethora of options. I just love wondering the aisles to see what is abpvailable and let my mind get creative with dinner possibilities. Whenever I am serving pita and hummus, if I'm. It making my own, World Foods is the only place I will buy it. Once you try their lemony hummus and fresh, usually warm pita, you will know why. There is simply no going back. The bar has been set! The deli has a tantalizing array of options and you can't go wrong. Just don't shop when hungry or you will want to purchase it all. Roasted lamb, lemony chicken, spinach pies, tabouili, roasted carrots, scallion lebnah dip (this is a must every time) and roasted potatoes - it's all divine. Pick a meal then go back another day. World Foods isn't going anywhere, you can have more! The produce section is off to the side and while on the smaller side, they have everything you need, even a machine to make fresh orange juice. Those that work here are super friendly and during this time of Pandemic, they are taking lots of measures to keep everyone safe while enabling you to purchase your favorite items. The SW Barbur location is the original store, is very well known and has tons of repeat customers. For a reason. Typically I shop at their 2nd location on NW Everett and 9th in the Pearl as it's closer to my home. Plus, it's new, beautifully designed, has a much larger footprint, is basking in natural light, has tables outside and an eating area and coffee bar inside. It's so well organized and stocked that everywhere you turn looks like an Instagram worthy pic. That being said, I won't deduct any stars from this location. The SW Barbur World Foods is just too good, offers items you can't easily find elsewhere, and is the place that started it all.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible market with a great produce section, and a variety of of spices & foods from middle eastern countries. I could easily spend a few hours combing the isles and discovering all kinds of delicious things. They also have a deli and hot food section which includes a pizza oven.
google avatar

Ruth A.

Yelp
Enjoyed this small market very much. Has a great selection of grab and go Mediterranean and Middle Eastern items. Lots of bakery and pastry items also. The meat department is also very good. I especially liked the staff who work there, all very helpful in answering questions regarding the foods. I found the prices competitive with similar stores in Portland, and the meat prices slightly lower. All in all a great experience and very convenient location.

E. N.

Yelp
Incredible variety of foods, spices, teas, and other items from around the world! Their service is very helpful.

Yelp
This had been a great place to shop for years and I been coming here with my parents since I was a kid. We would make it a trip from salem to get some of our international Mediterranean stuff so maybe for 20 years or so my folks knows john the owner and love his store. But I must say. I never thought I'd be leaving a one star review for a store that I shop with at least twice a month driving from Ridgefield Washington where i reside nowto here, to get my hookah products bread, produce and all. I spend anyhwere from 300$ to 400$ each visit. But the service here has really went to crap in the past year RUDE Very uninviting. Not all the staff. But few and darius if shes a manager she needs to be Fired asap absolutely horrible attitude and customer service.

Carl B.

Yelp
As a regular customer, I was a bit annoyed this morning when the woman at the cash register asked me for identification. I'm a regular customer that spends at least $100 a week in your store. This never happens to me. The woman appeared quite apologetic, and hinted that she would get in trouble if she didn't ask me. Since you are so concerned about regular customers scamming you, what about the opposite? What about when one of your cashiers tries to rip one of your regular customers off by sneaking a bogus charge in the bill? That's what happened to me a few weeks ago at the hands of a young woman cashier who dies her hair in different colors. I let it slide at the time. But since I was antagonized this morning: here it is for everyone to see. Be careful with the young woman cashier with multicolored hair...she might try to scam you at Barbur Foods.

Yelp
The deli in this place is the stuff dreams are made of. You can get freshly baked pitas and pizza, sandwiches made to order, hot food, and a wide array of salads and hummus. Everything I've tried is delicious. Outside of the deli area, there's a pretty good cheese selection. The produce is always fresh and in stock and the aisles with pantry staples appear to be as well. This isn't the type of store I'd do my main shopping at, but for a picnic or party, I come to stock up on tasty treats!

P P.

Yelp
Find many exotic foods here that you won't find elsewhere. A bit spin deer and Winco Trader Joe's and Costco, but with a selection that is vastly different. The produce is fresh the deli has delicious foods and John, the owner is a really nice knowledgeable fellow.

Phillip Bowers ..

Yelp
Ordered their Thanksgiving meal. It was wonderful! Excellent food and service! The cheese covered Brussels sprouts were phenomenal!

Yelp
I went in today to do a can return and couldn't believe how rude and short everyone was. After seeing someone with several large bags of cans was using the machine I went inside to request someone count them so I wasn't waiting outside in my car in the heat. The second I walked in the cashier immediately directed me to wait outside saying that "he should be out there." Who? No idea, I've never gone inside before since I normally just use the machine to deal with my household's addiction to fizzy water. So I went outside where there was no one but the person using the machine. So I came back in to be the greeted by the same SUPER rude cashier and a man who immediately asked me if the machine was broken, when I responded no and that there was someone with a lot of cans using the machine he informed me that I should wait until they'd done 140 cans and then interrupt them and tell them it's my turn. In utter confusion I turned around to leave and go elsewhere but he suddenly decided to help me and took my cans back to count them. While waiting another cashier asked me if it was my backpack outside, again confused I followed her thinking my small purse backpack had called out of my car, realizing that wasn't the case and I told her no that my bag was in my car pouting to it in the parking lot. After that I feel like their tone changed and they were suddenly more helpful. Counting the cans took maybe took 3 minutes and he came back. I can only imagine they assumed I was someone experiencing houselessness and treated me like an absolute inconvenience. Way to make me second guess my appearance, I guess I need to dress up more when shopping there. I live in a HOUSE right down the street and my wife and I shop there regularly. Often dropping hundreds of dollars on specialty items. But if this is how y'all treat people I can happily go elsewhere with my time and money. Regardless of my income and status y'all need to learn some kindness and compassion. You have no idea what other people are experiencing and being treated this way for no reason absolutely took me out at the knees as someone with anxiety. Rest assured I will never bother your staff again with a simple request since they clearly haven't been trained to handle them.

Yelp
We were in Portland and we were wanting to make Knefeh at home and a primary ingredient in it is Kataifi which is the dough used. After some searching I found that this place had it so we went. It is a smaller market, but it does have many Mediterranean options here. Walking by the deli was also awesome with all the different items they carried and ready to eat. The whole experience was nice and the staff was also friendly, definitely recommend if you are looking for some uncommon Mediterranean ingredient that your common grocery store will not carry.

Ed G.

Yelp
I'm from California and been coming to this market for 4+ years due to family that moved from the Bay Area to this area. It's a quaintly nice store. Today I got a dose of racism in them flesh from the meat market clerk. Very unfortunate

Yelp
Yet another home run for this fabulous food emporium. My earlier comments still pertain and I wanted to do an update given my experience yesterday. First, I had the singular best rib lamb chops of my life! There were no lamb leg steaks available yesterday but the lovely local rib chops looked amazing. With a simple grilling and limited garlic salt blend and pepper seasoning the medium to medium rare chops were succulent! Tender, flavorful, just the right amount of juicy goodness after a ten minute rest. Amazing!Oh, and the grab and go cooler by the prepared food counter keeps growing with the same and more full service food items in addition to the vast selection at the main prepared food coolers. Wow! I am never disappointed in anything at this fantastic food emporium including the stellar customer service exhibited by every single department. 'Nuff said, eh?!

Susan D.

Yelp
I can always find unusual items here. Very good meat counter. Sometimes a little pricy, tho.

John L.

Yelp
I love this place for the amazing variety. It easily burns a big hole in my pocket everything I enter the store.
google avatar

River S.

Yelp
This market has great food selections, BUT they are so rude. Every single person working was unfriendly or down right rude. Beware if you ask a question. " Isn't it on the tag." It was clear when we got home it was because she didn't understand the items in the food case. The checker never acknowledged our presence. We will never be back.
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
I really enjoy this store. I love to cook and eat Greek, Italian,Turkish, Moroccan style foods and this place is inspiring. The employees are super friendly and nice. I think they must like working here? or at least it feels like they do. Everyone has a smile and they are very kind. It is so much more pleasant than some other places I have been. (I am looking at you , Winco). The deli is full of fabulous Mediterranean goodies. They make falafel, huge piping hot wheat or white pitas for $1 each and pizzas on the spot to order. I like their hummus, it t is fluffy and mellow and very kid friendly. Mine ate it in the car on the way home that is how kid friendly it is. They also have roast lamb or chicken schwarma and you can get it on a plate, in a bowl, or stuffed into a pita. And they have all the condiments you want from tzatziki to tahini to harissa. There are beautiful vegetables and salads in the deli and they are not boring. Pomegranate roasted carrots? Tabouli with quinoa? Pasta salad with all the good stuff? Yup. Yes please! There is wine. Sometimes there are samples. I love that. There are fancy things you cannot find other places. Interesting pasta shapes. All kinds of pickled peppers and cornichon. Curiously delicious different cookies, breads, and pastries. Labneh. Feta. The produce section is small but bountiful. I have not bought meat simply because we do not buy a lot but I have seen people debating which fish or lamb thing to buy. There is always some treat at the check out to try too. Chocolate halvah? Little cookie like things? Go. You will emerge with either the goods to make a great meal or if you are exhausted like me you will hit the deli and bring home a ready made feast.

Darren H.

Yelp
Great meat & seafood. My go to for sausages. For size of store good beer selection too
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
We happened to pass by here today and decided to stop in. What a cool little store. A deli, decent cheese selection, random hard to find vegetarian foods, just a fun eclectic grocery store. What I really liked was the do-it-yourself orange juice machine! How fun is that!?

Yelp
EMPLOYEE REVIEW**** I was in college and got hired as a pizza maker. The head pizza chef had an open disdain for me from the second that we met, and would regularly scream at me in front of customers, and more worryingly in front of other management and staff. He openly refused to teach me anything about the job and then screamed at me when I had a question. It's no surprise though, as every single employee that I met there was a horrible person. People would literally tell me to not bother them if I tried to introduce myself or build rapport. During my interview, I made clear that I COULD NOT WORK WEEKENDS. I was hired and assured that I wouldn't have to. Well, literally during my first week, I get asked to "work this weekend". I say ok. The manager tells me to be in on Saturday. I go and complete the shift. I get a call on Monday saying that I need to come in , as I've been fired. They had put me on for another shift on Sunday without mentioning ANYTHING to me. Their excuse was that "we had you on the schedule for Sunday on our mobile app shift planner, so you had to have seen that you were scheduled". I was lambasted by about 5 members of senior management in their upper office about this, and then escorted out like a criminal. Do not work here under any circumstance, even if you're a college student needing some pocket money. There's many better options in the area.
google avatar

Ricci S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood store with wide variety of ethnic options. Good deli and beer selections. Quick checkout and nice personnel.
google avatar

Carol T.

Yelp
Stopped here for a "to go meal". We got a chicken shawarma bowl and a lamb shawarma bowl. The boxes were stuffed full of rice, meat, mixed vegetables, olives, tahini dressing...wow! Delicious! GF wasn't a problem! We also picked up a couple of prepared sides, naan bread (for my husband), cheese pieces, peppers... this is a great place to locate hard to find Greek, Mediterranean and Italian specialty items. I noticed the selection of olives is similar to what we saw in Greece and Italy. We'll be back.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
Great little market. Good produce, great mushrooms, awesome butchers, friendly staff. May be a couple more bucks, but it's quality.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Great variety of ethnic foods, clean and well maintained! We used to go almost weekly and always had a pleasant experience
google avatar

Mary Ann H.

Yelp
Lots of food stuffs for the exotic taste! An open oven for very fresh, hot pita bread! Good customer assistance where needed!
google avatar

Cary C.

Yelp
What a great ethnic market. Incredibly diverse range of dry goods as well as prepared foods, produce, and Butcher shop. They also have an excellent beer selection, not only Pacific Northwest but also global beers in a lot of hard to find Belgium Offerings. All very reasonably priced. If you're looking for Middle Eastern ingredients this is the only place in town that I found is any variety whatsoever.

BD D.

Yelp
This market discriminates gender based on "if" you have a backpack. No postings policy, and upon entering, was advised to drop my backpack at the door unsecured. I said I didn't see a posting and was a bit taken back since I have been frequent to this establishment since 2011. Apparently today I look suspicious because I wore a bandana under my hat due to this morning light snow in Beaverton. Btw... there is a woman who is wearing a backpack in the store currently as I write this article and at the checkout line. The older clerk (male) whom discriminated against me blamed management and then walked right past the woman with the backpack... sadly ignorance on policy does not justify discrimination. When I pointed to the patron with a backpack on he said he didn't see her and then became defensive even going as far as saying he is middle eastern to justify his discriminating behavior. I just said ignorance doesn't justify his time. Oh well.

Yelp
I love this place. But what's not to love about a small neighborhood grocery store that sells home-made baklava? Featuring a middle-eastern/Mediterranean deli, the well-staffed shop offers a vertible wonderland of comfort chow and gourment grub from all over the globe. From hard to find farina to basic kitchen staples, Barbur World Foods is the spot. Looking to replace that pallid cheese platter for your holiday party? Look no further. Personally, I'm always down for a funky Yak Jack or creamy Camel-bere -- and live by the motto 'life's too short not to scream Sic Semper Tyrannis!' Sorry, I digress. It's also worth noting BWW stocks a good selection of local beer and wine. Kudos. But no review of this culinary cornocopia would be complete without mentioning their extensive chocolate selection. I recently tried a rare cacao from Lithuania and now know the true meaning of nirvana -- not the band killed by Courtney Love -- but rather a noble cause worth dying for ... or at least risking diabetes. And did I mention the baklava?

Kristin J.

Yelp
Love this place. Great selection from international food as well as a quick ramen noodle if you need one. You can find new and exciting foods and wines. The staff is friendly and it's always a go to stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Thanks, Yelp, for leading me here. It looks dubious from the street, but I'm so glad I checked it out. We came here to build an impromptu picnic; we scored. Butternut hummus--fantastic and perfect dipping sauce for the jicama sticks--my son's new favorite veggie--and the roasted veggies I picked up in the deli section. The roasted red pepper hummus was also delicious, as was the garlicky, creamy baba ghanoush. We also picked up 1/2 roasted chicken to go with the veggies. It was tender and lightly seasoned with the smoky, slightly salty, crisped skinned treatment that I fall for every time. To drink, I picked up a spirited carrot, ginger, apple concoction. Perfect. We'll be back for specialty items I don't make or can't find in our regular stores.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I came here on a recommendation from a friend. This place is awesome! Lots of fresh and unique produce options, a great beer and wine selection, and other fun stuff amok! I tried the lamb bowl, and it was a delicious mix of flavors. It's a huge amount of food for only $10. I do wish I had tried the roasted lamb. Next time!
google avatar

Jonathan P.

Yelp
This place is gross and I will never go back. Its a giant market with quality food, but the employees get paid 0 so care about their job 0. The whole store is so dingy considering they charge around 6 dollars for mayonnaise.
google avatar

Ruth F.

Yelp
Barber foods has an Enormous array of different styles of foods. Whether you want fresh to take home and cook yourself, already prepared canned frozen or boxed they have it. A large wine selection great cheese selection and their hot bar has lots of wonderful different foods. It is just a little pricey however. Shop local

Norah A.

Yelp
Best Arabic market you'll ever see in Oregon their Dali is the best, it's a pricey but worth it. I hope they consider opening in other locations over the state this kind of stuff needed
