Attending the Brooklyn Nets vs. Milwaukee Bucks game on October 27, 2024, was nothing short of electrifying. Courtesy of the New York Association of Black Journalists, I had the privilege of covering the game from the media booth.
While gaining media access to Barclays Center had its hurdles--two rounds of security and a slight hassle with my backpack--I finally made it in, settling into what felt like premium spectator seats.
Unlike the media privileges I had imagined, there were no complimentary snacks or access to the exclusive tiki bar that always piques my curiosity.
Regardless, the experience was unforgettable. The game kicked off at 6:00 PM ET, with the energy in the packed stadium palpable.
Seeing players like Cam Thomas and Dennis Schroder for the Nets and the legendary Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard for the Bucks made it all worthwhile.
When it comes to food, however, Barclays is an overpriced adventure. I snagged a meal and a souvenir cup for $20 before the second quarter.
At halftime, I indulged in a bag of Sour Patch Kids and some popcorn, setting me back an additional $16.
The popcorn, while fresh, had a short life. I noticed uneaten batches being discarded in large plastic bags, which felt wasteful given my $8 spend on a single serving. (And no, I did not take the usher's sarcastic suggestion to retrieve any from the trash.)
The stadium, enormous and bustling, brought back memories of my last live basketball game--a distant 2003 outing.
The layout hasn't changed much since, but the atmosphere felt new and inviting. For anyone considering a visit, I'd advise bringing snacks if possible (discreetly, of course).
Security seems more focused on safety than snack smugglers, and trust me, the prices inside will make you wish you had.
Between ticket prices, food, and souvenirs, the experience can get expensive quickly.
As a solo attendee, I spent an additional $35 on top of the ticket, but families or groups can easily find themselves forking over $100 or more.
Despite the cost, the game itself was exhilarating, and the Barclays Center reminded me why live sports are unmatched in energy and entertainment.
Would I go again? Absolutely--but next time, I'm sneaking in a bag of chips.
