Baretto di San Vigilio

"Situated in the small square in front of the cable-car entrance, this typical bar-cum-restaurant with a retro, vaguely English feel serves generous traditional cuisine reinterpreted with a modern twist, including home-made bread and desserts. In summer, meals are served on the terrace with enchanting views of the town, while the two winter dining rooms have a rustic yet elegant feel." - Michelin Inspector

A Local’s Guide to Bergamo, Italy

"Then enjoy your dinner on the terrace of the Baretto by Beppe. The food is beautiful, and the view of the whole city and the sunset is outstanding, when the lights of the city blend with the first stars."

My husband and I researched restaurants in Bergamo before we left the UK. We came across this delightful restaurant online and called to book a table on the terrace for the evening we arrived. Well, what can we say! It delivered beyond our expectations in every way. We took the funicular railway and a few steps from the terminal & we had arrived at the restaurant with its outstanding view and twinkling lights. It was such a pretty setting. The buzz from the people dining on the terrace was just lovely, and we received exceptional service from the staff. Nothing was too much trouble and they were very friendly too. The menu choices were amazing, and the food was incredible! Every dish had flavours that set your taste buds going. We had a lovely rose wine recommended by their wine waiter, which did not disappoint. All in all, we had a truly wonderful evening, and we will treasure our memories of our time spent here. Highly recommended. Pay a visit when in Bergamo, you will not be disappointed!

Perhaps the best lunch we have ever had! Great food is an understatement and the service was first class. Couple that with a warm sunny day and sitting on the outdoor terrace - it couldn’t have been better. We had a spritz and two lovely bottles of wine between 4. The restaurant gave us various complimentary tasting dishes which were all delicious. When I asked for the bill it was way under my expectations at about $100AUD per head - the best inexpensive lunch I’ve ever had - plenty of room for a good tip to the happy staff and owners.

One of the best experiences I ever had in Italy, amazing food, great staff. I would totally recommend this eating journey. We got here by accident just visiting Bergamo after some busy days in Milan, and were kinda disappointed to be honest. But I do recommend Bergamo and especially this restaurant. Great starters, amazing dishes. 10/10 experience

A must visit restaurant on top of Bergamo! Located on the highest part of bergamo (after second funicular), displays a stunning views of Bergamo city! Restaurant itself is super cosy and staff is very friendly! Food was superior and experience is worth it, all the way! We tried different kinds of foods, their presentation was exceptional and taste - wonderful. Seafood was fresh! A must visit place.

Personally, I believe there is a certain level in cooking that can be achieved, and I think Baretto has hit that invisible ceiling. The dishes were incredibly delicious. But that’s not all—because when you reach such a level of flavor, the next step is to break through that ceiling, and at Baretto, they did so by creating a true gastronomic experience. Dinner there was like taking us on a new, unknown adventure; it was an experience, not just an ordinary meal. 🤌🏼 Thank you 🇮🇹

Yelp
Came here for dinner and it didn't disappoint. From the gin and tonic starter, to the bread, then to the 1st course of meats, the Prosecco (probably the best we had in Italy) to the bread ravioli and the tiramisu, it was all excellent. My wife had the fish with yogurt sauce and it too was incredible. Thankfully we went with our friend who is from Bergamo so I am sure we got excellent service. So here is the summary: Service was great (inside for dinner - didn't try the outside dining as the weather was turning) Food was great Drinks were great Dessert was great Wines were great All in all a great place to have dinner in the upper upper city. Thanks for the great food and service.

Yelp
This restaurant won the Michelin 2019 award. The food is fantastic. I had the mozzarella tomato paste salad, tiramisu dessert and a couple of the wines. The bread basket was so fresh, I had one too many pieces). The restaurant also served a free tomato soup with cream. The restaurant has a wonderful small outside seating area that allows views of the old and new Bergamo city as well. The server was attentive, however the seating and prepping of a table was a little snappy, with attitude. This is the reason for 4/5 star rating.

Yelp
Sad to relate, based on personal experience I can only give the Baretto a middling rating. Why? Absolutely lousy, indifferent, arrogant, poxy service. The restaurant has one of the most desirable locations in Bergamo. San Vigilio is a district in its own right, even towering above the Citta Alta (High City) of Bergamo, reached only by a choice of calf-stretching hill climb, or funicular railway. Once there, arriving by road or rail, the Baretto stares you in the face. Its terrace overlooks the entire city. Its indoor rooms are stylish and comfortable. Its menus are tempting and boast of fresh produce. At 11.30am we'd done enough walking and climbing to deserve a beer, even though the gun hadn't sounded. Baretto advertises itself as a Cafe-Bar-Ristorante, and its terrace looked inviting. An advance party of two sat at a six-seater outside table set aside for drinks (other tables were set for dining). Five beers were ordered. The three stragglers had to carry their own chairs from the bar, whilst the staff looked on smirkingly. No-one came our way for 25 minutes. We were still undecided on our lunch venue, so we thought a bottle of prosecco would help the decision-making process. I entered the bar and ordered it, in view of the lack of waiting personnel. We were left for a further 10 minutes. Then someone emerged to say that they would not be serving the prosecco, as from 12 noon it was dining only. No-one had the wit or intelligence to ask if we might be dining with them. We called for the drinks bill, but were then told to go up to the bar and pay there. We were caned a hefty 5 euros per small beer. Two stars for the view. Such people do not deserve custom. Go to the Ristorante San Vigilio 20 metres across the road instead, where the great views are matched by faultless food and service.
