"There are many reasons why Londoners go categorically ape-shit for a boat. We’re a landlocked city with a great appreciation for Below Deck and who lovingly chant The Lonely Island’s I’m On a Boat every single time we so much as step a toe on a pedalo. Bless our hearts. Enter Barge East, an old Dutch barge that’s docked in Hackney Wick. On the deck you can sit alfresco and make your way through their menu of things like courgette flowers stuffed with beef tartare, or just sit back with a glass of wine in the sun. " - sinead cranna
"Now, we’re going to preface this by saying that Barge East is very much a docked boat that you can eat, drink, and be merry on. But for the purposes of a hang with all of your friends, your partner’s three cousins, and someone you think is called Sarah who you’re 99% sure no one in your group actually knows, Barge East’s garden is where you want to be. You’ll still get excellent views of the river, not to mention access to heaters, cute little log seats, and all the excellent drinking options you’ll find aboard. Importantly, most of their garden terrace is also completely covered from the, ahem, trash London weather and you can get involved in their very exciting Flatbread Society street food situation. Yes, the smoked haddock flatbread is, in our humble opinion, mandatory." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak
"The PDR situation: an indoor cabin and some very cute outdoor sheds aboard a barge. Yes, that’s a thing. Cost: it’s totally free, baby. We owe Barge East in Hackney Wick a great debt. Not because we ran off with one of their mulled cider teapots without paying—although tempting—but because we once forgot to book a place for a mate’s birthday and Barge East just so happened to have a free table. We looked incredibly thoughtful for booking a private table on a boat ‘weeks in advance’. Thank you Barge East. And you’ll be thanking them too because not only do they have a private ‘Captain’s Cabin’ that you can book for up to eight people, they also have charming ‘big ski energy’ cabins for six in their garden that come complete with blankets and hot water bottles for chilly evenings. That’s right, hot water bottles. We love to see it. " - heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak
"Scottish people know how to do winter right. It actually snows there, people. They’re basically those north-of-the-wall-Free-Folk legends from Game Of Thrones with The Proclaimers thrown in for good measure. We’re going to stop offending Scottish people now and tell you that Barge East is throwing a Burns night on the 25th and the 28th of the month, featuring a four-course Scottish supper, a dram of whisky each, and live music—all for £49 per person. Not up for going out? Classic tartan-fest restaurant Boisdale are doing a virtual Burns night celebration including a big old feast and Ardbeg whisky for just under 90 quid." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

We’re a landlocked city with a great appreciation for Below Deck and who lovingly chant The Lonely Island’s I’m On a Boat every single time we so much as step a toe on a pedalo. Bless our hearts. Enter Barge East, an old Dutch barge that’s over 100 years old and has been docked in Hackney Wick and transformed into a ‘floating dining room’. On the deck you can sit al fresco and make your way through their menu of things like courgette flowers stuffed with beef tartare, seared pork neck, and big-deal roasts come Sunday. If you’re haunted by Titanic or just don’t really trust anything on water, then know that they also have a garden on dry land that’s perfect for a glass of wine in the sunshine." - Heidi Lauth Beasley
