"My Favorite Coffee Bar: Jesse Kahn on Portland's Barista “Barista in Portland , Oregon, was one of the first shops in the country where you could taste coffee from a variety of roasters," says Jesse Kahn, of New York's Counter Culture Coffee. "Billy Wilson has created a culture of excellence in all of his shops. His talented baristas focus on giving customers a great experience and consistently well-prepared coffee.” This appeared in the May 2014 issue."

How the Pacific Northwest Became a Coffee Paradise - Eater Portland

"Billy Wilson, a Lava Java alum and multiple regional barista champion. Rather than settle for the traditional approach, in which a cafe would serve coffees from a dedicated source roaster, Wilson and his team flew in coffees from boutique roasteries across the country, curating the best of the best." - Jordan Michelman

Google
One of the best cup of coffee ever had. I had a latte and it was very smooth and creamy. The cafe space is relaxing and well curated, industrial vibe. Indoor and outdoor patio seating. Highly recommend this to all coffee lovers!

Google
The Valrhona Mocha is the best mocha I have ever had. Pair it with a slice of banana bread and there you have the best coffee pastry combo! Staff is super nice and the atmosphere is very clean and cozy.

The coffee has a delightful aroma and a smooth, pleasant flavor. However, the price doesn't quite match the quantity provided. The building itself is very cool, and the outdoor seating offers a beautiful view of the city, complemented by the fresh scent of jasmine flowers.

Google
I've only had a single oat milk latte here, but it might be the best I've ever drank. I'll be back to try some more espresso focused options so I can validate I wasn't hallucinating, but I'm super happy to have Barista in the neighborhood. It's worth noting that they don't have a ton of seating and probably more of a grab and go type place.

Artsy Heartsy

Google
I'm a regular at this coffee shop and am a fiend for their Horchata mocha. Price is a little steep in comparison to some other coffee around but the quality makes up for it. The only criticism I have is the interior, clearly they're limited to essentially being the lobby of an office building but in comparison to other Barista locations it doesn't come off as cozy...Maybe adding more posters and/or softer seating to fix up to the vibe is my suggestion

Google
Two iced oat milk lattes to-go.. phenomenal. Smooth, creamy, energizing. Amazing introduction to Portland! Can’t wait to try all the different espresso options.

Google
My favorite coffee shop in the area. The espresso is consistent and smooth, which makes any of their drinks enjoyable. Their pastries are also very tasty. Overall highly recommend!

Friendly staff and the best oat milk latte I have had so far!

Yelp
Always a fave spot to stop and love being able to call my espresso and try new roasters and blends to expand my palate. Service is always informative and friendly. Great spot in NW and a cool building to meet a friend for coffee.

Yelp
The exterior is inviting and the bench style seating, though full, was great looking. The chocolate chip cookie looked enticing but was rather plain and untasteful. The coffee was mediocre considering the price, but the cherry on top was being told to pour my own cream despite ordering it with cold foam. Service was fine otherwise.

Yelp
What makes a good Italian cappuccino? It's the robust espresso and sweet foam on top - the right temperature hot hot hot! Who makes the best cappuccino? Barista is in the conversation for me. Last, you need a good barrista artist who can make the sweet foam froth sculpture in the cup look so tempting. Enjoy! I did!

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp for a quick coffee run near a friend's apartment. It looked like they mainly had espresso based drinks - one of their "specialties" being the Valrhona which was a dark chocolate mocha. I liked how they had a variety of sweetners (such as honey and simple syrup) you could add in at the side bar where they keep the lids, stirrers, napkins, etc. Overall the inside was clean and service was good, and there were some tables and chairs outside as well.

Yelp
Convenient location and the coffee and staff are always friendly and helpful. I don't come here as much as I would like to but its a great space.

Yelp
Barista is one of the three or four coffee shops that I don't feel bad spending the money on. I know coffee price has gotten crazy these days so whether it be at a bad place or a good place you're looking at three dollars minimum for just plain old coffee... So being the person I am, I definitely will avoid those daily coffee trips as much as possible but sometimes I definitely want something and barista is always a safe bet. When was your standard coffee this time, but was a little bit disappointed it wasn't as good as it normally is and I did end up adding a little bit of half-and-half, which normally I don't have to do for barista. Granted, you have more selection when you get a bar drink than when you get a standard coffee so that might've changed it. So for that reason, I gave it one less star just because their standard drip coffee was not as amazing as it normally is. But again coffee is very personal. I understand that some people love oily dark rose where I can't stand them so it might've been a five star for the person behind me, but I would say one star minus because I had to add, a little bit of cream.

Sap P.

Yelp
Barista is a well known local favorite! It is really strong coffee and really good quality. Limited options for flavors compared to other shops I feel, but it is a great coffee spot and has seating indoors with a nice ambiance and good staff in both locations I've visited.

Yelp
7/23 at around 2:15pm, I was greeted by the worlds worst barista. Before you cast me as some "suburban guy who doesn't get it." I've lived in Downtown for 17 years, I understand pdx hipster coffee vibes and the novelty of a distant and aloof Barista. This person was terrible. Hated their job, rude, and entitled. So to the owners- please know that the person who was the Barista at this location at this time was awful, slow, rude, unfriendly. I had to walk out after her condescending attitude. I've been a faithful customer for decades.... No problem, I walked to Umbria where I was treated human.

Yelp
Simple. They have good coffees. Not a crazy sugar laden menu of weirdness or drinks that hide the flavor of the fantastic coffee that they sell. They have a few crafted drinks, sure, but the reason why I enjoyed Barista is that they had different pulls of espressos from different high quality roasters. My wife decided on the Camber roast and I went with the Barista Roasted Blend. The brighter the better for me, and the one they recommended was bright and tasty and exactly what I was hoping for. The parking in the area is all paid, which I get, but it can wrankle to pay more for parking than the drink I plan on buying. Congrats to a city that can make more money doing nothing than the businesses that supply all of the sales and income for the government to tax. The space is coffee to go more than coffee for here. They do have a small handful of tables and even a nice restroom with a coded door. But it's really not a place for a meet cute with your latest tinder swipe. I would return for the amazing coffee. I probably wont though because there are so many other coffee places to try when I zip through the Portland area.

Yelp
This spot is super easy to spot. It's got a few outdoor/indoor seating options in addition to being near some neat stores. The staff is super friendly and helpful. If you've got any questions, they'll have the answer for you! This shop was clean and well kept. I'll have to try out a food item the next time I stop by as I only grabbed a hazelnut latte which was quite flavorful. Maybe too good as I didn't even noticed the double shot of espresso within. Thanks for a good first impression!

Yelp
Never heard two baristas talk about Pearl Jam so much. I kinda wanted to talk to them about the song Evolution.. That one's my favorite by PJ. The coffee hit the spot nicely and I drank one in the space and got one to go when we left, so you know I was digging it.. In fact I might give it a, "TEN," .. Bad Pearl Jam Joke!
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
I come here at least once a month for a seasonal "latte". I love this part of the Pearl with the brick and elevated walkways. I don't like that much milk in my drink so I am usually asking for a 5oz capp to be made with the seasonal ingredient! I have been ordering capps around town for a year or so and I always order it the same way (I even asked Morgan - THE MORGAN, at Keeper how to order it to get it the way I want and they said "A dry cappuccino"), by asking for a "dry cappuccino, with stiff foam". You'd be surprised, well maybe you wouldn't, by how often that comes out as a latte. A wet, non-foamy, hot milk and espresso drink. What I want is a stiff, crackly foam that can be sipped through (one time at another shop, the foam was so stiff I didn't get any foam in the drink, the only time I thought it was too dry, too stiff). At Barista, they have a good grasp of drinks and I always get a drink that has milk in the espresso, but not that much, with a good cap of foam that isn't hard but isn't going to dissolve in 30 seconds either. I used to not like them because their menu is intimidating (no flavors, no fun drinks, no color, talking about beans) and the people can come across as cold at some locations, sometimes. But now I feel like we're simpatico and if I describe what I want, they honor my $6 drink and make it right. So I guess I've really come around on ole Barista. This is my favorite location and when I go on the weekends, I always see dogs, I usually like the music and they have let me bring a personal cup which is nice for zero-waste.

Yelp
99% of the time i make my own coffee at home. But occasionally i crave a hazelnut latte from here. It is worth the drive and any parking hassles! Looks like I am getting one tomorrow.
google avatar

Isabel W.

Yelp
Seats offered "inside" and outside. They sell beans that are from their local coffee shop and outside, as well as other merchandise. Each of the bags were $19. I recently learned that the hazelnut is Oregon's state but so when I saw they had a hazelnut latte I knew I had to try it. They offer alternative milk options (their oat milk is oatly!) but it is extra charge vs the other coffee shops I noticed didn't charge anything to switch. Even still, I got the oatly and I got the latte iced. It was pretty amazing actually. It was nutty, creamy bc oatly is just the best oat milk and the espresso cut it nicely. I really enjoyed my iced latte, would definitely go back.

Yelp
The coffee was good but the service was rude. The workers seemed annoyed and were short with me when I asked a question.
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
I've tried to like their drinks since they're a 2 min walk from me. Unfortunately, after trying several lattes, this spot is a pass for me. The drinks always taste like warm milk no matter what I order. I just don't understand how they're popular with so many better options so close by. The staff is lovely and welcoming, so that's nice, but I won't be returning.
google avatar

Mo D.

Yelp
Was very impressed with their coffee. Great flavor espresso, and there was plenty of places you could sit. They also sell really nice beans.
google avatar

Dionne S.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and service. I visited several times during my trip and each time it was consistent and enjoyable. The location is small but offers some seating and additional tables and chairs outside and in the courtyard.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Is this coffee worth the price? That is the pivotal question. I say yes, because: 1. The coffee is remarkable. 2. My buddy Chad who knows everything about coffee, far more than I ever could, tells me this coffee is fantastic. 3. The vibe is pretty cool and casual here. This is the Pearl District. They could be way more uptight and pleased with themselves. 4. So my $4.50 latte should be $3.50. I can handle it, and I've just had a nice little corner of my day.
google avatar

Yelp
When visiting Portland, coffee is a must and there are so many different coffee shops downtown. We were staying in the Portland District and after shopping and visiting Powell books on a Sunday afternoon, we were in dire need of coffee. So we visited Barista which is a small little shop located within a building that's right next to a brewery. There are some tables right in front of the shop both indoor and outdoor. Service was friendly, I opted for the seasonal Japanese Sesame Latte and my friend got a Vanilla Latte. Their small size has 2 shots of espresso within it. We didn't wait too long and their coffee/espresso is really good! Strong taste, not too sweet and cute latte art. I don't think I substituted my milk with anything but coffee is pretty pricy, around $5 for a drink. They come without a cap and there are caps that you can put on. They have water stations too where the creamers, sugar, and lids are. Would recommend if you need a little pick me up or just want to chill around the Pearl District before or after shopping.

Yelp
Yummy, creamy, Cortado made with some heart! Nice smooth flavor and not super acidic beans.
google avatar

Maite M.

Yelp
Delicious iced oat milk lattes with plenty of seating, what more could you want? I appreciate that their menu states they have oat milk and it's actually in stock.

Yelp
Barista was the first coffee spot I tried here prior to my move...This was about 2 1/2 years ago and I instantly fell in love. My go-to is their Oregon Hazelnut Latte with oat milk. I also love trying out their seasonal specials as well. I've had their Pumpkin and Caramel Ginger Lattes. The pumpkin is very subtle and not your typical PSL flavor. The ginger in the Caramel Ginger is pretty strong but I enjoy the flavor of ginger so I didn't mind. They have a fairly straightforward menu so it's pretty easy to navigate through. Their 8 oz is small but I find it to be just the perfect size for my personal preference. The Pearl location has a walk up window right out front but you can also enter in the building for their other entrance. Absolutely love Barista, one of my all time faves!
google avatar

Vicki L.

Yelp
Decided to try their honey marzipan latte, which is one of their signatures. It's the perfect combination of different flavors such as almond, flower, honey and butter. Highly recommend trying it out if you're feeling a bit adventurous. The only downsize is that the portion is a bit small for the size. There are street parking available nearby.
google avatar

Logan M.

Yelp
Batista has excellent, high-quality coffee with limited options on the menu. But they do everything well, allowing the flavor of the coffee to shine through. It's pricey and usually busy which speaks again to the quality of their products and service.
google avatar

Damkee ..

Yelp
One of the coffee shops I visit whenever I am in Portland. The taste is bold, and every sip is enjoyable. There are a few locations throughout the city. For this spot, it's nice how there is space both inside and outside to sit down with your cup of coffee.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
You must try their vanilla latte or vanilla-based drinks because they make their own vanilla! Doesn't matter if the drinks are hot or cold. It's very smooth and lovely. On top of this, this location's exterior is wonderful. The seating outside is great. Go here for great coffee vibes.
google avatar

Danna H.

Yelp
Located in the entrance/lobby area of what seems like an office building. Easy to find and there's tables set up indoors and outdoors. Can't go wrong with any of their coffees but a must-try is their hazelnut latte!! I prefer mine with soy milk as I like the nutty tones to come through more and the drink itself wasn't overly sweet. We came around 11am on a Saturday and unfortunately, they didn't have many pastries left. Would definitely come back for another cup of hazelnut latte though!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome place. Great coffee. Great service. This is to get to 41 words so my review seems like a proper review.
google avatar

Al C.

Yelp
Great espresso stop - I don't like my coffee too fruity so this place was good for me. Normally I'm not a mocha fan, but the Valhrona dark chocolate they use was fantastic- rich and natural tasting
google avatar

Yelp
Whenever I hit up portland I always swing by this place. Terrific baristas, amazing lattes, and exquisite service. Hands down, a must for any coffee lover out there. The burritos on the other hand, perhaps stay away from.
google avatar

Todd M.

Yelp
I'm allowed to love two coffee shops equally, it's Portland. And this is one of them. Why do I love thee? Easy. Their Oregon Hazelnut Latte. It's all I drink here. It's like the Pacific Northwest in a cup. Plus the baristas at this Barista are awesome. They're super friendly, remember my order, play great music, and are always down to help me get my caffeine fix.
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Always a long line but it moves fast! Super good coffee, I have tried it all and am never let down! Also has a cute aesthetic
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
5 stars for the mocha. It's all I've tried on this trip... when you find something you love SO MUCH, why stray? My husband says the lattes are great too.... that's all he orders here. Walk up window perfect for these CRAZY times... they could use a better awning for rainy days, but the umbrellas works for 1 person with the 6ft rule in place... DEFINITELY will be back... probably tomorrow. ;)
google avatar

Quinn A.

Yelp
I'm a little bit in love with the handsome barista who was singing. Honestly, if you cant fall a little bit in love like that then you might have a busted heart. Get help. Peace, love, and lattes.
google avatar

Faye L.

Yelp
This was a last minute visit before I left for the airport as I wanted to try a famous coffee stop before I left. Friend suggested Barista. The location was cute and ordering was simple. We both opted for a small Americano which was made in front of us. I'm not sure about the price as he paid . The condiment station is nearby and offers a few sugars/creams. I thought the Americano was incredibly strong. Usually I drink it black with no sugar or cream but had to add cream to the version here. Not a bad thing but the Americano didn't taste as smooth. Glad I'm able to say I visited this coffee shop and hopefully will be back to try other items.
google avatar

Hooman D.

Yelp
Tasty coffee (Oregon hazelnut latte) but it wasn't served hot enough to us! We asked them to pour some hot milk to compensate for the initial temperature. The ambiance is laid back and good.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee drinks made with great coffee beans, from various roasters. (4/5 green stars) Made a detour to visit Barista and had a latte and it was very good. That's all really :) I'm also giving Barista 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * Coffee beans are from roasters that have direct trade relationships with farmers and most encourage sustainable growing conditions. * For example, Intelligentsia, a pioneer in the direct trade movement. * Or Stumptown, who pays up to four times commodity prices for their green coffee and use compostable packaging. * Other roasters represented at Barista, including Ceremony and Ritual are also responsible about sourcing beans. * I believe that Barista's regular milk is not organic, unless they've changed this. * However, they do have alternatives such as rice and almond milk. * Their mochas are made with Valrhona chocolate. Ever written a green star review? Please contact me if you have done so, or if you'd like to know more!

Marcus W.

Yelp
Came in 9 mins before close after fighting traffic to get there, lazy barista made up some reason why he couldn't make a mocha because he shut the bar down because they were going to close in 9 mins.

Harrison E.

Yelp
I used to love this place but after today, getting treated like a stupid "newbie" person, I don't think I will be returning for a bit. Sad cuz I've actually been going to this location for many years now. From one customer service worker to another. Your attitude and how you treat the customer matters. You're only asking to be treated unwell if you treat someone like sh*t. Anyways really wish I didn't need to write this but seriously be kinder to people.
google avatar

Lissa G.

Yelp
Nice afternoon pick me up! The Cortado is a nice way to taste the quality of their beans, but still have a little bit of milk. The service was very friendly and there were a couple people there who were clearly regulars. This specific location has an interesting set up. The shop itself is located in an indoor, atrium-like spot. But most of the atrium seems to belong to Barista, since they have tables, silverware/bussing station, and water available for customers. It was a cute, relaxing spot to sit in. The downside is that it doesn't feel like you're in a coffee shop, which I did kind of want. Nevertheless, the coffee was good!
google avatar

Erik S.

Yelp
Couple different choices for espresso. Temp was a little hot. Texture and microfoam were very good.
google avatar

Jacob O.

Yelp
This cute little coffee shop offers many different types of coffee including their own specialty teas and other brewed drinks. The cashier recommended the hazelnut coffee which was alright. The espresso coffee in the cortado had an interesting natural sweet taste to it. They were both drinks we had to adjust to but overall enjoyed by the end. The customer service is at a 5 star easily but for the coffee itself it's a solid 4. Two employees were running this small shop and it didn't seem to be busy when we were there near closing time. Located inside the great gadsby building, it took us a little bit to actually find it. This place was recommended by locals and is probably the go-to spot for tourists to get a feel for Portland coffee.
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
Favorite coffee spot in Portland. Everything we had on multiple trips over the weekend was great. Excellent drip, equally as good espresso drinks (oat milk latte is amazing), tasty pastries, and two vegetarian breakfast burrito options! Highly recommend this spot - totally superior to the local competition.
google avatar

May C.

Yelp
5 stars for coffee (my favorite so far compared to Stumptown, Casestudy and Coava) 2 stars for service/attitude. In a town full of great coffee shops it is difficult to stand out but Barista is the one. Offering up espresso shot that is bold strong and unapologetic, I had one of the best Americano during my short stay in Portland that included over 8 top coffee joints. By far my favorite cup of coffee is from here but also my least favorite in terms of customer experience as the barista was cold and unfriendly. Simple eye contact, smile, a bit of chit chat or some basic barista manners (Starbucks training anyone) could be an easy fix and bump this review up to 5 stars. Space wise the place is well curated offering a movie scene level of coziness and style unmatched by others. I really enjoyed this place and hopefully upon future visits the barista improves on her attitude and I could give it the 5 star that I wish to give.
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
Great coffee spot to take a break from touring the city. Great coffee and tea selections. Very spacious and plenty of seating. The area has several interesting shops and restaurants to check out as well.
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
Not really a huge fan of any of the Barista locations in town...unless you're looking for that pretentious barista attitude, then this place might be perfect. I can almost expect snooty service like clockwork at all their locations...and I've been to some pretty snooty 3rd wave coffee shops. Every time I press that 20% tip on that machine, I instantly regret it. Giving this location an extra star cause they do have fantastic outdoor seating along 13th.
google avatar

Reese M.

Yelp
While visiting Portland, I wanted to have a great cup of coffee...and I achieved that here at Barista! Everything about this place screams COOL *Incredible customer service. Something that you don't experience all the time in L.A. *Super cool ambiance. This was my first time visiting an actual coffee house with a real coffee house feel. *Quality coffee. Need I say more?
