13 New Metro Detroit Bars to Check Out This Spring

"Dogs and booze can co-exist on the eastside at this new beer garden specifically designed with people’s best friend in mind. Barkside opened the weekend of November 4 at Kercheval and Van Dyke in West Village. Humans can order craft beers, cans of wine or spritzers, as well as n/a beverages from indoor and outdoor areas. Dogs will appreciate socializing — leash-free — with other canines in a park-like setting." - Serena Maria Daniels

Cafe Prince Cafe in Core City sells raw carrots as snacks | Eater Detroit

"According to The Detroit News, Barkside is slated to open late this summer at Kercheval and Van Dyke in West Village as a dog-centric beer garden where humans can order craft beers, cans of wine or spritzers and nonalcoholic beverages from indoor and outdoor areas while dogs socialize leash-free in a park-like setting, positioning itself as the city’s first beer garden designed specifically with people’s best friends in mind." - Serena Maria Daniels

Slider Restaurant Relocates to West Village, Prepares for Menu Preview | Eater Detroit

"After nearly a decade of starts and stops since the project began in 2016, this fast-casual slider concept has settled into a former bank on Kercheval Avenue in West Village and aims to open as soon as October, pending no further delays. Founding partner LJ Nelson and a six-person ownership group now include general manager Justice Akuezue and chef Davante Burnley, who are co-owners and will manage day-to-day operations; the pair also collaborate through their pop-up and catering business, the Exchange. The vision remains a family-friendly neighborhood restaurant and local beer-focused bar serving an affordable, eclectic menu of sliders and sides—preview items include a Southwest black bean slider with avocado aioli, jalapeño, tomato, and pepper jack; a Pub Chicken slider with fried chicken, bacon, cheddar cheese sauce, and pickles; seasoned steak fries; and pineapple rum wings. Pandemic-era planning has produced features intended to increase comfort and safety: the full ground floor will include a carryout walk-up pickup area (rather than a drive-thru), expanded outdoor seating and a beer-garden-style green space in the parking lot, retail sales of beers, spice blends and sauces for at-home cooking, and eventual local delivery. Ahead of the official opening the team is hosting preview carryout pop-ups to gather neighborhood feedback—including a July 25 preview from 4–8 p.m. at 7960 Kercheval Ave that required online registration—and the owners say the concept was designed as a better alternative to fast food for Detroiters with hopes to expand to additional city locations over time." - Brenna Houck

Barkside is the best! Great vibe, good drinks! The Rufferees are super attentive to all the pups, making sure everyone plays safely and has a great time. Love the events they do, especially the nail wagon (nail trimming) ever first Saturday of the month! Highly recommend. 🐾

My dog and I absolutely love Barkside. It is an experience that provides pure joy and is a pleasant way to decompress after work. The staff is friendly, do a great job of managing the pup-mania happening, there is always good music providing a fun & uplifting vibe, friendly patrons, the facility is cute, clean and well maintained. I’m so proud to be a member and love to see the team/company expanding.

We love the Barkside! The Rufferees jeep everyone in line and are fun to tailgate to. You can tell that everyone that works here loves their jobs. You can grab a cocktail, let your dog play and socialize AND someone else picks up the poop? Yes, please! Make sure to tip well when you order a drink since everyone splits the tips.

If you have a dog that is social (and so are you) - this is the best spot in town! Not only is it great for dogs and humans, it’s impeccably run. They have caring and attentive staff whether it’s taking care of the dogs or taking care of the humans. Love Barkside!!!

Every single person that works here is kind, respectful, and genuinely cares about their job. Not to mention they're paying attention to what's going on and they're very knowledgeable about dogs who are clearly about to have an issue. This is my dog Scarlett's favorite place, so much so that as soon as we're five minutes away she's crying and barking- then dragging me through the parking lot when we arrive. It's definitely more of a community because so many people have memberships and come consistently. Everyone that comes pays attention to their dogs and are really solid pet owners. I love it, truly, and I guarantee these are about to rapidly spread across the country.

This is a great place to check out. There is ample seating options and the place is remarkably clean! Shout out to the rufferees who are keeping the dogs safe as well as maintaining the cleanliness of the patio and yard. They are really what makes the difference between barkside and your local dog park (where you need to be a lot more high alert at all times). My dog Copper is not much of a dogs-dog. She is here for the people. So many folks gave her pets and attention it was so nice to see other dog lovers give her some love throughout the day. Drinks were good there is even an option to have the drinks delivered to your seat which is handy. I am a bit picky because I didn't want to drink alcohol and I dont really like pop. There was still a good variety for me to pick from during my visit so I really appreciated that!! Although they dont serve food, there is an option for free delivery from a neighboring Mexican business which is convenient. I did not order anything but noticed a lot of other folks enjoying their meal during their visit. We will definitely be back again.

I moved to the neighborhood this year and have brought my dog to Barkside most days since we've lived here--that's over 100 times--and every visit has been an awesome experience. It's rare for any business to consistently exceed expectations! But that's what keeps us going back, almost every day. There is a large outdoor area covered in wood chips for the dogs to play and multiple "rufferies" working at all times to redirect the dogs whenever their play gets too rowdy. In every day I've visited there's never been a scary fight. Plenty of seating for humans, good music playing, and if there is a sports game on, the game is playing on TVs outside and inside. The owners themselves are always picking up poop and making sure the space is clean and fun for everyone. The indoor area is also nice and climate controlled. It's a good place for the dogs to socialize in inclement weather. The bar tender is always friendly and the drinks are great; espresso drinks, draught beer, and cocktails. They don't serve food, but La Fonda, a restaurant just a couple doors down, makes exquisite Mexican food and delivers to Barkside for free. They offer a lot of seasonal activities like pumpkin painting and a trivia night that I have not yet attended. I have met neighbors I otherwise wouldn't have, as well as folks who drive in from suburbs on the weekends. Barkside is a great "third place" for us to spend an hour with our dog and family after the work day. They also have a day camp for dogs Monday to Friday. I have dropped my dog off for day camp once and I received a video of him having a blast. I would definitely do it again. I have also seen how well the day camp dogs are treated when I stop by in the afternoons.

This is my favorite place in all of Detroit. The owners and staff members are fantastic, knowing the dogs have their records on file makes me comfortable, the coffee drinks are great, the cocktails and beer options are on point, you can order in food, and you have indoor, hybrid, and outdoor space. Even when I don’t have my dog with me - this is a great place to meet people and to lift your spirits.

Yelp
Absolutely what we need in metro Detroit and we need many more BarkSides! Mine was super cautious & intimidated but they have staff that know more than we do about dogs and within a half hour, she was running around and enjoying this little dog world- really good for her development and socialization Also love the coffee and bar option- Wonderful way to spend an afternoon with your best friend We were just trying it out for today (Mondays are only $5) but this is great for our dog and will become a regular activity Oh and $2 pup cups for the win!

Yelp
Best dog bar in metro Detroit!! The ruffarees are doing a great job keeping pups happy and safe. QR codes on the tables allow you to get drinks without losing sight of your Pup.

Yelp
Woo-hoo! The Eastside finally has a dog park that's also indoor/outdoor with drinks for the humans and plenty of fresh water for the dogs! You have to register your dog with their vaccine records and either buy a day pass or a membership but if you have a dog that needs activity and likes being social, this is going to be so great when it's snowy or rainy or even on a beautiful day like today. Plenty of staff helping maintain the peace and refilling the water bowls but, you may still have to look out for dogs that can't take a hint... There was one dog today that just kept wanting to hump my dog and his owner was not doing anything to curtail it and the staff was trying to intervene...I told them, just let my dog learn him but I'm sure it was making them nervous to see how that would play out... So we did our best to keep them separated. My dog has been to dog bars and dog parks all across the country but other dogs may be less socialized so just keep that in mind. Other than that, it was a good time. And because I got an annual membership, I don't care that we couldn't stay that long. I have a theory anyway, that of dogs are seven times as fast as humans, then being at the dog bar for a half hour is like being at your favorite bar for 3ish hours and that's plenty, right? Good selection of beers and seltzers. They will have wine eventually but not yet. I got some blackberry vodka seltzer thing and that was enough for a quick visit today. I appreciated the little refresh area with doggie perfume and towels. Ample parking on site. People without dogs can just go hang too so, the lot may seem full but it doesn't mean the building is full of dogs. Also, assuming there are neighborhood people that can walk there, so again, the fullness of the parking lot might not represent the number of dogs or people inside. Overall, very impressed and excited to welcome Barkside to the Eastside!

Yelp
I came here with some dog friends and had the best time! I pre registered online and that process was simple and easy. When I arrived, they were able to quickly pull up my dog's account and register for a day pass for the day. (Weekdays $10, weekends $25, Mondays $5). While I was there, I was able to order a drink but you can also get coffee and there are water refreshment stations around. There are workers there to help manage the dogs to ensure that the dogs play well so at time, it is nice to enjoy the company but also the weather on particularly beautiful days. Overall, I would recommend!

Yelp
First visit today. Dog loved it. Staff was very friendly and helpful. $8 for a draft beer. Large selection of drinks available. Will be back!
