"Those seeking brunch or a good charcuterie board to pair with an excellent selection of beers are well advised to visit this gastropub. The burger earns raves, and the fun of building your own meat and cheese board cannot be overrated. Finish it all off with a cookie board." - Courtney E. Smith

"Spending a day on the square in Denton can yield some fantastic music and book finds from Recycled, a cute souvenir from the 3 Wishes gift shop, and a long afternoon of craft beers and build-your-own charcuterie boards at Barley & Board. Or, if you don’t like beer, there’s a fun cocktail menu and mimosa flights." - Courtney E. Smith

Google
i’ve visited Barley & Board quite a number of times. i love the interior design.. it’s a blend of rustic & modern.🌟 their menu is constantly changing about every month or so to explore & experiment with new flavors. that’s what makes this place so unique. they also have a personal chef in house who helps guests customize or prepare their dishes to make the guest comfortable & happy with what they are eating!! for me i love avocado + extra veggies so they tend to add avocado + veggies to any of my dishes!!🤩😋desserts are always so amazing & any food you get is lovely!! i love that all dishes have a blend & fusion of flavors. it’s an amazing experience every time i come here. the ambiance is perfect, especially if you’re wanting to dine alone. i highly recommend you visit this place & try something you’ve never had before!!🤭👏🏼

We absolutely love the food and atmosphere at Barley & Board, however, the bar staff is terrible. This is based of many visits with different bartenders, yet had the same service across the board. Ultimately, you feel like you are bothering them. A good bartender works with their head up, constantly scanning and anticipating their guests needs. This last visit we received our food, I tried for ten minutes to get a bartenders attention for some hot sauce. No luck, finally just flagged down a server who happily brought it to me. We ate with empty drinks, never approached for a second round. Then sat with empty plates stacked in front of us and was brought the check, again, never offered a second round. So we just paid and left. I write this review as a heads up to the owner, poor service is not only a bad reflection on the establishment but a massive loss for the house financially. I hope that this inspires them to do better. (There were two bartender working, we were two of seven total people sitting at the bar and the restaurant was not overwhelmingly busy). On a positive note, the kitchen never misses. The menu is stellar and I am yet to have a dish that isn’t 100% satisfying. Pictured: Chicken & Waffles from the brunch menu.

Google
Barley & Board is quickly becoming my local “go to” spot for a quick cocktail and bite to eat! The atmosphere and staff are always pleasant. The drink menus are updated regularly and never disappoint. The charcuterie boards are elegant and filling. Great place for a date night, or they can accommodate large parties. My wife and I like to take break from walking the square and pop in and grab a seat at the bar for a refreshing cocktail. If you are in the area and looking for something upscale you need to check out Barley & Board!

Google
Service was great! We both enjoyed the Refresher drinks (sorry forgot to take pic of menu). Atmosphere was relaxing. $18 Burger was greasy and lacked seasoning. One of the managers brought us spicy nuts 👍🏾 and asked us how the food was and appreciated our honesty regarding the burger he recommended the chicken sandwich. The $17 chicken sandwich was the better choice. For me, one half was seasoned and cooked well, the other half was a bit tough. For the price, I expected more. Overall, disappointed because we came here because my friend enjoyed the burger when we here last time; over a year ago.

Google
Lovely atmosphere and the food was good but not great. The board I received had dried out meat and poor pickled items that were bland. Although we appreciated the waiter checking on us, he interrupted four times in a conversation without any consideration for the flow of the interaction. Not the best service and annoying.

Google
Overall a really great place in Denton. The space is so well done. The staff is nice and the food is good. (June 2024) went on a Sunday around lunch/brunch time. They don’t do a specific brunch menu but they have a great burger on the menu and they happily obliged when I asked if they could put a fried egg on top. Highly recommend the burger! (April 2024) Went recently after their menu change and enjoyed everything we tried. Just one of those dinners where I left bloated for quite a while and my hands got really puffy which just tells me there was a lot of salt, etc. but enjoyed it nonetheless, I just cook at home a lot and can be sensitive to how food is cooked out (what salt and oils, etc they use). The average person I’m sure wouldn’t notice. But for me, that’s the only downside to my visit. Tried the mushroom barley soup - was good, a bit salty … I would’ve preferred a higher mushroom to barley ratio (it was more barley than mushroom) but good flavor. The rye bread crostini with crème fraiche it came with was really good! Split a salad and sandwich. Would definitely be back for the ensalada cesar. Great flavor, light and fresh. Came with Romain, corn, avocado, cornbread croutons, cotija cheese, pickled Fresno chiles, and a cilantro Caesar dressing. Also got the Texan sandwich (pastrami, chopped brisket, pickles, pimento cheese with chips). Really good! Thought the ratio of bread to ingredients inside the sandwich was good. Filled me up fast … the half a sandwich was plenty for me! Good homemade chips. Also enjoyed the tequila smash. I like their menu of smash cocktails, simple but good and a good price.

Google
We go about once a year for a special occasion. It's pricy, but a great restaurant! The food is always delicious! The atmosphere is really nice! The mixed drinks are always delicious!! Definitely try their specialty drinks!!! The menu changed and there's a whole new selection to choose from.

Google
Overpriced, and the food was unfortunately mediocre. We got a wagyu burger, the beef was nice but it was served w basic processed cheese. The ricotta cavatelli flavors didn’t work great together and the brisket was pretty firm. The location is great and atmosphere is nice albeit generic. The service was good and our servers were kind and helpful.

Sarah P.

Yelp
Our server Matt was great! He had answers to our questions as to why certain things were taken off the menu and helpful on drink selections. There have been recent changes to the menu we weren't aware of... and weren't the biggest fans of either. However, the atmosphere and setting is always spot on at Barley & Board.

Yelp
We came here for a biz trip and had a great group dinner. A few things stood out, very cool industrial interior, great cocktails and amazing board of selection or build on your own. I enjoyed my salmon with basmati rice. Very interesting combo, love the texture of rice and pan fired salmon, crispy outside soft inside.

Will i.

Yelp
The good: asparagus was cooked well... non alcoholic drink was tasty, but more on that later. The building was clean and looked nice. The meh: so I had the wagyu steak. I asked for medium rare, which it was cooked properly. Buy it was very tough meat. For something that's supposed to be tender it was not. But the taste wasn't bad. As I said the mixed drink was good, but had way too much black berry added... I basically chewed half the drink down. Service was ok but I sat at the bar. The bad: potatoes were cold and flavorless. They were out of salmon, which was a real shame since the steak was such a disappointment. Final: with a full menu this place might be good. But there are many options around the square and I'd pick a different one.

Yelp
Mother board was awesome. A few olives were left over- meat, cheese, and sauce were devoured. I didn't like the beer selection too much, however, I'm sure it changes often. Black lager turned out to be decent. Staff were very friendly and it was clean. Comfortable atmosphere. Would go back again and recommend anyone in the area to give it a go.

Yelp
We went here with a large group. Reserved using Resy. They were flexible in seating our party of 12. We had the burgers, pastrami sandwich, and chicken pot pie (deconstructed). Food tasted fine. They are known for their cocktails. Food complemented them well. Service was good and attentive.

Rhianna L.

Yelp
Always a good place to go for the charcuterie boards. My husband also had the risotto and it was very good! Their AC is struggling in this heat tho

Kim D.

Yelp
Came here for a friend's birthday. The decor is very nice and there are plenty of tables to accommodate a larger party. I do think that the echo-y shape of the building combined with music played a bit too loud negatively affected my experience. I felt like we all had to shout to place our orders. Despite this, the staff did a great job of getting our orders correct. The food was very good, with a nice variety of food great for sharing. The ingredients were good quality as well. The prices seemed a bit much for what we got, but we all enjoyed our meal. With a few tweaks, this plave could really be special, I'm glad we tried it!

Yelp
Amazing happy hour, great service, great vibe, delicious but expensive food! Love coming here.

Yelp
I used to go to this place all the time with my family, and we LOVED it. I immediately had my go-to entree picked out (soy glazed salmon), and we couldn't leave without having their pecan pie bread pudding for dessert. A couple months later, however, they removed the salmon dish I loved and added two new fish entrees in its place (pecan crusted trout and a plain grilled salmon), which was annoying, but I thought the trout dish was good enough of a replacement for me, so I got over it. Well, another month or two go by, and they remove the trout dish, so now I don't particularly love any of their entrees. EVEN THEN, however, I was still willing to go back because I loved their bread pudding so much, but sadly, they decided to remove that too, which was my last straw. That was my favorite dessert ever. It was amazing. Perfection even! My family and I all yearned for that dessert, and they replaced it with a mediocre peach pudding dish that doesn't even compare. So basically, long story short, none of us will be coming back because of that bread pudding. Side note: We also noticed that the quality of their cookies went down dramatically, and for about the same price, you could get a bigger and better cookie from crumbl, so i recommend skipping those if you go.

Yelp
I was invited to come to dinner here for a friend's birthday, and was excited to finally try Barley and Board. The restaurant itself is very adorable, and has plenty of opportunities to capture cute photos. Our group was well looked after, and our server continuously came in to check on us. At one point, the manager also came to check on how we were doing, and let us know if we were looking to do anything else they had a whiskey bar upstairs, and downstairs was a speakeasy Latin club! Our group found it to be very cool, and wished we could've went in to check them out but couldn't stay out late. Everyone at our table enjoyed their food, but I think we all loved our drinks more than anything. I ordered their chicken sandwich with only jalapeños and a side of potato chunks. The sandwich tasted great and I finished it entirely, but I was incredibly disappointed by the potato chunks. I don't enjoy eating potato chips with my sandwiches, so I asked if there was a French fry substitution available. Our server let me know they no longer make French fries, but they could provide me with plain potato chunks. I agreed to the substitution, but struggled eating some of them because they were baked for so long the skins were rock hard on some of the chunks. I had to scoop out soft portions of the potatoes which made a bit of a mess on my plate. I wish they could've been better as the substitution did result in a $4 up charge. I ordered a vodka smash for my cocktail, and it was incredibly delicious. It had some sweetness to it, and I loved the fruit the cocktail had. At the end of our meal, our server did ask my friend celebrating her birthday what dessert she'd like to enjoy, and gave her a complimentary new s'mores dessert the restaurant was offering. My friend shared with us, and we all found the dessert to be incredibly delicious. All in all, the experience was nice, but I do think this establishment would be better for some mimosas and light snacking with your friends on the square.

Yelp
So glad I picked this place for lunch. Amazing food, drinks, and service!!!! Grilled cheese & tomato soup!!!

Linda H.

Yelp
We hadn't been to Barley and Board in a bit. They totally changed their menu and we were not happy with the new one. The food was not that great, not like it used to be. Not sure I'll go back.

Vanessa G.

Yelp
Fun environment and great food. Definitely check it out try the flights and the Asada board.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their choices! Can't wait to come back for regular visits! Service was prompt, the restaurant is beautiful! Food was delicious. We had a "beat chicken sandwich EVER" vote. The pick 2 charcuterie was the perfect snack board for the crew.

Tonya M.

Yelp
Really great date place. The food and drinks are great! The menu maybe more geared for adults, and a bit pricey, so I would not take a picky eater here. Love the atmosphere and proximity onnthr square to explore Denton.

Lewis H.

Yelp
From the first minute we spoke to our server Mike we knew this was going to be an amazing experience. Mike was immediately knowledgeable on drinks. He then gave very good food recommendations. I chose the Cuban sandwich, being from Florida, Mike wanted to see how they stack up to the original Cuban sandwich. My Girl friend ordered the Pastrami sandwich. Neither choice disappointed! The Cuban was amazing full of flavor a real treat, it comes with a dipping sauce, as I recall the original ones don't come with, no need for it. The pastrami was amazing also, it comes on a herb bread, unfortunately the bread overpowers the amazing meat, to make This the best version it can be a nice marbled rye would complement the great taste of the meat! I would still recommend both with the nod to the Cuban. I really think Mike may have been the best server I've had ever! This is a must visit location

Lysette R.

Yelp
Great location right on the square. Beautiful decor. The ambiance is very cool and the bathrooms were awesome. Our server was very helpful in providing suggestions to charcuterie newbies. The mimosa flight was perfect and the board pairings were delish. Looking forward to trying them again for a full meal. Perfect place for a first date or to stop for a drink while shopping around the square (like we did).

Natasha H.

Yelp
We came to Denton square to walk and take some pictures. We saw this place and decided to have a bite and some drinks. Chris was our waiter and he was great. Knowledgeable, attentive and very friendly. We started with the lazy salad. It was greens, pecans, feta, dried cherries, green apples and a sweet vinaigrette. I loved it. It was very tasty, refreshing and filling. I will try to recreate it at home. We also had a board with Jamon Serrano, local pastrami, cheddar and gouda cheese. It comes with bread, a delicious berry jam, mustard, pickled vegetable, olives, honey pecan mix and salty nuts. Amazing!! Everything was so fresh and high quality ingredients. The mimosas were fantastic. I definitely coming back to try some of the big plates and the sandwiches looked good as well. They have a location in plano near us so probably will visit that location pretty soon. The ambiance was very hipster cool lol! Location was right in the center of the square. Check it out, you won't regret it!

Naomi L.

Yelp
Wow! What a change. We used to come here 3-4 times a month for either breakfast or dinner and we loved it. Today we learned they no longer serve breakfast, ok, not the end of the world but too bad because it was excellent. We started with the hummus board, which wasn't "bad" but was seriously spicy and that should have been noted some where on the menu notes. I had the mushroom risotto and I can honestly say I doubt I've ever had anything so awful. The vegetables were so hard I had to spit several into my napkin, I never found a mushroom and the over salting and cheese made the dish taste like a can of bad "spaghetti-o's". My husband had the roasted chicken which used to be served on a platter or board. It's now in a bowl making it pretty difficult to eat. But aside from that he left most of his because his mouth was burning from how seriously over salted the entire dish was. I'm not sure if owners have changed or it's just a bad menu change, but sadly this is off my list of places to go forever now.

Twana S.

Yelp
Mike was a Wonderful waiter. Pork tenderloin is yummy!!! Love the vibe, very relaxed. Been frequenting this place since they opened!

DeAnne F.

Yelp
Twice we've made an effort to eat here. Twice the staff was rude and stuck up. First time we left as we had a different crisis brewing, but not before the stuck up comment about a vape (post it at the door and don't put it on your staff). We no showed a reservation for 8 last night because we called ahead to say we were running late and were given grief (part of our party had a misunderstanding about the time...not even our fault). There was no reason to be snippy and rude. My husband spent 22 years in the hospitality industry, and knows the drill, often tipping WAY above average - 30-50%, in fact, sometime up to 100%. But if you're going to act like that? Maybe your servers should know your hosts are good for one thing: screwing 'em over.

Alex A.

Yelp
Barley & Board is so so so good. Loved their risotto. I loved the drink I got (I think it was spiced old-fashioned). The apps are good -- their hummus board, the warm nuts -- and their service made things move smoothly for our large group. The boards are HUGE and justify sharing. I like the ambiance and found it to be not too loud and not too cramped -- I just wish the tables were larger because the plates are substantially sized.

Maurlie L.

Yelp
Barley & Board has truly upped its game! Recently experienced their improved quality and offerings, and I must say, it's impressive. The manager's warm welcome on a rainy Saturday was a standout--going above and beyond to invite us to sister restaurants and the nearby Speakeasy. Highly recommend this gem!

Mark F.

Yelp
Still a very good option when I am downtown for a visit with friends and family; I think it's pretty cool at most times of the year, but I think it's going to be very difficult to get a seat during the holidays. I think I need to help them out with business at any time of the year, so I think it's worth a try. Cheers, Mark F.

Jace W.

Yelp
Enjoyed a meal here with three friends. We started with drinks, I had the B&B Cosmopolitan, which was really good! My friends had their blonde beer & one had champagne. We all enjoyed the drinks. I ordered the pork tenderloin, it was in a very spicy rub, but extremely tender and delicious, topped with string, fried onions and micro greens, I highly recommend it. Two enjoyed the B&B burger and had no complaints. One had the steak and would not recommend it. We shared the bread pudding for dessert topped with fresh whipped cream. It was delicious with a nice crispy crust and illegally insides, highly recommend it. The service was a bit lacking, took a long time to get our drinks, and even longer for our food. Once we did get everything, we thoroughly enjoyed it but I wouldn't go if you were in a hurry. Plan on spending leisurely time waiting for the food and drinks.

Mickele B.

Yelp
This space here is very wide open and friendly, with very attentive staff and a fairly diverse menu, with something for everybody. Some of the menu descriptions are confusing. Otherwise a great option for dinner in Denton.

Steven G.

Yelp
Food food. Bring a lot of money. Nice ambience and personnel. The service was just right. Quick but not too quick I need 85 words to post my review. Next time I will bring some wine. Winter is almost over and this is all I can say about these guys. I will come back,

Esther B.

Yelp
This was a group team building outing with my company. It was such a great time. The instructors were very friendly & professional. They really brought my creative juices out. Would definitely do this again.

Chloe K.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and it was so good! Got the hummus board for an app and built our own charcuterie board for the entree. The meats and cheeses came with grapes, olives, nuts, bread, vegetables, and honey/jam/mustard. We got a few cocktails which were delicious as well:) Love atmosphere of this place and all of the cute places around within walking distance!

Emily L.

Yelp
Really good modern American type of food! We got the blue cheese chips- homemade potato chips with blue cheese dressing and Buffalo sauce. They were great but the portion was huge. I got the chicken sandwich which I highly recommend! The chicken goat cheese salad was good and so were the cookies. The server Reese was super cool, really friendly and great at her job!

Jen W.

Yelp
I've loved this place since the first time I went. Unfortunately, after today I will not be going back. So disappointed. The fried mushrooms are normally amazing and today they were terrible, burnt and hard. Sad that they no longer have a brunch menu. The only thing I enjoyed was the mimosa flight, they do have 8 flavors of syrups to add. There were maybe 5 other groups there and the service was slow. Employees were just standing around talking. I'm not sure what's going on here, perhaps a change in management.

Keith In Texas ..

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. When you walk in, you can see the extreme craftsmanship that was put into this place. The staff was very nice and with the small issue I had, the server IMMEDIATELY fixed it. No need for managers or asking a million questions. That kind of employee empowerment is really rare. The food and the drink I had were both 15 out of 10. Please try this place for yourself and you will see exactly what I mean.

Jo P.

Yelp
Awesome environment (even the bathrooms are fun), good drinks, and delicious charcuterie board! Minus one star because our charcuterie board came out well before our drinks despite having ordered them in the reverse order. We would have loved to have sampled more from the drink menu but the bar was "backed up" despite it not being a full restaurant. Seemed as if they could have used more hands behind the bar and less people greeting/seating. It would also be nice if they would give some sort of description about the beers on the menu. They have a lot of local options, but for someone who isn't local, I had to Google each beer to get an idea of what it was. Ended up just ordering a flight picking 2 and letting the bartender pick the other 2 which were meh. Even just details like amber, IPA, etc would be helpful.

Kirsten A.

Yelp
Great ambiance and drinks. An eclectic menu that doesn't disappoint. Located in the downtown area.

Kendall S.

Yelp
Popped in for a moment on an afternoon spent in Denton. After seeing the menu I wished I'd been hungrier upon arrival... next time! We still enjoyed the spiced nuts which are super salty and seasoned with plenty of rosemary, served warm. So good! Jon had an old fashioned and I went with a glass of Pinot gris. Zero complaints besides my lack of hunger. The space here is truly impressive and quite beautiful. The furniture from the bar to tables to booths are all beautifully crafted. The ceilings are super tall and enormous windows let in so much light. Despite being so open and spacious, the space is still cozy and warm. I'm really looking forward to some future lounging with a "build a board."

Tenelle M.

Yelp
Their charcuterie boards are to die for the overall vibe inside is awesome too, great food, great service and 10/10. Great for date night or girls night, cocktails are delicious too! Cheers

Erica E.

Yelp
Love the ambiance of the place. It's very chill and swanky. The mushroom app is huge, warning. We also had the Cuban and it was delicious!!! Good date night or relaxing evening

Katie B.

Yelp
Nic has to be the best bartender i've ever had the honor of crossing paths with. Such an amazing cocktail creator, as well as server. I wasn't a high fan of this branch of the restaurant, but his calming and kind presence keeps me coming back. Nic is an asset to this establishment. Keep nic.

Anastasia M.

Yelp
We had Hummus appetizer and tomato soup to start. Both were delicious but the hummus appetizer was 10/10 Portion size is great for sharing Great beer selection. They had the big windows opened so we were able to enjoy the nice breeze. Service was great. Location is nice on the little downtown square. Will definitely stop back if in the area again

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Super cute restaurant! Service was excellent and the food was too. Had the cutest atmosphere

Valerie M.

Yelp
Somar was a wonderful waitress that was extremely knowledgeable and gave me and my friend several great suggestions. The food was delicious and the drinks as well. They had live music that really set the tone for the evening. Highly recommend.

Mikayla H.

Yelp
Awesome place to spend an evening on the square! Highly recommend going with a group and slitting a couple boards and wine bottles!

Ignacio R.

Yelp
The food is great! I trust the staff with their selections on the boards! Our sever was so helpful in our selection. The food is SO DELICIOUS AND BEAUTIFUL!!! Such a cool place!!!

Scott O.

Yelp
Great service! We were sat immediately on a busy Friday night. The restaurant has great capacity. I had a vanilla sugar old fashioned, mushroom risotto with shrimp and an appetizer of Al pastor. Food was all very flavorful and the vibe of the restaurant was what I was looking for after the long drive up from San Antonio. Keep up the good work.

Rishaunda B.

Yelp
Cute ambiance. It gives rustic minimalist. We enjoyed our board and fell in love with the goat cheese. Must try!!

Naomi L.

Yelp
I really liked the place. It was cozy and nice. I had dinner on Friday there it wasn't crowded. The large board is definitely enough for two but we also ordered two small boards which we both shared. It was enough for at least 3-4 people. The Brie was very smooth and spreadable. The fennel salami which is seasonal was just ok. The wagu melts in your mouth. Thank you for a great time!

Reagan B.

Yelp
Hummus board, salad with vinaigrette and blue cheese, and trout. All delicious. Good service. Great unique drink menu
