"This SMU favorite is a great spot for watch sporting events, game shows and more, or participating in one of Barley House’s weekly trivia nights. It’s also been hosting shows from the best local bands since the ‘90s. And you can still get a $12 pitcher of Coors Light and $5 drink specials every day." - Eater Staff

I have done many events here and I love coming here! The staff is always super friendly and helpful! Bartenders Chris and Phil were awesome! This last time I came, I got to meet Blue Jean, the most beautiful boy ever! Love that this place is dog friendly and cannot wait to come back as a customer!

Had a fantastic lunch at Barley House! The soup and salad were delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Huge shoutout to Kimi, the bartender, who provided excellent service! Highly recommend this place.

Google
I’ve generally had mixed reviews for this place, but I can’t forget the evening I had with them last night. It was getting late, I had made great connections with Adrian and Chelsea. One of the bartenders who was off the clock ended up getting very aggressive with me and trying to show off for his friend by threatening me and trying to put me in my place. I was very uncomfortable, frankly, I had done nothing but sit and enjoy my time at the bar when he ended up threatening my time and space there. When I was trying to remedy the situation, one of the older bartenders started saying ‘if that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels’ and it started becoming a group effort at that point. To some degree, it becomes an issue with the clientele, at another point it becomes an even greater issue when the staff on call start to get involved. I had already resolved some prior discrepancies from a previous visit I had, and again I found Chelsea and Adrian to be fantastic and receptive towards customers wants and needs. Unfortunately, I do not find that same theme radiating throughout the staff, and felt attacked and diminished by those that are entrusted to serve, both on and off the clock. I had felt that once again I was an object of scrutiny, as opposed to a wellbeing customer in a safe space. I would like the opportunity to enjoy my time, free of issues, but I’m unsure I’ll be able to find it here. As a graduate student at SMU, I fail to see this establishment as a safe place for students of differing ideas and perspectives from the normal crowd, and would appreciate if the staff could generally sponsor open-mindedness, kindness, and generosity on and off the clock. This need not be the case towards patrons that are there simply to have a good time and unwind, but for the staff to get involved in customer disputes and sponsoring one over the other is beyond what I would consider fostering a vibe of open-mindedness and good faith.

Google
I've been wanting to go for some time and glad I finally did. Very much a college bar right next to SMU. Great atmosphere and food. I had the Reuben and Tots, both of which I would recommend. The night I was there, a band played. About an hour before, they started charging a $5 cover for any new patrons coming in. Was an enjoyable evening.

Google
Mature crowd, but all ages. It's fun, easy to get a drink, and live music. I've had the pizza a few times and it's great!

Ivette Gonzalez

Google
Save your time & money. Place is filthy, found cockroaches coming out the kitchen area on my way to the bathroom!🤮 Service sucks, drinks suck, food is horrible. Much better bars across the street. I would also like to mention that they like to throw ID’s across the bar if they assume it’s fake and they feel like it, unprofessional and disrespectful. I would 0/10 recommend.

Faith

Google
Their food is actually pretty good given it's a bar. Most of the time the bar is filled with students/people in general, but there are times where it's chill and hardly anyone is there. They also have pretty good beers on draft. They're pet friendly and have a patio in the front, restaurant style seating inside with TVs, and a back area with games.

Courtney Lacey

Google
Spent 6 years going to this home style bar. many great times, and always on top with service, food and drinks. no matter the day or event! But good memories always come to an end as I was Double charged due to a server error. worst part was the server tried to fix it but then charged me for the wrong bill. Chelsea stated she get things fixed and refunded but has since given me no return call or refund account! not even business credit as I was a long time customer.

Chad E.

Yelp
Awesome band!! Thank you for having their last gig for the school year at your bar. Had a blast!!! And the door guy with tattoos great Gave my fiancé water and a place to sit on the patio while it was wet. Definitely a good spot to visit and feel respected all in one!!!

MaDonna W.

Yelp
First time at the Barley. Some of the SMU parents were dragged in by the students.. I'm going to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised I had one of their regular burgers was actually pretty good , and I'm not a fan of bar food. They have tater tots, which I think is adorable, and not really something that I have eaten since I was 10 years old.... But the kids liked eating them off my plate. The weight staff was very nice and friendly. We really enjoyed the music. The live band that was inside. The dance floor is really nothing to speak of but everyone is more than welcome to stand, and just start dancing which we did. This is a dog friendly property . They have parking.

Yelp
IF YOURE OVER 21 DONT GO HERE. My friends and I went here just to grab a drink while bar hopping a little bit. We are all over 21, some of us 22. When we got there, the bouncer was SUPER NICE to us and checked our ids and granted us entry. Then we went up to the bar to try to order drinks and the bartender asked for all of our IDs again before any of us had even said a word. He then was bending them, flicking them, and called over 2 other bartenders as they were staring back at us and whispering and looking back at them. He came back to us and told us we couldn't be served unless we had an other form of ID. The next few minutes contained the male bartender yelling in a young girls face to "get the fuck out", throwing our IDS, and the older female bartender calling us freaks. There is a good way and a bad way to deny someone, despite the fact all of our IDs are real, but this was still completely disrespectful and grown adults should not be yelled at and treated like children and nobody should be yelling at a girl. I would like to add that when the left, the young bouncer was again super nice. He's the only good thing about this place. If you're an adult, don't go here, they obviously only want minors and fake ids

Ashley H.

Yelp
Food was absolutely so gooddd!! I would definitely come back Kimmie the bartender was well attentive and down to earth ever one is so nice!

Mike E.

Yelp
This is a great bar near SMU with a wide range of people until it skews heavily toward college students after 9 pm. I've been here a couple time now and it never disappoints. It's not fancy or trendy. There are no IG spots. It's a bar and it does that perfectly. The wings are great and they have 3 beers from Peticolas including Velvet Hammer and Golden Opportunity (a delicious kolsch). Service was great. Wish I had the name of the guy who took care of us on the evening of 12/10.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Easy, always friendly staff. I miss the pineapple pizza! Grilled chicken sandwich is good as well. Cold beer, great place to sit outside.

Jake A.

Yelp
Barley is amazing. I go several nights a week, the bartenders and staff are absolutely incredible people. It's my go to chill bar vibe, and they will have live bands and trivia some nights. Drinks are good, and not too expensive. The pink frozen drink is awesome. They also have the BEST mozzarella sticks in dallas, I get them almost every time I go they are just so delicious. Also they have a fire steak quesadilla. Highly recommend!

Jill S.

Yelp
Great bar with cool paraphernalia on the walls. Reasonable drink prices with decent food and live music.

Olivia H.

Yelp
this place needs to fire their bouncer immediately. He cursed at us multiple times saying our ID's were fake and tried to kick us out when all of us are 23+. Saying "these are the fakest fucking ID's I've ever seen" and "I know how ID's are supposed to fucking look I don't need you to fucking tell me". If you don't know how to check a real ID then you shouldn't be a bouncer. I have never had an issue with my Texas ID and he was acting belligerent when checking ours. He was so incredibly rude it was baffling how he even landed a job.

Kathy M.

Yelp
Very casual seems fun. I was there when the Beatles cover band was there. I ordered a salad and not only was it inexpensive. It was surprisingly good.

Haley M.

Yelp
Came here on a thursday for some drinks and trivia. The drinks were fine, typical bar drinks! We were pretty hungry so we ordered some food, cheeseburger, mozzarella sticks, and fried pickles. The cheeseburger was incredible. I could not get enough! It was so fresh and flavorful. I heard they do everything in house so that's always a plus. Trivia was fun, some rounds we totally aced and others we didn't know anything about! Definitely would go back.

Kent L.

Yelp
Great local bar/pub across from SMU and next to the Aquatic Center where my daughter swims for the Mustangs PonyUp !

Avery D.

Yelp
We LOVE Barley House!! Adrian and Chelsea are the best bartenders, even Andrew at the door gives a great deal experience. This place has awesome food, killer drinks, and can I say again the BEST service!! Highly recommend.

Paley W.

Yelp
I really don't have much to say about this place. Don't take this review for consideration if you're here for drinking and late night fun I wanted chicken pot pie on pi day and my coworker suggest I go here during lunch. Their chicken pot pie is half price on Thursdays (and pi day? Not sure) it definitely was a very quality pie. The inside is not watery and not too thick, just right to my tasting. Crust is small but best part in my opinion. The chicken chunk is best cut of the breast. Seasoned well and I did not detect much salt is sodium. I will definitely go back during work lunch. The service was great and friendly.

Megan F.

Yelp
I recommend going to The Barley House to listen to live music and/or watch sports. It makes for a great hang out spot in a convenient location. The food tasted okay but, our group will likely not order anything other than apps and drinks next time.

Kevin W.

Yelp
My friends and I came here for March Madness games. This place rocks. They have big screen TVs everywhere so we were able to watch all the games at the same time. They were serving $10 domestic pitchers and $7 burger baskets. On Fridays, they have half priced pizzas before 6pm. The only drawbacks are the small parking lot and the limited service. There were only two waitresses and it was taking a while to get service. It was not the fault of the waitresses. They just had a ton of people that they had to service.

Braydon B.

Yelp
service was terrible, sat at the door for about 10 min with no one sitting me, ended up just leaving.

Bill R.

Yelp
Good food. Great vibes on the inside. Well decorated and fancy but cool. Solid drinks missed happy hour at 4 but was still good

Chris C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 3 years and have never been treated with as much disrespect as the new bouncer at the front did. Be aware, if someone from behind you nudges you and you accidentally nudge the bouncer, he'll throw you out of the bar with no questions asked. If I go again, I'll make sure to bring some tampax, he surely was acting like he needed it!

Madeline M.

Yelp
Went to see a band and decided to try their grilled chicken breast and seasonal veggies. The chicken was very favorable and seasoned perfectly. Thr veggies were also cooked perfectly and not over cooked or soggie. I also had a side salad which was huge. Overall, a fun time was had by all.

Andrew E.

Yelp
Refuses to pay for ESPN+ to stream the SMU football game even though they're a SMU bar...couldn't be more disappointed with management and staff

Madalyn A.

Yelp
The Barley House is known as a SMU bar, but don't make the mistake of coming to Barley House on game day, you won't be able to watch the game. I gave this review 2 stars because at least the staff is nice and the drinks are good. But DO NOT COME HERE ON GAMEDAY!!!

Davis W.

Yelp
Ordered a cheese pizza from here - big mistake! Worst pizza I have had in dallas, couldn't even be saved by ranch or Parmesan or red pepper flakes. I would recommend a seriously reevaluation of the pizza department at this establishment and advise against ordering the cheese pizza. Have had the bbq chicken pizza though and it's fire

Adrianne P.

Yelp
Barley is the best place near Smu campus! We rented it out for a pregame and they were so much fun, the bartenders are nice and fast it's a great vibe

Kelle Rene' ..

Yelp
We came across this place before an SMU game and it looked like it had some good energy so we went into the patio. It was a beautiful day and the patio was nice size with several picnic tables and a couple large screen TVs with football playing. They also had a cool water feature / fountain in the corner that was made with about 50 beer taps. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. We had a beer and ordered some pizza. We had tapped beer and it was nice and cold. The pizza we went with was the BBQ Chicken pizza. The pizza was quite good. The crust was better than I expected, the chicken was tender, the BBQ sauce had just enough spice, red onion was roasted nicely, and it was cheesy! Unfortunately, while my friend was finishing up his 3rd piece (there were 8 pieces and I was stuffed after two and he even finished the crust of my 2nd piece), he pulled out something that looked like tinsel or a very thin curly type of wire. After looking more, he pulled out a second piece of the sparkly, wire like material. We very politely told the waitress how delicious the pizza was but "we found these in the pizza". She took the pieces and asked us if she wanted us to have her show the cook. I said, I thought that would be a good idea and that I would want to know if I were him. She later came back and just said he didn't know what it was. SMH. As she was aware we were first timers, I would have expected some type of discount, discount on next visit, comp, something. Nope. This place is really cool and has some fun things inside as well. I was just overall a little disappointed in the way the food issue was handled...or better stated...not handled. I love me some things that sparkle and shine, just not in my pizza. Enjoy y'all!

Catherine R.

Yelp
every price was higher than the menu.waiter was like too bad.

Bee D.

Yelp
I came here for the first time with my 5-year reunion class and I'm happy we hosted our event at Barley House. The appetizers were incredible. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of appetizers but they did an amazing job. People were going back to get more appetizers. They certainly did a great job at making our reunion a great one. I'm definitely coming back with friends and family. It's great to know that even those that don't drink can also enjoy their visit.

Mike H.

Yelp
I love this place. My daughter has lived in Dallas for over 12 years and every time I visit I like to stop down and play some pinball have a few beers and I'm always welcome like I'm a regular. Took my grandson was five there today while we were out for a walk and went to the back to play pinball the waitresses were very accommodating especially Jay she went out of her way to make sure that he had a great Time. And before anybody ruffle their feathers about me taking a five-year-old into a bar I had asked ahead of time and the game room is separated from the rest and we had a great time while we were there. Again the place makes me feel like I'm a regular Great food, Cold Beer and Dr.Pepper along with a great staff. A go to place for fun

Melissa C.

Yelp
Don't appreciate the bouncer asking me if I knew the address on my ID when I'm 22...I got the Cherry Limeade that was good. Paid $9, however asked for our check to leave and the waitress said she'd have to charge us an extra $3 because we didn't meet the $10 minimum. Not once did she mention this when we got there. On my receipt this $3 came up as 'chips & salsa'. I understand they need to operate as a restaurant to stay open. BUT maybe next time be upfront to customers and don't charge for something we didn't even get to eat. I don't think people come here for food anyways

Carter M.

Yelp
I love a great bar with great bites. The venison chili here rocks and draws me back again and again. It's got that local pub type atmosphere which is inviting and has that "cheers" type feel. Great folks and great owner who tend to needs. Love their food! It's exactly what you want in bar bites but higher end.

Khoi N.

Yelp
Love the decor! A perfect place to drink and play pinball. I had their chicken pot pie and it was great.

Lisa L.

Yelp
I love Barley more than anything, but the old man bouncer with the long ponytail is SO horrendously mean to women and men both. He told me I wasn't cute enough to get in and shut the door in my face. I spend at least $50 there once a week. The other bouncers are amazing, especially Kato. Literally everyone on their staff is so great except the old man with the ponytail. I am in disbelief. The Barley House is a 10/10 spot, just make sure that old man isn't working.

Cheryl L.

Yelp
My husband and I went there yesterday because it was a great day to have lunch on a patio! We haven't been there since our daughter graduated from SMU years ago! Our burgers were amazing!! The music playing was great and our waitress was polite and attentive! Will for sure be back!

Andrea J.

Yelp
Fun spot to watch a band. But it was SO loud, that we could not hear the server and vice versa. It was hard to order food and drinks. The server actually brought the wrong beer, which wouldn't be an issue if my friend didn't have an allergy to the beer that she did bring. We tracked her down and got a new one, so it was all ok. This is definitely has that dive/college bar thing going on....no need to dress up (aka...jeans and a tshirt are just fine).

Pierce R.

Yelp
Food took over an hour to come out. On top of that a guy came out halfway though our meal and made one of our friends leave "for a fake ID" when he is of age. Really disappointed, never going back.

Maria M.

Yelp
The Barley House was a cozy and friendly atmosphere! Right when we arrived everyone was very friendly, the waiter was so pleasant and respectful. On Fridays there's the 1/2 price off of Pizza's until 6pm. We ordered the Hawaiian pizza which includes Canadian bacon, pineapple and jalapeño. When picking up your pizza slice you're going to experience the cheesiest experience ever! The pizza smells magnificent and it's quit tasty! As a side I ordered the Barley House salad that comes with romaine lettuce, red onion, tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms and I chose the Italian dressing. I'm very impressed with the salad, it was fresh and super delicious! Super excited to come back to try many more yummy dishes! Thanks!

Alejandro J.

Yelp
Chelsea and Mitch am I had to deal with a lot of obnoxious people but give great service to people that are actually over 21. Love it

Steve S.

Yelp
I had a very pleasant experience here for my happy hour sup. I sat at the bar, and here was my experience: 1. Very cold $3 happy hour Shiner (and all mass produced domestics) drafts from 3-8 weekdays, nice 2. A few big TVs behind the bar playing sporting events, sweet 3. Respectable $9 half pound burger, that came with LTO, cheese, and a mound o tots. I ordered it medium rare, and it came out medium, np 4. Nice bartender, new to BH, pleasant, and interactive I have not been here since this was the Green Elephant, and BH has raised the bar (no pun intended (: ) since that time with better TVs, better beer selection, and a better furnished deck, including a sweet beer tap fountain, pergolas to help break the direct sun, and a fireplace for cooler weather. This will be a fine place to watch football games in the fall and winter, happy I've rediscovered it :)

Meghan D.

Yelp
If you're in the neighborhood, Barley House is a great place to grab pizza and beer while watching a game. The beer selection is pretty extensive. Our waiter was attentive and quickly changed the channel to our game. The pizzas are between medium and large sized and can easily feed 2-3 people. The pizza was ok, but given the price, it was a good value. (+) beer selection (+) multiple big screen TVs

Phillip J.

Yelp
Pizza is delicious! Chicken pot-pie is always a winner, too. The staff have always been kind and authentic. 5 stars for the "little man".

Rahil N.

Yelp
Came back to give this place another try. (Not my decision) Not surprised that we say with a party of 8 and never got anyone to come greet us nor provide us with any type of service. We left after 30 minutes. No contact made

Skip S.

Yelp
Great local club for drinks and live music. The bands are always great and the tribute bands are fun. Mix of SMU crowd and locals makes it fun. Pizza looks great and there seems to be many other options that look good. Nice patio and TVs for sporting events.

Nicole I.

Yelp
The Barley house is classic dive bar where you can get awesome fried food, grab a beer and watch sporting events. Not high on prices and has pool tables inside if that is your game of choice.

Sabrina L.

Yelp
This is mostly an older crowd. They do have excellent food and the drinks are pretty reasonable. The bartenders can be a bit flighty sometimes, but all in all it is a good experience. It may be hard to get a drinks at times because this place is mostly regulars and so the bartenders tend to cater to the regulars. Bathrooms are clean so that is a good thing.

Layton C.

Yelp
I used to love this place. I came regularly, ate, drank, and had a good time. Two months ago, I went with an SMU-organized group to the bar. One of the kids was over served and ended up puking on himself out back. I don't know the kid, he was just part of the 100+ person group. Ever since then, I have been treated like garbage every time I've gone to Barley House. The manager/bartender has treated us as if we were the reason this random guy puked, when it was in fact her who served him. They were under investigation afterwards, which sucks, but they did over serve him, so it is somewhat warranted. Last night, we went again. We had lunch, had some drinks, spent $30 on the jukebox and were having fun. I'll be honest, after a few hours, we were drunk and were belting out Celine Dion as if we were in fact on the Titanic. However, the place was empty. It was our table of 6 and 2 people at the bar. No one complained until the manager/bartender came to start her shift. The second she came, the waitress was told not to check on us anymore, so we couldn't order any more food. When we went to the bar to order, they never told us no we couldn't have a drink (because we weren't that drunk), but they visibly watered down our drinks in front of us. We were also "hushed" several times from singing. Eventually, the jukebox was unplugged and our songs were skipped. Now, I understand if we were in a family establishment causing a big scene. We were in an empty bar at 9PM singing to the jukebox we paid for. We closed our tabs and tipped generously because we aren't trash. On the way out, we mentioned we felt like we were being treated poorly. The manager/bartender immediately told us that she did not like us since we were involved in that one group two months ago. She said she had to "watch" us. I'll never be visiting Barley House again, which I'm deeply sad about, but I refuse to be treated like a sub-par human by an establishment when I have done nothing to warrant it.

Chris R.

Yelp
Small enough to feel personal during the day when it's slow but i guess that might make it feel cramped during busy times. You can bring your dog if you eat on the patio which I consider awesome. The food is good (basic bar fare). The service is why I'll keep coming back. I've dealt with 3 servers, Paige is a champ. Jazmine and one other (I forgot her name) were really friendly and made us feel at home. I was a little disappointed that the manager came out just to whine to a server about the song I chose on the jukebox but in all honesty, it was kinda funny! I recommend this little joint!

Kristie A.

Yelp
Over the years I've been to the Barley House a handful of times. I've seen bands perform here, and usually come here for a bit, post St. Patty's day parade. I have always had good time. That is until the toilets in the girl's bathrooms get stopped up, and there's only one working one, and that one working one is disgusting... Ugh. I'm about to be spending a lot more time at this bar since it's where my new kickball team likes to meet to have drinks after the games. I went here Friday night to pick up my t-shirt. I went up to the bar to order a drink and to get a menu. I was meeting other friends, so I went ahead and grabbed a seat at the bar. I don't know what it was with the bartenders, but they barely paid attention to anyone at the bar, and kept looking past the bar. What were they looking at? I could never figure it out. This happened on a previous visit too. There were only three people at the bar, so I was surprised when it took a few minutes before I got noticed to order a drink. My beer went empty several times during the night, and I usually had to flag down the bartender to get a refill. Grrrr I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with tater-tots. I was starving! About twenty minutes pass, and still no food. I finally got the attention of one of the waiters, and he mumbled something about the tater-tots and my food would be right out. Another ten minutes go by and FINALLY my food comes out, and everything on the plate is lukewarm. The tater-tots, which taste of the frozen kind, were just that. The grilled cheese might have been good if it came out hot, but it wasn't, and the cheese was starting to turn rubbery. I was so hungry that I ate most of it anyway. I sure hope the service picks up seeing as I'm about to be here once a week. I'll give them a second chance on food, and will update this review accordingly.

Mitch R.

Yelp
Don't ever go hereto watch a football game unless it's SMU. This place sucks. We watched Bethune rather than A&M because they couldn't 'change the channel'. As soon as it was over they were miraculously able to change the channel to surprise SMU.

Nadine F.

Yelp
I usually hate bars, but I enjoyed Barley House. It's a nice place to sit around with some beers and chat with friends. When I went, everyone was out on the patio sitting at picnic tables, and the inside of the bar was basically empty. This is fine with me, because I'm not a fan of dark, dirty bars. I wasn't planning to eat anything, but then someone ordered the buffalo chicken strips and fries, and they looked so delicious that I had to order some on my own. Then someone else saw how good mine looked and ordered some themself. They were definitely not fresh and still kind cold, and I suspect that they were probably made from some pre-cooked, breaded chicken strips. They were still damn good, though, and they made for some excellent bar food. I liked the sauce, and they were nice and spicy. The fries were thick and excellent. I'd get it again. The crowd there is from SMU and comprised of douchey, popped-collar frat-type boys, so I would recommend bringing your own crowd to avoid meeting new people there. Another warning: There is not a lot of parking in their lot. I was only able to get a spot because I was riding a scooter, but others have had to park on the street. One guy had his car broken into while parked there on another occasion. And although Google Maps will tell you that this bar is on Yale St., the street has been renamed to SMU Blvd. Since Barley House is just down the street from me, I could see myself going back. It's a nice, chill, super-casual place to grab a beer on a week night.

Dana R.

Yelp
Well, what can I say. The bands I've seen there are okay (because of the sound, not the bands) and the service is less than par. The last time I went to Barley was to see the Happy Bullets play, which was entertaining but not my favorite show. The sound wasn't up to what I've heard previously. Even though I was sitting at a table, I decided to walk to the bar to order my drinks; I'm guaranteed to get service that way, right? I stopped going to Barley for a while because, when they moved to Yale, they became a college bar and everything negative college-associated followed them to their new location. I saw several college girls "tossing their cookies" in the restroom, the college boys like to talk very loudly about their conquests and too many of my drink and food orders came back incorrect. Unless I'm going there to see a band, I won't go there anymore.
