Barley Oak is a restaurant located on the North Shore. The beer selection was plentiful but didn’t have many local crafts brews. The food is decent, but my experience was mixed. I ordered the Reuben, which did not cover the bread halfway-covered with meat, and the potato salad was just alright. Unfortunately, the floors and bar felt dirty and sticky, could’ve been the humidity from outdoors as it was a very warm afternoon. The bathroom was also far from clean, with a sticky floor that made walking unpleasant . The dining experience was passable, with bartenders who were okay but not particularly attentive. The conversation from two girls centered on their age and relationships. Overall, it's not a place I'd revisit. Despite the historic charm, the cleanliness and dining experience left much to be desired. We may give it another try in cooler months

Google
Worth the forty five minute drive for me! I would gladly do this daily haha amazing drink selection, great menu, and great food! I can definitely see myself being a regular if I lived closer!

Google
I recently visited the Barley Oak. The wide variety of craft beers they offer is truly impressive. I had the pleasure of trying their Purple Haze IPA on draft, and it was nothing short of amazing. But what truly sets the Barley Oak is its location. Situated right by the Mandeville lakefront, it offers breathtaking views of Lake Pontchartrain. As you sip your beer, you can bask in the serene beauty of the lake, which adds a special touch to the overall experience. If you're looking for a great selection of craft beer and a perfect lakeside atmosphere, Barley Oak Pub is the place to be.

Google
Happy hour on the Lake! Very busy, had to grab my own beers. Great location.

Google
Beer on the Lake! Yes Please! This place has a large selection of brews and a little something for everyone. Stopped by to check it out. The atmosphere is relaxed with an awesome look. This is a great spot to kick back and just enjoy the view of the lake and slip on a drink. It's dog friendly and has outside seating. Check it out!

Google

Google
Great local beer bar. They have a great selection of draft beers. Really nice view of the lake front. Good spot to stop when walking , biking or just driving through. The food is better then average pub food. I highly recommend the Ruben sandwich or the shrimp tacos, both are really good.

Amanda Nesbit

Google
Yummy food and great beer selection. The view is great and service. The gator sausage was very good and the gouda is very yummy! The quesadilla was not the best, they try to do too much for something that should be simple.

Amy G.

Yelp
Always a great spot to spend some time with friends, loved ones, etc. dog friendly and there is a few different comfortable spaces around the place to enjoy! Reasonably priced.

larry b.

Yelp
They allow dogs. Great views. Good drinks. The food is ok for a bar. Our doodle loves it

Ashley B.

Yelp
I love this place. I've been here many times. The vibes. The views. The drink selection is always on point. Watching the sunset over the lake is awesome.

Steven D.

Yelp
Best place to grab a craft beer. The views here are always great and it's a relaxing environment.

BigAlsCandy C.

Yelp
Awesome spot that we came across and grabbed an afternoon beer while visiting the area. Can't wait to try this place again around sunset.

Denise U.

Yelp
Great view on upper deck with a full bar. The bar tender made a great Cosmo and my friend had a nice white wine. It was my first time there and the staff and patrons were all very friendly. Will definitely be back!

Jeremy H.

Yelp
Amazing selection of beers from all over the place! The pulled pork sandwich was off the charts delicious!!! Corn hole downstairs. The best music around! Nice work, people! I'll definitely be back!

Cynthia K.

Yelp
I like this place because it is upbeat and has great views of the lake. Good drinks and bar food. You can bring your dog. There is an elevator. Open late.

Jeff C.

Yelp
What an amazing "watering hole"! 20+ beers on tap, full bar, delicious kitchen and ambience too boot Knowledgable and friendly staff make the experience over the top... Get here and let them introduce you to your next new beer!

Yelp
I've been here more times than I can count, and it's a solid s-okay experience every time. I get it, the competition for a bar with a lakefront view isn't exactly fierce, since Don's has been out of commission for a couple years and the Lakehouse got Ida'ed. The beers are good and the bartenders are efficient, but it's pretty difficult to screw up beer. I appreciate the local beers that are highlighted as well as seasonal guest beers. The food is mediocre at best, with the sausage platters and pretzels being the top appetizers. The top floor patio area is small and tough to maneuver if it's full of people. The view can be lovely, but it's blocked by the treeline. The downstairs feels so far away and can create a hazard by carrying full beers down a huge flight of stairs. Overall, it feels meh, but it's good enough for return visits when someone else wants to go. On the plus side, they're very dog friendly. I've met some amazing pups.

Paula K.

Yelp
Our favorite bar in Mandeville! Good selection of on tap brews, as well as food options. Fun place to hang out & relax with friends--with gorgeous sunset viewing!

James M.

Yelp
A very cool place to enjoy a beer you've never had before! A great selection of brews!!!

L M.

Yelp
I've never had a single good thing to eat here. But who cares? This is a killer bar in the best setting in the greater New Orleans area. Insane beer selection. Good (could be better) selection of cocktails and wine.

Kristal W.

Yelp
Barley Oak is a great place to hang out casually with a small group or a big group. They have a wide selection of wine, beers, and cheese boards. Their prices are reasonable, and it's right on the lakefront so you usually have a great view. It stays pretty busy, but I can usually always hear what my friends are saying so it has fairly good acoustics. This is my favorite bar on the Northshore.

Mary Louise B.

Yelp
Y'all ask the bartender Clay to make you a Lemon drop. He's THE BEST! The fireplace is always warm and cozy and their appetizers are THE BOMB!!! The view it's quite pretty as well! It's my spot!

Alex P.

Yelp
Alright. What's better than an evening on the lakefront?! Great food looking at the subset on the lakefront. We really do enjoy a beautiful sunset BUT y'all..... the food here is yuck. I had a burger/chips and tacos. Chips instead of fries - thumbs down. I don't even eat bar burgers but I was drinking so I had to do what I had to do. The Barley Oak should revamp the menu right away. This close enough to Nola so I know y'all can find a chef to consult with. Merci 3 stars because it was a nice vibe.

Thomas L.

Yelp
Went Friday afternoon for a drink. Not super busy but worst service ever. Would do better raising the price of the PBRs to get better workers. Very disappointed.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Soooo many amazing beer on tap to choose from and so so good! Great appetizers, great views, pet friendly and great southern charm! Hospitality is amazing too!

Catherine H.

Yelp
Great place to have a beer and watch the LSU game. Several taps to try and comfy couch to watch the game.

Ken J.

Yelp
Excellent place to grab a drink and enjoy the outdoors. Upper patio seats about 40 plus standing room and the ground floor patio is much more expansive. Beer selection is great. Alligator sausage grilled 4 cheese sandwich with chips and New Oak burger with potato salad really hit the spot. All very tasty and seasoned very well. Good crowd on a Tuesday. Bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable about the beer selections. Although there was only one bartender She did a great job in quickly getting customer orders. She took time with customers as they made selections so you didn't feel rushed and she quickly filled the order and moved to the next customer. Excellent atmosphere

Scott L.

Yelp
Sweet spot right on the water, great selection of draft beers as well as some nice choices amongst the spirits. Balcony view offers panoramic sunsets and creates a natural gathering spot for the rowdy and the romantic. Instant favorite for me!

Joanna S.

Yelp
First time here, came out around 1:00 on a Sunday, it wasn't too busy and we were able to get a seat on the balcony overlooking the waterfront. We ordered a few beers and pretzels with cheese, the bartender was friendly and we were helped immediately. The pretzels were hot and fresh, perfect with melted cheese! It is very dog friendly and most people brought dogs, will try other food dishes next time, overall had a great experience!

David G.

Yelp
The Cajun sausage platter here is something you have to have! A combo of three types of Grilled Cajun Sausages; Hot Sausage, Alligator Sausage & Andouille Sausage served with Creole Mustard dipping sauce. The mustard they use will knock your socks off and made in house. A consider myself kind of an expert on sausage being a Polish American, and this platter blew me away. My date had the Bratwurst Dog which is also spectacular! The bun they use is soo good, and the spicy mustard is some of the best I've had. Anytime I am on the Northshore I have to stop here. The local beer selection is excellent, the view is unbeatable, and the staff is knowledgeable and super friendly. I had such a good experience here!

Shane M.

Yelp
Great spot to hang out and enjoy the view of the lake. Tons of beer and a laid back crowd.

Robby M.

Yelp
Ah, dogs and beer, what could be better? I do so enjoy this place - the beer is good, the food (try the potato salad!) is delicious, Gerilyn is behind the bar, and you can bring your dog with you! I love the style of the place, the outdoor seating, the lake, and pretty much everything about it. I've tried the gumbo, tasty, the brisket sandwich, tastier, the brisket taco, muy tasty, and the cheese plate (it's huge!); all good stuff. There isn't a big selection of food, but it's all good so far, and you can get one of the best Long Island Teas, west of Long Island, right here at home. I dunno, if you're into good food and drinks, a terrific venue, and have a dog but couldn't figure out where to combine all three, search no more...it's right here at The Barley Oak.

M R.

Yelp
Has a great Balcony overlooking the lake.. order the fresh baked pretzels and get the salty lime beer "Dog head" !!

Tristan C.

Yelp
I go to bars. I love bars. I give the bar 6.1. This bars charisma is electric, the view phenomenal but if you want a drink you'll be using the stair stepper at the gym. If it had a downstairs bar it be a easy 8.2.

Hailey W.

Yelp
Excellent drinks and excellent views. This is my favorite place to go on the Lakefront with my friends. We always sit on the balcony and watch the lake. The drinks are always great. I haven't been a fan of the food so far. I've only tried like the pretzels and cheese and some of the dips. It's not bad, just not impressive and it can get expensive. I usually just end up getting drinks. There's a nice lounge area with giant comfy couches and it's pretty quiet here on weekday nights so it's a great place to meet up and chill. Dog friendly, and I really enjoy seeing cute little pups sitting beside me on the balcony.

Yelp
The Barley Oak is becoming one of my favorite Northshore bars. Located on the Mandeville lakefront, the Barley Oak has an incredible view of the lake, great beer, great food and great staff. On my most recent visit, it was a busy Saturday night. Despite the crowd we were able to find two spots at the bar. Normally I recommend siting outside to look out on the lake, but it was a bit cold. While we didn't have the great lake view, we received such great service, that the bar may be my preferred spot in the future. The selection of beers is stellar. There looked to be at least 20 or more on draft with an even greater selection of bottles. We settled on a Fancy Lawnmower from St. Arnold, and a Irish Channel Stout from Nola Brewing. For the next round the bartender offered suggestions. Apparently Nola and Stone Breweries got together and produced a collaboration. I took her recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed the appropriately titled Pour Me Something Mister Porter. It was excellent. Besides making great beer recommendations, the bartender was very friendly, prompt and really made us feel welcome. Since we hadn't eaten, we ordered a Cajun sausage plate to help soak up some of the beer. The platter came with one link each of andouille, alligator and hot sausage. Additionally, there was a side of creole mustard with bread and sauerkraut. This platter was excellent. The sausage was perfectly cooked, and each was a good representation of the particular type of sausage. There were several other food items on their menu, so next time, I will be sure to sample more items. I found that prices weren't cheap, but were very reasonable considering the location. There are several stairs to traverse to enter the bar, but there is also an elevator to make it handicap accessible. I would imagine the elevator is also convenient after a few too many drinks since falling down 25 feet of stairs would be no fun. If you like great beer, views, food and people, check out the Barley Oak.

Yelp
Stopped at this cute as can be bar with a great lake view. Such nice people, we had the shrimp tacos, AMAZING. Had the cheese quesadilla with beer cheese, um EVEN MORE AMAZING. But the best was the potato salad! It was one of those meals you wish could start all over again. And the water view was the best! Happy birthday to me!!!

Tony C.

Yelp
This is a great place for hanging with friends and and trying local beer or beer you never even heard of. With great views of the lake and a great atmosphere, this is a great hangout in old Mandeville.

Scott F.

Yelp
Nice beer selection & the service has greatly improved. I'm going to give 3 Stars because of service improvements. They used to have some bartenders that could care less if they waited on you or not. These day's pretty good overall. They better though because if that place next door opens they are going to get the left overs.

Eric D.

Yelp
I just had the best hot sausage sandwich. I am actually addicted to this now and I'm already thinking about the next time I can have another. Right now Port Orleans is here sharing samples and the atmosphere is awesome. Blue skies on the balcony, great bartenders, and the food here is outstanding; a perfect compliment to a whole lot of great beer!

Michelle R.

Yelp
It could have been better but they don't have wait service. The food was good and a huge selection of beer was a plus. It was different but I d go back again.

Becky K.

Yelp
Largest beer selection on the Northshore. Make sure you get a "Kask Port." Essentially it is a beer passport that you get stamped. If you complete the 100 or so beers (max is three per visit) you recieve a beer stein and you are inducted into the Kask Club. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable about the brews. They do serve mixed drinks and wine as well. There is a small food menu available. Try the cheese plate or the jumbo pretzels. Warning: the dipping mustard that comes with the pretzels is HOT! The upstairs outdoor balcony has breathtaking views of the lake and is dog friendly. The balcony does shut down at 10pm sharp though. The inside stays open later.

Jimmie R.

Yelp
One of the things that's great about craft beer is the people who drink it. It's a diverse, friendly, accepting crowd. Except at Barley Oak,,,, Probably the whitest, most stuck-up crowd I've ever seen at a craft beer bar. Another great thing about craft beer is that it tends to be local. Except at Barley Oak.... Only a hew Louisiana beers, despite the number of good breweries in the state. And many of the taps were Bud Light/Inbev swill. The bartender had no idea that Elysian was produced by Budweiser. I'll give it 2 stars because the location is good.

Farris A.

Yelp
BEST BAR ON THE NORTHSHORE!!! Been going here for close to a decade and I'm still not tired of their AMAZING BRISKET TACOS and DELICIOUS CHEESE PLATES!!! The only thing better than their food is their staff!!! Absolute MUST if you're on the Northshore!!!

Kaylin B.

Yelp
The Barley Oak, situated right on the North shore of Lake Pontchartrain, is a must for a picturesque sunset Happy Hour. The beer list is deep, with a large draft selection of local and nationally known craft brews. Even the variety of wine by the glass is better than most restaurants in the area. In classic Southern style, service is welcoming, but unobtrusive and laid-back. The patios are perfect for a drink after a long walk along the lakefront. Four legged friends are welcomed.

Cody K.

Yelp
Great watering hole overlooking Lake Pontchartrain. The atmosphere is always fun, the drinks are timely, and the food is fantastic. Equally as fun to bring a group, or a quiet date. The Beach House attracts a good crowd of people to mingle with.

Patrick G.

Yelp
I used to like this bar a lot but during covid, the bartenders aren't wearing masks and aren't enforcing customers to wear masks when they order at the bar. As someone who is a restaurant manager and has had covid, this made me really uncomfortable and disappointed. Hopefully they change their ways ‍

Christopher W.

Yelp
A new favorite stop while riding on the Tammany Trace on the Northshore. The Barley Oak has a good but not great beer selection and a short but sweet food menu. The prices here wont break the bank. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and it was great with a pepper jelly vinegarette, plenty chicken breast and fresh greens made for a great salad. My friend had a delicious Reuben sandwich with a smoky potato salad. What makes this place great is the great views of the lake and it being right on Lakeshore drive. I will be back.

Scott N.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and fabulous bar food! The tacos were amazing and they have games below. The view is nice from the balcony and you can watch the sunset over the lake. The service was excellent!

Christopher Y.

Yelp
The Barley Oak is in my opinion, the number one bar to go to if you just want to relax with friends. From the view to the Interior, everything about this place says come on in and stay a while. It is located on the Lakefront of Old Mandeville and you can sit out on the front patio and just take in the view of Lake Pontchartrain after a long day at work. Sit out and watch the sun go down or sit inside next to the fireplace on the extremely comfortable leather couches. Either way, you will not be disappointed coming here. Even the food menu is worth checking out. If you have issues with climbing stairs due to any kind of handicap or intoxication, there is an elevator. There is also a decent size parking lot located behind the bar for convenient parking.

Ann F.

Yelp
This is a great gathering place and bar grub is pretty good. Great view. Unfortunately there is only one bartender (blond female) who is personable and acts like she wants to be there and is happy to serve customers.

Angie T.

Yelp
The Barley Oak is a beautiful bar in Mandeville. A grand staircase takes you up to the wonderful balcony where you'll be delighted with amazing views of Lake Pontchartrain. There are many tables for you to sit and relax while taking in the great scenery. Inside is pretty great too. Abundant plush leather chairs and exposed wood beams gives it a very sophisticated and masculine feel. The beer selection is quite extensive and they have a pretty nice wine list as well. I didn't try the food, but some of the neighboring tables did and it looked good and smelled amazing. Definitely give The Barley Oak a try! I think you'll love it as much as I do.

Kelly H.

Yelp
This is a very nice bar - right on the lake. Good selection of drafts - including the at times elusive Shiner Bock as well several more or less esoteric micro brews and handful of European beers. Friendly staff of bartenders, nice atmosphere - the fireplace is a welcome sight on cool nights - friendly patrons, cold beer....what more can you ask for in a local bar?

Anne-Marie F.

Yelp
Great location. Great staff. Great drinks. I don't think anyone should go to the Northshore without checking out Barley Oak! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for events and newly tapped beers, of which they have many. They always have the best and newest beers, and their staff is knowledgeable when it comes to making recommendations based on your tastes. They also have great food! The tacos, the grilled cheese sandwich, the sausage - it's all great! There is ample parking for vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles. Only downside is they no longer allow dogs inside. Totally understandable, though it was one of our favorite aspects of going here. Dogs are still allowed on the balcony and on the ground floor, so be prepared to sit outside if you bring your pup!

Marielle S.

Yelp
This an awesome spot! Located on the lake, The Barley Oak offers a nice selection of beer in an quaint atmosphere. We stopped in here just to see the place, because I had heard raves about it. There was a pretty decent crowd and it was a nice day, so people were sitting outside enjoying the weather. The bartenders were friendly and were nice enough to let me sample a couple of the beers before I actually chose one. They have a nice selection of tap beers and a few fancy bottles as well. I didn't try any of the food, but they have a pretty big menu in case you want a burger with your beer.

Drew M.

Yelp
I've had shrimp tacos from south Florida to the Carolinas and Barley Oak has the best hands down!! Cool place on the water front and great service. The bartender makes a good strong gin n tonic.

Ben S.

Yelp
Stopped in with friends. Great service. Many beers on tap and a fridge full of other various bottles/cans. They have a nice patio to sit on and a great indoor atmosphere.
