Barnes & Noble Looks to In-Store Restaurants for a Boost | Eater

"This location was the first of the Kitchen concept, debuting in November 2016 in Edina, Minnesota, and launched the bookseller’s push into full-service, in-store dining that pairs a condensed best-seller–focused bookstore with a restaurant." - Whitney Filloon

Lovely store, my niece found some great books on tarot card reading and some fantasy fiction. I enjoyed a nice tall cold beverage from Starbucks. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Google
Well, it's a Barnes & Noble! There pretty well known for having nice stores. This one did not disappoint. I mainly just went into look around, and it was well laid out and organized. The employees of both the Starbucks and Barnes & Noble we're very kind, greeted me at the door and asked if I needed anything. It's just a fun place to browse or go get something you need or want.

Google
I never NEED more books, but I had a gift card and wanted to treat myself. It’s smaller than the other location I visit, but I was able to find a great selection. I was searching for a certain title and based on my web search, inventory showed it available, but when an associate searched they found zero. Perhaps there was a system error, but as I did a second loop around the tables, I found a stack of them as if the universe didn’t want me to leave without it. Clean store, helpful staff, great selection. Thanks!

I visited Barnes and Noble at Edina today to use a gift card. I read previous reviews so i was aware of some negative reviews. I sat at a table and waited and realized no waiter/waitress was coming. The staff saw me waiting but didn't approach me. I went to the cashier and learned I had to place my order with her. If the cafe had a sign telling customers to place orders there I missed it. The grilled cheese turkey was okay but did not impress me, hence the 4 stars.

This location has a special place in my heart. There's so much value that this location offers. Cafe, and so many nooks and crannies that you can tuck away and read in. I think this location is well lit and has helpful staff. Well kept location. I want to return and try more items on the cafe menu. I love how intentional the lighting is in the cafe. You can study and have a meeting and not feel like you're in the dark. The location is connected to a great mall with a lot of options to it. You can get lunch and come back and continue to enjoy the book you left. I admire the music collection this location offers, they were having a theft problem so they moved vinyl to the front. Let me know what you like about this location.

Google
Such a well taken-care-of store. I was impressed with the way they displayed the books, the interior decor was fancy, and they even had seats and tables to sit at! The café was gorgeous. The café crew press the sandwiches/ bagels and add whip cream to the drinks. I'm heavily impressed with it all.

Google
Clean, and quiet. Great and helpful staffs. The place is alot smaller compared to other Barnes & Noble.

Google
Stumbled upon this gem and wow! The food is most excellent and the service impeccable! Whoever knew a small restaurant inside of a bookstore could be so amazing! They even have little etch a sketches for kids to curb boredom. The plancha cooked salmon is incredible and I'm not even much of a fish person. Stop by before or after getting some books and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I'm trying to get back into my reading era. I was looking for a particular book which was on a table right when I walked in the door. I decided to browse around a bit to see if anything else caught my eye (not that I needed to spend anymore money). I liked that this location had a lot of seating areas. It was pretty busy when I went (on a Sunday afternoon). Seemed well staffed, I seen them running around helping people which is good. Parking at the Galleria feels like an extreme sport at times. They have a lot of parking but it's tight & always packed.

Yelp
November 2024 marked my second year having a premium membership at Barnes & Noble (B&N), and Paper Source. I signed up for it at a Paper Source store in 2023. It pays for itself, as I tend to buy enough stuff every year. At the Paper Source store, I picked a tote bag and loved it. Getting a free tote bag is part of the premium membership. I tend to use it when I need more room from buying more stuff than I had anticipated. I place my purse in it and it becomes my personal item on my flight home. It's roomy, durable, and has an interior pocket that fits my passport and NEXUS card perfectly. I wanted to get my second tote bag, but from B&N. After working remotely from the comfort of my hotel room, I went out to check out this B&N at Edina, as part of the posh Galleria Shopping Center. I had no problem finding a parking spot fairly close to the bookstore's mall entrance. I backed into the spot and headed inside. This B&N is the largest one that I have ever visited. Despite its massive size, it felt comfortable and cozy walking in. I can see myself spending hours reading here. I spent an hour checking everything out. I loved everything that I was looking at. A LEGO typewriter set. A mini Spirograph kit. 2025 calendars. An elephant stapler. If I weren't ready for dinner, I would have been here longer. It does have a cafe with sandwiches, baked goods, and beverages. The seating area for the cafe is also massive. I'll need to check it out next time. The cafe looked equally as comfy as the bookstore. I ended up getting a Pusheen 2025 calendar that doubles as a mousepad. It's pink. It's Pusheen. It's awesome! I did indeed get the mini Spirograph kit. I grew up with Spirograph. It's nice having a smaller, working version of it. I found the tote bag section. There were two designs. I liked the black one with the gold ampersand between books. The construction was similar to my Paper Source one. I used it as my personal item heading home from Winnipeg. It also travelled with me by car from the Twin Cities to Winnipeg. It safely housed all my snacks nicely. I got Michael at the checkout. He was so friendly and personable. He got my phone number associated with my account. He found it and made sure that I got my tote bag on the house. I got my discount on my two items. I paid with a credit card. All went well. He asked me whether I wanted to use my tote bag immediately. I said yes. He loaded my items into the bag and handed it to me. It felt great in my hand. It also felt good on my shoulder. This B&N is awesome! I look forward to returning. I want to check out the cafe and hang out at the bookstore. (9)

Yelp
This book store in the galleria is large, but still manages to have a cozy feel. They have a huge jigsaw puzzle section, legos, magazines, as well as a gift items among their rows and rows of books. I love that there is a coffee shop and restaurant inside as well as many cozy chairs to read in. I go when I need an escape- they let you browse and relax without a pushy selling atmosphere.

Yelp
I just had a fantastic shopping experience here today! As is typical, I was able to find what I needed. Today, though, I needed a bit of help. No sweat! Everyone was very helpful and also quite friendly. The gentleman that I had asked found the specific book that I was looking for almost immediately and then was able to point me to a particular section as well. I also was able to grab the latest issue of Harper's Magazine AND the current Barron's. The young lady who rang me up was an absolute delight as well. It was a very bright spot in my week. Books and cheer are a great fix for this year.

Yelp
There is something about this location that has my heart. I find myself going to this location frequently even though there is a location literally .25 miles from my residence. It might be the remodel and open feel? I am not really sure! Their staff is always great and welcoming and eager to show you around. I have noticed their selection is smaller than some others and I do frequently find myself not able to locate the intended book I am seeking but I always leave with something in hand...oh well!

Yelp
I went in to find a book and I had the best help I could ever ask for. Joe was extremely knowledgeable of books and recommended ones I've never heard of based off the books I said I liked to read. He was a joy to talk with about books and authors. I would recommend 10/10 to go here and find Joe if You need some help finding a new book!

Yelp
Everyone there is not friendly at all. Workers don't greet customers, it's the other way around. I said thank you after I asked a question and didn't receive any response. Unwelcoming and snobby employees work there. What a shame it was a very nice Barnes and noble building. Never again will I step foot there.

Yelp
I like the remodel, its sort of edgy, just using the original cement floor. I also like the new bathroom, they have put the tiles in their in a funky way. There are plenty of chairs to sit and read. I am guilty of reading an entire book today when I went in my son! I asked two people for help finding books and both times they walked me to the section and explained where the book section I wanted started and ended. It seems they have added in more books, they used to have a more open space with more chairs, this time more 50% off books in the middle of the store. Although they are in the basement, it is well lit from plentiful windows. Otherwise, it is a pretty typical Barnes and Noble. Oh, except the food. At the Ridgedale B&N they have all this terrible processed "heat it up in the microwave" food, here I'm told (we have not eaten here) that the food is off a menu and much better.

Yelp
Never seen a Barnes and Noble like this. Very modern and a completely different design, which I kind of like. I say this place is a three-star for the time being, but it has the potential to grow on me. What surprised me most of all was their food. Very satisfactory. Kid spaghetti was good, not amazing but good. The breakfast burrito though... I had low expectations and that blew me away. It was basically a California burrito with potatoes in it! Awesome! I have not seen anyplace in the Midwest put potatoes in a burrito so I was very pleased. Overall, I will rate the store a three and the burrito a four! Bring California burritos to the Midwest!!!!!!!

Yelp
This update is unbelievable. It actually has a restaurant in it, with very comfortable seating. It's all on one level, the lower one. There are plenty of staff to help you. The restaurant takes up a good amount of space so the book side has a lot of room, but not so much that you are running all over. The new books are displayed nicely as you walk in, the kid's section is in the back. The check out is to the left and so are fiction, mystery, romance, teen, and fantasy.sci fi novels. The bathrooms are next to the check out and they are beautiful. I recommend signing up for the discount, $20 a year. I saved a lot with a coupon. It's right next to a parking garage and there is an elevator and stairway very close and handy.

Yelp
I always love perusing Barnes & Noble, and this renovated location is a delight. The space is beautiful, and encourages customers to linger and relax - especially in the atrium area, which is full of great natural light the rest of the space lacks. Finding something I want has never been an issue here, as I could easily drop waaaaay too much money on some good reads. I'm always irritated by how many toys are in the kids section, but from a retail point of view I understand the benefit of diversifying those offerings. It also means there's a DUPLO table for kids to play at, which my toddler loves. So I really can't complain. Barnes & Noble has an okay good kids program - a discount when you sign up, $5 off every $100 you spend (which includes kids books AND toys). They also have story times in-store and summer reading program that I'm sure will be more relevant as the kid gets older. I haven't had the delight of trying the restaurant yet, but I'm looking forward to it on another occasion.

Yelp
Love the remodel, I went to a book signing and discussion here. Really nice layout. I like the bar area, we had a drink after the chat. I'd like to go back and do some shopping. They have plenty of events happening. Good location!

Yelp
I like this bookstore. I would have to say that this is probably one of the more larger bookstores in the area. (I haven't seen the one in downtown). I like just roaming around and hoping that the next book I pick from a shelf is something worth reading. Anyway, this place used to be open til 11pm M-Sat, but they recently changed closing time to 10pm. I was very disappointed because there were a few nights I'd stay until closing. I just like the atmosphere I guess. People who work here are also very friendly. They are always helpful. Here's a little more information: 1st floor - Magazines, Birthday Cards, Journal books, Music & Videos, Bargain Books, Cookbooks, New Released Books The floor down - Children's Books, Cafe (Starbucks), Photography books, Lit books, Minnesota books, Current events books, Religion, Sociology books, Restrooms

Yelp
Here is a Barnes & Noble I just can't seem to get down with. An odd situation given that I like most B&Ns. Here's the problem; I dig magazines. As a single dad, I don't have time for long books and whats nots. So magazines give me the ability to read a little then deal with whatever fire I am needed to put out. This B&N doesn't seem to get the mags soon enough and in enough quantity. Now that I write it down, I realize that most Edina-ites (Edinans? Ediners?) aren't as cool as I, and just don't read the mags I read. Tattoo, motorcycle, random weird things, etc Still, the vibe here is just off. I go, I like, but others B&Ns are better. Surprisingly, Eden Prairie's is the best. Hmmmmm.

Yelp
Barnes & Noble will not even match their own online prices. Why are you going to be a store with different prices for different people . This particular location has a find way of making you feel completely inadequate as soon as you walk in the door . I love the same or however I choose to censor myself. given The Choice, shop online Amazon is still cheaper and now I guess I understand why book stores are going out of business... sad No customer-service
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
I have been critical of the new B&N location in the basement of the Galleria. However, on my most recent visit July 24 I was pleasantly surprised. A "bookstore ambience" has returned about 80%. I may even be persuaded to have a coffee and roll in their restaurant. The sales people seem MUCH happier. And now...so am I.

Yelp
This is a very busy Barnes and Noble bookstore! I'm not used to so much foot traffic that goes on in there! Once I walked in, you can hear many voices buzzing throughout the store. I felt a little overwhelmed with so many tables and shelves of books that spread across the floor. I was so used to knowing where everything was in Borders that walking through Barnes and Noble doors made me look like a lost little puppy. I usually look for the "buy 1 get 1 half off books" and I walked around several times, and up and down the escalator several times before coming up to a small round table that read 'buy 1 get 1 half off'. I was quite disappointed in the selection. And after walking around several times I was hoping to run into someone who worked there to help me but I suppose they were busy helping others that were also looking for their book section. I was also looking through their bargain selection and there wasn't much to look at. Plus, they had other books in that section that weren't really bargain buys. I felt like they didn't have the right signs up - maybe they just had too many and it became overwhelming, but it just didn't feel intuitive. I definitely didn't know where I was going and the deals/selection just weren't doing it for me. I think I will stick to my Borders and Half Price Book stores. The only thing I like about B&N....they have a Starbucks!
google avatar

Darika S.

Yelp
The selection is pretty good, the people at the counter aren't that talkative and the cafe is sad. I go downstairs to the cafe and the cafe workers are slow which isn't a surprise and usually expected, but my cappuccino was made correctly but the girl had attitude, another expectation so there goes her tip. It was nice to see that the cafe is getting remodeled so that's good news. I get out my nook and there is no wi-fi access! Wha? So I had to go back upstairs and wi-fi comes back but guess what, there are only 10 chairs in the whole store! They can sneak a few chairs in corners here and there but they didn't so I ended up putting my nook away and browsing through books, (so old-fashioned). I love their puzzle selection and nook accessories were pretty good too.

Yelp
Barnes and Noble Bookstore in the Galleria recently moved across the hall from their old location and added a real restaurant not the Starbucks which was in their old store. Based on a positive review in the Taste Section of the Star Tribune my wife and I decided to go for dinner and then shopping for books on a recent Saturday evening. The ambience of the restaurant is modern casual - very comfortable and only moderately loud. It was about half full at 5:30 with an older crowd to which we also belong. The menu is fairly limited and includes a mushroom ragu, salmon, grilled cheese sandwich, mac and cheese and a burger. My wife had the grilled cheese which came with tomato soup - a real American classic. I tried her sandwich which was excellent - a mixture of three cheeses grilled just right. My wife also had a glass of a merlot by Emmolo of Napa Valley. It was excellent with a lot of subtle undertones which are often lacking in Merlots these days. I had the brisket burger which was also very good. Meat, cheese, onion, lettuce, onion and pickles - not over the top with fried eggs, bacon, etc as are some gourmet burgers. My burger was served with crispy potatoes which appeared to be puréed potatoes deep fried. They were crisp on the outside with a soft interior. Sort of an upscale tater tot. Very good. We finished by sharing a butterscotch pot de creme. All very nice. Service was friendly and efficient. There was also a live guitarist. Afterward we went shopping for books, bought a couple and went home. A very enjoyable evening. I highly recommend both the restaurant and the new store.

Yelp
It seems that B&N is revamping their business model and moving into the restaurant business. I visited their newly opened café for lunch shortly after it opened and could not resist sharing my opinion... Positive: The interior looks very stylish: loved the coffee bar, lounge area and the design of the café overall. The menu is compact but covers your basics very well: salmon, chicken, burger, vegetarian option - they have it all! My salmon dish came too pink at first but after I sent it back to be cooked more thorough it was excellent. I wish they asked me HOW I wanted it done in the first place. My date had the brick chicken dish and it came over salted and with mashed potatoes that were way below room temperature. She sent it back and asked for mushroom polenta, which was delicious once it came. Negative: It seems that the staff is absolutely clueless and uncoordinated in their efforts. The hostess is checking back with the waiting staff on available tables... when the tables are VISIBLY set up. It took forever to get two cappuccinos. They were as good as expected, but the time it took to make them was... unbelievably long. Price point. $24 for an entrée at a book store with untrained staff? I love Barnes and Noble as a BOOK store. It is nice to know they are experimenting and adopting, however I will give this café some time to figure things out before I am back.

Yelp
Amazing time at the Barnes and Noble Restaurant! My family and I decided to try it out for a late lunch today and had such a great experience. We were seated immediately and our drinks order taken, after about 5 minutes the manager came over to apologize to us for our coffees not being ready yet and told us they were on the way. Thinking nothing of it we got our coffees a minute or two later and ordered lunch. After we finished (the breakfast burrito was AMAZING!) the waitress came over with spoons and told us the manager had decided to give us a free dessert! As we split the butterscotch cream the bill came and we saw that not only had we been given a free dessert but our coffees had also been comp'd for our 'long' wait! The manager and the staff really went out of their way to make sure we were happy and well taken care of today. Thank you Luz!

Megan J.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to study. You can browse books over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. The classy, yet laid back atmosphere is perfect for a lunch date or a place to kill some time. The only downside is the price point- slightly expensive, but nothing I wouldn't expect, being that it is in the Galleria. Food is good and service is genuine, but not speedy.

Yelp
Very helpful staff. Clean and well stocked with books I'm looking for. Parking is sometimes an issue.

Yelp
The distinct smell of new paper freshly adorned with ink; aisles of writ adventures beckoning the passers by. A colorful compilation of insundry items provoking the senses, creating a flow of movement and life drawing one through and into the never ending maze of books. What is there not to love?

Bella M.

Yelp
NEVER COMING BACK HERE. They made me feel so uncomfortable last weekend when I came to visit. Me and my friends were innocently walking around the store just looking around, we were in the record section and noticed some workers continuously checking on us in the back of the store. It didn't bother us at first so we sort of blew it off. But then as we were exiting the store we had what looked like the entire first floor staff walking by us judging us and standing in front of the entrance watching us. It was annoying and kinda bothered us that they would just assume we would attempt to shoplift by the sight of our appearances. It was offense so 3 out of my 5 friends decided to say something about it cause it bothered us and we wanted them to know. After consulting with them about the issue they said it was "protocol". This made me furious. But that wasn't the end of it, while 3 of my friends were consulting the staff one of my other friends and I decided to walk around the furniture store across the Barnes and Noble, little did I know (that got pointed out later) WE WERE BEING FOLLOWED INTO THE OTHER STORE BY A MALE EMPLOYEE!! That was a HUGE invasion of my privacy especially as a young female it made me shake with discomfort and fear. So ya you will never see me or my friends in a Barnes and Noble again. And by the way barnes and noble you don't need to snap that hard on the whole shoplifting thing, nobodies trynna steal novels.

Ron S.

Yelp
They used to have a very good music department but forget about it now. It's a joke.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed! After we sat down to order we were told to leave because my friend had a water from Starbucks and I had a coffee drink. Even though my friend just finished eating there and I was meeting her. No one told us ahead of time, no signage saying anything about "outside food" but they waited until we sat and placed an order and asked us to dump the drink or leave. The irony is that they brew Starbucks at their restaurant and in the past I have had thier coffee and had to return it back 3 times because they admitted that they didn't know how to make it "like Starbucks". No apology, no consideration, and no ownership but the manager or someone claiming to be the manager -- Samantha basically kicked us out! When we asked to speak to the manager she said she was the manager but yet didn't have a card and had to write down her name on a card with no contact e-mail. Poor customer service we felt very disrespected. They treat their customers based on how the "fit" in their newly renovated store. Your customers make your store not the other way around. If you keep mistreating people it doesn't matter if you have a nicely renovated store because customers come for the experience. You ruined the experience for us. It is unfortunate because this was my 6th/7th time going there and there are some attendants on the B&N side that are really nice. The restaurant side needs to be checked because they can't keep disrespecting people like that. It is not about what it was but the unprofessional and disrespectful manner it was done! Not going back!

Yelp
My favorite Barnes and Noble store. 2 floors of books. Friendly staff with a bigger than normal video section. The only downside is not much seating.

P D.

Yelp
Bad coffee. The redo looks great and all but I ordered a latte from their new cafe and it was one of the worst I've ever had. And at $4.79 + tip it wasn't cheap. There are so many good choices for coffee in the city, they really need to step it up.

Erik B.

Yelp
I like this Barnes and Nobel the most. The selection is rather large, and you can find good deals. If you look in the non recent albums in the music section, you can find super deals like Van Halen's "Fair Warning" for $8! I also like The Galleria because they have a lot of fancy stores.

Anonymous N.

Yelp
Manager very rude to me and threatened me. I was only browsing and trying out some of the products, but they deemed that not okay. If I can avoid returning I will, and I would recommend anyone else do the same.

Liesl W.

Yelp
I needed to make a return. I also had my baby with me in his carrier. No one was at the downstairs desk, so I went upstairs. I waited behind two people at the Guest Services desk, only to be told that I would have to go to the cashier to make a return. Then I asked if anyone was working the downstairs desk, since it had been empty. They said yes--he must have been on his break. Since there was a huge line at the cashier upstairs (not all the tills were open, though there were two people at Guest Services and Another at the Nook-selling kiosk), I went back downstairs, stood there for a few minutes without being acknowledged, and finally say I would like to make a return. He looks up and tells me I need to make the return upstairs. I just left.

Yelp
The cafe is on the lower level of the store, it is cold, and you cannot get telephone service here. There are some really cool cafe staff, and then there are several annoying and obnoxious ones. Unlike other Barnes and nobles cafes, the staff here never offers to bake your favorite treat if they ran out of it. There is this really young girl who is trying so hard to be such a pushy sales person that she is so off putting. She's always suggesting a treat without listening to what you actually want. Then there is the older one i think her name is Kim who never smiles, and takes your order grudgingly, you would think that she is paying for your order out of her own pocket. Then there are the couple of times where the manager was asking the new staff what extra stuff they did and the young annoying one was all excitedly sharing how she sold X number of cookies to customers who didn't even want them.
