Barnes and Noble is under new management these days and it's made the store worse than ever. I've been out of town for the last month and a half visiting family overseas and now that I'm back, I'm so disappointed with my favorite local bookstore. Usually my husband writes the yelp reviews, but I'm taking this one personally.
I'm an avid reader, two books a week at least. I was excited to go into the store to pick up some of the new releases I've missed out on while on vacation. At first, I didn't even recognize one person while walking into the store, and that was in itself very strange as I am a frequent visitor to the store. Once I finally found an employee that I knew, I asked what's up with everything. I was told that Brooke has left to another store (why??) and the new store manager, Ryan, is a complete jackass to the staff. That's very unfortunate, because it definitely affects the personalities of the staff when their boss treats them horribly. You can tell just by the atmosphere in there that they are being understaffed and overworked and no one is happy anymore. I'm told many of the long term employees have recently quit or are looking to get another job. I did get the opportunity to see the new manager and he looks like a staunchy potato with an unpleasant personality. Great, just what that store needs. I also saw as he just stood there slowly rearranging and adding more toys onto an already overstuffed table and looking around while his employee was struggling to help more than one guest lined up at the customer service desk. That's setting a terrible example of leadership.
As for the store itself, it looks different. Not necessarily bad, but not great. There are many toys featured all over the store. It's a bookstore, People! I understand the toys and gift sections being in there, but can you please keep that stuff in their own sections? I don't need to see those white pop toys everywhere I turn. I'd rather see themed book tables and displays at the bookstore. There were books fallen on the ground in many of the isles and I saw a child kicking one around on the floor. Where are all the employees to help control this? I saw the one busy girl at the customer service desk, one busy cashier up at the checkout, the employee I knew running back and forth to try and help both, and the one manager, again just standing there. I've never seen the store so understaffed before. My husband and I bought coffee and cookies from the Starbucks Cafe and my cookie was hard and didn't seem very fresh. I asked if there were any nice warm cookies and was told that they're not allowed to bake cookies throughout the day anymore. What?? That's quite a change! I guess that freshly baked smell won't be pulling people over there anymore. My husband was looking through dvds and had no one approach him at all and he said one older gentleman was visibly upset by the lack of help in the dvd department. What is going on in this store? It's always been a fun and decent experience going into the Barnes and Noble, but I feel like that's not the way either the company itself or the new manager wants it to be now for customers. Otherwise there would be more staff throughout the store and no one would leave feeling slighted.
I'll miss the conversations that came with happy, friendly employees and managers. I'll miss Brooke's recommendations. I'll miss freshly baked cookies.
Maybe whoever hired the new manager or whoever is in charge of staff budgeting and merchandising on the corporate end should actually walk through as a customer and see exactly what I'm talking about.
Plus, the lack of employees or cashiers in the dvd section and the checkout towards the back of the store is most likely causing the store a lot of theft. My husband says he's sure he saw a group of teens walk right out with merchandise into the mall.
I'm just so disappointed. Please fix this! I don't want one of my favorite bookstores to have to close down, which I'm sure is the direction it's heading now.
