Barney's Beanery - Santa Monica - Review - Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Barney’s Beanery in Santa Monica doesn’t hold a candle to the allure (and history) of the original West Hollywood location, but considering your pretty dismal options in this particular area, Barney’s kitschy vibe (and very solid beer stock) feels like heaven. The food is typical bar standards, but just a little bit better than you’d expect. Bonus - their great front patio is a perfect place to get your buzz on and watch vacationing families regret everything. photo credit: Jakob Layman" - Brant Cox

Where To Eat With Boring People - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Your older brother who’s married with two kids is in town and his only requirement is a restaurant with chicken fingers. They’re obviously staying in Santa Monica, so just make it easy and head to Barney’s Beanery on the Promenade. Everybody will find something they like on the massive menu, and once conversation moves solely to weather-related topics, Barney’s impressive beer stock will get you through the rest. " - Brant Cox

We have visited this restaurant several times in the past and have generally had a good experience. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was very disappointing. The food was overly greasy, and some dishes even arrived cold. To make matters worse, we had to wait a very long time for our meals, which was quite frustrating. The service was also not up to standard — the staff seemed rather unfriendly and inattentive, which made the overall atmosphere less welcoming. We truly hope this was just an off day, as we’ve enjoyed this place before. However, based on this latest visit, we are hesitant to return anytime soon.

Google
Friendly service. HUGE portions of food. All the sports!! Pool tables. Can't go wrong at the LA staple whether you are local or visiting. During big games, it gets busy, but still feels like a down home neighborhood spot. Indoor and patio seating. Plenty of screens, so you can catch all the action ⚾️🏈🏒🏀🏐⚽️ Food is delicious and portions are big enough to share or take some home.

Google
Great place on promenade to watch sport events while drinking in one of the most iconic breweries. It’s usually packed and need to come before the games to be able to get in. Follow us on instagram @gemislist

It was chill when I went. The drinks were good. The decor was very fun. Did enjoy myself. The staff was very friendly.

Google
Place is beautiful, Food is good. Service is disappointing ; we noticed waitresses seem to run everywhere except to people calling them to order or ask the bill ( we were sitting outside so maybe that’s the reason because we noticed some other customers around us becoming impatient) ; the one who seems to be the manager is the opposite of smiling face.

Nice place to hang out. Good vibes. Big food portions and nice drinks.

Google
What a fun place! I have passed by in a million times and I did not even really know about its existence. I was in the mood for chili, so I ordered to go. Settled right in on the 3rd promenade, it has an outdoor patio, a fun bar and a large amount of seating. Christmas lights and lava lamps decorate the inside. I paid in cash they also take card. My chili was ready in moments. It came with some very nice warm tortilla chips. All of that was gluten free. So very tasty too.

Google
Cool place. Love the bathroom decor! The bar is also fashionably set up, complete with lava lamps for a groovy ambiance. The food was not the best and did not live up to expectations. I had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich, which seemed to have the smallest amount of meat possible. It was more like a grilled cheese. We also had very little cheese on the French onion soup....just disappointing.

Yelp
Cool spot to catch a game. Came here on a Sunday to catch the AFC divisional round game. I think this place is more of an "eagles bar", but we just wanted a place to sit down and watch the game. They have so many TVs so it's awesome for that. Our server was great, very attentive. I got the chicken tenders and a side of fries. They were pretty solid. My sister got the margarita pizza. She said it was meh. Overall, this spot is cool to watch a game. Not sure I would come back just for a meal.

Yelp
Came here after going mini golfing- I like that they have a variety of many things which made it convenient for a family with 2 kids. They opted for cheese pizza which had A LOT of cheese to the point where my youngest at one point was choking on the cheese so we had to cut her pizza into small squares. The flavor of the pizza was good, half of the pizza looked more well done than the other half. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich, it was good, if I could change something it would be to have a thicker piece of chicken- the chicken itself was really thin, so it wasn't really juicy. My husband got the Gobbler and said it was okay. I got onion rings which were good, crunchy. Our server was great. She had many tables so we weren't greeted right away but she was able to do a great job where we had refills and our food was brought out in a timely manners. There was a football game going on when we arrived and we had a tv right next to us, which my husband loved. Barneys always has a bar vibe and everything around kept my girls entertained. The lighting is dim. Overall, a good experience with Barney's minus the bit choking on the cheese.

Yelp
I absolutely love Barney's Beanery--every location I've visited has been outstanding, and the bartenders are always on point. However, this particular location was an absolute gem. They hosted an incredible Halloween event with karaoke and an all-around amazing atmosphere. The energy was fantastic, and it truly stood out as the best stop during our bar crawl that night. Barney's never disappoints, and I can confidently recommend all their SoCal locations. Whether you're looking for great drinks, good vibes, or a fun night out, this place delivers every time!

Yelp
First Timer I am a home body , anyway my friends wanted me to attend, NICE but different type of vibe drinks were bomb waitress was polite also unique appetizer's

Yelp
Come for the drinks. Service was less than good. Was served wrong drink but bartender wasn't paying attention. Good spot for a drink

Yelp
Really cool place with great vibes! They were playing super cool music the whole time and were a nice spot for dinner for my friends and I before we went to a movie. I got the Barneys classic burger with fries that was actually quite good and not overcooked which I usually expect from a casual restaurant. Service was good, nothing special but nothing to complain about! Overall worth a visit with friends for something fun and easy. Would love to come back and try some of the drinks sometime.

Yelp
I was there for a quick lunch on a Friday. Hostess and server were both friendly and helpful. Loved all the TV's and sporting events. I had the spicy chicken sandwich. It was not what I was expecting, but it was cooked well and fries were good.

Yelp
Pretty decent place to stop for a drink on the promenade. They have a pretty good happy hour deal for food and drinks and I like the outdoor seating they have. Staff is friendly. I was able to bring my dog.

Yelp
We got here and waited 15-20 minutes at one table. Moved to a sunnier table and waited another 15 minutes before begging for help and getting attitude (hadn't even gotten waters yet). Finally ordered. Order wrong. People at old table we'd moved from had already gotten drinks when we had nothing. Realized if you are an adult male or with one you get helped sooner. Bad service until another waiter was kind and helped us out!

Yelp
Barney's Beanery is a longtime bar and restaurant at the Third Street Promenade that is multi-tiered with three levels, pool tables, multiple television, games and a long bar on the main level that caters to a younger audience. I was there for a debate watch party of about 200 people scattered on two floor, so it was difficult to get a waitress to take your order. In fact I didn't see an actual server on the third floor and went downstairs to the main level and order from the bar where they just two (2) bartenders and full of bar patrons. The lack of staffing was annoying. I did order an Iced Tea, Spicy Chicken Sandwich with French Fries which was expensive and somewhat edible that took about twenty-minutes to receive. The bill was like $24 and change and I did leave $30 because the staff that was working was overwhelmed. I counted four servers in a place that had at least 300 patrons indoors and another 50 or so sitting outside on the Promenade. There menu is like a newsletter which is confusing and underwhelming. I have past this place for decades, and my overall impression was not positive in any way, shape or form. Expensive mediocre food with no customer service is no way to run a railroad. I cannot recommend and would not go back with so many other options at the beach in downtown Santa Monica.

Yelp
Pretty cool bar spot. Lots to look at when you enter but they also have outdoor seating. You will get seated by a hostess. They have bar and booth seating. Lots of flatscreen TVs to watch the game so I can see how it would be good for game nights for folks. They have decor of old retro music albums on the tables and walls. Also lots of car license plates as decor so it's kinda divvy feel. Super casual, come as you are. The server was friendly and I like that you pay with a device they have on them so no waiting, they scan it right there and then at your table. Kinda modern and cool. We went in for just drinks and hot chocolate after walking around the 3rd street promenade area. It's January so it's a chilly night so their hot chocolate was perfect! May go back for food next time. Full bar options as well.

Yelp
This place has been around forever and if you've never been, you need to go! It doesn't look very big from the outside but It's so much bigger on the inside! Really busy restaurant not just busy buzzing with people but busy decor and seating that makes complete sense. Go inside and you'll see what I mean. The food is very good and there are so many options for a variety of taste buds. Whether you're a tourist or native, Barney's is a must!

Yelp
A Bar located in a very busy area of the 3rd St., Promenade. The food here is pretty good and I think there are a lot of offerings. I would say this is a good casual place to watch sports as there are lots of TVs everywhere and the space is pretty large. I came here to meet up with some friends to watch horse races and other sports at the same time. My buddy ordered some of the chicken tenders. I thought they were OK. Not bad but definitely something I wouldn't crave. We were here earlier in the day, and I would say the service is a little inconsistent. It really depends on who you flag down for a drink. The place wasn't that full, but I feel like one person almost actively tried to avoid eye contact on purpose whereas another bartender was super attentive and helpful. Overall, this place is solid. Definitely a fun, casual place to watch sports with groups. Just know that you're not gonna get excellent service or top-tier food. But all the above is pretty solid.
google avatar

Carlos Y.

Yelp
Not impressed with place couldn't get a table outside when requested, my coffee latte was cold and got tired of waiting to get my order taken for something to eat or even my bill. Maybe it's a sign not to try the food here. Won't be back again.
google avatar

Heidi W.

Yelp
I'm not a review girly but I just have to say the food here sucks! I just happened to come in on a fight night so obviously they were busy. I ordered food which took forever to arrive and when it did the chicken was still frozen and the fries were cold. I would have complained at least enough to exchange out my meal but no one checked on me while my food was in front of me, which btw was quite a long time. I definitely wouldn't recommend coming hungry but come if you want to watch a game.

Yelp
This is a good place to grab some drinks. I came here on my birthday while bar hopping and drank a few glasses of wine. The wine selection is small, I think they offer only one cab if you're into reds. That's a downer, but luckily it was a decent red. We did not order any actual meals, but we did get some Mozzarella sticks. They weren't bad, but they also weren't the best. I really like the ambience of this place, the lights, hubcaps, license plates and motorcycles give it a unique touch. (However, if you're in Pasadena, you gotta check that one out!! It has an entire bus in the restaurant that you can dine in!) Restrooms were clean and staff were friendly! I hear the men's restroom has kegs as their urinels (ok, I peeked and saw with my own eyes.) Lowkey sad us women only get porcelain thrones.
google avatar

Christopher R.

Yelp
Way understaffed but still the staff they had could have been a lot better and a lot less rude. Place was half full and bartender and servers kept complaining about how busy they were. Waited 25 minutes for a couple of beers and got one flat one. Never got the other one but that tells me all I need to know- bet those lines haven't been cleaned in a month! Again- the place was half empty on a late Friday afternoon. There's a reason...
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
I enjoyed the vibe and decor but found the prices of well drinks to be very high. Service was good, they weren't busy on a Monday. I would return for lunch just not drinks.

Yelp
The short of it: Need a place to park your butt for a bit, while enjoying a cool beer and a burger? This is the place. The long(er) of it: It's the Beanery. Those of you who know the original will recognize this as a "son of the beanery" and it's a decent clone at that. The burgers and anything involving chili are the go to menu items. The rueben was "pretty good" according to my ex-wife (who paid for dinner, which was very nice of her). My son liked the chili-dog, and I enjoyed the turkey melt. The food is a few steps above adequate (for instance the cheese wasn't really melted on my melt), the onion rings were too oily, but the sweet potato fries were solid. So on food alone it's probably a 3-star ranking. The bar has a good selection of tap beers, and makes a good Moscow Mule (according to my ex-wife who, if I didn't mention it before, paid for dinner). The iced tea is also very good. Service was friendly and efficient. So, why 4 stars and not 3? It's the Beanery. It is what it is -- a place to hang out with friends (or even your ex-wife) and just relax, watch a game or just watch the other patrons (who can watch you back, and you can watch them... getting pretty philosophical here). Let me put it this way, the urinals in the me 's room are made from old beer kegs. (Oh, lord, I hope they are old.) Oh, and I did offer to pay for dinner, but my ex-wife insisted.

Paul D.

Yelp
Bad experience at Barney's Beanery on 3rd street. Arrived at entrance and the hostess and so-called security guy refused to let me have a seat to order food. They said to me that I can only order at the bar to go, or take it upstairs, even though there was plenty of seating available, and I was willing to eat at a booth on the outside. They claimed no tables allowed for single seating even though plenty available. I called the general manager later and she apologized but claimed that their kitchen was backed up from a large party so I would not have been happy anyways. Sorry lady, that's not a good excuse. I'm pretty sure the hostess and so-call security guy made a judgement call on how I looked and refused to serve me. Wont be going back again. Btw went to CPK and no problems getting a booth and my meal.

Yelp
Barney's staff are all so nice and friendly. We enjoy sitting at the bar. The place is decorated for Christmas in a very cheery way! The food is not gourmet, or health oriented, but rather comfort food. Believe it or not, the food is tasty. I've had breakfast here, and today my husband and I ordered one of the Nathan Hot Dogs. My husband loves the Ball Park, but i wanted to try the LA Style because the hot dog is bacon wrapped! Everything tastes good with bacon. These hot dogs are bit pricey, but these are REALLY GOOD!!!! The cocktails are good too!! Overall our 2 drinks and hot dogs were around $60. Barney's is not just a sports bar. One can come here for just a quick drink, or a meal. The vibe it kitch fun!

Andy S.

Yelp
GAME DAY RED FLAG!! The TVs are preset and many cannot be changed. So if it is busy and the game you want is not on the big screens, you might be stuck watching small TV from a distant table. Staff is inflexible about this, I am not sure if that has to do with how their TVs are setup or what. But the main reason to go out is to see games you can't get at home. So that is a problem especially given what happens when the small TVs you are watching aren't being managed. They have NFL Sunday ticket but whoever is managing the TVs is clearly not a football fan. The early network schedule ended and the TVs we were watching switched to the late game even though the early game was close and not over. Blame NFL and CBS not Barney's for that. But we informed our server ASAP and she said find the manager. With two minutes left the manager was not available or on top of it. So we missed the last 2 minutes of a close game. At the end there were two TVs showing blank NFL Sunday ticket logo and the rest of TVs were all on the same game. LAME, never coming back.

David S.

Yelp
Worst service ever. On Friday, I went there to assure they would be playing the college football games today. They assured they were so I came back today. Got there early to get a good seat. Had some drinks, some food, my game started, and at the beginning of the second quarter they changed every TV to a different game with zero warning or explanation. When I asked, I got, "sorry". Pitiful. If you are in Santa Monica, there are a couple real sports bars. Don't come here.

S O.

Yelp
Seeking the comfort of a cozy dive bar with decent food, friendly customers, quirky decor, and great service? This is the place. There's a surprising amount of room once you step inside and a nice patio area directly on the promenade for fresh ocean breezes and people watching. They have vegetarian and gluten free options. And if sports are your thing, there are tons of TVs with games on. The music has always been good when I've been, lots of nostalgic throwbacks, and they play it at just the right volume so you can still carry on a conversation while enjoying the vibe.

Yelp
Love the ambiance, a lot of tv's, a place where u can have a beer and a appetizer and forget about everything, love the decoration, even the restrooms are fun, the food was ok, the server was nice and polite, she was the only one running everywhere taking orders. we went around 5:30 pm and it was empty. inside is huge!!!! you can sit inside or outside on the patio and see people walking on the promenade.
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
I was in Santa Monica shortly after landing at LAX and the first thing I wanted to see was the water and I wanted to get a drink. After slowly realizing there are no alcohol options along the water at 9am, I walked a couple blocks back. Then stumbled upon Barney's Beanery! My server was wonderful. She was very busy but did not skip a beat. I had a fried chicken club and two margaritas. They were strong and cold. Just the way I like it. The sandwich was perfect as well. Nothing fancy. But it was great. If you're in the area I'd definitely stop by if it catches your eye.

Epicurean T.

Yelp
On Thanksgiving evening we had fantastic service from Diana! Thanksgiving dinner had generous portions of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry juice, and stuffing. The beer selection was excellent and with numerous TVs we were able to watch multiple games.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
We came in to use the restroom and were drawn in. The decor was very interesting and we decided to hang out. The server was amazing and had great recommendations. The snacks we ordered were fresh and complemented well with the drinks. A great spot to hang with some friends to catch up and have a drink.

Yelp
Came to this bar on a Wednesday night and they were fairly slow. The decorations are fun and they have a big menu on newspaper type paper. I ordered the California salad wrap and it's supposed to come with dressing but they forgot it so I had to chase someone down to get some ranch because it was really dry. It was good size but the ingredients could have been spread out better (turkey, Brie, avacado, bacon and tomato, cheddar)-some bites were very leafy. The bacon was also very chewy. My boyfriend got the burger and hash browns but they brought fries instead. Overall the waitstaff seemed uninterested. It looks like they have some space heaters and you can dine outside. We were able to park free for 90 mins in a garage across the street.
google avatar

Maxine K.

Yelp
A really great spot on 3rd street! My go-to is a fried chicken club sandwich. It's literally the BEST! Their margaritas are quite good as well. Be prepared to wait during game times.

Juan P.

Yelp
If I could give this place no stars I would. I came in today to have dinner and watch the game, sat at the bar and no one acknowledged me. I had to ask for a menu and neither bartender greeted me nor took my order. I had sat there for 20 plus minutes and left. Never coming back to this horrible place.

Kara L.

Yelp
Excellent service, ambiance, and drinks. This is a perfect place to enjoy your time on the boulevard. Our server is delightful and the vibe of the place is exemplary. Come here and enjoy the positive energy of this place and the hospitality. Lots of locals here, which says it all.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
Food was delicious - wide selection of items to choose from. Sandwiches were huge! They don't skimp on the fresh fruit. Drink sizes are large. Prices are decent for the area. Service was very prompt and attentive.
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
Came here to grab a drink with my lady and I have to say the service was decent enough, but the issue was the drinks we ordered. We both got mojitos and upon tasting them, we immediately asked for the check. All the alcohol was at the bottom of the cup, so after stirring it, we just tasted the same alcohol but watered down. Completely flavorless, I hope this was just a fluke.
google avatar

Debbie S.

Yelp
We had a few minutes to kill while waiting on some friends to have dinner at another restaurant. We decided to stop in here and had a drink. It was a wonderful experience. The decor was a throwback to another time. I loved all the lights hang everywhere, the place had a real relaxed vibe to it. There are lots of TVS so a good place to catch a game. The bartenders make excellent drinks and are very welcoming. We will definitely come here again the next time we are in town.
google avatar

Ana T.

Yelp
Decent customer service. Not overcrowded. I like the ambiance. Viewed some sports highlights. Ordered the "Bad Apple" cider. Enjoyed this drink. The Mac n cheese wedges were ok. I consider this dish "bar food" that aids in soaking up the booze.
google avatar

GianCarlo C.

Yelp
Cool spot to watch a game and enjoy a variety of beers on tap. Huge big screen in front of the bar almost chaotic decor on the inside makes you feel a little out of your mind but set the tone for your experience. They have some funky double seated chairs for couples at the bar. Came for bar crawl had a fun time mingling they have trivia and a pool table as well.
google avatar

Rose C.

Yelp
I have come here a few times with friends, once during a bar crawl but usually after dinner somewhere else when we just want another drink nearby. The bar has a definite aesthetic that can be fun. This past time we came in to see the warriors vs lakers game and after a few drinks ended up getting the churro waffle. It was super good, very very sweet, I personally thought it could have had a bit more cinnamon but it wasn't overwhelming with the ice cream. Our waiter was super nice even though it seemed he was super super busy.

Ed H.

Yelp
Came here years ago and just came back twice on my recent trip. Barney's is a fairly reliable sports bar and grill right on the third street promenade. Has many TVs and we were able to catch a few games. One time I had the deli club sandwich with a side of chili and both the sandwich and the chili were tasty. Another time I had a chicken and cheese quesadilla with sides of beans and rice and quac. Very tasty meal. Service was fairly friendly but there was a lengthy wait for the sandwich and the chili side was lukewarm, it must have been sitting for quite awhile before the server brought it out.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Service here is terrible. We sat with empty plates and empty beers for over 30 minutes with no one approaching our table. Another table of two was seated right next to us and eventually walked out due to no one even going to take their drink order.
google avatar

Deepa N.

Yelp
Great place to chill with friends & family. Make sure to reserve a table as it gets crowded and the wait time may be long. Menu is extensive with all day breakfast, lunch & dinner. Food is super delicious and large portions......Tons of choices for drinks too. Great ambiance, vibe, good music & plenty of seating available both inside & out.

Lesly M.

Yelp
Chill place to plot your next adventure! Had an upstairs with games such as pool, air hockey, and basketball. Definitely will be visiting again.

Hanin J.

Yelp
I don't mean to be a downer but this place was just not it. The service.., sucked. The waitress kept leaving our party while we were ordering. Mind you once you ordered, you can't change your mind because they send the order in person by person. It took at least 20 minutes for the lady to finish taking our tables order due to her coming back and forth person by person instead of waiting for us to decide as a collective on what to get. The food came out sequentially instead of all together so by the time some people got their food the rest had already finished eating. On top of that, the food was very mid. The Ruben sandwich is one I would not recommend (it was so dry and stiff it cut the roof of my mouth) and the southern chicken salad was just fine (it came with one bell pepper on top I wished was cut instead of there for design).

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Good luck. Pasadena location is great. This location staff needs some retraining. After waiting over 30 minutes for a drink went to the bar to order. Within 2 minutes of getting back to my table was told I had to leave the table and go to the bar because this was a servers table. Extremely rude and unprofessional.

Yelp
I'm a local and stop into Barney's for the awesome bar seating, pool tables and karaoke. Today I was walking and got super dehydrated and went in to see if I could get a free water . A lovely lady by the name Brie gave me a huge TO GO water without any fuss. Great customer service! Thanks so much for caring!

Yelp
During our short visit to Santa Monica, we ended up going to Barney's twice. We were staying at a hotel a couple of blocks away. We had just returned from a UCLA BB game and were starving. We scoped out the area places that served up food and drinks. It was a rainy night, so we didn't want to walk too far. Unfortunately, we stopped at some pub and were shot down. They closed their kitchen early, but they directed us to Barney's. We found Barney's a short distance away. Despite being PACKED, we were seated immediately. Pretty cool décor. The menu was vast. So was their beer page. It appeared most of the beers were local, which was outstanding. Our server appeared immediately and she was great. She had a few large grouped tables near us, but she visited us often and had a wonderful attitude. Drinks came quickly, as did the food (my wife ordered sliders..which were quite large. I ordered a Reuben). The food was good. There weren't many options around and the weather wasn't too conducive to walking around. Barney's hit the spot. The next night, we had a long day. We went back to the hotel to rest and by the time we felt like moving to hunt down food...guess what, it was raining again. We had started to walk down to the Pier, but the rain started to intensify. We were soaked and no longer in the mood for anything nicer. So...guess what, we decided to go to Barney's again. Sunday night...once again packed. Still we were seated immediately. Again, a very attentive waiter. Once again, food hit the spot. My wife just wanted dessert and I ordered a burger. Can't go wrong with either and we were happy. This isn't anything fancy. It's a place w/ a very cool vibe. It does seem to be busy most times, which could turn people off...or create a better experience. The place has TV's all over w/ mainly sports on...but there was an awards show one night and news the other evening. The menu is huge and there's something for everyone. There is a full bar and a beer menu that goes on for days. How can you not like this place?? Great job!!

y and fries. No cheI've been going there for 30 yearso. The manager was rude,I returned a breakfast because it was cold and obviously microwaved.I asked him politely to send it. Back I'd just order a basic cheeseburger. What I got was literally bun, pattty. No lettuce, tomato cheese. I flagged him over and said what's this? He looked at me with a cockyy little grin and said "Thats what you ordered". I paid the bill, tipped the bartender $15 cash ,got that crappy food to go for my dog and left. I won't go there again until that little bastard gets fired. He has a napolianic complex and doesn't care about P+Q.
