The Best Resorts in the World: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Originally built as an Italianate villa, this off-the-beaten-path resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains now has a cluster of country cottages and is laid out to resemble an English country village, with ten acres of heirloom gardens. Cottages are beautifully and uniquely decorated, with claw-foot tubs and handpicked reproduction furnishings, and have porches with rocking chairs or swings. Rice House serves prime beef, fresh fish, and wild game in an 1854 farmhouse with bullet holes from the Civil War—the food is first-class, and it has a certain Barnsley flair to it. Activities include the awesome golf course, designed by Jim Fazio, and two 14-station clay shooting courses. Staff are fabulous and the environment lends itself to a true escape from the daily grind." - CNT Editors

My wife and I just returned from a 4-day stay at Barnsley Resort, and we couldn’t have picked a better place for some R&R. This was our first visit, and we stayed in one of the cottages cozy, charming, and well-appointed. From the rocking chairs on the front porch to the plush bed and comfortable living area, it felt like a home away from home. And thankfully, the A/C worked like a champ, crucial when it’s pushing 90+ degrees outside.||The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful, with something for everyone: horseback riding, fishing, clay shooting, golf, hiking trails, a peaceful meditation garden, and even the ruins of the original plantation home that add a unique historical element. We spent a good amount of time lounging by the pool, which is well-stocked with towels and offers food and drinks from the pool bar. You can also rent a cabana if you want some extra shade and comfort.||At night, the resort lights several fire pits where guests gather to wind down, s’mores and good conversation included.||The one downside is the dining options. The Woodlands is the only full-service restaurant on-site, and while the food is good, the prices are on the higher side so plan ahead and definitely make reservations. There’s also the Biergarten, a casual outdoor spot, but it was closed during our stay and had a private event the one night it was open.||The staff were all friendly and welcoming, and the vibe was a mix of families, couples, and older guests all enjoying the peaceful setting. Just a heads-up: the resort is a bit remote, so next time we’ll be sure to bring a few essentials with us.||All in all, Barnsley is a charming, relaxing spot with Southern hospitality and plenty to do—or not do, if that’s your preference.

Such a great layout. Just lacking attention to detail. Killed several huge spiders and roaches. Big wasp nest on front porch and the front door would not open. Did not have enough bedding for our family of 4, so had to ask and tip to get them. Was just overall underwhelmed for the money. Felt more like a summer camp than a resort. The resort has reached out. They were truly concerned and said they would review this and take actions to make sure it doesn't happen again.

We visited the Barnsley with my son, his wife and their infant son. I have to say that the resort is underwhelming. It is advertised as an exclusive luxury resort but it’s below the standard of other luxury resorts that we’ve vacationed in. The value for the money is not there. ||Pros: The grounds are beautiful. There are multiple activities for families with young kids. It seemed ideal for a wedding weekend. Service at the restaurant was professional to some degree. ||Con:s: There’s much to be desired with housecleaning. Our rooms were not cleaned at all while we were there. The cottage where my son and his family stayed was dusty and the bathroom floors didn’t seem clean. The worst was that they found a roach hovering by the sink on their last night. They had to quickly pack and cover all their suitcases to make sure they don’t take any of these bugs home with them. ||There were only 2 restaurants while we were there, with one serving food buffet-style. The food was so-so, nothing special with the menu or the presentation of the food.||Overall, the resort has potential. Management has their work cut out for them to make the resort match its description as advertised.

We had a wonderful time at Barnsley Resort. The grounds are beautiful and staff were very kind and welcoming. My kids had a so much fun riding bikes around, swimming at the pool, and participating in archery, shooting , and axe throwing. We can’t wait to go back!

The exceptional level of service was provided with every experience. Brent at the Biergarten, Olivia at the Woodlands restaurant on two different evenings and at the golf course, Taylor at the Woodlands and at the Inn. Two other excellent events: the Bourbon tasting with Jackson and the Wine/ruins tour with Karrie. Their focus on their customers experience was above and beyond! The experience each of them provided is the reason their names are top of mind. My family and I have stayed at many resorts around the country and abroad and the key at Barnsley is the staff that makes this amazing property and its experiences a joy for all ages. We will be back hopefully soon!

My stay at Barnsley Resort was a dream getaway that felt like stepping into a storybook. Nestled in the North Georgia countryside, this historic property offers a perfect blend of luxury and rustic charm. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm and attentive, and the grounds were absolutely stunning—lush gardens, wooded trails, and the romantic ruins of the original manor house. Whether horseback riding through scenic trails, canoeing on the lake, or unwinding with fireside cocktails, every moment felt curated yet effortless. The accommodations were cozy and refined, and the culinary experiences were exceptional. Perfect for a romantic escape, a stylish photoshoot, or a serene retreat with friends, Barnsley Resort is a hidden gem with heart, heritage, and hospitality.

It was a stop we made between SC and back to Indiana. We stumble on this via Google. Can’t wait to go back and visit again! The hotel check in reminded me of the old days and the customer service was fantastic too! The steakhouse was fantastic and the golf course was great experience. They had fire pits, corn hole games which I won three times. They even had a beverage truck to get a drink while enjoying outside! This hide away roast is a MUST!!!

Yelp
**Review Title: Beware of Unauthorized Charges!** I stayed at this establishment on May 30 and 31, and my experience was nothing short of a nightmare. Upon check-in, the front desk staff asked for a card to cover incidental charges, but instead, they ran my card for the full remaining balance of my stay, which I didn't even pay for--someone else covered that for business purposes. I reached out to Renee on June 13, and while she did refund my money, I was horrified to find that the very next day, I was charged again! They processed my credit card without my consent, which is completely unacceptable. This place clearly does not respect their guests' financial boundaries. If you value your hard-earned money and want to avoid unauthorized charges, I strongly advise against staying here. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere!

Yelp
Just a little over an hour North of our Atlanta home, John and I spent Valentine's weekend enjoying Barnsley Resort and each other. You feel so far away here from the city but are so close! Everything from the stunning Manor House Ruins and garden, tree-covered walkways, cute and cozy cottages, immersive historical tours, lovely dining options, golf, activities, and so much more, Barnsley Resort has something for everyone.   Driving in, you're greeted with a smile by the security guard at the gate! One-part welcome party, he sends you to the Inn at Barnsley to check in. The Inn has become the heart of the property since being completed in 2018. With gathering areas, warm wood, and beautiful English architecture, the Inn boasts 55 rooms. Downstairs in the lobby, join in on the 5pm whiskey tradition, or hang out near the fire pits. Also, don't miss lounging in the lobby seating area by the fire or the fun key wall behind check-in. On our weekend, we got to stay in one of the many cottages that dot the landscape around the town square. Walking through them is straight out of a Hallmark movie! Inside, you're welcomed with a large living space, wood burning fireplace, and sweeping hardwood floors. The bedroom is tucked away behind a pair of French doors with a large comfy king bed, large oval window, and entrance to your own private porch. Then, attached to the bedroom is the luxurious bathroom with pedestal sink, ornate claw foot tub, standing shower and overlooking the tub is a large oval window. We stayed in a smaller cottage, but they have them in all sizes for any family large or small. The first thing we did after we got settled in our room was the Wine, Cheese, and Love Stories historical tour where we explored the Barnsley Resort property. Here we literally learn everything there is to know about the property, all while enjoying Barnsley's very own Santa Clara Valley Estate wine paired with a local farm's cheeses!   We started back at the Inn at Barnsley Resort with Pimento Cheese and Santa Clara Valley Cab. We had a meet and greet with our tour guides and learned about the history of Barnsley, the new Inn building, and more. We find out that Prince Fugger bought the property in 1988 after many years of disrepair and turned it into what it is today, a resort destination, in the Southeast!    Our second stop is at the Rice House, which was moved from Savannah and brought to the property in 3 pieces. There we saw our guide Sabre off the top of Barnsley's grand Cuvée Brut sparkling wine and got paired with a warm brie fondue and dark chocolate fondue. This is the best pairing!   Our third stop was the breathtaking Manor House Ruins! It is a must-see garden and ruins right in the middle of the property! Godfrey Barnsley brought his wife and children to the property in 1840s and started work on their lavish mansion. Julia, his wife, passed before it was completed. Work stopped. But he had a dream of her in the garden telling him to finish it for her. So, he did, it is his love letter to her. Then, in 1906 a tornado took off the roof and back wall and the family moved into the kitchen house, and it was never repaired. There we sampled the Monterey Chardonnay and had Tomme cheese, nuts, and fruit.   Our final spot was in the kitchen house where we saw the Barnsley decedents washer, wood stove, and where we heard the tale of Preston Saylor (KO Dugan), a prize fighter who later shot his brother and killed him. They have memorialized and enclosed the spot where the blood stain is to this day. There we enjoyed the Santa Clara Valley Meritage merlot and hard cheese spread with fruit!  Other places you can explore and enjoy activities are the central beer garden where the staff says "the eternal flame" of the property is, the firepit! They are looking to expand and renovate it in the coming years. Attached to the Rice house is a wedding, concert, and large venue for any occassion. If you're a golfer, they have a large 18 round golf course with a lake! Like out of the box adventures? They have everything from archery to horseback riding to skeet shooting. There is really something fun to do around every corner. The staff is amazing, knowledgeable, and wait on you hand and foot!

Yelp
This is the perfect getaway and extremely romantic. We went for the weekend and got the romance package, as we arrived into our room the bed had a heart shape with roses along with a bottle of champagne. We were given credit in which we got a couples massage, gun shooting and horseback riding! They have many activities on the resort and the staff is extremely welcoming and friendly! The only downside was we were told something different about the credit and got charged $456 for the massage, the staff realized their mistake and luckily granted us what we were initially told. (I will admit the massage was mediocre for the price.... in my person opinion I wouldn't really recommend doing it but the spa itself is lovely) We visited woodlands grill for lunch and dinner and were extremely surprised with how tasty the food was! 10/10 recommend eating there at least once and visiting the beer garden for additional food options because the menu for the most part is the same at the restaurant and it is the only restaurant on the resort. The beignets were soooooo good, everyone needs to try this. I also recommend getting dinner earlier rather than later because they do run out of certain foods towards the end of the night. It's pricey in the fact that you have to pay for every little thing. (a small water bottle is $3.00) Highly recommend for families or couples just wanting a weekend getaway! For families with children there are lots of activities to keep them occupied such as corn hole, smores outside every night and bike riding that you can rent! I will suggest booking the different excursions in advance because it does get booked very quickly and certain excursions (axe throwing, archery and horseback riding is only available till 3pm at least that's what we were told. Regardless, I will definitely be back one day!

Yelp
What a gorgeous getaway! Just a quick drive to Adairsville, and before I knew it, I was in a country paradise. The grounds are absolutely stunning and super quaint. Everything is walkable on the property, but there are golf carts for rent if needed. You can also drive around if preferred, but really not necessary. We did encounter a ton of rain during our weekend stay which wasn't ideal, but we still made the most of our time in the Fugger Cabin which has a ton of cool history (where a Prince used to stay), and is quite secluded towards the back of the resort and grounds. There are fire pits all across the property and the grounds crew will come by during the evening and start the fires and provide delicious smores kits, but we were lucky enough to have our own private fire pit area at the cabin. We also overlooked the lake and even got to kayak across! Some of our family went shooting which is one of the other amenities offered, but I opted for a visit to the spa which did not disappoint. Quite small, but I had the most incredible massage and enjoyed the whole experience (including the spa showers and complimentary Forte tea). I will definitely be back for another visit and weekend stay in the future!

Yelp
Great hospitality, good food options. Beer garten is now my favorite place to hang out when open. Just a really unique and wonderful place to enjoy time with family or friends.

Yelp
I came here for a work retreat. My whole division and its leadership attended an event here for a few days where we participated in meals, team building, future planning, and connection building. The resort is a beautiful location... a bit of a drive away, but truly an oasis out in the country. They have nice looking cabins/houses that are all set up almost like a movie scene down the Main Street. We did not stay in one of those though... we stayed in the main building which is very much like a hotel. Rooms are big, set up well and are well kept. The staff are exceedingly nice and helpful. They really go out of their way to see that your stay is exceptional. There is a golf course, fishing, horse back riding, ax throwing, archery, gardens, shooting, and more. In the middle of the location they have a beer garden that has TVs for sports however when we were here it was not open accept for only one of the days. There are countless fire pits all over the property all stocked with wood daily and ready to go. Burn as you desire. They also have a bar that plays sports as well, but does close on the early side if you're looking to stay out late. They offer food for all the major meals of the day either casual or more fine dinning types. The food is ok... some of it good and some of it not passable but there was always something edible. My overall time here was pleasant. I could see this place as a wedding venue, a reunion type place and the like, but as a work retreat I felt it was lacking a bit. Nothing major... we just didn't have the place to gather as a group inside together and bond like other locations before. It was a good time in a beautiful location so believe me... the time was not lost for sure.

Yelp
I attended a work event at Barnsley Resort. The portion I joined included a resort-catered, buffet-style lunch at the Georgian Hall, followed by presentations in one of the meeting rooms. For decades, I heard about this place from coworkers. Several still refer to it by its old name, "Barnsley Gardens." This is a popular local getaway for both work and pleasure. It's nice. I enjoyed my time here. Barnsley is located in Northwest Georgia, southwest of Adairsville proper, in Bartow County. From Atlanta, it's about a 1.25 to 1.5-hour drive via I-75 north in light traffic. It's "out in the middle of nowhere" (we passed a pig farm nearby on the way in), but that's part of the appeal. You don't have to drive that far from the city to get to this secluded and quaint, all-inclusive, top-tier resort. It's a small, well-manicured village hidden away. The resort has several activities and features including trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, clay pigeon shooting, an 18-hole golf course, the former namesake gardens, restaurants, a swimming pool, and a spa. The golf course was designed by Jim Fazio, brother of the more-famous course architect Tom Fazio. It looked pretty nice on our drive in. Definitely a nicer resort course. I'd like to play it some day. The resort is also just nice to walk around. Compared to day-to-day life in metro Atlanta, the serene environment here is a welcome and refreshing change of pace. Our lunch consisted of salad, soup, and sandwiches + dessert and coffee. Good-quality food and great service. The staff was attentive and everyone that I interacted with was polite and kind. This included the folks at the Beer Garden, where my coworkers and I hung out a bit. I also visited the cottages where some of my coworkers were staying. Those were nice as well. The cottages seemed like they had everything but kitchens. The cottage area was scenic with long, lush-green lawns and multiple firepits. The overall atmosphere was relaxing. In addition to the cottages, there is an inn. My wife briefly considered Barnsley for our wedding (we went with the Atlanta History Center). If I recall correctly, I heard that one of the children of the Delta CEO had their wedding here during the pandemic. Also, I believe the Wellstar executives were meeting here during the same time as when I visited. That should give you an idea as to the quality of Barnsley Resort.

Yelp
Recently stayed for Business Event. The venue was breathtaking. The layout and charm of the resort stood out for me. From the traditional design to the Manor House Ruins. It was excellent! The food and service top notch. The Event Manager , Annie Zebrowski, was also top notch. Very friendly and attentive. Even down to securing some last minute post it notes! Would highly recommend Barnsley and look forward to returning.

Yelp
I came here for a birthday to take part in activities and eat for the day. I thought Barnsley would be this massive beautiful garden with scenic cabins but that isn't what I got. The gardens/ ruins are the size of a nice style home. I was picturing the ruins of a castle and the garden from Alice in wonderland. I had my hopes up too high. The golf carts are happy to take you from the lobby to anywhere on the property. The ride comes with a knowledgeable driver that can tell you the history of the property. Or you could rent your own golf carts and bikes and travel around. I wouldn't recommend the archery for adults. Each bow and arrow are low quality metal, wood and foam. The targets are paper laid over hay bells. Great for kids. The horses were beautiful, but I didn't ride, it was too hot. Brunch at the Woodall Grill was amazing, and had a nice view over the water. Parking was easy. I don't think I'll be back but this place would make a good group trip for golfers, fisherman and gun enthusiasts. Not a romantic getaway. If you're looking for romance try the Montaluce winery or stay at the Chateau Elan.

Yelp
Barnsley Resort features some of the most peaceful, bucolic grounds within an hour's drive from Atlanta. The resort might show its age in a few places - such as the vibe and decor of the units within the Inn - but everything is kept clean and extremely well-maintained. We had no complaints about our room, which had a mini fridge, a small coffee maker, two complimentary bottles of water, and - most importantly for me - a squeaky clean bathroom. In the lobby area, there would also be water, coffee, hot tea, and s'more-making materials in the evenings (to be used in the open campfires outside). The folks at the front desk were incredibly polite and efficient, making for a seamless check-in and departure process. For a resort, the availability of eateries and activities are a little sparse, especially if you're not a golfer (the greens take up the majority of the grounds). Our stay included an activity credit, which we applied for an axe-throwing venture. We were excited to try it since it was our first time, but the young women who were in charge stood back to chat for most of the time. I unfortunately never got the hang of it, and I was somewhat disappointed that neither of them felt compelled to step away from their conversation to offer tips or pointers. That being said, we enjoyed meeting all the animals at the nearby farm (PLEASE visit the baby goats and pony - they were the most charming part of this farm). There's an automatic $40 resort fee appended to all stays, which seems to cover the complimentary beverages, s'mores, and Wifi, but nearly all other activities require an extra charge (except for the bike rentals, which is free for up to two hours). Eating options might also be a little slim, depending on when you come. Our weekday visit meant the Woodlands Grill and the Biergarten were our only dining options (there's a third eatery, but it was closed for the season). There's little else in the area, which means a stay here means you'll have to make do with the menus and associated prices of each. Had I known we had such few options, I would have done a little more food research before coming (or packed snacks and foodstuffs a little more liberally). All that said, we enjoyed all the long walks and the friendly service all around. Barnsley is apparently a hotspot on weekends and especially for weddings, so plan your visits accordingly!

Lisa T.

Yelp
Beautiful property with lots of fun outdoor activities available. We enjoyed our visit. The historic gardens and ruins are worth exploring, especially with all the spring trees and flowers in bloom. The ATV's were pricey, but a great time. The shooting facility was excellent. Golf course was nice but was too crowded and we had to wait so long between holes, we quit after 9 holes. I felt nickled and dimed with each activity as you are charged a service fee and credit card processing fee. I think the food could most definitely be improved - the offerings were slim, quality and service was sub-par, especially for the price. We were here for a week. Eating at the Woodland Grill every day got boring as the options didn't change and there was not enough variety. I felt that the food was overpriced for what you received. Though not busy, service was not attentive, and they add on 20% gratuity. I didn't realize this and added another 25% tip. If I am charged $50 for a filet and then charged for the bread and each side. I think charging for bread is unnecessary. I will pay $100 for a steak, bread and couple of sides and non alcoholic drink, but the food should be topnotch in addition to the service and it was not. Disappointing. The beer garden had just opened - brisket was dry and overcooked, wings had way too much liquid smoke, pork BBQ was just okay. No sides available. It is a nice resort and certainly worth visiting...

Yelp
It's clean, convenient but little outdated. Fresh air is the part. Slightly pricy for what's offered. Good for weddings and golf outings.

Yelp
I have been traveling and staying at Barnsley Gardens since it opened in 1999/2000. Literally dozens of times, to include family events, scheduled corporate retreats for my company on several occasions, visited the shooting grounds and played countless rounds of golf and dinner reservations. Barnsley has always provided first class service and the amenities are 5 star. Unfortunately, I scheduled a trip in late December 2024 and had to cancel due to sickness. Because I was not within their 14 day cancellation policy, I was charged $288 of a $399 stay. the resort was not at capacity and had rooms freely available. I called to discuss the charge and was told I would be called back. After a week with no call, I called back to speak with "Terra", the on site manager. She informed me that Barnsley was unwilling to give any kind of consideration. Most disappointing and short-sighted given my travel history with the resort. I have taken my last trip to Barnsley and am sorely disappointed in their policy and diminished culture of customer service.

Yelp
Great place close to Atlanta with one huge negative ... the food. We had a really fun 2 night stay in the Adelaide Cottage. We filled our time with activities ... horseback riding, archery, axe throwing, sporting clays, disc golf, corn hole, and making s'mores at the fire pit. The Woodlands Grill was our only food option. Of our 4 meals the first night, only my husband's Caesar salad with chicken was good. The rib eye (huge fatty section), beef short ribs, and crab cakes (blah) were not good. Even the sides were bad and mostly flavorless (the fries we ok though). We had breakfasts delivered to the cottage. We learned after the first morning to stick with the breakfast sandwich. We played it safe and got salads for the one lunch we had. The salads and dressings were good, although the chicken was extremely dry. There are no dining options nearby, so we decided to drive 25 minutes to Rome for dinner our second night. Las Palmas, a casual Mexican place, was so much better than Woodlands Grill and inexpensive to boot. We didn't expect fine dining on the property but did expect decent food given the high prices. We'd give the overall property, activities, and service a 5; we'd give the food a 1. The cottage could use a refresh but was nice enough. It was great having a pretty, quiet place so close to Atlanta with a variety of activities to choose from. It was expensive which we obviously knew. Since there are no dining options nearby, we would not go back given the current food situation. Sad because it could be an awesome place for a short stay.

Yelp
Spent the weekend here celebrating my wife's birthday. Came in late and was treated great. This place is a jewel. Great experience, great food, great people.

Yelp
Mixed emotions! The good: the resort is so beautiful. Peaceful. Well maintained, for the most part. The cottages are very comfortable. It feels like summer camp and a village combined. Food at the Woodlands Grill is yummy. The staff is very friendly & helpful, and not intrusive. The event spaces are so pretty. The bad: during the week, you have only 1 food option for all your meals, and it gets old after meal #2, as it's a limited/small menu. It's too far out for Uber eats to be an option, and there's very little around without driving for a bit. No room service either. More food options at all times would make this so much better! They also automatically make you tip 20% for anything & everything, even if the service sucks- that's a turn off. The activities are great, but it felt like they weren't all operating. They could easily add more activity options that would make us want to stay longer & book more. Our cottage had a great claw foot tub but not nearly enough hot water to enjoy it without trying to add a little more every few minutes, which wasn't relaxing. Some of the lawn games were broken/should be replaced. Our bedroom tv randomly kept turning itself on during the night - not cool! Overall, beautiful spot, but without less food options & maybe some added activities, I don't recommend more than a night or two there, unless you just want to walk outside, read, maybe golf? (We don't golf so I can't speak to that)...and in terms of value, it's pretty pricey, FYI! Not a great deal. Wanted to go to the spa but the treatment prices are beyond crazy, even for me, and I love a nice spa experience! Also be aware when hiking - it's not a super crowded place so some of the trails aren't used daily & there can be lots of spider webs. Take a stick!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our stay at the Barnsley Resort Inn. The room was great (except for dripping we heard in the closet as there was a leak from the roof, but that's so unfortunate for them). We still thought the room was nice. Someone told us the Inn was built about 4 yrs ago, so maybe that's why it looks so good. We loved the lavendar mint body wash, shampoo, & conditioner! I signed up for the UTV's and it was almost $500 for 2 adults after taxes and fees, but Jesse was so nice and it was a great experience (especially with the rain puddles so good timing rain!). We signed up for the Air Rifles too, which was going to be $200 but it was raining and was cancelled. We weren't upset since we'll get a refund and we were able to lay down longer before checkout! We went to the Easter weekend Fish Fry, which costed $160 and I found out I don't like fried flounder (too dense to me). The fried chicken had a hot sauce marinade, but I still wanted more flavor in the chicken. I don't like their potato salad but I liked the mini dessert thing with the crust, fruit, and cool whip. I didn't like they charged us for sodas after we paid so much and the music was country, so I probably won't sign up for this one again, just because it's so expensive. The bingo was fun. We won, but the good prizes were taken beforehand (the body wash! and a soft blanket!). We had the smoked chicken wings from the Beer Garden, which were nicely smoked, but not the best for us. The gardens and ruins were nice to walk and look at. K liked the bourbon but too strong for me! It's only 5-5:15pm, which they should say in their flyer so people don't miss it. The chocolate chip cookies are so soft and delicious, if you can catch them in the lobby! Overall, the peacefulness of this resort and the small town feel with the cottages along the walkway was so nice, I definitely would recommend to everyone I know!

Yelp
I'm going to go middle of the road on this one as we didn't get to experience all that Barnsley has to offer. We came here for a corporate meeting event and stayed 2 nights. Along with the stay they provided food and basically took care of all of our needs while we were there. Some of the good things. Rooms were large and spacious. Very comfortable, if you're in the mood for it there is even a large tub if you want to take a soak. Shouldn't have any concerns about loud neighbors as it really isn't what this environment seems to be about. Food that they provided was good, no complaints. Came out fresh and cooked as requested. Staff interactions were friendly, but kind of few and far between. The resort itself looked to be well maintained and you drive through the gold course area when you arrive, so it's a nice drive in when you get here. All in all it's nice, but it comes at a pretty hefty price point, which is also part of the reason for a little bit of a deduct.

Yelp
I loved our visit to The Barnsley so much!! Our kids loved it and it made for a wonderful family getaway! I shared more details in a blog post, but the service was top notch! The property itself was gorgeous and our experiences with each activity and amenity offered was excellent! We can't wait to return for another visit soon! There's something for everyone at the Barnsley, from hiking and fishing, to an amazing golf course, spa, beautiful pool and wonderful dining options, it's a beautiful hidden gem near the Blue Ridge Mountains! Our boy's favorite, fishing and visiting the horses at the farm! More on our new favorite family getaway at Proseandcompany.blogspot.com

Yelp
What a beautiful resort! The resort offers a magnificent golf course. The spa and pool areas are delightful. The Inn is a has a very quaint environment. There are several cottages that range from one bedroom up to seven bedrooms (we stayed on a one bedroom cottage, very spacious). There are 3 dining facilities on site. Out favorite was the Rice House. We didn't get to experience all the resort had to offer. You won't be disappointed if you choose to stay here.

Yelp
I really enjoyed relaxing here. It's about 4 hours from Nashville but once we got on the property it felt like a drive well spent. In one overnight stay we had fun at the pool overlooking the golf course, the room at the inn, the barn, horseback riding, clay shooting, and bumping around on the cruiser bikes. Shout outs to Leanne (Outpost), Ashleigh (pool), Randy (sporting clay instructor), Ty (inn staff), and Lindsay (Woodlands Grill) for making us feel welcome. Almost everyone was friendly but being a brown person going deep into the North Georgia terrain, I wasn't sure what our reception would be. There was no need to be concerned.

Yelp
This was one if the most breath taking locations I've ever witnessed. The seclusion of the resort was well worth the hidden gem. The sprawling fields, the scenic trails, the golf course, and the multiple outdoor lounging spots with fire pits for toasted marshmallows. The cottages are also well put together with all the luxurious necessities to make your private getaway the most relaxing. We had horseback riding, spa, fishing, ax throwing, Clay shooting, bullseye, and UTV rides.

Yelp
We just got back from our stay at Barnsley Resort and it was underwhelming to say the least. The cottage we stayed in had a bathroom that should have been remodeled 10 years ago. The shower had no water pressure and overall just dirty looking. There was no proactive housekeeping communication, and the trash can was something you would see under your desk at work. We also had to empty our own trash 3x per day since we had 5 people in the cottage. A tiny little sink also made it difficult to eat anything in the cottage. We never saw housekeeping the entire time we were there. The pool was nice looking from a view, but the water was dirty with bugs floating all along the sides. The bar area only had one person working with no one walking around to take any orders, so you had to go up and order your own food and drinks. Not a major deal breaker but for the price to stay there it should be something standard. The Woodlands Grille was the only place to eat. The food was just ok and overpriced. I had a filet that was bland and tasted like it was left out for 2 days. Service was ok. The best meal we had was offsite at a Mexican restaurant. There were no games out. It rained for about 12 hours overnight and I took my young son to play Cornhole on the green just as the sun came out. As soon as we started to play, a worker took them away explaining that they wanted to keep them from getting wet. It was dry for the next 24 hours and they never came back. My son was so confused and disappointed by this and said why do they not keep them out to dry. When we asked a worker about getting a fire started that night, he said we needed to talk to the Outpost. When asked how we contact them he did not know. The golf course was nice and well kept. But there are plenty of golf courses in Georgia just as nice. Barnsley Resort needs an upgrade and to have additional staff if we would consider staying again.

Yelp
I've stayed at Barnsley Resort three times over a nine year period. The first time was great, the second time was for a work function, so almost all of our time was in pre-planned activities, so everything seemed fine. This last time made me wonder if either they were under new management/ownership, or if they just grew too fast. My wife requested early check-in, and we reiterated this at the front desk. We were told they would text us when our room was ready (check-in is at 3, and my wife and son had an activity at 3 for which they wished to change their clothes). We never got a text, so after dropping them off for their activity, I went to the check-in at 3pm. The young lady said "let me see if your room is ready". I told her it should be since it is now the regular check-in time. Not a big deal, but not impressive. We had asked where my wife and son needed to be for their activity. She told us to go to the Outpost, the building with the green roof next to the old check-in building. This was wrong. They needed to be at the shooting school, which is ten to fifteen minutes away. I asked if they sold cigars anywhere on the property. She and another staff member told me they did not. While sitting at the bar later that night, I noticed the bartender lead another guest to a cabinet in the corner. I went over to investigate and low and behold, it was full of cigars that were for sale. They even had a cigar cutter. The worst part was that it wasn't until the next day at breakfast that I noticed the note at the bottom of the check, which was obscured by the little slot in which they put the check, that a 20% gratuity had already been added. So we had been tipping on a total which already included a 20% tip, so we were tipping on a tip (e.g. on a $100 bill, we were tipping $40-$45. And the service really did not merit even a 20% tip. We were not told at the front desk about the tip being automatically added, and no bartender or waitperson pointed this out either. It gives the impressions of grift and greed, rather than a quality property. Under staffed and very poor response times. The food and beverage prices reflect the reality that one is a captive audience in the middle of nowhere, rather than the quality of the products and service. I will not be back. Looking forward to our stay, I had told a group of friends how great our previous experience was. I have since tracked each person down to correct what I had told them.

Yelp
I went to celebrate a birthday and wanted to relax for a couple days. This served that purpose. About an hour outside of Atlanta. You can be away and close to the action when you're ready for that. I thought the staff was five stars. Everyone was friendly and warm. The grounds are well maintained. To fully take advantage of the resort, I think the ideal time to go is spring and fall. When the grounds, golf course, etc green up, I bet it's pretty. Food was a three. Up and down. One meal is great another would be so/so. Thought the selection of whiskey's were great at the bar. I did clay shooting while there and this place was perfect for that. Great place to breathe, take in some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors with a sense of calm and tranquility. I don't need to visit again, b/c I don't live in the area, but if you're nearby and need a break, this is gold. P.S. They should offer more amenities in the room to welcome guests. Selection of teas, hot chocolate, warm cookies or something. After all, it is home away from home.

Yelp
I've worked in the restaurant i distrusted and waiting 2 hours for dinner without explanation is unacceptable. The waitress could not work with us and walked away. There were other customers who were experiencing the same. The food was good but not exceptional. I don't recommend the restaurant based on their reputation

Yelp
Barnsley Resort is phenomenal. First class treatment and amenities, beautiful grounds, etc. I really enjoyed the resort, it was an experience unlike many other typical weekend getaway resorts of a similar ilk. Everything about it is first rate. The location is very secluded, I.E. off the beaten path. If anything, it's kinda difficult to locate and that can be a bit frustrating when trying to locate it, but it's a very private resort and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you really need a break from the drama of city life or the workweek, take a long weekend getaway out here and smell the roses or enjoy the grounds. It's a good way to recharge the batteries! The food is great, the spa is amazing and the architecture of the old ruins and the gorgeous gardens all make it worth the price tag. Plus, the service and rooms are all excellent and there's plenty to do enjoy when it comes to amenities, such as golf and nature tours, to occupy your time. It's a bit pricey, but largely worth it. I call it a splurge!

Yelp
We loved this resort! We brought our 9yo son here for a family getaway. There was so much to do. We could have spent a week here and still not experienced everything. Our son loved the archery and air rifle shooting lessons. The instructors were great. The grounds are beautifully maintained. There's little surprises everywhere, like a bamboo meditation garden, disc golf and mini ponies. Reserve your experiences early because they do book up. The wood-burning fireplaces and fire pits outside added an extra layer of coziness and familiarity to the elegance of the property. The food was amazing. We loved breakfast and lunch at the grill. They were super accommodating with requests from our picky eater. The outdoor Beer garden was great too for grabbing a drink and delicious BBQ. All of the staff were welcoming and friendly. I guess this is that "southern hospitality" we've heard about (we're from California). It felt very genuine and refreshing. It was a little chilly in January. We'll definitely be back in the spring or fall. This is a truly special and unique place.

Yelp
Coming here gives a cornucopia of fitness activities and leisure moments. Our itinerary has a hybrid of both, including clay shooting, a massage, and fine dining. We find hammocks sprinkled around the gardens giving us time to take in the peaceful quiet of nature and occasionally watch horses on their trail rides. We love our stay-cations there to get away. Customer service makes us feel like honored guests, and fellow guests hold up their end with their curtsey so everyone can enjoy themselves.

Yelp
Golf course management is not accommodating to medical conditions. Quite frankly, rather rude. I personally would consider other options.

Yelp
If you like country living you will love this place. The cabins are perfect for a quiet get away. I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful resort while at a 2 day company workshop. The staff was amazing! Very friendly and warm staff. The food was great with many selections to choose from. The beds are soft and plush. I would definitely recommend for company or family gatherings.

Yelp
Olivia at the woodlands grill was the best waitress! so accommodating and sweet when the place was packed- we loved her and she gave us the best service!

Yelp
Acres of rich history with modernized facilities and amenities. Clay shooting, Spa, Golfing and probably much more. Beautiful cottage suites and gorgeous suites in the main building. Great for business meetings with many Georgian styles conference room. Fire pit everywhere to keep you warm or toast some marshmallow for your s'mores. I felt the vibe of the Gone with the Winds era with modern comfort. A pleasant surprise. Beautiful decorations during Christmas.

Yelp
The new owners, the Inn and attention to detail bring Barnsley Gardens deservedly into the fine company of world class resorts. Staff training and guest expectations are superbly managed and executed to the best of standards. Bravo! What was always a gem of North Georgia is now a world class hotel, resort and experience. 20% is still added to every dining option - this could be seen as a positive when service is wonderfully delivered - no need to calculate a base tip. Frankly, while some find the ruins of the old house charming, I see a beautiful Italianate Andrew Jackson Downing home begging to be restored to her splendor as the prize place to stay, assuming the ghosts agree:)

Yelp
Beautiful grounds, well landscaped. Great walking areas. Playground for the little one. Lodging accommodations were superb. All staff were friendly and very helpful. Walter provided a great tour in his golf cart-Thanks. Tim helped us settle in and briefed us on all amenities of our cottage-Thanks. Food at the Woodland Grill was very flavorful. Our server was very professional and friendly. Appreciate service like that. Great Stay!!

Yelp
Let me start off my review by saying this: GO EXPERIENCE BARNSLEY RESORT FOR YOURSELF! I would give this review more than 5 stars if possible. A true gem and conveniently located about an hour and a half from Atlanta. The staff was on par with even the finest 5 star hotels/resorts. The actives are plentiful - kayaking, canoeing, sporting clay - if that's not your thing you can request a massage in the privacy of your suite. A highlight of our trip was sporting clay. Jason, our guide, was excellent; my boyfriend and I will be returning for instructional classes. Did I mention Barnsley loves their four legged guests as much as their two legged guests? One of the most pet friendly spots to vacation and enjoy some R&R. We enjoyed happy hour for our two furry nug bugs, Momo and Cowboy, our first afternoon there. The dogs were showered with treats and dog toys while the humans were showered with wine and hors d'oeuvres. We ended our first night with a drink at the Beer Garden and a lovely dinner on the front porch of The Woodland Grille (where our dogs were also welcomed to dine with us). The overall experience even won my boyfriend over and we have planned our next visit to Barnsley in a couple months!

Yelp
What a fun getaway! Barnsley Gardens exemplifies southern hospitality. You are greeted with a friendly smile from the second you pull through the gate to check in. Our cabin exceeded my expectations, it was clean, had a real fireplace, sitting area, 3 decks, a kitchenette and an old time claw tub. The amenities are fantastic and the bedding and bed were also great. The leaves were starting to change so it was a great time to visit. We went to the bier garten for afternoon beer, The Rice House for dinner and The Woodland Grill for cocktails and breakfast. They have small outdoor fire pits all around the property with adirondack chairs. We can't wait to return!

Yelp
Nestled in the bushes of Adairsville, GA is the Spectacular Barnsley Resort. I absolutely fell in love with this place. If you're looking for a breathtaking and or relaxing experience this is the place to be. I was in a wedding so I was too busy to enjoy the facility. I was Amazed by the Bathroom and absolutely love the bathtub. We stayed on the cabin and loved the fact that we could access the other rooms were adjoining. They had horseback riding, fishing and other activities and the were fire pits and they game s'mores pack. Food is delicious but Pricy. I will definitely have to come back.

Yelp
Amazing, beautiful location with lots of options for activities for both adults and children. Great service at the Woodlands Grill and the Beer Gardens. Take advantage of their special activities. Easter is one of our favorite times to visit! They do an amazing brunch, the Fish fry on Friday was fabulous, Easter brunch and egg hunt! A hidden gem in North Ga!

Yelp
Enchanting and top notch. Friendly employees , The room I had was new.. five star feeling for a great price. Bonfires set up and ready to go all around the property can't imagine a better wedding spot or weekend getaway. Spa had a steam room GREAT massage and pool .

Yelp
I was last at Barnsley in 2017, and have no significant changes on the resort part of the facility; I still give i five stars. I was disappointed in the sporting clay facility, not only has it not been improved it has regressed. You can now only get a NSCA Level I instructor on weekends. Other than a bigger port-a-cabin for an office, there are still no amenities, not even a vending machine for cold drinks. The people who worked at Spring Bank are lovely, and we very much enjoyed Reed, our trapper. But it puzzles me why Barnsley is not willing to put some money into Spring Bank to have a first class sporting clay facility for its first class resort. My first trip to Barnsley was for a Garden & Gun shoot in 2017, and there is another G&G shoot there this fall. I'll not be going as the facilities at Spring Bank are not near worth the cost.

Yelp
What happens at the office holiday party stays at the office holiday party... My sister's generous employer paid for his entire staff to eat dinner, get wasted and spend the night in a cottage at Barnsley Gardens for their holiday party this year. And I got to be her date. Our sage-green cottage contained four private bedrooms and adjoining bathrooms. And, since we knew all our fellow cottage-goers, the building's common area was available for our enjoyment, too. Our bedroom contained a king-sized bed with a sitting area and a fireplace that burned all night while I drooled on my paisley pillow. The bathing room contained a claw-footed tub, sink and shower; and a separate door enclosed a potty and second sink. (This is a wonderful solution for any co-habitating couple; waiting to eliminate while your honey hogs the shower is the worst.) The pre-party occurred at the Big Chief's cottage, where he happily mixed Old Fashioneds along with dozens of other libations. Immediately upon his request, a staff member delivered a plate of sliced oranges to dip into the O.F.s. For buffet food, dinner was exceptional, stand-outs including the salmon with dill, beef stroganoff and tomato/red onion salad. Din-din took place in the Pavilion with a couple other office parties. While those people approached the bar with a single drink token, we guzzled cocktails all night courtesy of our wristbands. I fell asleep in the cottage before the after-party, waking up fully rested and abdominally able to order breakfast via room service. The Crab Cake Benedict absorbed any remaining Jack in my system. I didn't care for the coffee, most likely because soymilk wasn't available to dilute it. I could go on and on about the property's other attractions: the Ruins, the Rice House, horseback riding, golf... But I'll close by describing the 21-year-old child who relentlessly hit on me with the Arm on the Wall Move. "Let's dance," he suggested after trapping me in a corner. "I do have a boyfriend," I eventually said. "Oh yeah? That's not what I was told. Well I have a GIRLFRIEND." "Cool, how long have y'all been dating?" "Two weeks," he swelled his chest.

Yelp
A little piece of heaven lies just 60 miles north of Atlanta: Barnsley Gardens. It's in a remote location, so follow the signs closely and you'll get there without a problem. Everything about Barnsley Gardens is just fantastic; it's impossibly charming and romantic. Everyone is so warm and welcoming, and chances are good that you'll run into the in-house Fairy Godmother while you're there, who is positively wonderful. Woodlands Grill is such a treat this time of year- from the warm fireplace to the beautiful holiday decorations, you'll feel right at home. I came here with my family after a day of shopping at the Calhoun Premium Outlets. I had the tenderloin tips alfredo ($12.95), which was made with mushrooms, shallots, garlic and a light alfredo sauce with tortellini. I'm not a huge alredo lover, but this dish was full of flavor and perfectly comforting, without being too rich. I would also recommend the chicken pot pie (in puff pastry), the grilled salmon BLT (my parents' favorite) and the General salad, which is served with romaine, grilled chicken, berries, almonds, haricot verts, etc. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and if you want to dine "lighter," then ask for the pub menu (which is essentially the lunch menu) at dinner. Woodlands Grill would be a great place for a romantic date, dinner with your family, or a post-spa treat with your girlfriends. The property is gorgeous and full of history, so if you can, take the time to explore the ruins, museum, and gardens. If you want something more relaxing, then get a drink and cuddle up next to the fire. And if you need help planning a special occasion, be sure to contact the Fairy Godmother, Denise.

Yelp
My husband and I spent 4 days here and it was everything we dreamed! It was a gift for our wedding anniversary from my father. I wanted to come here as soon as we moved to Georgia and the experience completely exceeded my expectations. Grounds are gorgeous, our cabin was adorable, the food was excellent, and impeccable service. If you dine at the Woodlands Grill, do yourself a favor and ask for Kaitlin to serve you. You won't be disappointed! Thank you to everyone at the Barnsley Resort for making our anniversary so special. We'll be back!

Yelp
We stayed for one night as part of a retreat. We had dinner in the ruins with passed appetizer, followed by seated dinner under the tent at the back. Then we talked at the Beer Gardens until the next day. The atmosphere is charming. The story of how it ended up where it is today is entertaining - a Brit who married a woman from Savannah with TB bought the farm and built the Italianate house in the mountains for the cooler, less humid weather for her house prior to the Civil War. When Sherman came through, he burned some of the farmlands, but not the house once he realized the owner was a British citizen. The family owned it until the 1940s, when it was sold at auction. In the late 90s, it was purchased by a German prince, who restored the gardens and manor house. In 2004 it was purchased by a GT grad, and has continued to grow into the lovely resort that it is today. The "room" was cozy in decor, with wet bar, corkscrew, water bottles, and fresh magazines. I say "room" because it included a bedroom, living room, and bathroom with detached toilet. There was also a separate porch accessible only from the bedroom. The toiletries were all Lavender Mint from the spa, including big bottles in the enclosed shower. I wish I could've spent more time! Breakfast at the Pavilion was amazingly good - eggs, grits, fresh salsa were all exactly what you'd want. Eggs were fluffy and rich in flavor and color, grits were gritty, and salsa was chunky and fresh.

Yelp
Wow what a breathe taking resort and the food and service were out of this world. Brian was our server at the bar and all the history and knowledge he had was impressive, it's hard to find that expertise and passion for a place from servers / bartenders. The fried lobster I still think of and even the really fresh hummus. Ok I'm craving it again. This place rocks and so does Brian at the bar.

Yelp
Every December, our family of 5 spend an evening together. It's usually Brian Setzer Christmas concert and dinner, but he canceled. After much research, we decided on Barnsley Resort, dinner and lights. We ate at Woodlands Grill. We started with cocktails, then lobster bisque, then 4 got burgers, 1 got scallops. Service was slow and she did not check on us much. We had to ask for water refills and bread. When asked for bar cocktail menu, we were told there wasn't one. The next server said they did have one. Drinks were excellent ($14). Everyone agreed the burgers were very good. The scallops were just ok, not sure they were cooked through. The biggest issue was food was not hot. Bisque and scallops only lukewarm. As we left, I asked for hot chocolate to-go. It was complementary. How nice. Now on to the lights. They were ok. Not much to them, small display. We guessed 25% were not on. They had maze of shrubs, which would have been cool if all lights were on. What they had were pretty. I'd be mad if we had to pay $20 per person to see lights.

Yelp
I would be remiss to not take the time to review Barnsley after our amazing Hospitality Business Network Fall Conference. We expressed our great pleasure to Shawn Jervis, Nancy Wilkerson and Joy during our time there but have to share with you. From the moment of arrival there is a serenity. We were greeted with a smile at the reception which was seamless. Austin was my first impression and he continued to share his smile and offer assistance by my name the entire three days. Our room/cabin was ready and not only was it pricelessly adorable but clean. We had a beautiful welcome gift and every amenity needed. Jennifer phoned and when I shared the only thing I was personally missing was some cream for coffee the next morning it was delivered and awaiting me that evening before we retired. Comfortable bedding is one of our highest priorities and we both slept like a dream. On a Sunday night with approximately 30 people the Woodlands Grill not only delivered exceptional service but also a 5 Star Meal. Let's just say there was not a bite of my fried lobster tail remaining! My husband had the Wild Boar Bolognese and it was not gamy and captured the essence of the Bolognese with light pappardelle pasta. With this many in a group it was truly an experience to see each person delight in their choices. After dinner we gathered by one of the fire pits and lo and behold...SMORES! Our inner children came out to play as we roasted marshmallows. The left over chocolate accompanied me to the room and made a great late night snack. The Pavillion was a great meeting place with wonderful acoustics. Breakfast was very nice and our meetings went without a gliche both Monday and Tuesday. Joy and Nancy were always on hand to assist. The Beer Garden had a wonderful reception for us and the staff there also handled a deluge of guests with true southern hospitality. I could go on and on but feel we have shared the essence. We are planning another visit already in which we can take part in the many amenities offered included a gorgeous pool and spa, golf course, shooting clays and trails. I am addicted to the Lavender Mint spa products and thankfully those purchased will not last forever and prompt a visit even sooner. Thank you to the entire staff at Barnsley for an amazing retreat and a solidarity in personnel in which have not experienced in a very long time.
