13 New Metro Detroit Bars to Check Out This Spring

"The whiskey bar formerly known as Cornerstone Barrel House has moved on up to Ferndale, taking over the old Dino’s space on Woodward and rebranding as Barrel House. Whiskey-intensive drinks like the Old Fashioned and Manhattan are supplemented with a short list of seasonal cocktails, plus beer and wine. Sunday brunch brings tableside Mimosas, Aperol Spritzes, and boozy coffee drinks." - Serena Maria Daniels

We stopped by for an early Saturday dinner. I can’t put into words how good everything we tried was. It’s been a long time since we’ve tasted dishes with this great of flavor while out to eat, let alone in a relaxed atmosphere. The service was great too. We found our new favorite place to dine in the area.

Google
We visited the barrel house on Friday while barhopping in fashionable Ferndale and had a great time. It was karaoke night and the staff was super friendly and attentive. It was a good night listening to good singers and drinking more than we should've. We will definitely be back again.

Barrel House Ferndale: where comfort food meets cocktail perfection! The Barrel Burger? Absolute magic—juicy, smoky, and so good I almost wrote it a love letter. And the dumplings? Let’s just say I’ll be dreaming about them until my next visit. The old fashioned was pure craftsmanship—balanced, smooth, and just the right kick to make you feel fancy but grounded. The atmosphere? Cozy yet buzzing, like a warm hug with a side of good vibes. The best part? The staff and owner were absolute rock stars, handling a packed Friday night with smiles, charm, and the kind of energy that makes you want to stay just a little longer. This isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience. 10/10, I’ll be back (probably tomorrow)!

We hit this bar on a whim, Saturday. They were holding the “No King” protests on Woodward down there, so traffic was a little chaotic and I almost didn’t go, but I’m so glad that I did. It’s a bar and put me in the mind of Honest John’s downtown Detroit. They only had 2 workers when we arrived and they were pulling double duty, serving tables and bartending; they did not miss a beat. They were on point, attentive and extremely friendly. I ordered the burger and fries and that was one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. I ordered it well done, but it wasn’t burned. They add a white cheddar and your other favorite toppings. The fries happened to be lukewarm, so I asked if I could get fresh fries. The waitress was apologetic and put in an order for more, which came out HOT and fresh. My sister ordered the jerk chicken and she said it was delicious. I took her word for it because I can’t eat spicy at all. Overall, it was a great spot for a burger and beer when in Ferndale and the staff was wonderful!

Wife and I came for a bite to eat. We usually go next door but we had been enough. I ordered the Arancini and she had the the Beet salad with grilled chicken. The Arancini was crunchy smooth. The risotto nice flavor contrasting the exterior. The beet salad was balanced well with the chicken breast cooked well. The service was wonderful. Considering the evening we went the Pistons gave up 49 points to the Jazz in the 1st quarter. Variety of draft on tap.

Google
Presentation was nice the service was good. The food was mediocre.

Google
Had a great experience. The wait staff were all very attentive and helpful. The atmosphere is pretty cool, but it can be loud for conversation. They do have some large screen TVs. Unfortunately, there are no fire sprinklers. We started with the lobster ragoons, which were really good, especially with the mustard. I had the Jerk Chicken. The rice was the best part. Chicken was good, but the rice had a sweetness to it. My wife had the steak fries. They were good, but a little on the salty side. All in all, a great little place.

Google
Service great, food arrived quickly, everyone friendly. I recommend on your ricotta dip to actually reduce the ricotta and add more garlic/caper/tomato mix. I added salt and pepper to mine and that was goof. For fish and chips, recommend adding coleslaw. Now the breading on this one is interesting it's made of salt and vinegar potato chips. While I think this simply just isn't for me, I will say the filet was pretty dry although the taste of the filet and portion sizes good. Fries were great. The tartar sauce is a dill sauce and it comes with a good juicy lemon. I think adding a coleslaw can help cut the dryness though as it qas altogether a dry combination. Again though on that breading I think some of that has to do with my personal taste.

Yelp
We came into this place during Ferndale Pride. We loved it. On that visit, we just had cocktails and appetizers. We had the crab arancini and the chopped caprese, both were amazing. On a later visit, we had the Mac and cheese and chicken sandwich. Again, both were great. The service we received was terrific. Everyone is so friendly. The set up is really nice with garage doors that let in a lot of light and air in good weather. We look forward to future visits.

Yelp
This is the former Dino's, the inside was renovated and about 10% nicer. Located just south of the main 9 Mile strip, very limited street pay parking, nearby pay city lots. They have roll up doors, mix of high tops and tables, a bar on one wall. Limited cocktail menu, and limited tap beer menu. Staff is nice, and fast.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in on a Saturday night. It was not busy. We split the Caprese salad, which was excellent. And, we split the short rib sandwich which was also very good. Good choice of roll on the sandwich. The portion size of both was good. They had beer on tap and a whiskey list. It was dark inside with the low lighting. There was a mixture of tables (high and low) for various size parties. There is a long bar area. We sat by one of the roll up doors on this beautiful summer evening. The service was great. The server was friendly. The food came out quick.

Yelp
Love this place anytime I've been there. Service is always very friendly and fast, food and drinks are excellent. Love the upscale but chill vibes as well

Yelp
My friends and I wanted to check this place out as it's relatively new, and I'm glad we did! We came in for drinks and food on a Saturday evening, and we were able to walk in and get seated right away. Their menu is a good size -- enough options to choose from, but not too overwhelming. I went with the barrel burger (served with fries), and a Moscow mule to drink. We were served quickly, and everything was delicious!! I loved the atmosphere here too. It was relaxed, comfortable, and cozy. This place is the perfect addition to downtown Ferndale. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Popped in for a drink with some friends and bellied up to the bar. The place SCREAMS Christmas right now so get ready for that lol. It's fun to be festive but this felt over the top to me- the only reason for less than 5 stars. The drinks were great and the bartender was super nice with quick service. I felt the drinks were fairly priced but the food was way overpriced and probably the reason I didn't want to stay to eat. I'd come back again during a different time of year!

Yelp
Happy someone finally reopened this place. It's been empty too long. We decided to try it on a Friday evening. Lucky for us it wasn't too crowded. Server was extremely friendly and helpful. Menu is a bit complex and requires some explanation. Extensive bourbon menu. Most menu items made from scratch in-house. Lots of items reminiscent of comfort food. I ordered the short rib sandwich. It was genuinely fantastic. Not fatty at all and very tasty. The side of accompaniment of au jus was extremely flavorful. My daughter and wife ordered salads. The beet salad was a little bit bland. I really look forward to coming back and trying more items on the menu. The only potentially negative they have to say is how expensive this place is. I understand quality comes at a price, but they may want to consider a few less expensive items on the menu.

Yelp
This new restaurant is walking distance from my house so I was really excited to try it. It is decorated very cute and has a good ambiance. It was a nice day and the front of the restaurant was all open air. The servers were very attentive and our food came out fast. I would highly recommend the caprese salad but I didn't love the Mac and cheese- the crumb topping was a tad spicy for me. I am excited to come back and try more dishes.

Yelp
When I first heard Dino's was closing and being changed into a bourbon bar I had such a whirlwind of emotions. On one hand Dino's was very much vital to my youth and so many memories with friends, my first apartment down the street, playing poker... ...and then on the other hand it was going to become a bourbon bar. Yummy yummy yummy bourbon bourbon bourbon bourbon. As you can see from the menu, they definitely hit it out of the park. Great choices in a wide variety of styles and price points. I did not eat anything but as far as I can tell, their food looks very good, and they seemed to have a some interesting choices on the happy hour menu. All in all a great experience.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Happy Hour offerings were good. We had the sliders, the nachos made with cauliflower as the "protein", fries and the coney dog egg rolls. Service was good although a little slow for the bill. Big windows offered a cool breeze inside. Lots of tvs playing different games for you sports fans.

Yelp
Our new favorite place. Amazing food, incredible staff and service, and the ambiance is fun and welcoming. We love it here.

Yelp
I've been here a few times for Sunday brunch. This used to be Dino's and recently they've changed the signage to reflect that it's now Barrel house. I don't know if this has always been the case, but this place is open, inviting, and has garage doors that roll up so you can enjoy a nice day. Service is friendly and fast. I've had shrimp and grits, flat bread, some amazing apps and cocktails. I highly recommend this spot - great low key vibe- tasty food. Believe they relocated from downtown. And it's a great addition to the Ferndale scenery. I will be back!

Yelp
Love this newer place. I went during the holidays and it was decorated beautifully so festive! The food is great and consistent. My waitress was so bubbly and social on a busy Friday night!

Yelp
I can't tell you how happy I was to see that Dino's old spot reopened into something formidable. We were walking by earlier this summer on our way to.... somewhere to drink and eat, when I heard the sound of laughter and the clinking of glasses coming from the open garage doors. I saw people eating yummy looking food with big smiles on their faces, and we had to drop (back) into our old haunt. It's been shuttered for too long, but it's back and it's as good as ever. Still a great staff (a nod to Ashley and the crew).Much like Pine Knob will always be Pine Knob, Barrel House will always be Dino's (sorry new owners). As I'm sitting here again, the seasons have changed, and Barrel House's halls are decked for Christmas. A great way to warm up is a well mixed cocktail and a bowl of Lobster Bisque and a Barrel Burger. BTW, their braised sliders and Roasted Cauliflower Nachos are pretty fantastic if you get there for happy hour.

Yelp
Stellar service, super friendly staff, great eats. Barrel House over Public House all day

Yelp
Didn't eat here but had a good time with my friends enjoying a few drinks. Cool vibe. Service was a bit slow but attentive.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the staff was super friendly. The atmosphere was comfortable and the prices were very reasonable compared to many other restaurants in the area. We came for happy hour and also ordered some entrees off the dinner menu. Everything we ordered was really tasty! I had the beet salad with salmon; it was beautifully plated and full of flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed our first meal at @barrelhouseferndale last night. Coney dog egg rolls were on point for this #coney lover. The bread pudding dessert was delicious and ideal for a late fall evening. The service was so friendly and attentive!
google avatar

Sandy G.

Yelp
Food was excellent. I had meatloaf which might have been the best i ever had and my husband had the short rib sandwich which was equally delicious. Small place that is loud and parking is a problem. Will come back, however, and try more of the menu
google avatar

Yelp
Such a nice spot for drinks and dinner! The Barrel House salad with grilled chicken was really delicious, and my partner enjoyed the (frankly) huge piece of crispy fish that came in the fish and chips. The lighting and vibe are modern and relaxed, though there is a bit of an echo typical of that style. I imagine if more people had been there when we went, it would have been difficult to hear a conversation. Otherwise great spot for a night when you don't feel like cooking or want to impress a date with fancy drinks
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
It was my first time at Barrel House and I was extremely impressed. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere wasn't too classy but also wasn't a dive bar either. It was the perfect place for a casual dinner. Very very clean! Our waitress was beyond nice and friendly. The food was amazing. We got their ricotta dip appetizer to start with. Let's just say we had no left over ricotta dip it was that good! It came with charred pita bread and was delicious. I ended up getting the steak fritters with fries. It was seasoned and cooked perfectly, the steak I could cut with a spoon. My friend got one of their sandwiches she said it was beyond tasty. I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
If you are a fan of fish and chips this is a true go to place. Instead of the traditional cod or perch they serve walleye nicely breaded and roasted. Not greasy like a lot of fish and chips might be. The french fries leave much to be desired crunchy and salty but not really tasty. Good selection of beers and great service. There was a party of eight of us and the place was so loud that you could only talk to the person next to you or across from you.

Joseph T.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! The food menu is amazing! Great drinks and beer selection! But honestly, the thing that has kept us going since day one is the service. Incredibly friendly and attentive. Genuine and personal connections. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I liked the food. The place is simple and welcoming. The appetizers were good but my sandwich was just ok. The waitress was wonderful. Parking is challenging!

Nathan F.

Yelp
This place is great. Came here for date night now know what to expect so here's my honest review: Food is delicious we got the roasted garlic ricotta appetizer to start and it was hands down probably one of my favorite apps I've ever had. Followed by the short rib sandwhich which was delicious and the fish and chips was different however also very good. The menu is not very big but very broad with many different things to try. We did not drink this time however they had a pretty good drink menu it did seem a little pricey (did not order anything so it could very well be worth it) but with that being said everything else on the menu is very reasonably priced. Lastly, idk if they were short staffed or not but there were three servers busting ass for entire place and they did a great job handling it. Will definitely be back again and recommend to others!

Ryan S.

Yelp
great food great service. Owner is great. highly recommend. Coney egg rolls, caprese salad and fried chicken samdwich-delish!
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
Replaced the old Dinos. Nice clean and great music and vibe. We ordered the crab arancinis - almost ate like crab cakes on a bed of red sauce. Also had the caprese that had croutons that lent itself to a panzanella. Enjoyed ourselves!
google avatar

Nicole U.

Yelp
Great happy hour deals! Lobster rangoons are delicious. Also really like the beet salad. Service has always been fast and friendly. Inside is spacious and we've always been able to bring our stroller in when we walk up here!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
These fish n chips are incredible. The staff is always so wonderful, friendly & attentive. So happy to have this new spot in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Lizzy H.

Yelp
I still like it here, but the acoustics really need to be fixed!. It's just too loud making it very hard to have a conversation.

Matt Z.

Yelp
Stopped in to Barrel House last Friday and had such a great experience I had to come back the next Friday. The sequel was as good as the first visit and I am hooked. Sat at the bar. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The food is fantastic...the miso salmon is a must. Friday is karaoke night, and unlike some places where karaoke can be intrusive, it's just plain fun at Barrel House. Overall, a great vibe and crowd. A nice relaxing place to escape. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Great addition to the Ferndale restaurant scene! I enjoyed steak frites and some drinks. The service was excellent, and they did a really nice job with revamping the interior. Also, very reasonable price!
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
In the running for the best burger in town and the rest of the menu is equally good. The Mac and cheese is up there with the burger. Waitstaff is very attentive and pleasant. Came here to watch the Lions game and the atmosphere was great.

Christie B.

Yelp
The absolute BEST food in Ferndale!! Small menu & they do everything superb! Presentation, quality & price are top notch! Staff are amazing & have been there when they were 'The Corner' in Detroit on Woodward. Can't wait for summer when the place will open up to the street! You can watch all the games here on the TV's too!
google avatar

Erica N.

Yelp
Good place, great vibes, taste food! I will come back! I need to try other things in they Menu.
google avatar

Marko A.

Yelp
Holy smokes this is the restaurant Ferndale has needed. Great unique food and drinks options. 10/10 you have to try!
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Came in for a late lunch after walking around the Zoo all day. We had the Coney Hot Dog Egg Rolls to start- really yummy! I had the shawarma flat bread, also delicious & on point with traditional seasoning and flavors. Fiancé had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich that came with shoestring fries- clean plate club! On top of the delicious food, the old fashioned was one of the best ones we have had in awhile. Bartender was super attentive and friendly. Great spot-wish we had something like this near home. If we're ever back in the area this would be a definite stop for us.

erica a.

Yelp
Best burger I've had in a long time!! Thankful for gluten free options and service was fast and friendly. The beet salad is delicious as well.
google avatar

Jacquelyn M.

Yelp
Super chill vibe during the day with TVs behind the bar if you want to go in there for a game. Their mule is probably my favorite around, staff is super attentive and friendly, and their food (s/o coney egg roll) is pretty damn good for a "bar." Will be back!

Andy M.

Yelp
Amazing food and drinks at a great price! The staff is friendly and the service is exceptional. The coney dog egg rolls are a personal favorite as an appetizer, along with either their signature burger, or jerk chicken. I've literally never had a bad experience here. Definitely going to be a regular spot for happy hours. They were 5 stars when they were located in Detroit and are even better since moving to Ferndale!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Five or six stars. Great list of booze at fair prices. Veggie flatbread was quite spectacular! Can't wait to come back and try some of the other temping menu items. Service was superb!

Scott L.

Yelp
Great food and service I would recommend highly, stop by during Dream Cruise week, perfect location!
