My son and I had a stopover at the Phoenix airport when flying back to SFO from Long Beach on Tuesday night, May 9, 2023. We had dinner at Barrio Cafe since we were going to arrive at our home close to midnight.
Walking through several terminals to check out the eateries, we were surprised to find that most of the places to get food were already closed by 8 PM. Luckily, we found this restaurant for a sit-down dinner - we were not in the mood for fast food nor grab-and-go grub.
Upon arrival, we were seated without a wait and the host gave us a single menu for the two of us to share. Not sure why he did that because the restaurant didn't look like they were low on inventory of menus to hand out. I found it inconvenient and only when the same host noticed me taking pictures of the entrance (for my Yelp check-in), where a menu sign was posted, did he approach my son to ask if I needed a menu for my myself. Uh, yeah. Why didn't he give it to me in the first place??
The venue is decent in size with tables, booths, and a bar where they have two televisions. The place was fairly packed with patrons sitting in scattered areas of the restaurant. We were originally going to be seated at a regular table, but I asked to be at a booth instead. My request was granted without issue. The entire area appeared to be decently clean; however, I did not like that a pail & mop were sitting right smack in the middle of the dining room, located just a few feet away from our table. I can appreciate that they clean their floor, but it was clear that someone abruptly stopped the task and abandoned the pail with mop in plain view to everyone in the dining room. It's not exactly something I enjoy to see while eating.
My son found the menu to be limited in food offerings, but he did enjoy his meal very much. I ordered the Tacos de Camaron ($17.99) and he had the Burrito Pollo Poblano ($16.99). I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty my tacos were. As I mentioned, my son really like his burrito, but he did find it to be on the small side, so he ordered another for to-go to eat and savor again in the plane.
Service was quick and friendly, but we were given our check without being asked if we were interested in ordering anything else, like dessert.
In short, Barrio Cafe is a fair to good restaurant choice at the Phoenix airport. The food is flavoursome, but the overall attention to customer experience detail is under par.
