Barrio Tacos locations in Michigan have been sued for alleged wage theft | Eater Detroit

"The East Lansing franchise, opened by owner Jacob Hawley in 2020, is one of three Michigan locations named in a U.S. Department of Labor lawsuit alleging widespread Fair Labor Standards Act violations. The complaint—filed Sept. 7 in federal court—claims that for at least the past two years employees were forced into an unlawful tip-sharing scheme requiring them to give a portion of their tips to managers after each shift, who then redistributed those tips to non-tipped staff; tipped workers were also allegedly paid below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Investigators say overtime was calculated using the lower tip-credit rate instead of the applicable minimum wage and that accurate records of hourly rates and overtime were not kept. The Wage and Hour Division seeks $823,324 in back wages and liquidated damages on behalf of 177 workers and has assessed $23,904 in civil penalties against Hawley and the three franchise locations; the restaurants are part of a chain founded in 2012 that previously faced unrelated legal controversy over its concept." - Serena Maria Daniels

It's a great place to eat outside on nice days, and service is superb. The food is like most everything in a Midwest college town, a bit bland but ok. Drinks weren't bad, but wine selection was very limited. Inside can get really loud, outside is the place to be if you just want to enjoy the evening. Gets very crowded later in the evening. Service really was great.

Stopped here with my mom after helping my sister move in. The atmosphere is definitely college town vibes. Lots of seating, both inside and outside. Nice decor and it was very clean. The staff were very friendly but service was not great. We ordered a drink when our dinner was served. We ended up waiting almost 30 minutes for the drink to arrive. At that time, we had finished our dinners. We then waited an additional 10 minutes for our leftover containers & bill. They were not that busy, so I am unsure of what the issue was. The food was okay, but nothing incredible. It was hot and came relatively quickly. But I was not impressed with the flavor. I am hopeful that I can visit again and receive better service and a better meal.

We had a nice server. Service was quick. The music was too loud. Tacos were mid. The flavor of canned corn is distracting and...bad? I've always hated canned vegetables. Maybe it's just me but I'm feeling like it's better to just make food at home since I can at least get fresh ingredients then. The taco bowl my husband ordered was VERY salty and I probably wouldn't have eaten it if I'd ordered it. It was my first time going and I don't feel a strong drive to return given the cost and the result. Expensive food that is just *fine* is why I don't try new places or really even eat out anymore.

The food is about $25-30 for 2 people as each taco without add ons is about $5, everyone has always been super nice and the food is really good. It has a collage town vibe which isn't bad but it can be loud in the evening. Food has always come out super fast as well.

Unique build your own street taco restaurant. You order with a paper checksheet were you can build your own tacos or choose from the chef specials. Large drink menu with a variety of margaritas and other specialty drinks Service was quick and the atmosphere was punk, modern. Chips and salsa come with the meal with the option for additional flavors and spice levels.

We had a great time at Barrio. Fun take on tacos. They have build your own or their stable pre designed choices. Excellent quality ingredients with decent portions. The chips and salsa are great! Decent selection of draft beer. The real star is "the sassy pineapple" margarita. Phenomenal, truly. The standard one is great we also tried it with strawberry that was outstanding as well. I would recommend and would love to come back.

Awesome chic interior with expensive sloppy garbage food. Probably the second time in my life I didn’t finish eating a taco. Done with this chain.

I got 3 custom tacos and a Marigold margarita from Barrio. Delicious! I also got the bourbon peach guacamole which was SO good. All of the staff were friendly and the waitress was attentive. I had a great meal and would eat here again!
