Minneapolis and Saint Paul’s Best Mezcal Lists | Eater Twin Cities

"Considering it’s a tequila joint, it’s no surprise that Barrio has a mezcal cocktail. The Up In Smoke pairs it with pineapple juice, fresh squeezed lime juice and some serrano pepper." - Cinnamon Janzer

Google
Barrio is a great tapas style spot in downtown Minneapolis! I'd recommend a reservation to go here, especially on the weekend, as it is a smaller restaurant. The atmosphere is very funky and more modern, and there's no shortage of interesting things to look at here. Barrio has an extensive tequila list, and they offer tequila flights as well. Our server was very kind and knowledgeable about the tequila, and the food was delicious! Everything from chips and guacamole to tacos to rice was on point! Definitely consider checking this restaurant out!

Google
We had a fantastic time tonight. We sat at the bar and received amazing service and had the best seafood tacos. You must try the Ahi Tuna taco. It was easily the best taco I’ve ever had. The seared tuna was cooked perfectly and the avocado salsa complimented it perfectly. We’re not from here, but we’ve already made plans to come here specifically in a couple of months

Stopped to have a drink and appetizer while visiting. Ordered espresso martinis and unbeknownst to us had tequila… we tried to love it… our server was very cool and chill. He brought us different drinks and they were awesome. The service was so personable and Taylor had an incredibly infectious personality! Definitely a cool vibe with great music.

Google
I love the atmosphere! It’s super copy, and there are two levels. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of the food. Everything was a hit or miss. The mocktail drinks and the Mahi Mahi taco were amazing and absolutely phenomenal. The achiote chicken and black bean tostada, as well as the ceviche, were both not my favorites. The tostado had soooo much lettuce and very little meat, the only thing I could taste was the lettuce and the shell. The ceviche had a bunch of fruit, making it super sweet. I typically prefer a more tart ceviche with no fruit just vegetables and seafood. Overall, the atmosphere is great for happy hour and grabbing small bites and a drink.

Google
Great cozy restaurant. Enjoyed our visit with friends. We were lucky to find a table without reservation. The food was delicious and so was the atmosphere. Our server had a great sense of humor. The tacos were tasty and the fried yuca even better. The desserts were gone in seconds. I strongly recommend this place.

Google
My date and i ate outside. It was nice and cozy on the patio and the service was great. The food lacked seasoning and both my date and i wanted salt. The tre leches cake had coconut on it which was a different flair and twist, it had nice presentation though.

Google
Barrio is always a nice spot for a drink and some tacos. They offer all of their tacos al a cart so you can order as many as you would like. We tried the pork belly taco, shrimp taco, gringo taco and the fish taco. We enjoyed all of them except the fish taco was a little on the fishy side unfortunately. The ceviche was excellent though, super fresh and full of bright flavors. They have a nice selection of cocktails as well as beer and wine. Definitely worth a stop!

Google
Really enjoyed my night at Barrio. The margaritas were legit—super fresh and had a nice kick without being too strong. I got the burrito and it was exactly what I was hoping for—really flavorful and filling without being too heavy. Shoutout to Taylor who took care of us—super chill and made some great recs. The whole vibe was relaxed but still had good energy. Definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to when I’m in the mood for good drinks and solid food.

Yelp
Nice active outdoor vibe, lots of outdoor seating on a beautiful day during the art fest. Parking was easy on the street. Seat yourself, have had two waiters stop to ask us right after we sat down! We tried some different tacos and a Cuban sandwich, and added some chips and salsa. All were spiced exactly as requested and included lots of fresh peppers and veggies. I've never stopped here but will definitely be back!

Yelp
Stopped by Barrio for lunch. Glad we made reservations as they were quite busy. Appreciated the outdoor seating, especially on a nice day. Despite having a good lunch special (guac, chips, and 2 tacos [couldn't choose as it was special] for $14), I opted to order a la cart. Shared the house-made guacamole, which came with freshly made chips and ancho-tomatillo salsa, and fried Yucatan, which came with a chimichurri and lemon aioli sauce. Both were plentiful for sharing. Guac was good, but definitely could have used more salt & pepper. The ssalsa had a nice kick to it, which I enjoyed. Yucatan fries also good - crispy and not oily. Couldn't eat too many though as they were on the heavier side. For my main meal, I got two tacos - mahi mahi and carnitas. I enjoyed both, but the carnitas a little more as it had more flavor to it. I'd definitely visit again if I ever come back to Minneapolis!

Yelp
I'm from California so I'm spoiled with great Mexican food but this place was not bad. I went with a party of 8 and the place was busy so service was very slow. BUT the server was nice. Each dish is like tapas style so it's easy to share with others. I loved the guacamole! It was paired very well with the crunchy tortilla chips. The chicken enchiladas were ok, there was a certain kick missing but they were good. The mama cita cocktail was a bit strong and not the flavors I expected but the presentation of the drink was very cute!
google avatar

Yelp
Didn't eat because the place looked so dirty. Looks like you need a good manager to make sure the basics are done.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good food and great margaritas. It was very crowded which is a good sign. I was traveling alone on business so I sat and ate at the bar. The queso fundido appetizer was very good, I've never had it with goat cheese but that added an interesting flair.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great spot in downtown, especially if you can walk and sit outside as I imagine parking can be tricky. We had some queso and tacos, everything was delicious. I also got a mocktail that was super great. My friend got a michelada and loved it as well. Service was quick.
google avatar

Yelp
Beware of hidden ingredients...I have several food allergies most notably "nightshades": tomato, potato, chili....their "Cilantro Lime rice is mixed with tomatillo salsa. Would have been great to know this before hand! It's not disclosed on the menu! Thanks Barrio
google avatar

Yelp
This slightly upscale Mexican restaurant offers a fantastic dining experience. I visited during happy hour, and although it was crowded, I was seated and served quickly. The food was absolutely delicious--flavorful, well-prepared, and worth every bite. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped by Barrio in Minneapolis for a quick lunch on a Saturday afternoon after the Boat Show. We walked in and the restaurant was except for one or two other tables, surprising for a Saturday afternoon. The bar area was beautifully stocked with tons of tequila and liquor, but empty of patrons. We were seated quickly and given menus and water right away. I ordered the signature margarita and it was really well done - I especially liked the orange peel that added some nice brightness. To start we ordered the guacamole with chips. The guacamole was really bright and fresh and came with some nice jalapeños and radishes that added good texture. I appreciate that they give enough chips to finish the guacamole and we didn't have to ask for more. For lunch I ordered a grilled shrimp taco and the quinoa bowl. The taco was nice - good spiciness and lots of fresh cilantro made it a solid taco. The quinoa bowl was bland and nothing special, but was nice for a lunch that wasn't super heavy. Others ordered the mahi mahi tacos and ahi tuna tacos. The ahi tuna tacos were a favorite of the group. Overall, this was a fine visit with good service. This would be a perfect happy hour spot!

Yelp
Summary: solid taco place with some tacos better than others, though I wish their tortillas held up better. I placed an online order from a nearby hotel for three tacos: - achiote chicken - steak - pork belly The pork belly was excellent and easily my favorite. The steak taco wasn't memorable but it was very good. The achiote chicken was good but the taco seemed to fall apart even more easily than the others. I wish their tortillas had stood up a little better to the tacos but overall I very much enjoyed my food. Service was also very good and my food was ready and well-packaged for pickup when I got there.

Yelp
Chile de ancho steak burrito was alright, I was expecting well marinated steak however I couldn't really taste the chili de ancho sauce. The sauce was also served with tortilla chips and was not spicy at all. Tasted like a mild spice ketchup. The real star of the show was the enter the dragon drink. This had habanero pepper inside with passion fruit. The pair was a spicy fruity delight with tequila. Truly delicious. The diamente pepino was refreshing but not as much flavor as the enter the dragon. This restaurant is best for getting drinks, pass on the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Ambiance of this place is very eye-catching. It definitely has a unique touch to its design from the doors, to the tequila wall and all of the wall pieces. Sauces were not spicy at all, which was a turn off. Burritos were kind of basic, nothing out of the ordinary. The drinks were really good though. I love their tequila selection, which can be found in the brown menu booklet. I got the diamente pepino drink and it was really refreshing and made my whole night. A very well blended cucumber concoction that fits any mood , any occasion. A must have. Enter the dragon - sweet and salty with a spicy kick at the end that stays in the back of your throat but it's so good. The citrus base is a rockstar addition that ties everything well. Chicken plate - habanero sauce is the bomb.com Rice is underwhelming. If I was blind folded I would not know it was cilantro rice. Beans were undercooked and hard, but the cabbage slaw was really good. Yucca fries - fried to perfection. A heavenly combo with the aeoli sauce Chile de árbol steak burrito - wish there was more spice with the meat as described on menu and the red salsa that comes with it taste like ketchup. Overall an ok place to eat. I wouldn't run back here immediately but I would stop by for the drinks.

Yelp
The Barrio is a quaint little spot on Nicolette, with inside and outside dining. Self seating outside was a WIN. The weather was so nice and the ambience was great. We were able to people watch and chit chat while enjoying good food. The chips and guacamole were fresh and delish. The grilled chicken plate was just what I needed after a long day of travel. And the Mamacita cocktail to top it off was the cherry on top. I throughly enjoyed my meal. The waitress were darling!
google avatar

Janee M.

Yelp
I ordered the Quinoa Bowl. It was supposed to have grilled vegetables, queso Fresca, avocado and I added chicken. In reality it was all quinoa with tiny grilled vegetables addedwaThe chicken had flavor and the quinoa was cooked well; however the vegetables were almost non existent and thst was the reason I ordered thr bowl.

Yelp
Barrio is a small tapas restaurant in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. The service was friendly and inviting, with an intimate atmosphere. Our table ordered many different items (tacos, shrimp, burritos, guac) - all were good but fairly standard.
google avatar

Julia V.

Yelp
Decent food but portions are on the smaller side. Service is fine but not remarkable. Great location for people watching and the drinks are amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
My experience here was when they first opened I was amazed at the amount of tequilas they had I tasted some of the food they offered. And left each night on a good note I thoroughly enjoyed the extensive collection of tequilas because there were some there that I'm sure my grandfather didn't have. I did treat myself on my birthday to a very rare tequila that I still remember to this day and let's say that was probably 15 years ago. Salud .

Yelp
Food was delicious especially the mahi tacos!!! Taylor was so awesome as a server we came back for his exceptional service the same noght. Prices were good for what we got, no complaints there. If we would have known how good they were we would have been there our first night in Minneapolis!

Craig B.

Yelp
Always a go-to when I'm downtown. Fun, relaxed atmosphere. Tacos and salsas are awesome. Staff is always perfect.

Yelp
Came in for a business trip and was looking to grab dinner near our hotel. The hotel recommended this place for its margaritas!! We walked over from our hotel and was quickly seated. It wasn't that crowded but after our dinner and drinks the restaurant got busier. We had the avocado dip and chips which was great fresh avocado and I also had the chicken burrito which was huge. I had a macho margaritas which wasn't spicy and another margarita that was strong. I loved the vibe and drinks. I'd come again!!!
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
Some friends and I made a reservation at barrio for a birthday dinner over the weekend. Since it's downtown, we expected it to be busier but it was surprisingly quiet, probably because it was a Sunday night (not that we minded!). Service was incredible, and I cannot speak highly enough about our server! She was so friendly and helpful with giving lots of recommendations on what to order. For food, we started with a few apps: queso fundito, chips and guac, and the salsas. The salsa selection was good, but nothing spectacular, as was the guac. However, we did love the chips! They were made in house and so crispy. The queso was a hit or miss with our table, some loved the flavor and others didn't love the texture (it was definitely thicker, more like a grilled piece of cheese instead of a sauce). The fried yuca we shared was or favorite small plate! I got a steak burrito and it was delicious and a very large portion! I ate half and took the other half as leftovers. For a drink, I got the strawberry Fresca mock tail and really liked it, it was super refreshing.

Yelp
A few girl friends and I went to Barrio on a Sunday night to celebrate one of their birthdays! The restaurant itself has a very cool & edgy feel, which I could see being more busy on a Friday or Saturday night - but this Sunday the place only had 2-3 other small groups/individuals there. Our server was fabulous, I wish I got her name! She was super upbeat, helpful and gave great recommendations- she even split our check/apps 7 ways. I appreciated that she explained to us beforehand that everything comes out as it's ready - so anything we're not sharing we will have to eat at different times. Personally, I don't really love the concept since we all felt weird eating at different times in a big group - we all ended up kind of nibbling until the everyone got their food. I'm currently on an N/A drink kick and appreciate when restaurants offer them! I tried the Strawberry Mint Spritz, and it was delicious. For being just muddled strawberries, soda water, lemon and mint, this was very flavorful and sweet. I would definitely order again (and attempt to recreate at home). We ordered one of each of the apps to share with the table - Chips & Salsa, Guac and Queso. The salsa and guac wasn't anything too special, but it was yummy! The chips are homemade too which is a plus - but beware they charge you if you get another bowl of chips. I personally didn't like the Queso - it was more like just melted cheese than a creamy mixed queso - it got gloopy and had oil separation really quickly. Once it hit the plate it really started to solidify - I had issues with that consistency but the rest of the group liked it. For my main dish I got the Sugarcane Skewered Shrimp - this was delicious! I loved the charred flavor on the shrimp, plus the marinade was very flavorful. However, I did think the $16 price was a little steep for a small plate that didn't come with rice or any sort of side. Overall, I don't think Barrio is anything too special for the price, but it's definitely a fun try!

Yelp
We ate here after long day of travel. We started with chips and guacamole and salsa. Guacamole came with cilantro and radishes as garnish which was nice. The salsa was uneventful but being from Texas I may be biased. I had the quinoa bowl minus the queso and my friends had fish tacos and burrito. Everything was flavorful and nicely presented.
google avatar

Yelp
In town for couple nights. Found this close to Hilton and was not disappointed. Great food and drinks at reasonable prices. Ahi taco set my mouth on fire but was so tasty. Off to twins game now.
google avatar

Neha H.

Yelp
We had the chips and Guacamole n it was terrific. For our main course we had the enchiladas, the burrito and the spicy habanero chicken tamale, Infact they were kind enough to accommodate my toddler and made a cheese quesadilla for him. Fabulous food, will go again.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
We stopped in at the end of a pub crawl on a Friday and grabbed the last two seats at the bar. The place was PACKED with a happy crowd that appeared to be having a good time. Our bartender was quick & friendly, and his cocktails hit the spot on a very warm afternoon. We loved the salsa trio, but as a chips & salsa expert from New Mexico I found the chips to be a little less than perfect in thickness and consistency. We didn't try anything on the menu, but it looked very solid. The service and vibe alone would bring us back. A very fun spot for a Friday happy hour.

Yelp
Food: 5 Service: 5 Ambiance: 5 Barrio is a delicious Latin American restaurant. It is upscale and can be seen through the food as well as the decor. I wish I had pictured it, but they had a large mural that was filled with signatures from people in graffiti. Our server gave me a great recommendation to try the Achiote Chicken and Black Bean Tostada, and it was amazing!
google avatar

Xia Y.

Yelp
Stopped by for an early lunch and everything was delicious. The tacos were flavorful. The burrito was pact with protein and carbs. The drinks were delicious. Service was quick and attentive. We sat out on the patio. Everything was clean.
google avatar

Cass A.

Yelp
Their outdoor seating space paired with Sangria and Guacamole was the perfect combination. The Sangria transported me back to Spain. The guacamole was fresh and paired nicely with the little salsa on the side.

Yelp
I haven't been to Bario since it opened, so that's been a while. I lived dtwn at the time and wanted to step out somewhere alone, not too far from home. I had just left Target and thought... ya know what, Barrio! I did sit at the bar for some time (I hate bar seating, but all the tables were full) before I was even acknowledged. I didn't get an attitude, I just waited... and then FINALLY, theonebartenderworkingalonewhowassuperbusy (yep say that in one breath) finally acknowledged me and apologized for being busy and said he would be with me shortly, took my drink order and said he would take my menu order shortly. He did just that. I ordered a Blood Orange Margita and he made the heck outta that thing too! Food: Grilled Shrimp Taco x2 Grilled Steak Taco Yuca All of which were really very good! It took quite a while for my food to come up, so theonebartenderworkingalonewhowassuperbusy did me a solid and gave me another drink - but on him- for my patience with him and the food. Again... I'm not at all... matter of fact, by the time my food showed up, I was feeling pretty good. Also the manager, who wasn't too friendly initially AT ALL, he seemed like his guard was up (which could happen in that business) ended up being super friendly, once i complimented his play list. He had me in there seat dancing and enjoying myself waiting on my food. I'll be back again. enjoyed my food and drink.

Melissa F.

Yelp
Great street tacos and guacamole! Fun atmosphere and a great date night spot. So glad we checked it out while visiting Minneapolis.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
Cool tequila bar! The mural and bar wall with ladder was fun to look at. The servers were very attentive and nice and gave good drink recommendations. All of the tacos come with just 1 per order so you can mix and match. The drinks were just strong enough and tacos were delicious.

Yelp
While doing a Sunday Funday, my friends and I made a stop in here and had a great time. Based on the reviews, I was not expecting what we experienced. Upon entering we found a few open seats at the bar and quickly made ourselves at home. In no time we were greeted by a friendly bartender who quickly shared the specials and then gave us a moment to decide what we wanted to sip. I went with the Black Diamond and was pleasantly surprised with how refreshing it was. After a couple of rounds of drinks, we decided to order some food to help soak up the drinks. We started with chips and signature salsas; while I've had better chips and salsa, this was decent. For my entrée, I ordered the Sandwich Cubano and it did not disappoint. I would definitely order this again. In addition to bar seating, there is a vast amount of dining room space along with a sidewalk patio (weather permitting). Barrio will be on my list of places to check out on future visits to Minneapolis.
google avatar

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Stopped in here yesterday. Both the steak and the pork belly tacos were amazing. Two is definitely enough, even if you're hungry, because they really give ample fillings. My fiancé had the grilled chicken plate which was also really good. Every one of the salsas on the chips and signature salsas option was to die for, but my favorite was the medium salsa. They mix a magical drink, and we were having a great time. Every employee was amazing, helpful and polite. The atmosphere is fun and puts you in a partying mood. This is a place I will be frequenting in the near future
google avatar

Shaji K.

Yelp
Had a reservation for five people on a Tuesday evening. Large interior with multi level seating as well as tables setup outside for the nice weather. After having a large lunch, wasn't too hungry for dinner. Decided on the Queso Fundido w/Chorizo ($12) to go along with a Surly Furious ($8). Fundido is a cheesy and greasy mess of a dip, served alongside warm tortillas. Actually more balanced than expected, pairing well with the bitter beer. Service is quick despite the crowd and they come around often for refills of water. Straightforward spot for after work drinks in the area.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Came here for lunch. Were sat and then asked by the waitress to switch tables so they could use our table to combine with another in order to accommodate at group of 4. Before we could even say anything she threatens that if we didn't move she was just going to squeeze them in right next to us and it was going to be very uncomfortable. We were willing to move regardless. After waiting 20 min for our order to be taken we waited another 45 for our food. We left at that point because we had to catch a plane. Horrible service!! Go somewhere else!
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
Fresh, yummy latin American food that's got a pretty location downtown! Our server was very attentive and nice, and the food was great. I had the sangria and it came with fresh fruit, and I ordered the carne burrito and it was very tasty. The flavors blended great together and you can tell it's some homemade stuff and it was the perfect portion. Prices aren't too bad / it's what you expect for eating out these days, I'd definitely return for some elevated burritos and tacos!
google avatar

Eli H.

Yelp
Barrio has a fun vibe if you are going there for drinks. If you are going for food, the expectation at this restaurant is that your food will not all come out at the same time. The food comes out one by one when it's ready. You and your friends will not be eating together, more like watching each other eat.... The service was only alright. It felt like the waiter was avoiding eye contact. That being said, everything we ordered tasted good! We tried the following: Mahi Mahi taco 4/5 Carnitas taco 5/5 Queso 3/5 Guac 4/5 Cubano sandwich 5/5
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Honestly not the experience I was hoping for. Came here on a Sunday night since my usual place was closed. The place is very cool and the staff is very nice but our food and drinks were overall just average. Starting with the Barrio Marg, the margarita was very sweet. Not super enjoyable but drinkable at least. The chips and salsa was good especially since there were multiple kinds but was very disappointed to see a charge for extra chips. The tacos are a hit or miss. Table favorites were the carnitas, grilled chicken, and gringo. The other half were average at best.
google avatar

Trina V.

Yelp
I wanted to like Barrio because the staff was so kind and accommodating and the vibes were great, but the food itself was expensive and just ok. I got the pork belly taco and the steak tacos and both were kinda bland. My partner got the carnitas taco, and he said it was dry. I wished they gave us salsa for the tacos to help, but honestly, for $6 and $7 for a single taco, there are a lot of better options in the Twin Cities. The Yucca fries are good though.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't believe this place doesn't have a higher rating. We were warmly greeted by a young man out front, who I thought was the manager but wasn't. He invited us in and we were immediately seated. Sammie was our waitress and made some great recommendations. It's tapas style so sit back and relax and order lots of courses. Our joint favorites were the fundido with chorizo and the tamale. Everything was good but those two stood out. The gentleman that I thought was the manager checked on us several times and just made the experience perfect. We did eventually see the manager who liked like he was trying out his Halloween costumes or either a Target employee or Jake from State Farm. We never did talk to him. Definitely check this place out. PS we went for a walk and stoped back in on our way back to the hotel to sit outside and listen to a. Awesome street performance and sip some tequila. Turns out The young man mentioned above is named Caesar.

Yelp
This place was amazing. Excellent choices and food was fresh and really good! We were in town front Houston and highly Recommend! Excellent service and the food was truly amazing!

Yelp
Happy hour here is great!!! Another great random find thanks to yelp. I was a bit skeptical given the reviews but after consulting google reviews I decided to take a chance because I was hangry!! Drinks are really good- my fav being the mamacita margarita- our waitress Marla was really amazing and added jalapeños to my mamacita margarita for an added touch. Carnita tacos were my fav dish, followed by the ceviche, which was very fresh. The mahi taco was also really good. Fish was breaded so it filled me up quickly. A friend who was with me ordered the chicken tamale and that was good- I ordered the house made habanero salsa for an extra kick to add to all dishes and that was definitely a special addition- would highly recommend. Overall this was a really pleasant experience. I'm surprised the reviews are lower given the experience I had with my crew- we even went back the day after and brought more friends. Ambiance was nice but definitely make reservations because by 6:15 they were bursting at the seams with people.

Yelp
Casual atmosphere with very flavorful food. Not traditional American Mexican food. Portions are smaller in size, but everything is made when ordered, with fresh ingredients. There is a full bar with an extension tequila selection. Be sure to order a margarita, a Diamante Pepino, if you like a little bite to your cocktail. The freshly made guacamole and homemade chips are delicious and good to share. The pork tostada and chicken taco are great. Order both for a nice meal. I sat at the bar, and the service was friendly , quick and attentive.

Yelp
This place was amazing and was a great dinner choice. One of the best mahi mahi tacos I've had. The chips and salsa options were also incredible. My wife had the vegetarian burrito which was absolutely amazing, and huge so I got to eat half. Nice atmosphere and very attentive staff.

Lily E.

Yelp
A spot I'll stop by a few times a year, I always know what I'm going to get before I show up. Shoutout the server Lexi, always remembers me even if it's been 6 months since I've seen her and remembers my order. Makes me feel like barrio is a neighborhood bar. Great job to her!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed their variety of tequila and tasting flights. Very knowledgeable staff.
