The 11 Best Restaurants In Portsmouth, New Hampshire - Portsmouth - The Infatuation

"The Scantron ordering slips at Barrio might take you back to the standardized testing days, but you’ll be navigating endless taco options instead of trying to figure out some arbitrary math puzzle. Get at least one taco with a green goddess tortilla, which you might think involves salad dressing, but is actually just a combination of a hard and soft shells with queso and guac sandwiched in between. There are also a dozen different margaritas with flavors like strawberry-pear, lychee, and mango-thyme, and you can get a flight to mix and match your favorite flavors, salt, and sugar rims." - anne cruz

Very cool atmosphere - the staff was great and our waitress was awesome. We went with 3 hungry college kids and everyone was happy and full when we left. The make your own option for tacos was great! The chicken bacon ranch bowl was delish! Would definitely go there again!

I’ve been to Barrio several times and always make a point to stop by when in Portsmouth. The build-your-own menu is a fun, creative way to mix unique flavors, and the Margarita Perfecto was true to its name. I had four tacos with a variety of ingredients—flavorful as always—but this time they arrived a bit cold. The chilled toppings and sauces likely contributed, and warmer tortillas could’ve helped balance the temperature. I also found that the Green Goddess, Bombshell, and Stoner tortilla options had less filling than usual between the shells. While this wasn’t my best visit, Barrio typically delivers a great experience, and I’ll definitely be back.

Google
Fun atmosphere, fantastic service, the food leaves a lot to be desired, but you are probably not going here for the food, this is a great place for drinks and atmosphere. The menu is a bit confusing but it’s nice you can make your own taco creations. I decided to go with the El Pastor bowl and some queso. Not sure I would go back but if you are visiting Portsmouth looking for a fun place to hang out, I would recommend a visit.

Google
Fun bar style atmosphere. Kitchen is open late. The food was delicious. Got the nachos which we great! Enjoyed the vibe and the food after seeing a show that got out late. Save this for a late night stop!

Google
Proteins were cold, really cold. 1/3 of my order was wrong. Service was weirdly bad (not crowded- but I saw another single elderly woman waiting for any help at all) . I stopped counting at 7 server passes by adjacent tables, despite me waving and saying excuse me. I arrived, stood at the check in, waited 5 minutes, entered the place, no one noticed me and my two dogs. I sat on the patio, 3 server passes, gave up. Went to the bar with my order, was sent to the patio. It was really weird. Train servers to scan at least the adjacent tables. Ultimately my server was pleasant, if unavailable. Finally, a nice guy brought my pups water. Over all, a fail. I can't recommend anyone go there. For the record, I generally leave good reviews. Nice location though. Don't use their lot, it's $20. Street parking is $4.

Google
Always loved barrio because of the unique menu to create your own tacos but came today and both me and my husband’s tacos were so noticeably small.. just barely filled. And the stoner taco which lists it comes with queso (and bacon) didn’t have queso. They didn’t add the Carolina reaper sauce I was excited for. We were disappointed.

Google
I used Barrios Haverhill to cater our Labor Day party and they knocked it out of the park!! So good they deserve a review at the other locations! Food was amazing! From the initial ordering to delivery and everything between the staff absolutely went above and beyond to make sure this part of our party was seamless. Professionalism and genuine care is a rare treat these days. Thank you Barrios!!

Google
I’d give Barrio a 3.5. Positives: I love that they’re open late, hard to find in NH. They have so many options, especially for the build your own tacos which makes for a unique experience and the biggest reason why I give this place stars—I liked being able to build three totally unique tacos just how I wanted. The bacon jam guacamole was very good and a large portion, and came with free salsa which was also very tasty. They also have a very large drink selection and their cocktails looked good. Negatives: PRICE. This place is very expensive for what it is. My partner and I each got dinner, shared the guac, and ordered 3 drinks total and our total was $100. The tacos were good but kind of skimpy on filling. We got a side of black beans for $1.50 and the size was laughable, picture a little cup you use for ketchup!!!!! One of our tacos was forgotten and then took a while to finally get it. This certainly is not a Mexican restaurant, if that’s what you’re looking for go elsewhere (at least your meal will come with a side of rice and beans there). But if you’re looking for a unique experience and like to handpick your ingredients then I suggest trying it but keeping in mind how much you’ll spend.

Yelp
The place is medium sized and has interesting decor, I liked the painted walls. It was pretty busy with mostly college age kids. The margarita flight was delicious and the queso was also fantastic. The amount of stuff you can put on your tacos is outrageous and mine were massive lol. Minus a star because I understand it was 8pm on a friday night, but the music was so loud and club-like that I couldn't really have a conversation, which didn't seem fitting since most people were sitting having dinner rather than perusing the bar.

Yelp
This is my second review of this place. Downgrading from 5 to 3 stars. Original visit took place in the winter of 2021/22. I marked this joint as best tacos north of NY, and finally I was close enough for repeated visit. First. area is improving but way too much construction around and 22$ minimum in parking. Second. Menu is still the same but meat portions are noticeably smaller. I used to fill up after having just 3 taco, and today I figured that 3 were going to be a snack. Third. Service level has gone down considerably. At least 5 mistakes between 5 taco and sides for them. This tells me that kitchen is not even looking or servers don't care about what they're entering. Final nail in the coffin: timing. 7 minutes to get a simple non-alcoholic drink, 25 minutes to get 5 taco, and then more than 10 minutes to come back for credit card: I ended up leaving establishment with cash on the table. Good stuff. I loved extra bacon. My dogs loved it even more. Product pairing on suggested taco is really nice. Good selection of alcoholic beverages. This used to be new style shick place. Now it became local taco place. I doubt that I will have another chance for a visit in the next 3 years. If I owned the place I would double food price, considerably improve service and kitchen speed, and make workers leave cell phones in a special box.

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about this spot! My friends and I were driving through Portsmouth and stopped off for lunch. The restaurant itself is super funky, with really cool interior, but we actually decided to eat outside. The patio area was great and the waitstaff made sure to check on us frequently. The highlight of this place is the menu. Great food and amazing drinks. I love how you can customize your tacos. Even better, the prices were quite reasonable. Everything tasted delicious. If I'm ever back in the area, I'd like to return!

Yelp
We had a short wait so went and walked around the cool art gallery that is attached to the restaurant. Margarita flights and tacos were excellent. Lots of choices (a bit overwhelming). I recommend the green goddess shells. House guacamole was excellent and the salsa was delicious.

Yelp
I am not sure why all the reviews seem bad but this is my favorite taco place. You get to build your own tacos and there are soooo many options, and everything is amazing. My friend is vegetarian and she said it had the most options she has ever been able to choose from. She loved her tacos. We got queso and chips and it was fantastic. The service was also amazing. The vibe inside is super cool too. Every time I come to Portsmouth I will go here!

Yelp
Barrio... what happened?! We recently revisited and it was so underwhelming and so disappointing. I was initially concerned about showing up for a late lunch - there were times in the past when the wait here could be an hour plus on a sunny weekend day. There was no one in line; and, actually, half the restaurant was empty. We ordered a round of drinks. My dad said his beer tasted funny; my partner and I each got a different cocktail that somehow were the exact same color. His tasted like bitters and whiskey, mine tasted like simple syrup and whiskey. We didn't finish them. The traditional guacamole and chips were okay; the guacamole wasn't super seasoned and it seemed more like a bland avocado spread (see the ice cream scoop of it). We were only allowed one basket of chips -- in the past, they'd refill it no problem/no upcharge. I made my own tacos: #1 a flour tortilla with thai chili tofu and cilantro lime rice, cilantro and onions for toppings, and secret sauce. The tofu was inedible; the texture was so tough, I couldn't chew it. Also, you'll see it was more onions than anything else. #2 a flour tortilla with crispy sweet potato and beer braised black beans, lettuce for a topping, and dirty sauce. No flavor in the sweet potatoes which were soggy and definitely not crispy, no flavor in the black beans which were also soggy, the lettuce was scant. ^ Both the dirty sauce and the secret sauce tasted nearly identical (the dirty sauce maybe slightly hotter, though definitely not sweet as noted). The staff was also kind of rude. When we didn't want a second round of drinks, the server actually whined, "You said you were thinking about it! And now I'm back over here and you don't want anything?! I only came back because you said you were thinking about it! C'mon!" Yikes. I'm not sure I'll be coming out of my way to visit ever again.

Yelp
We had dinner recently at Barrio in Portsmouth, NH- It was a busy Friday night, but the wait was not bad at all and we sat fairly quickly. The ambience here is more of a bar with a lot of college kids, however we ate much later than usual. The service was great- our server was very attentive. The food was fresh and came out quick. The special Crab taco was just OK, and needed a bit of work. All in all a good meal, and would recommend.

Yelp
This place reminds me of an upscale chipotle... food was cool, service was friendly. Drinks were ok. The spiked pineapple shot will sneak up on you.

Yelp
Showed up for lunch on Friday and got a table immediately but took 40 minutes to get food. Tacos were pretty good still. I was disappointed in the $3 "side of scrambled eggs" that was maybe one egg. I know they're expensive but this just seemed silly. (See photo)

Yelp
I frequent barrio about twice a month. The tacos are always great as they should be, you are designing them yourself after all. The service is always good, quick, and friendly. And lastly the ambiance is fun, as long as you are okay with a little louder environment especially later at night. The drinks are good too although I feel as though all the margaritas almost taste the same. All in all this is a great spot and if you like tacos I highly suggest coming in for a bite or two!

Yelp
Barrio is a must-stop when visiting Portsmouth! Portions are huge, food is fresh, and drinks are sneaky strong! 10/10 in my book!

Yelp
We really enjoy coming here. Second time with four or more of us. Great ques, tacos and margaritas. An excellent tequila assortment. Although I would say our server wasn't as attentive as one would like but she was better then average. Forgot multiple things throughout the meal and although she didn't act out right like she was better than us but at the same time she did. Casual atmosphere inside and outside seating as well as bar area seating.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying...I am probably the only person in the world who isn't a fan of Mexican food. My other half always complains that we don't ever go out for Mexican so we decided to give this place a try. Holy guacamole was I pleasantly surprised. Best tacos I've ever had. I really enjoyed making different styles/combos. The mimosa with tequila was an absolute delight. We sat the bar top and our bartender Jayden was very personable and her service was great. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the loud music that was not my style, new rap/hip hop. We went around 11:30am so I felt that "vibe" was more for the late night crew not the lunch crew.

Karen F.

Yelp
$70 for terrible food :(( Guac was good however, $16 for a tiny guac and a tiny salsa. Service was good, very upbeat until it wasn't. She brought out dark brown very over cooked hard shell corn tacos, I told her they were overcooked which anyone could see and she acted as she if I was imagining it. She did relent and agree to replace them after saying "they're all like that". She came back with two hard shell ground beef tacos that were not overcooked however they about a tablespoon of orange grease in each one and very little meat. My husband ordered the shrimp with a chipotle cream sauce and since he doesn't eat carbs he didn't get a taco shell. Apparently the shrimp do not come with anything, not sautéed onions or peppers, just very small shrimp. For $13. All and all, tiny portions, not prepared well, and quite pricey for what you get. With tip $85 !! Not worth it at all.

Yelp
Great experience. Food, drinks and atmosphere were all great. Max our server was awesome as well. Good time!

Yelp
A typical millennial taco place -- Very expensive for mid tacos. Water glass also tasted like it was just used to make a margarita.

Yelp
Looks like a nice spot! Seating indoor and out and a little outside downtown makes a great location. Unfortunately we never tried the food. There was no line and we were seated right away. Then we sat and waited...and waited...and waited. No one came to take our order for food or drinks or even to say hello at all. I completely understand and don't mind waiting when places are busy, but no one even said a word to us... except for "have a good night" after we got up to leave after sitting over 15 minutes. I'm sure we'll give it another shot. I'm hoping this was a fluke, but a disappointing experience nonetheless.

M M.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was friendly and helpful. Mixed drinks were weak and watery.

Yelp
Used to love this place, but they dont care very much about service. Was turned away at 1pm because they wouldnt open patio seating for our ESA dog. Lost respect.

Yelp
Been going to this location for over a year. In my opinion it's the best location. I normally gun for their chorizo option, which is saying something because typically chorizo is not my top choice of meat for a taco. The service is always prompt and friendly. The place seems cleanly and has appropriate sound levels. The only reason for deducting a star is solely because certain contents that you'd think would be included in the taco tend to be an up charge, but even then they're certainly not high prices. :)

Laura P.

Yelp
came on a sunday night it was one of the only places still open and was right outside our hotel. We had never been to a place where you order individual tacos so at first was confused. Our bartender was so nice about taking the time to explain how it works and recommend things that we should try. Everything came out amazing and he made really good drinks. I wish I remembered his name Matt I think. Will be back!

Yelp
Barrio. Here's what was interesting. Loved the tortilla chips and green salsa and the beer was nice and cold. However I created my own burrito bowl of sorts and the portion was extremely small for what they charge. Also some of the rice was undercooked. Otherwise cool atmosphere and good service.

Yelp
This place was a brilliant find!!!!! Went there late night for tacos and loved them! Definitely go with creating your own taco. They were absolutely delicious!

Steven C.

Yelp
For anyone saying their tacos are mid - you literally build your own. If you don't know what you will like, no one can help you. This place was amazing. Best tacos I've ever had for an inexpensive price. The bombshell tacos are the way to go. Magnificent.

Yelp
We like going to Barrios when we enjoy a walk in Portsmouth and want to enjoy a quick easy meal. Good chips. Drinks are ok

Yelp
Delicious food as always & our server Katherine was great today! Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Barrio in Portsmouth, NH has a little something for everyone. Easy to order, they have all the menu items on a pad of paper to either order from the chef's selection menu or build your own taco or bowl. I've been here 3 or 4 times before. The restaurant was crowded as it typically is with a line out the door of people waiting for tables. The ambiance is very loud. We were sitting at the bar next to each other and were practically yelling to hold a conversation. Service was very slow and although my plant-based tacos were delicious the side order of black beans were crunchy and bland. The sides portions are also small, only a small plastic condiment cup is what I was served.

James O.

Yelp
I've been here twice now. The cola-marinated steak is delicious -- I'd highly highly recommend getting it on a taco. My other tacos have been decent (and inexpensive) but not outstanding. Part of it may be the build-your-own style, there are so many options that it's a challenge to figure out what will work well together. Cocktails and margs are just alright but again pretty inexpensive. Service is fast, which I appreciated. Servers are all very polite and attentive. The atmosphere here is more like a bar than a typical mexican restaurant.

Jennifer A.

Yelp
We've given up ordering take out or DoorDash from this place. Every time we have, the order has been wrong or something has been missing. If you call, they'll tell you that they can't do anything since it was ordered through DoorDash...but if it's something that wasn't included but was missed by the restaurant, we've been told by DoorDash that they can't do anything about it since it was the restaurant's mistake. We used to absolutely love this place then they first opened, but now I notice that the tacos are made up mostly of the least expensive ingredients - for example if you order a shrimp taco with rice, you'll get maybe 3 shrimp and a TON of rice. And the taco bowls are tiny and overpriced. There are other options in the area that give you far more for the money. So unfortunately we've taken this one off of our list of places to visit.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
A cab driver recommended this place and I'm glad he did. They have the best chips and salsa. I started with that and added chorizo queso. It was pretty decent. I paired it with a margarita, very yummy and priced decently. Next we got tacos. They had some great choices for the build your own. I got the spicy ground beef, the pulled chicken and a marinated steak taco. I'm so full. I will definitely be back

Meg C.

Yelp
Best build your own tacos--so many options. They also have amazing queso and cocktails. I've always had a good experience here, but I've heard from others that the wait times and service can be bad.

Yelp
Last night travel I decided to try this hot spot Appearance : This place was hopping at the bar & food servers were moderately running food. The outside of the place looked amazing. It was all lit up. "Very Cool Vibe" Service - This was a TOGO order and it took 45 minutes to get my order once I arrived. I was there on time and I checked in upfront with the girls. They had me repeat my name four different times as I waited. I went up front counter a few times to check in to find out after being there for 30 minutes that the order was sitting and ready to go. 3 - Girls standing at hostess station could not remember one person's name they didn't even write it down instead they kept asking when I would go up and check in. I felt this was very unprofessional and they were not very organized.. FYI Nobody else is standing there with orders to go It was just me. There wasn't a line of customers to get in just me standing there. Time : The website said 15 minutes. If it's not going to be within 15 to 20 minutes, then the website should say busier than usual and given an accurate time slot . Order: I hiked back down to my vehicle to find my order was not only COLD but in the notes on the website, I said please no secret sauce because one of the items contained a secret sauce and the other one did not name out what type of sauce it was creamy, so I said please no Secret sauce, and no creamy sauce. Time : I hiked back down to the restaurant to return the inaccurate order, and as I was trying to tell them, what was wrong with it, three people intervened, and nobody was listening to me, but only to each other. I'm not sure if the hostess job is to check that but apparently not because I ended up not only with the Secret sauce and the aïoli sauce, which I was politely corrected later as they remade the order. However, in the end, the girl came out within five minutes with a new Order so she said and corrected me by stating that Secret sauce creamy is Aiola and it wasn't stated Aoila on the Order. either way the order was replaced so I go back to my car to find out that the street queso that I ordered was cold in fact, it wasn't just moderately cold. It was cold to the point where the corn and the cheese were still in the middle was stuck together like a ball of cheese Having already hiked to the place to have my order corrected I'm just very unhappy because I was not able to even eat this $21 bill + Tip for a taco and the queso that I could not even eat I'm super disappointed in this place. I would really like my money back !!! Parking : I was very lucky to get a parking a few blocks away, and I walked up to the end of the road it's a pretty busy area with a college town feel
google avatar

Fazil A.

Yelp
I ordered 3 tacos. 2 of them were wack. But one of them was amazing. The chicken taco. So you should order that one and skip the rest. Also don't listen to the hostess on what to order because they just keep picking things. Speak to a server or barman.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice however the food was not at all what a "taco" would be. The meat was not cooked how it should of have been. The flour tortilla wasn't thrown in the oven or the grill or even the microwave to have been warmed up. My husband ordered soft corn shells and they broke apart because the tortilla wasn't warmed. They were using grocery store packaged tortillas, which is fine but at least warm them up to not have them taste raw. When we asked questions to multiple servers the answer was "I'm not sure/ I don't know". Food is No Bueno.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I can't get enough, always fantastic all around. Get everything and anything you want, it's all good. Fresh, great flavor combos, just awesome.

Yelp
Quick stop for lunch went well, with friendly service and ample, tasty food. A basket of tortilla chips with salsa roja was a wise move, taking the edge off hunger while we studied the menu slash order form. My taco, El Jefe Loco, was a handful (and I've got big hands). With a guac side, the profusion of textures and flavors was inspiring, and plenty for lunch at a truly reasonable price. My companions were also pleased, though one had to ask again for a requested side. For that, for too loud music (it was noon, not clubbing hour), and for uncomfortable chairs I remove one star. This looks like a good spot for drinks. It's also linked to 3S ArtSpace, which is worth a swing through while visiting.

Yelp
We make it to Portsmouth once or twice a year and despite this place apparently being around for 5 years, I had no idea it existed. It is a bit off the downtown beaten path, but can still be walked to. It was very busy on a Saturday but we were able to get a few bar seats. Our bartender was wonderful, and honestly, probably the difference in us wanting go back for a 2nd try sometime (Not sure of her name, but dark hair, petit, probably later 20s). Despite being extremely busy, we rarely had to wait for anything and she absolutely knew her way around the bar and the menu. They had 3 menus going - a brunch, their regular taco menu, and also a 'build your own' taco kind of thing, all ordered by checking off items on a sheet. The bad: We all ordered various specialty tacos from the regular menu, and all 6 tacos, across all three people were cold. Not quite out of the refrigerator, but at least room temp if not colder. We still ate them as we were starving and they're all kind of tacobell tacos, with a hard and soft shell all in one, so they were strangely addicting, even though cold. At first we thought: are they supposed to be cold?? Is this a thing?? My completely uneducated best guess is that there being 3 menus, including encouraging people to create their own tacos, is too much for the kitchen to handle when busy. Would much prefer less offerings and warm tacos. We'll give it another shot sometime and go for the nachos; those have to be warm, right??

Kristina W.

Yelp
Addi was our server & she was wonderful! Very enthusiastic & on top of her game! Much appreciated. The tacos were good also. The wait time was long but we had a big party (they don't take reservations) & it was Friday night. The atmosphere was electric! Lots of art, history & people. Great night!

Oliver P.

Yelp
Even though the food is often cooked somewhat different from how I ordered, I always love it. Super tasty. Generally I like the staff here even if there are some unfriendly people. However... i came in today to pick up some food, super excited to get some tacos- but when I walk in even though there's always 5 girls at the host stand at all times- no one greets me or asks if they can help. One of them finally glares my way and I ask if I can please order out. She says nothing and gives me one of the check box menus. I seriously felt so unwelcome and when I was done checking the boxes off she ignored me and another girl had to take my order. I'm not one to write a review, especially a bad one, but this was absolutely ridiculous. If you schedule 5 girls to be at the host stand at all times at least hire friendly or kind ones I don't know if they're supposed to be waiting on people and I gave a 20% tip anyway but I'm feeling a bit fed up. It seems like none of them are actually there to work or that they need to work because they give the mommy and daddy's money vibe with the unfriendliness. I don't mean to be unkind but need to stress that if you're paying people to help other people PLEASE make sure they're doing that job. I feel much less likely to go into Barrio every time because of all the bad vibes I get from staff. Some of them are lovely but there's been too many times where they either don't greet, or don't check in at tables.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Walked in, was told I would be helped as soon as possible. Waited for 10 min while three more people told me they would be with me as soon as possible. Decided to sit at the bar. Food was good, but noticed the bartender was playing their own music behind the bar over the music that was playing for the restaurant. Really bugged me and my friend, just too much. Looked like one of the waitresses was wearing pajama pants. They were see through. Drinks were good and food was good.

Yelp U.

Yelp
My friends and I decided to dine in at barrio this past Sunday after hanging out downtown all day. We were expecting a wait being that it's a weekend in June, but it was rather slow and we were seated within 10 minutes and greeted by our server (Kathryn) not too long after to take our drink order. We tried to be courteous and asked about splitting checks before we placed any orders (since there were 9 of us) and right off the bat she sighed and told us she could... but it would be complicated. When she returned with our drinks, she handed out the wrong beer to two of us. We politely asked if she could get another since the wrong one had been sipped out of and she blatantly scoffed while grabbing the beer to swap it. Once we had all filled out our orders, we had to ask a host to bring our sheets back to the kitchen since our server was nowhere to be found and over AN HOUR later, we received our food from different employees. My friends and I are all Christians, so before eating each meal we all bow our heads and pray... mid prayer this server (Kathryn) loudly interrupted us asking how everything looked. I really don't mean to be a Karen. I've been a server for 4 years, so i'd say i'm pretty patient and understanding when dining in, but this service was just absolutely horrendous. The server being overall just very snarky while half her job was literally done by other employees and at the end of the night we were all charged an automatic 20% gratuity for the size of our group. Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious and we all thought so... but the others at the table said that service is always this way or worse!! Waitstaff just needs to get a grip!

Yelp
I came here for the first time on a Friday for lunch. It was busy, but the food still came out pretty fast. What stood out to me was that you can build your own tacos. This ended up being a great experience! DRINKS I highly recommend their margaritas. We tried Marigold and Barrio Paloma. Marigold was sweet but you can still taste the tequila. Definitely no watered down margaritas here. FOOD As for tacos, we got a few preselected taco combos (La Tierra, Camarone Agrietado) and made a few of our own. Their taco combos were disappointing to say the least. La Tierra was so spicy that it overpowered the taste of the meat. I liked the pan seared portobellos and caramelized onions though. Camarone Agrietado was awful. The shrimp tasted a bit off and the cilantro rice didn't have much flavor. With that being said, the tacos that we made ourselves were a lot better. I definitely recommend getting one of the specialty tortillas for an extra dollar. The Bombshell tortilla is genius! I love that they wrap soft tortillas sound the hard shell so you can get the crunch without the shell falling apart completely. The braised short ribs was our favorite choice for protein, followed by Coca-Cola marinated steak. They have a great selection of toppings and sauces so you're bound to put together a combo that's perfect for you!

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite place!!! Usually there's a long wait but it's definitely always worth it. Love the bombshell tacos and their queso, plus good drinks!

Yelp
The kiddos wanted tacos so we came here while passing through NH. Pros- Helpful staff Caters to kids with kid-specific menu/order form and kid activity placemats/ crayo House made purées to mix with bubblies (YES killer pomegranate mimosa) Quick with drinks/ house-made chips Dias de muertos theme to the interior Art gallery next door = awesome Cons: - Music too loud for a place that welcomes kids at 1pm (tho it's a Saturday so...?) either way too loud for kids ears. Decibels and damage, it's a thing that Barri might want to consider a quieter corner pocket offered to families. Or just make it obvious that kids are discouraged. Otherwise post grunge rock moms like me are going to bring our kids to places that scream tequila and tacos. - unexperienced front staff - it's just a bad idea to seat young children right next to the door

Yelp
Barrio was about the only Portsmouth restaurant open when I needed dinner a few weeks ago (I got there at 8 pm). Still scratching my head over naming a restaurant chain barrio - is no one aware of the negative connotation of the word? I ordered a Paloma and it was...fine. Served in a glass mason jar with no rim as I expected. The grapefruit juice wasn't freshly squeezed but it was a perfectly fine cocktail. What I was not expecting was a $15 bowl (and I live in LA so I'm used to overpaying for small portions of food) in a shallow cardboard bowl and a plastic SPORK as my utensil. Maybe, maybe this is a Covid vestige but honestly, if I am paying $50 for 2 drinks, chips and salsa, and a bowl, I think guests deserve metal cutlery. It was a young, hip crowd and probably a super fun place to go for drinks and nachos with friends, but it was not a great business traveler's dining spot.

Yelp
Drinks and ambiance were great but the food not so much. House chips with salsa roja were a little sour so not my favorite. Tacos came out completely cold. The spice rubbed chicken was extremely dry. The steak was somewhat better but they absolutely drowned it in the aioli (which I liked on its own but not in this large of a quantity). I think it's worth coming here for drinks if you're not too hung up on the food.

Yelp
This place has a great vibe! I feel like I am in SoCal even though it is January and I am in Portsmouth, NH. This little gem is right next to the new AC Marriot hotel I am staying at so it is super convenient! Barrio is part of the foodie haven that is Portsmouth. So far every restaurant I've eaten at here has been fantastic! I ordered to tacos to go as I have some work to do in the room. Service was friendly and quick even though the place was quickly filling up. I would recommend sitting at the bar. Again the service was very good! The margarita was the Casa Margarita made with El Jimador Respasado Blue Agave tequila and was very refreshing and tasty! But how are the tacos? What makes them good are the multiple ways you can order them! The kicker was with 2 tacos, chips and salsa, and a margarita it came to $14 at happy hour prices!!! Very highly recommended from this yelper!

Yelp
Another great cheap restaurant on the first night back in frozen Portsmouth, NH. Taco Tuesday specials were only during happy hour but since we came about 8:30pm at night, full price it was. Surprisingly, full price was not bad due to the side of the food. I got two huge tacos and coke for less than $20 with tax and tip included. Since it was my first time here, our waitress, Linda (She's awesome) went over the menu and how to order the tacos. She gave her suggestions and I went with most of them and it turned out great. Each taco was huge, the size of a big mac or bigger, full of vegetables, meat, cheese, and a whole bunch of goodness. I had to eat the taco, first normally then spoon up all the stuff that was left in the foil wrapper after. The meal came with chips and salsa any my table ordered a couple of queso sauce which was delicious. The service was great, Linda was fast and helpful and kept coming back to refill our drinks even though the bar was getting a bit busy. The only drawback was paying as we didn't split the bill sooner so had to separate everyone's order at the end. But other then that it was great late night dining experience and two thumbs up and double shaka for Linda, our waitress.
