The Best Tamales in Phoenix, 2021 - Eater Phoenix

"Barrio Queen is debuting its seasonal menu showcasing its tamales, which are legendary (and subject to copy-cat iterations). But this green sauce might be hard to recreate for even the most skilled cook — made with a special blend of tomatillos, garlic, paprika, onions, and poblano peppers. Tamales here are available either frozen or cooked with a selection of red or green sauces. Pick your favorite tamale — pork, chicken, or vegetarian options. A dozen tamales costs $36, while a half-dozen is priced at $20. Order online or at participating stores — at least 24 hours are needed for all orders." - Rudri Patel

This place was amazing the steak was cooked to perfection very tender and juicy. Food was hot. I asked for special toppings for them with no problems and no extra charge. The game was playing at the bar and old school music played on the background. Servers were friendly and attentive . Clean atmosphere would highly recommend.

Not only was the food amazing, Ricardo was one of the most hospitable servers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Knowledge about all the food and his suggestions were on point. Even made our guacamole at the table! We had the quesabirria tacos and the alambre beef tacos *chefs kiss*. My husband had a beer but I tried the el pepino loco margaritas, cumber in a margarita!? So good! Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere; a must if you are in the area!

5 Stars – I Came. I Ate. I Ascended. If I could give Barrio Queen more stars, I’d need a second Google account. This place isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a full-on culinary telenovela where your taste buds get the starring role. Let’s start with the drinks: the margaritas here? Dios mío. Smooth, citrusy, and just dangerous enough to make you text your ex and your grandma in the same sitting. Each sip felt like a sun-drenched vacation for my soul. Now, onto the appetizers, because I believe in starting strong: COCTEL DE ELOTE — This is not your sad, boiled-corn-from-a-fair situation. No, this is grilled corn royalty. Each kernel bathed in creamy aioli, dusted like it’s being tucked in by the Tajin fairy, with a blanket of cotija cheese so fine it should have its own Netflix special. Add lime and cilantro and you’ve got a spoonful of joy in every bite. ROASTED ELOTE — The whole cob version? It’s the Coctel’s more dramatic, extroverted cousin. The butter-mayo-cotija combo hits so hard you might make eye contact with a stranger and both start crying. In a good way. Then came the entrée: Camarónes al Mojo de Ajo — If shrimp had a red carpet event, these bad boys were it. Perfectly sautéed in a garlicky, herbaceous, slightly spicy sauce that whispered sweet nothings in my ear. The poblano peppers added a little sass, the chile de árbol brought the heat, and the rice and calabacitas were like the backup dancers who steal the show during the finale. A+. But wait. Dessert. Oh, sweet baby abuelita, dessert. The Three Leches Cake was a soft, creamy miracle that somehow made me believe in second chances and better decisions. Then came the Churros and Flan Trio — crispy on the outside, warm and doughy inside, dipped in sauces that made my eyes roll back. The flan? Silky. Smooth. Possibly illegal in some states due to how seductive it is. Service? Impeccable. Friendly smiles, fast refills, and not a single judgmental glance when I ordered three desserts for “the table” (it was just me). The place is spotless, stylish, and buzzing with good energy. If you’re looking for food that makes your heart sing and your belt weep — Barrio Queen is calling. Answer it.

Brad was awesome sauce. Went for happy hour before the movies. Never been. Perused the happy hour menu. Nice options wide selection. Started with a skinny margarita. Had peach. Delicious. But he was holding out. That mango Margarita is low-key fire had it skinny. I couldn't really tell what made it skinny, It tasted like a normal one which is a plus. Sometimes they don't. Got the Birria, wasn't quite the traditional birri tacos I'm used to but all the flavor was there. Didn't miss the crispy taco shell at all. Meat was tender and a flavor explosion. Had the pork tinga pablano pepper. I don't love peppers but it was good. It might not make sense but it's like stuffed peppers, you need the pepper but you don't got to eat it. It adds flavor. Pork was super good, scraped it all off the pepper. Tried it with the pepper but I just don't love them. I was expecting more jalapeno popper style. It was good just unexpected. Elote ribs are delicious just the right seasonings wish we had more. Pleasant banter with Brad, shared some stories. If I lived closer it'd be my happy hour spot. Also my New Mexican food place. Other place in town left a horrible taste in my mouth but Brad and this place have restored it. Rhymes with burrows don't go lol. They lost Nick.

Google

Google
The best tacos I have tasted in Arizona. I had three tacos, chorizo( my favorite), Al pastor (delicious), and pescado asado(also delicious)!! The chips and salsa were fresh and hit the spot. I ordered a pepino loco drink, and it was very tasty. This place is a must try!! The meat on all my tacos was very fresh, perfectly cooked, and it had a lot of flavor. Definitely will come back to try another dish.

We went for our friends birthday party and Ricardo was amazing. He had excellent customer service and recommendations. He is a true entertainer and you can tell he loves his job!

Yelp
Had a great meal & Ricardo was the best waiter we've had in months! What service! TY Ricardo for making it so enjoyable!

Yelp
Service efficient. Super colorful cute decor. My mole chicken enchiladas were delish. The salsa was perfect for me ( not spicy).

Yelp
Been to Barrio Queen several times. Ordered from them on ubereats too. This location is pretty huge, can seat a lot of people and has outdoor patio as well. Love seating out on the patio during the cooler months. Came here for dinner with a huge party, 13+ people and the service was good. The server was attentive, food and drinks came out shortly after ordering. We did have to ask for refills on chips and salsa. My go to are the street tacos and my favorite is the quesabirria tacos with consome. However, this time around the tacos came out not as hot. Probably because we had a huge group. We also ordered the classic gauc and the queso dip. For dessert, we ordered the churros and those came out hot and fresh.

Yelp
Pretty decent happy hour! Cheap drinks and okay food. The elote was definitely the best thing we ordered and the chips and salsa were also tasty. The tacos were not good. The shrimp taco had 2 small shrimps on it - and it was full price, it wasn't part of the hh menu so I guess that's just what you get. The carne asada and pibil tacos lacked flavor. Super meh overall. Service was average. Would definitely come back for cheap margs and chips and salsa if I was at Desert Ridge for hh, but I'd get dinner elsewhere.

Yelp
Sat on the patio in the shade. Great weather and they turned off the misters as soon as it got cooler. The patio is nice with large bulb lighting on the side and a nice tree in the middle. Ricardo our server was extremely friendly, probably came to the table eight times from start to finish checking on us and each time chatted for a bit. The chips were the old thick style, too heavy for me, although tasty. The standard salsa is very mild and then the habanero one is way too spicy. They need a Goldilocks version! The Molcajete Mixto was an enormous portion chock full of everything! Grilled shrimp, chicken, steak, panela cheese planks, cactus, sweet peppers, rice and beans. More than enough for two! We asked if I could get pork chile verde on my salad and they said yes! The pork was flavorful and it went well with the black beans, sautéed peppers and lettuce. The Paloma Hibiscus drink was well balanced and not too sweet. The BlackBerry mule was very strong and the peach drink was actually frozen but didn't state that on the menu. The jalapeño Margarita was not spicy or flavorful enough the first round and we asked for more heavy handed muddling and the second was much tastier! The caramel filled churros were very rich!although I didn't care for the cinnamon flavor in the thick caramel drizzle as it was grainy. The menu is very extensive, almost too big! We will likely return especially to try the Happy Hour menu.

Yelp
I stopped by last night for dinner and this place was busy! There was about a 30-45 minute wait. Usually that is a good sign that the place is good! So my family and I waited - our server MJ (MaryJane) was super sweet! She was attentive and awesome! The ambiance in here is nice, I like the vibes! Super artistic and nice paintings. The food was yummy! I got the steak fajitas with chorizo beans and rice. My mom got the steak and chicken fajitas with chorizo beans and rice. My mother also got their soup the Caldo Tlalpeno, she loved it and said it was very good, my grandma also got the soup and she Loved it too! The fajitas were yummy! I loved it and so did my mom and grandma, it smells so good and it comes sizzling to the table. They also give you chips and salsa at the table to start off with complimentary. The spicy salsa they have (you have to request it) is REALLY spicy so if you like hot, ask your server for it. I also got dessert, their churros, it was super yummy! It has Carmel inside of them, YUM! It also comes with vanilla ice-cream.

Yelp
It was fine. Big production to make the guacamole but it was rather bland. Not much flavor and zero spice. The salsa was excellent though. Fajitas were solid; nothing special but not bad. Son got the margarita flight and they were okay. Parents had the fish tacos and shrimp tacos, both were a bit salty. Service was solid if a bit slow at time.

Yelp
Barrio Queen has a really good happy hour which includes street tacos 2 for $5. On Tuesday all their street tacos are 2 for the price of 1. The regular menu street tacos are especially good because they include vegetables which give the tacos a variety of textures and flavors. There's a different menu for happy hour which seems to be just meat and sauce. Those are good, too, and a bargain at 2 for $5. There's a nice number of happy hour drink specials including $5 Margaritas. We Sat at the bar where the service was terrific and the conversation was lively. The bar area was full of Day of the dead decor. They had some items for sale. We got a colorful skull for Dan's sister.

Yelp
When in Arizona, get Mexican food, right? Let me preface that yes, I know I'm in Scottsdale. People told me to drive away for good Mexican food. But, I didn't want to stereotype. I had to stay close to Mayo Clinic and the Yelpers gave good stars, too, so I folded and listened to them. And just like before, I listened to them. And I have regrets. I am sorry, but while the decor and atmosphere is quite trendy and on-point with its open-air seating, the food is Bland AF. Birria meat is super salty and the veggies that color the meat tops were mealy (tomatoes) and wilted (cilantro). Shrimp taco was questionable upon first bite (not fishy, but texture was offly soft, almost like its been defrosted for too long or inadequately). Tomatoes and cilantro were so old they lacked taste in the free salsa. Elote was not grilled on the cob (only the husk) and lacked any spice. The free chips and salsa chips were probably the best, but even that, I didn't finish. One star because It was cheap: $20 for a drink, 2 tacos, elote, and the (free) chips and salsa. I sat at the bar, and service was fine: she checked just enough and was friendly enough. It wasn't busy at peak lunch time, though I did see some commuters and/or older people there. Maybe an off day based on the reviews, or maybe it serves a particular clientele? What ever it is, it was subpar.

Yelp
The video is pretty good since it is slow cooked and it is not too fatty, but it is quite savory as it has a lot of sauce in it. I would recommend getting the Aztec enchiladas. In general, the portion sizes are huge for what you pay for. In addition the steak nachos is pretty generous on the steak. I was not wowed by the churros, but they are a good sweet treat. The decor is so cute. The restaurant gives off traditional Mexican celebration and dia de los Muertos vibes. I love the cups at the front--at this time, they are probably $12, and they make good gifts! Overall, very cute. Service staff was standard but they work efficiently as there are a good amount of people at the restaurant on a Thursday night.

Yelp
I haven't had service this bad in years. They sat us at a table with no silverware and no waitress in site for the first 10 minutes. We had to flag somebody down & Ask them to please find our server. No one ever came back for refills, it took almost an hour to get our food. And our waitress seemed more concerned about closing up the restaurant, & getting things put away for the night instead of paying attention & bringing us any refills or our food. Very frustrating, especially when you have a little baby who is getting impatient and tired. Tip: learn to be more attentive to your tables, even if you are in training. Taking an order and never going back is just terrible service.

Yelp
I had gone to this spot several years ago and had a really good memory of the food, however this time it was not the case. I went with my mom on a Tuesday night and it wasn't too busy. At first the hostess sat us at this extremely large table even though there were only two of us so we asked to move. We had to wait for about 20 minutes while they cleaned a table and when they finally sat us the table was still all sticky. We asked them to bring a towel to clean it and they misunderstood us and thought we wanted to move again so while they were discussing they proceeded to seat three large groups around us and take their orders. When they finally came to tell us there were only high top tables to move to it had been another 10-15 minutes. Finally we got them to bring over a towel but they seemed annoyed. Chips and salsa were delivered finally and the chips were stale, salsa was average. I had veggie tacos which were fine but nothing exceptional, my mom had cheese enchiladas and they were terrible -- the sour cream tasted expired. Also had the tableside quac which should have been much better than it was -- it wasn't terrible but also wasn't amazing -- not worth the $18!! I also had a skinny margarita -- it was fine, again nothing to write home about!! The ambience is fine but nothing too special. Overall was not impressed and will never go there again!!

Yelp
Beautiful Desert Ridge location. Servers are friendly and beautiful. My date's beer was forgotten. I love both inside decor and festive outdoor dining. Freshly fried tortilla chips. I love the chipotle salsa. It was not too spicy but oh so tasty. The quesadilla appetizer was rolled. It was meh. I wish I got the chile verde pork. It came in a cast iron and was super duper hot. Yummy!

Jacqueline D.

Yelp
We had a party of 25 adults for a birthday dinner. Our server Ricardo T was amazing! He separated our bill 13 ways. Our food, drinks and desserts were perfect and he was super friendly and very organized. We will definitely be back. Thank you!

Yelp
Good Mexican food here, not too heavy on the stomach and good size servings, lots of choices! My favorite is the guacamole which is prepared and served fresh at your table. This guacamole is very authentic. They also have the best chips, tortilla chips serve warm, and salsa. A good children's menu is available. The service is awesome. They pay a lot of attention to you from the moment you walk in and the food comes in pretty quickly. Love the decor on this place very Mexican and very artsy. It's quite entertaining. This Mexican restaurant is definite must try! Oh, and don't forget the margarita and they have a full-size bar as well.

Yelp
It's a great atmosphere. Open, airy, well lit with plenty of inside and outside seating. Great menu and drink selection. Waitstaff is mostly friendly, just not consistent from employee to employee. We each had a poblano based dish and both presented well in a solid average size, but necessarily generous in size. Service was good and when you ask, prompt. It is in a great location along with plenty of other retail options to choose from.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Much better experience than yesterday's at the Scottsdale location. Sat at the bar for happy hour. Had a really good margarita and a tasty small plate called pork tinga poblano. Service was as good as could be expected with just one bartender. Nice bar atmosphere with good conversation to be had.

Yelp
I've had numerous friends recommend this place to me if I wanted casual and decent Mexican food in the area and I recently had the chance to try them out. After looking over the menu, we decided to order the Barrio guacamole with less jalapeños, to share, and a trio of tacos each as our main entree. We really enjoyed the amount of pomegranate seeds that was in the guacamole. However, we thought that the guacamole overall was way too salty for our preferences. For my trio of tacos, I decided to get one al pastor, one camaron asado, and one camaron taco with a side of rice. Unfortunately, the al pastor taco was way too salty for my liking. The two shrimp tacos on the other hand, were both enjoyable, nothing amazing, but decently solid tacos. Overall, the service was friendly, not too fast, not too slow. The ambiance was quite charmingly casual. They had fun music playing, but it wasn't too loud where we couldn't have a comfortable conversation with each other.
google avatar

Matt Z.

Yelp
Excellent food! You could easily fill up on chips and salsa; the salsa has a kick but is packed with flavor. I got the taco trio with the cochinita pibil, carne asada & chile relleno, and the mar y tiera (surf & turf). All the tacos were fantastic. My son got the barrio pollo burrito and finished it all. Our server was very attentive and kept our water filled. Highly recommend the roasted elite for the appetizer.

Yelp
Enjoyed our visit to Barrio Queen. Perhaps my favorite thing about visiting this place is the stylish decor and ambiance. Whether you're dining indoors or out, it's a great experience and place to spend your time. The fajitas I ordered were good - nothing particularly notable, but enjoyable. The service was also good - just what you'd expect on a casual Sunday evening.
google avatar

Bridget S.

Yelp
Came for their happy hour deals, but stayed for everything else. The inside and outside offers plenty of seating and it's super spacious which is great. Even though I initially wanted their happy hour tacos, the enchiladas were calling my name and they were delicious. We wanted guacamole with our chips but we could only see the table side quac on the menu, and our waitress was already hustling around to enough tables that we didn't want her to get caught up doing a table side guac for us (since we could see she looked a little flustered whipping one up for the table next for us). Regardless, salsa was great, and they offer a great variety of other food and drinks as well
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
This was a pretty decent place. I liked the outdoor patio area. They said if I sat inside the wait would be over an hour on a Tuesday night at 5:30pm. So we got seated right away on the patio. We got the mojohete bowl which was pretty decent. There were not many beans in it and odd to see all the rice. There was something that look like chicken in like inch wide by 3 inch long squares. I could not tell if it was tofu, chicken or fish.. lol. I asked one of the bus service gals for a strew and she gave it to me and did not even smile at all. Overall it's not a bad place. The menu is black beans this and black beans that. No refried beans at all.
google avatar

Lori A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere here with the Day of the Dead theme decor. My husband got the vegetarian burrito. He said it tasted good, but we all agreed it was very small with not much filling. I ordered the 2 vegetarian tacos which tasted ok. The tortilla they came on was very small and thin and fell apart. Salsa was good, but chips were super thick. We only ate a few chips. Most all of our food was very salty. Our server was for sure having a bad day or was an unhappy person. Sorry, I usually don't leave anything less than a 4 or 5 star, but when you're paying Barrio Queen's prices you expect a little more.
google avatar

Palak S.

Yelp
The ambience and atmosphere are great. It's also kid friendly! The quality of the food was okay, it wasn't super flavorful. We ordered enchiladas, guacamole, and elote. The portion sizes are good. We also got the margarita flight, which was unique and good! It wouldn't be my first choice for Mexican food as there are many more options in the Phoenix area!
google avatar

Cori D.

Yelp
We were not impressed by this place and would not recommend. So overhyped. Food took exactly an hour to get. The table side guac is overpriced, a very small portion and bland. The carne asada was so over cooked and dry it was white inside. Probably should have stuck with the tacos. The good: Margarita was good and the chips were fresh and warm.
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
Reservations needed for anything after 6 on a weekend because this place was packed. Drinks and food were pretty good, the spicy cocktail was a unique taste I'd recommend. The elote (mexican street corn) was the best thing we had. Make sure to eat it with the chips as the extra salt really perfects it. All the meats in the burrito and tacos are clearly marinated all day, they're incredible. Sauces leave a lot to be desired. I would recommend drinks and apps only, but even with just those you'll have a good time. Would come back.
google avatar

Charles D.

Yelp
This was our date night and my wife had two Mexican restaurants in mind. She left it up to me to decide and I chose this restaurant because of the delicious food. We arrived around 5:30 PM and had to wait 35-45 minutes because there was a private event occupying the other room. After waiting's about 40 minutes, we sat down and ordered our drinks and also placed our order. Each of us ordered 3 tacos. It was the perfect amount of food. The fried tortilla chips were thick and scooped the salsa without snapping in half. The server was friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was great. You can actually hold a conversation without screaming.
google avatar

Yelp
Just AWESOME!!!!! The guac is amazing and so are the tacos. Chicken fajitas were great as well
google avatar

Yelp
I'd come here just to smell the place but also I die for the chips and salsa. Homemade and never enough. I love that I can throw on my pretty summer dress or go in workout wear ...just depends if it's date night or lunch with the ladies. The listers are on outside, so I also love that outdoor dining is still an option. I ordered off the summer specials and went with the watermelon and chicken salad. You pay $6 extra for the chicken but the meal was $20, so still under my $25 budget. Flavor for days on this salad and I think I ate pretty much every lettuce leaf. I'm not a fan of walnuts and forgot to order without them, but that was on me. Service is always exceptional and everyone's good at checking in on the table, so no staff complaints. Also...do they all have to be so stinking pretty?
google avatar

Ken R.

Yelp
For only the second time since it's been open I went to this restaurant. My first experience wasn't the best, after being served an order of table-side made guacamole that was so salty you could not eat it. However this time I had lunch with a colleague, and ordered two different kinds of street tacos, all of which were delicious. Also the chips and salsa to start the meal were very good as well. Our service was fast our server was friendly. I will always prefer a hole in the wall type Mexican food restaurant over a fancier one like this. However I would definitely come back to Barrio Queen

Yelp
We dined here with a party of 9 while on vacation in the area. Everything about this place was excellent. Josh took great care of us. Drinks: I had the People's Margarita which is one of their specialty Margaritas. It comes on the rocks with pineapple juice. Added a Grand Mariner float and it was Killer. Also, had a Dos XX Amber that hit the spot. Food: I ordered a Quesabirrias taco,Carne Asada Taco, and a Fish Taco with rice and beans. All extremely delicious. We ordered a few appetizers including the tableside guacamole which was amazing. My kids enjoyed their food as well. Overall our experience here was pretty much perfect. Great service, food, drinks, and atmosphere. I would return here again the next time I'm in the area without a doubt.
google avatar

Kassandra S.

Yelp
This place never disappoints! I love their margaritas. It's a must every time I come. Plus, their servers always do a good job. Today I tried something new, fajitas. I typically don't order these anywhere because they're never as good as they smell. These ones were amazing!!! Such great flavor, the meat was so tender, and I was so happy. It came with a side of rice and beans. Ofcourse, their rice is good. I think it's something I'll come back and have again. I actually split it for lunch with my husband & it was perfect for both of us.
google avatar

Yelp
Customer service, ambiance, and food were very good. Freshly prepared guacamole is an option. Busy for dinner. I'd recommend a reservation if possible. I'll keep it on my list of places to visit whenever I'm in the area.

Yelp
Its 100 degrees in Phoenix today and the have all the doors open. Its hot in here and there are flys everywhere. WTF

Yelp
My kid got married on Friday at Moon Valley Justice Court, and we decided to go celebrate at " Barrio Queen." They have a really great Happy Hour and is conveniently close to the Court house. It was very busy and obviously a very popular place. It took a while to get seated, but once we did, we were quickly greeted by our waiter. I love the decor with artwork in the "Day of the Dead" theme they have some great $5.00 Happy Hour food and drink specials, and we got a little bit of everything. We had to start with the tableside guacamole $15.00, which has fresh pomegranate as one of the ingredients, which was a refreshing touch. The food was flavorful and fresh. We pretty much enjoyed everything, and the 5 of us dined for under a $100 and amazing deal. We plan to definitely return to enjoy more of their menu. If you are looking for a "Happy Hour" spot, this is the place available M-F from 3pm-6pm.

Yelp
We tried the restaurant on a Friday evening with some friends. The decor is beautiful and represents Mexican culture which was really cool. We ordered multiple dishes but I picked the carne asada enchilada with more rice and no beans. I also chose a mocktail made out of lime, lemon, and passion fruit. One thing I noticed while browsing the menu was that they had quite a bit of dishes with chorizo and alcohol. This made my choices pretty limited. Prior to getting our food, we enjoyed some chips and salsa. The chips was fresh and crunch and the salsa had the right amount of heat. The service was great. They were able to take good care of our big table (of 11 adults and 3 kids) and made sure the dishes all came out together. The dish that I picked was not my favorite. I would give it a 3. The drink however was superb, it scored a 5! Overall, prices were ok and we enjoyed our experience. We would likely return to this location but I will order something different next time.

Yelp
This is a must stop when in Phoenix. Happy hour menu has several amazing options and hefty portions. The roasted elote is one of my favorites (picture included of happy hour portion) along with trying several different street tacos (must try: ca?casabirrias), although all have never disappointed. No matter what you try, make sure you order the World Famous barrio guacamole made fresh table side, with fresh pomegranate seeds. The service has never disappointed, the food always great and never a wait to be seated.

Yelp
Haven't been here in awhile, but made a quick stop here for happy hour/taco Tuesday. Three kinds of tacos were 2 for $5. My chicken was supposedly white meat, but still not sure. The corn tortillas needed to be doubled and tacos were nothing special Elote ribs were interesting and pretty good flavor on the four pieces. $5 margarita was good, but not potent.

Yelp
I believe Barrio Queen is a chain Americanized Mexican place in the Phoenix area. There were several locations when we searched for them online.. we went to the one on Tatum, which was located inside a little shopping center in the burbs. Barrio was huge!! With both indoor and outdoor seating! We had a fairly large party and decided to sit outside for some fresh summer air. Wrong decision! It got super hot!!! Especially after all the Mexican food. The tableside guacamole was made to order.. you guessed it, tableside! The addition of pomegranate was a bit different but was a good mix to traditional guacamole! The Queso flameado was a win! Cause who can go wrong with melted cheese and chorizo?! The only downside was that they only gave us 3 tiny tortillas to go with all that Queso. They specialize in tacos but I ordered the Cochinita Pibil cause it was marked "award winning@ and it didn't disappoint. The meat was tender and the sauce was fantastic! I think everyone enjoyed their food.. though the margaritas were super sweet and didn't contain very much alcohol. The Tres Leches also came in a jar and was lacking the milk drenched cake cause it was filled with cream. A good place to have a dinner for a large party, with a great ambiance and nice decor. Food was also pretty delicious for a chain restaurant, though you can't go in with very high expectations.

Yelp
I used to go to the now closed Barrio on 16th St. and was never disappointed. This corporate spinoff from one of the former owners of Barrio makes it just another Mediocre Mexican food chain restaurant. The only thing I found nice about this restaurant were the interior wall designs and nice outdoor patio seating. I went during lunchtime and the restaurant was only 1/3 full, but it took our server 10 minutes to get water to us, another 15 minutes to come back to get our orders, and she never returned to check on us once we received our food from a food runner. The requested sliced jalapenos were missing. The chips and salsa that are a complementary starter were mediocre at best. The chips were fresh and crisp. If you like tomato sauce with a quarter of a teaspoon of chili powder mixed in, this is your salsa. The cup of posole I received was edible, but I've had better out of a can. The chorizo refried beans were flavorless and bland and I'm not sure if there was chorizo in it. I also ordered their version of a Paloma and it was not balanced and far too sweet to complement the food. Barrio Queen is OK for tourists that don't care for spicy food. For those of us that enjoy a tasty and spicier meal, I suggest finding a Mexican food place with an Irish last name.

Yelp
It's a nice family friendly place. Went there today for lunch. It was my second time eating there, and it did not disappoint! I ordered the Cochinita Pibil and hubby ordered the Carne Asada Torta and both were delicious. Their complementary chips and salsa are so good, and the service was great! We sat outside, and there were a bunch of birds eating from leftover plates, and we thought that was amusing.

Yelp
Atmosphere was nice! The portions were very big and definitely filling. We received our food pretty quickly. Their Jamaica drink was pretty good. It's a good staple AZ restaurant to add to your bucket list.

Yelp
I usually have no faith in tex mex food, but decided to give this place a try since I had a gift card. Got it to go, but ambience looked nice, appreciate the live bolero band & the molcajete/guac station. I got the award winning cochinita pibil and that was one of the most trash food dishes I've ever had from a high standard place. 95% of the pork was fat. Service is probably nice but this place reminded me why I hate Tex mex

Yelp
I used to come here for their tacos only but now have been really interested in the other parts of their menu. The inside of this location is cute and I love the artwork! The salsa and chips to start the meal was so good I usually don't love salsa as much as I loved theirs. We got 3 tacos, birria grilled cheese (omg so good), and a chicken bowl.

Yelp
Food: 4.5/5 Drinks: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Upon our arrival we were seated immediately without a problem, as busy as it was during lunch time. We were greeted by our amazing waiter Ricardo, who was very knowledgeable in all the menu items. He made sure we received anything we needed in a quick and timely manner. Also, provided some laughs as a great bonus. Will be coming back.

Yelp
Let's start with the good stuff: Barrio Queen knows how to throw down in the kitchen. Their fajitas combo came out sizzling and smelling like a fiesta I was personally invited to--juicy, flavorful, and loaded with all the right fixings. The Arizona burrito? A hefty, glorious creation that should honestly have statehood at this point. And the rice and beans? Classic, comforting, and exactly what you want on your plate. Now, let's talk drinks--because no proper Mexican feast is complete without a little liquid magic. The Don Margarita? Smooth, strong, and delicious. But then... there was the service. At first, everything was going fine. The restaurant wasn't packed but the moment a big group walked in, our waiter suddenly pulled a Houdini act. Gone were the frequent check-ins. Gone was the attentiveness. It was like we got benched in favor of the starting lineup. By the time we were done, he didn't even bother asking if we wanted dessert. No "Would you like to try our flan?" No "How about some churros to round things out?" Nope. Just a bill, dropped like a mic. I was sitting there, fork in hand, still contemplating whether I wanted to end my meal with something sweet, and he had already mentally clocked out. So, would I go back? Absolutely. The food is bomb, the margaritas are dangerously good, and I'd love another shot at trying their desserts.
