So let’s talk about this place. The atmosphere has definitely been improved. The place is a lot cleaner than just a year or two ago. The bathrooms are clean. No more mismatched lighting. It looks up to par with any modern restaurant.
Our server was excellent. She was cheerful and she checked in on us often and we appreciate her efforts.
Now, the food. There are positives and negatives.
We ordered a variety of tacos and the fried yucca with a cheese sauce.
The fried yucca was pretty good, cheese sauce was fine.
The tacos:
The meat, seasoned beautifully.
Every other component of the taco were kinda disappointing:
The plates are now much smaller.
The meat portion was small, the queso fresco was given as a side instead of in the taco and the amount provided was paltry in comparison to before where it would have been covering the taco.
The previously provided grilled pepper / onion bulb is nonexistent.
The salsa verde was not spicy, in fact, it was borderline sweet (the server provided us with a Peruvian spicy salsa later, but it wasn’t the same depth of the previous salsa verde). She did explain that other Latinx can’t take the heat, but I think that’s unfortunate.
Also gone is the complementary chips and salsa.
So there you go, Barraco has traded authenticity for nicety. Adelitas had its fair share of negatives, but their tacos were as authentic as they came.
Barraco is still a good restaurant, but it’s now a run of the mill restaurant. I think they’re just casting a wider net.
It’s sad for us though. We loved the hole in the wall authentic Mexican joint.
