Stopped in for a bite to eat with my mom, sister, and my niece... Monthly, we have our "Making Memories" Lunches/Dinners, as it's important to make memories.... time is so short, but I digress.
I have eaten at Barrow's, well before Hurricane Katrina, when they were in the corner near the Earhart Expressway, iykyk. But this isn't a history lesson, so if you want to know the history, feel free to Google them.
Upon entering the Westbank location, i spoke with the hostess and advised her that I had three more in my party, and they were on the way. She said she would wait for a few more people in my party to arrive and then she would seat me, that's totally fair, no need to seat partial parties, this is the industry standard and I get it. And true to form, she did exactly as stated.
We were seated at our table and asked if we wanted water to which we said yes. Gotta stay hydrated. We loved the ambience. Nice and spacious plenty of four top and two top tables. Straight-ahead, when you walk in, is an oyster bar and to the left is the main dining room to the right, looks like another dining room area, that could be used for a private party.
We ordered our food, of course catfish was ordered, my niece had popcorn chicken nuggets with french fries, I had a salad, my sister ordered the ribs with a side salad and my mother had gumbo and the infamous Barrow's Catfish. My salad was good, I should've ordered a protein with it, my niece said the popcorn chicken nuggets were great, she even squeezed them so I could see how juicy there were... and coming from a 9-year old, that speaks volumes... of course the catfish was delicious, so says my mom and per my sister the ribs were ok.
I found the staff to be accommodating and available. Loved the uniform attire, I mean it's expected, but not all the time is it the case.
Upon completion of our meal, I ordered takeout for a friend, she loves this place... however, there was some confusion with the takeout order, as I added creamy spinach in addition to the Shrimp Platter. Once in my car, Holy Spirit quickened me to open the container, especially since there was confusion with the order, I cared not about the potato salad, but I did advise I wanted fries... and they were missing. I went back inside to ask of the fries, another young lady said they were out of fries and were awaiting a truck... I wish I would've known that they were out of french fries, would've asked for a substitution.
The drinks were great. We had strawberry lemonade and a raspberry lemonade, they came in big, big tall glasses that were worthy of the price tag.
I would return... However, I would make sure before leaving that my takeout order plate has all of the fixings that I am requesting; but I do understand the nature of the business and sometimes food items don't arrive as they should.
Love that this is a locally, Black owned and operated family business. They are really doing their thing in the restaurant world and continuing the Legacy of the original owner operator of Barrow's Catfish House.
