Where to Find Greater Boston’s Best Momos | Eater Boston

"Cambridge’s Base Crave, sibling to Mitho in Winchester, leans Nepali with dishes like momos and choila, although the restaurant’s stated cuisine is “fusion gourmet...cuisines from all around the world.” Base Crave serves its momos steamed, with a choice of chicken, vegetable, paneer and spinach, lamb, buffalo, or wild boar filling. (The vegetable filling is vegetarian.)" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

OMG… I was in the Cambridge MA Fresh Pond area and randomly stumbled upon Base Crave — hands down the tastiest food I’ve ever had. The flavors of the Tarkari Curry Lamb and Mushroom completely blew my mind! The place feels upscale, super clean, and the service was friendly. Great vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of street parking. Can’t wait to go back and try more dishes!

Google
Such a lovely quaint restaurant. The inside was neat and clean with quiet jazz played in the background. The food was fantastic. Everything was well-seasoned with a nice mix of spices that made each dish pop. There were many gluten-free and vegetarian options too. The host also informed us that the restaurant did not use gmo products and artificial colorings so those with such concerns can rest easy :) We ended up trying the jeera chicken, basil shrimp, chicken & mushroom takari curry, chicken momos with tikka masala, and garlic naan. The jeera chicken came with crispy puffed rice which was really fun to eat. The garlic naan was very soft and went well with the tikka masala. For drinks we tried the strawberry lassi and rupee lager. The lassi was delicious, not too sweet, had great fruity flavor mellowed by dairy with a touch of spice. The rupee was a nice smooth beer that was not very hoppy or bitter and paired well with the food as advertised. So happy to find another local gem. Looking forward to trying their other dishes and lassi flavors.

Google

Google
The staff is welcoming, the service is quick and attentive. The food is good. Don't miss the lentil soup. The dining room is attractive, the seating is comfortable, and the tables aren't squished together. Best of all, no TV blaring so it's easy to have a conversation with your dining companions.

Lovely experience! Will comeback to try more of the menu.

The food is very tasty and the people there are friendly! Many vegan options.

Google
My wife’s work orders meals for their employees from Base Crave so she wanted to bring me here. It was super tasty and had lots of flavors. Peaceful atmosphere and pleasant servers. I can’t wait to return. Lots of gluten free and vegetarian options. We went back a second time. Another great experience.

Google
By far the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I was sitting outside and brought my own plate inside when it looked like it was going to rain. The waiter kept interrupting me, asking if I was done with my meal—despite me clearly saying I was still eating. He came back again to ask what I was doing with the food, which made me feel rushed and uncomfortable. I asked for a box and got ready to leave. After signing for my meal and leaving no tip (due to the poor service), the waiter came back to ask me for his tip. As I walked out, another man aggressively approached me, also asking where the tip was. They were very aggressive in nature and made the entire experience even more uncomfortable. As for the food: bland and overpriced. The momo was extra chewy with barely any vegetable filling, and the basil tofu—at $22—had no flavor and came with basic, under-seasoned vegetables. I do not recommend this place. Poor service, aggressive behavior, and flavorless food—definitely not worth your time or money. I would have preferred to give this place a ZERO in all categories.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients cooked to order. Extraordinary, multiple layers of flavours revealed through delicate spices. Truly a different culinary experience. Worth the trip - worth finding. Interior of restaurant is lacking. And it can get loud as there is no acoustic treatment. Rudimentary. Focus on the food and you will be a happy person, Not inexpensive - but absolutely worth it.

Yelp
My partner and I got vegetable momos, eggplant basil paneer curry, wild boar mushroom stir-fry chili, and garlic butter naan - TASTE: 5/5 - so flavorful across the board. The vegetable momos were well seasoned, the paneer was satisfying w a slightly spicy tomato-based curry sauce (wish there was more eggplant though), and the wild boar was tasty. Would come back to try more TEXTURE: 4/5 - the steamed momos were tender, and we enjoyed the crunch of the naan; great contrast to soak up the sauces of both entrees PRICE: 4/5 - total came out to $70, higher than we expected SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - came hungry, devoured everything, and left satisfied SERVICE: 4/5 - we walked in at 12:30pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Our waiter asked how spicy we'd like our dishes, on a level of 1-10, and our food started coming out 10min later ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 - a warm, inviting space inside. So glad we had the opportunity to eat Nepali food! PARKING: 4/5 - parked right on Huron Ave at a free street spot

Yelp
Always reliable. And they will use good oils if you ask for it. It is my go to when in the area.

Yelp
Very flavorful, nice folks serving delicious meals. Went for lunch, very clean and not crowded. Will be adding Base Crave to the list of local Cambridge favorites.

Yelp
Superb food - unique tastes, highest quality ingredients, prepared perfectly. The grilled cashew haddock and vegetables were so satisfying I only wanted to eat half and am looking forward to the rest and most of the impossibly fluffy rice for lunch. Best mango lassi I ever had. Also needed to leave room for the blueberry haluwa dessert.

Yelp
Base Crave basically makes us crave Nepali flavors. I've only tried a handful of other Nepali places, but this place does it great! I like the spices they use in their dishes, especially the rosemary. The spicy rating system out of 10 is interesting. I think 6 is the sweet spot, but I've tried 5 and 8 too. 8 is medium death for me. Also, the lamb momos are tasty. The portion sizes are good, though the prices are on the high side. Service is fine but could be better about bringing water (though maybe I was chugging because 8). The interior is spacious and clean and the decor is nice. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Omg soooo good I want to come back and try all the vegan dishes and all the levels of spiciness. Gundruk Soup! Get it! Vegetable Mo Mo! Get it! Can't wait to come back for more. Great food, friendly service. Get ready for a flavor experience you will love.

Yelp
Nice little eatery. Good food/good service. We were looking for a gluten free lunch menu and they had great choices Can get noisy

Yelp
Awesome flavorful food in a cute family owned restaurant. I've tried a lot of different appetizers and entrees and you cannot go wrong. The stir fry chili plates are my favorite. I love how they allow you to decide on the spice level from one to ten. I've tried both seven and eight and they are indeed spicy and not for those who are not a fan of spicy. I will go up to a nine or ten on my next trip.
google avatar

Yelp
The lamb bhuteko was so flavorful. I'd never heard of bhuteko before or had puffed crispy rice but it was all excellent together. There was a deliciously strong cumin taste to the lamb, along with other yummy flavors.

Yelp
I am visiting from out of town, and I saw this place had good reviews. I had the Basil Eggplant Paneer. Since I don't eat rice, they gave me extra vegetables instead. What can I say... It was magnificent. The service is excellent. The decor is modest, but the food is outstanding. Will definitely be back again. Grateful to the chefs and servers. Wonderful experience. Highly recommend

Yelp
Phenomenal Food! It's nice to have restaurants that offer cuisine unlike the norm and Base Crave, a Nepalese establishment, does just that. We were looking for a restaurant that would not be crowded and on the quiet side to celebrate my father's birthday. My brother in law came up with Base Crave and it turned out to be a great idea and a wonderful evening. Even my nephew and niece (ages 10 and 12) would agree - and its sometimes hard to satisfy kids. For appetizers, we ordered a couple of Mo Mo platters, Gundruk Soup, Garden Salad. For mains we ordered the Chicken & Mushroom Curry, Chicken Mushroom Stir Fry, Grilled Basil Shrimp, and the Chicken Tikka Masala along with orders of garlic and plain naan. Everything we ordered was delicious! It's hard to pick a favorite, but I really enjoyed the Grilled Basil Shrimp and the Chicken Tikka Masala (which tasted slightly different than North Indian Chicken Tikka). Overall, a delicious meal.

Yelp
Met friends for dinner at Basr Crave. The food was absolutely spectacular. We ranged from 4 spicy to 10 spicy on the dishes, all were perfect. The Gundruk Soup is fabulous, don't miss it. All the Mo Mo's were excellent (I preferred the lamb). We all shared our entrees, the Wild Boar Ribs were exquisite, the Chicken and Mushroom Tarkari Curry was fantastic, the Chicken Stir fry Noodles, and Grilled Chicken stuffed with Panner and Spinach was the best of the four. Service was excellent, pricing was reasonable, a really solid value for amazingly flavorful food.

Yelp
The blueberry lassi is what drew me to this place, but the food was quite good! My sister and I came in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and there were a few tables that were taken but plenty of seating available. Service was a bit slow given that there were only a few other tables but that's the trend these days with restaurants being understaffed. We ordered: mango lassi, blueberry lassi, chicken momo, chicken and mushroom curry, shrimp stir fried noodles, and garlic naan. Definitely get the lassi drinks, $7 each and worth it! Compliments the curry dish well. Drinks were refreshing. The chicken momo was good, but I felt like there wasn't enough meat to wrapping ratio. They did come out piping hot! The chicken mushroom was delicious, very rich in spices. The rice did fall short with me, I was expecting it to be more fragrant. I opted to add garlic naan instead of bread and it worked out well with the curry dish. I did like that the dish had a variety of vegetables and not sauce heavy. The shrimp stir fried noodles were more al dente. We had to keep swatting away a couple fruit flies. Not sure if the lassi's attracted them but really didn't want them to land on our food.. overall a good experience and would return again.

Yelp
The food here is consistently excellent. My go to is the Chicken Mushroom Chili, extra spicy. They have a 10 point spice scale, which is very helpful since my wife enjoys her food more mild. They are also flexible with the order, allowing me to substitute extra vegetables instead of rice. Lastly, as an appetizer, I highly recommend their Momos, Nepalese dumplings. So good!

Yelp
Great food, great service. The atmosphere is calm and it feels very welcoming. The mango lassi was top notch!

Yelp
i can't say enough bad things about this tiny place. service was ok though i only saw the waiter three times- when i sat down, when i complained and when he brought the bill. The food is a fusion i think but not very good and wayyyy too spicy. I love spicy food but not when it's weird off putting and cold. I will never 'eat' there again - tried to send it back and it went back with a rather sour look from the server. I was never offered a replacement, a fix or a refund. I was in a party of 5 and no one enjoyed their food even after they figured out what it was they ordered. The pairing were so strange we weren't sure we actually recvd what we ordered. Couldn't really tell what was in the food and everything was off putting. I was the only one with the temerity to send my plate back but after the waiter just picked up the plate and left and never returned everyone else just wanted to leave whether they ate or not. I've never had a server take the food so seriously that they take it personal. i know he didn't cook it. Seriously EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE. I have no idea how this place stays open.

Yelp
Food was delicious, and service was fantastic. This was my first time there, and we loved the saag paneer momos, palak paneer, garlic naan, mango lassi, and the Channa chhoila and the kale. I can't wait to come again.
google avatar

Mili M.

Yelp
Pretty delicious! Chicken tikka masala and garlic naan were excellent. Momos - would recommend the chicken, not the spinach/paneer. Chicken and mushroom curry was excellent while the paneer/eggplant lacked a bit of flavor. Overall a good and tasty experience! Will return
google avatar

Alice T.

Yelp
We went there for a birthday celebration. The staff was friendly and the food was amazingly good! Probably the best Indian food we've had in the Boston area. We will return soon!

Keith D.

Yelp
OMG the food was amazing. My wife and I both had the Tiki Masala and then we also ordered some of the chicken Mo Mo's. I went with a 5 out of 10 on the spicy scale and it was perfect for me. My wife went with a 2 and said that she could have gone spicier. This place is not fancy but the food is fantastic. I cant wait to go back and try some other dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing, amazing, amazing little gem hiding on a random street. Have the goat special - it's SO delicate and rich. And the chicken momos. I will certainly come back. Not really sure about the "all the cuisines of the world" deal, it definitely skews heavily toward a Nepalese & Indianfeel.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Very high quality delicious food. You get what you pay for! The price is higher but the food is really beautifully made and the ingredients are high quality.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
I recently ordered takeout from here while visiting Boston and the food was amazing! So flavorful! The menu itself is impressive. There is definitely something for everyone. I loved the steamed chicken momo. My mother and husband enjoyed the rack of lamb and boar ribs. My only complaint is the portion sizes aren't very big for the price. I also would have liked more rice than what I received. Overall, a solid choice for takeout. Will definitely be eating there again when I'm back in the Boston area.
google avatar

Atisha A.

Yelp
This place is a such a hidden gem. We went to a wine and cheese tasting near by and then went here for a quick dinner. All the food was made fresh and tasted great. They can also customize the spice levels to each person's desire. The prices are reasonable and the portions are appropriate as well. If you're in the area, really recommend this place!

Debbie F.

Yelp
Delicious, healthy and interesting cuisine! We did take out and it was awesome. We will be back.

Chris M.

Yelp
Base Crave is a hidden gem, tucked away in the Huron Village. Everything I've ever had there has been delicous. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars as it has Huron Villages prices, read: expensive for the portion size. That said, I highly recommend you try it sometime.

Susie K.

Yelp
Everything is so delicious. Fresh, well prepared. Will order again. So good! This was a massive catering order so I was really impressed by the quality.

Alyssa P.

Yelp
Amazing food! Great ambiance and tasted fresh. It was my first time having Nepali food and it was lovely. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
New place with nice decor. Decent sized dining area with scattering of 2 to 4 seats with some larger tables. Fits around 40 I guess. Street parking easy but we went around 2 so not sure if it would be more difficult during lunch time. Food time: - Calamari Grilled Small Plate has this delicious blend of spices that really perks up the taste buds. They let you choose spiciness level from 1-10 so just mention which level your comfortable at. The calamari is sliced into smaller chunks but heavily marinated so its an explosion of flavor in every bite. The vegetable are crisp and gives a good crunch. The rice puffs are crunchy and gives the dish a good texture. Its not a big plate so really just small snack for sharing. - Haddock Curry Lunch Entree comes with basmati rice. The rice wasn't as aromatic as I expected but the curry was actually very good. The curry sauce is very condensed so expect the flavors to be intense. I picked spice level 6 and it was just right for me. There was respectable amount of haddock chunks in there but I was more impressed with the crispness of the veggies and how well everything came together. Needs more mint sauce though. - Bread was extra $3 but was worth it. It isn't heavily flavored but came out nice and toasty and dipped in the mint sauce is incredible. Overall great lunch spot and definitely will come back to try other dishes. FYI, outside no signage yet as they're still new so you might miss it.

Yelp
Great service and food. My wife and I both enjoyed the chicken stir fry and chicken Mo Mo. would definitely come back again!

Madison C.

Yelp
So, so insanely good! Loved their samosas and chicken tikka masala. Lovely restaurant and great service.

Noah W.

Yelp
I love base crave it is so good and I love your chicken momos! I go once every few weeks and I enjoy it every time.

Asantewaa B.

Yelp
The service was good, the ambiance was good and the food was amazing. Our water was very nice and attentive. The ambiance was very good and the vibe was good. There was music playing in the background and the seats were very comfortable. The spices were on point and the spice level was very accurate. Me and my family ordered a vegetable mo mom, gundruk, chicken mushroom chili, tufo curry and shrimp bhuteko and naan. Everything was amazing and I felt good after eating the meal and did not feel bloated or uncomfortable full. I felt as if i just god a home made meal cooked for me. Overall i would highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
This was a welcome surprise ! Nepalese food using fresh ingredients and lots of vegetables. We ordered the chicken mushroom curry-delicious. Lighter and more chunky and tomato-y and less soupy than traditional Indian curry. The Moh Moh dumplings were pillowy and delicious. We ordered the saag paneer ones. Wine, beer and cider. Great service. We'll be back! Tip: food can be ordered 1-10 on spicy scale. We both love spice, ordered 3 and it was plenty spicy and hot without being overpowering or detracting from the delicious flavors.

Amar E.

Yelp
How can this place be rated 5 stars. Look at the pics, 3 orders in one container squished versus two orders in separate containers. Barely any sauce, look at the picture. You'll see a huge difference between the two. Not coming back. Try Momo N' Curry in Somerville. It's not fine dining but it'll be worth every penny you spend. Only a 10 more min longer drive. P.s. Naan bread costs extra

Sharee P.

Yelp
I love eating here it's the perfect date night spot. everyone is so pleasant and the food is phenomenal seriously close your eyes and point to something and you can't go wrong!!!! PS you must start with the Gundruk soup. Be sure to take note of your spice level choices -start off with a level 4 ease your Way up once you get to 7 it's a beautiful thing! The staff is amazing both warm and welcome, The staff is just as good as food and that's saying a lot!

Mark P.

Yelp
Great little place for Nepali and Himalayan food. Staff are really friendly and attentive. There are plenty of vegan and gluten free options, and of course the classic gundruk soup.
google avatar

T M.

Yelp
Didn't know much going in, but the food is fantastic! Loved the lamb and mushroom chili. So flavorful. I never leave reviews, but this place was excellent.
google avatar

Ritika B.

Yelp
While the momos drew me to this place, I must mention that i was left impressed with everything we ordered. The paneer curry was very fresh and you could tell it was prepared from scratch and with fresh spices. The gundruk soup was the highlight - had never tried it before and was left yearning for more. And lastly, the momos lived up to the hype. Special shoutout to the owner for including non-gmo, organic ingredients where needed. It isn't often that you see restaurants pay such granular attention to those aspects, but Base Crave has it covered.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere, and service. I've ordered out from them and eaten on their nice patio. The momos are delicious and I love their curries and their chili stir fry. I've tasted many other dishes and none of them disappoint! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I'll have to keep trying everything!
google avatar

Sofia F.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food with excellent service and a cozy ambience. The tofu curry (spiciness 6) was one of the best things I've ever had, and the spinach and paneer momos were great too. Lots of vegetarian options, as well as vegan ones. For the carnivores, my dad loved the lamb chili (also spiciness 6). Looking forward to returning! Note: Spiciness level 6 chili got my spice-loving dad sweating, but I found the level 6 curry to be the sweet spot (by sweet I of course mean great flavor and tingling lips without actual pain or burning).

Elisabeth M.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal at Base Crave! There were eight of us and people ordered different dishes, and everyone said the food was good. The chicken momos were a favorite appetizer together with the veggie samosas and garlic naan bread. The main dishes were different from a standard Indian restaurant and very nicely spiced (you decide how spicy hot on a scale from 0-10, and they came out pretty much as people expected; one dish we ordered with a heat rating of 0 came exactly like that and was said to be very good). Fresh ingredients, served with veggies and rice in decent-sized portions. The chicken-mushroom chili dish was very flavorful!! We were celebrating a birthday so brought our own cake, which they brought to the table with candles lit, so did not try their desserts. Limited but good selection of wine and beer, no cocktails (not an issue for us), and various delicious fruit lassis (mango, strawberry, etc.) which were great for those who were not drinking alcohol. The young man who served us struggled a bit with English but was friendly and courteous and service was good. The place is relaxed, unpretentious but comfortable, and there was background Nepalese (I assume) music, but not loud enough to interfere with conversation. It was quite popular on the Friday evening we came. Prices are quite reasonable, but one suggestion for management would be to adjust prices up by 20% rather than having a 20% service charge AND a place for additional tip, as that might rub some customers the wrong way, especially if the 20% mandatory service charge is added to carry out orders, as someone said it is. There is on-street parking nearby. Overall we had a very pleasant experience, the food was delicious, the prices reasonable, the service was good, and we will definitely be back!

Yelp
Excellent new spot on Huron ave. Slightly less family friendly than full moon and a totally different kind of food - Nepali vs standard American - but the food is excellent. The interior will be recognizeable in layout but different colors - darker - and missing a play area. The momo - called steamy dumplings - range in price from $10-$12 and come 8 to an order. They are excellent - delicately folded wrappers, well seasoned filling. The lamb, wild boar and chicken all contain juicy pockets of shredded meat and are hard to stop eating. An order of bread is puffy, buttery and has a sauce similar to aji verde, only slightly sweeter. Chicken choila ($13) is a mixture of chopped chicken mixed with vegetables in a curry like sauce highlighted by cumin and chili flavors - it is not spicy. It comes with puffed rice to mix in. Gundruck soup is a deep red, soy based soup that is fiery and thick. Dal lentil soup is rich, also toothy. The lamb and mushroom curry entree ($25) is ordered at spice level 10. This will be too much for the casual rusticator who likes to dabble in levels of heat. What's amazing about the dish is that the mouth never is so hot that food can't be tasted. However, The heat builds and soon sweat is dripping. The lamb is plentiful, the curry is a combination of nogh jolopia peppers, cumin and other spices sizzling around carrots, zucchini, jalapeno peppers, onions Wild boar ribs are piled on rice and ordered at spice level 4. Sweet meat pulls easily from the bone. The meat is mild in flavor but moist. Served with an almost sticky curry, they are excellent. Chicken noodle stir fry comes mixed with kale, green peppers and a pungent aroma of cumin and light pepper. Theee are not greasy noodles, they are cooked well and the seasoning sticks to the noodles well. An excellent place. Delicious food. Friendly service.

Yelp
We order food from here roughly once a week. Love the Momo dumplings, tika masala, and naan. The outdoor seating is great, as has been the service when we've eaten in, though since we live a block we are most familiar with take out. Staff are very respectful of those who are on the more careful spectrum of masking for COVID. They are also accommodating of those bringing well-behaved pets for outdoor seating. The online order system will typically report a 30 minute wait when the typical turn-around is 12-15 minutes.

Yelp
We ordered take out from Base Crave recently and loved it. Excellent menu, very flavorful and nuanced in flavor and spicing. It was really nice to find a solid Himalyan/Nepalese fusion spot in the Boston area. Only caveat is it can be a bit pricey for take-out (both in terms of the pricing of each plate and mandatory 20% service fee for take-out), so something to keep in mind if you're debating take-out versus dining experience. Momo - We got paneer and spinach and also the wild boar momo. Both were so flavorful and fresh. Highly recommend the momo here. Sweet Potato Chhoila - Thank you, fellow Yelp reviewers, for recommending this - it was so tasty. Loved the tangy lime flavor, cumin, mustard oil and chilis. Definitely ordering this again. Gundruk Soup - This was delicious, and exciting to find a very tasty, satiating soup that doesn't have fish sauce or a meat stock (not a vegetarian/vegan, but often notice the best soups often have fish or meat in them for the stock). It did seem a bit more oily than expected. Eggplant Basil Paneer - Ordered this from another Yelper rec. This was so tasty and was not too oily (as sometimes it can seem eggplant absorbs way too much oil). Goat Mushroom curry - this was very tasty as well.

Yelp
Pretty solid restaurant! We got the goat & mushroom curry and the wild boar momos, which were good and didn't taste that different than pork! Naan was good too. My only complaint is price vs size. A standard curry entrée is around 23 dollars, and the side of naan was $5. Just a little pricy compared to size, so I wouldn't bring kids here.
google avatar

Benjamin S.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Service was pleasant and fast. We got veggie momos to start and they were lighter and less greasy than other versions we've tried. We devoured them in no time. I bet they'd be good for takeout as well. For an entree I had the wild boar ribs which came over basmati rice and a ton of fresh veggies. I went with spice level 6/10. I probably could've gone spicier, but it still had a nice heat to it. My fiancé ordered a shrimp curry and thoroughly enjoyed her meal as well. Portions were good and everything was very fresh. The garlic naan on the side was hard to stop eating! I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I absolutely loved Base Crave. The drive was a little over an hour, after I previously sent my daughter here when she was traveling to meet a client. Worth noting, it was a scenic drive and Huron Avenue has some great shops. First, the restaurant took all COVID precautions, and the meal did not disappoint. We had vegetarian Mo Mo, Gundruk soup, and Eggplant Basil Paneer. To say that the paneer is the best I have ever had is an understatement. The soup, unique and delicious - I want to learn how to make it, or version of it. If I lived in the area, this place would be my go to at least twice a week. Can't wait until next trip to Cambridge to visit this gem.
