I recently had the pleasure of dining at Basil Cafe in Rockwall, TX, and it was an unforgettable experience. The ambiance was charming, the service impeccable, and the food, simply outstanding. One dish that stole the show was the Angry Dragon Roll, boasting a delectable combination of lobster, caviar, and spicy crab mix on top. Each bite was a burst of flavors that danced on my taste buds. It’s a must-try for anyone visiting Basil Cafe. Highly recommended!

Super cozy spot, warm and friendly, Garlic edamame and filet minion app is great, boat lovers for two was filling for 2 people with plenty of fish assortment, every piece was full of different flavor and tasted fresh it was served with a salad or soup she got salad i got miso soup and they were both good, then I wanted one more roll my lady was stuffed but I wanted 1 more the ocean man was recommend by the waitress and did not disappoint. Highly recommend for a nice date or lunch.

Great date night place! The sushi is delicious, and hot dishes are good too. Service is friendly. The atmosphere is simply lit and cozy. My wife and I really enjoy this spot. It's a large menu, so if you're not into sushi there's plenty of cooked options.

This is an awesome place to enjoy Asian cuisine. I love the atmosphere and the abundance of the dining experience. My best friend and I enjoyed just all kinds of entrées. The menu is so beautifully displayed that it's like the food jumps out of the pages. We had an awesome waitress!!!!They played great music, which accompanied the delicious food they served. Basil Cafe owes me nothing!!!!

Came on Friday around 6pm, wasn't busy yet, we got seated right away. Menu is pretty extensive with lots to choose from. For appetizers, we ordered the bao buns. Each bun is super soft with a thick slice of pork belly marinated in bulgogi sauce. My husband ordered the Thai pineapple fried rice, he loved it. It's served in a pineapple with fresh chunks of pineapple mixed into the dish. I ordered the ramen with shrimp, broth isn't salty like most ramen places, it balances nicely with the other ingredients in the ramen. The shrimp are lightly coated with tempura (I think?) and they inlcude plenty of pieces in the ramen. We also got the New York Rolls, very delish & generously filled with seafood. My one complaint was the disinterested answer that Sandy gave when my husband asked which would she recommend- Thai pineapple fried rice or Japanese fried rice- she snapped a bit and answered a very curt " I don't know what you like! If you like pineapple get the Thai if you don't like pineapple, get the other one!" It didn't really answer the question of which one she recommends or thinks is better...if she had not tried either dish & can't give a good recommendation, she could've answered that way. The snippy response with mild attitude seemed uncalled for...overall, great food, fast service, would come back again...don't ask recommendations from Sandy...

This is a recent find, as in November of 2023, since then we’ve been 3 times, with this one on Christmas Eve. I’m pretty happy with all that we’ve found here, for Thai and Japanese food, this last time we had the shrimp ramen, very good and the broth is very deep in flavor. The Lovers Boat is fantastic! It’s sashimi, nageri, and a roll, quite tasty and filling. The ambiance is very nice, and they accommodate larger parties. We noticed that the noise level with larger parties is elevated but not so bad you can’t hear across the table. If you have a hankering and don’t want to drive to Dallas, this should be a stop!

Small nice restaurant in a strip mall with plenty of parking. Restaurant and bathrooms are very clean and in good repair. Menu has a wide variety of selections. Staff was polite and nice but not very helpful. Our sushi and fried rice were very good. Prices are slightly on the high side. I would recommend for a quiet sushi/Asian meal.

Was in town visiting from Houston and tried this place for the first time. The Japanese fried rice was so good. The hot tea was ok. The ambiance of the restaurant was good as well!

We live in Forney but this is one of our favorite Asian restaurants around. We order food from here about every other week or so. My favorite entree is the Pad Thai and my favorite app is the Rock Shrimp. My wife enjoys the Playboy Roll. I would say that the sushi is decent. My wife always gets that. I do think that Sushi options are very limited on this side of Lake Ray Hubbard tho. I wish they had some newer or different updated Sushi items. Then they'd be 10/10 in my book! What I like about this restaurant is the food quality. You don't always get this level of quality and taste with other restaurants. They are always friendly when I go in to pickup my food. I just rarely see any patrons inside. I think they may do more takeout business tho. Still a family favorite!!

Best Asian food we found in rockwall and nearby, consistently good and delicious. Great Sushi and Ramen, service is on point and everything tastes fresh. Relaxing ambiance and very quiet. The only dish we didn't like was the filet Mignon and their tiramisù interpretation is not the best.

My husband and I visited for a Friday night date night this past week. It's easy to miss and looks dark from the outside at night but I was pleasantly surprised at its modern decor and romantic ambiance. There were a few people eating but not full. Our server came quickly and suggested appetizers. We ended up with their coconut shrimp, the Rock Wall roll, Author roll and filet minon maki. Everything tasted fresh and we enjoyed it but I will say that my husband would have preferred more coconut on the shrimp and the filet minon was slightly over cooked (got a little tough). The crème brûlée was a nice touch of sweetness after our rolls but wasn't spectacular. I loved the variety on their menu and we will definitely be back to try the ramen and/or Thai dishes.

I love this restaurant! The atmosphere is cozy and great for a date night. Great, quick service and good sushi! They have some good specials too if you come at the right time. Great for dine in or takeout.

I think we found our go-to. The food was so very delicious and beautiful. We ordered fried rice, ramen and a sushi boat and could not have been more pleased. The fish was delicious and fresh. The ramen broth was smooth and had very well developed flavors. The service was quick and intuitive. The dining room is cozy with comfortable seating. 10/10 recommend.

A somewhat romantic spot. We have passed this place by for years since moving here. Took the boss lady out for lunch and after entering were seated quickly. Very nice decor and clean to boot. I ordered the sashimi special and she the chicken katsu bento box lunch. Both plates came out quick. My sashimi was very fresh (if your fish smells fishy, it ain't fresh!) with a simple display on the plate. Her bento box was nicely filled with rice and a sushi roll. Can't wait to go back.

When they said this was the best sushi in Rockwall, they lied. It's better than that! Absolutely so cute inside. Currently, BYOB and so accommodating. Glasses and no service fees. They are working on their liquor license so I am sure that will change. Service was quick and prompt. We had a couple small apps and ordered a lot of rolls. They came so very quick! We got 5 specialty rolls and 2 basic. We figured let's get a variety to ensure we like some because we have had such bad luck finding sushi we like since we moved to the area. All 5 rolls were amazing and we wrote them down so we would get them next time. Angry dragon Lobster rainbow Tnt rol Sweetheart toll Ocean men roll The two basic was spicy tuna and Alaskan. S to R, it's buy 2 get 1 free. Every day of the week, to go orders are buy 2 get 1 for $2. Highly highly recommend.

the food here is incredible! the pineapple fried rice was DELICIOUS! The Dancing Chicken was INCREDIBLE AS WELL!! I also ordered the On Your Way Roll, and it was great too, but it felt like it was missing something. Quite honestly all the food here surpassed my expectation. My favorite is the Pineapple fried rice, then comes the Dancing Chicken, lastly comes the on your way roll. The Service was mediocre, nothing special. The review would be lower stars but the food is so good it outweighed the mediocre service. The ambiance is really cool. It's dark and feels upscale to an extent. The music playing in the background is really cool and drives a pop/pop country vibe.

I haven't sat in for a meal but I enjoy the sushi and they have great weekday specials. The staff is also attentive and make recommendations.

Had a birthday dinner here. Sushi was great and tasted fresh. The chicken fried rice was AMAZING. The Surf and Turf was dry, no butter for the lobster and it was a bit gummy. I also didn't like the crème brûlée, it was grainy. Overall, we enjoyed all the sushi we ordered and aren't overpriced. We would definitely be back for a sushi date night and a chicken fried rice!

Very good food, a lunch box deal that offers variety at a good price. Overall a solid choice for Asian fusion cuisine. I will return.

Basil cafe, May look like your typical hole-in-the-wall, but is actually a really nice dining experience. When me and my two colleagues dined here for the first time, we were slightly overwhelmed by the menu options, which is the only flaw, the rest is better from here. The Japanese ramen was amazing, the broth and the noodles, mixed with my choice of steak was a sensation in my taste buds. The sushi rolls are very nice, and made me eat sushi for the first time since 2020. The servers were really friendly and were authentic to their culture. I am giving a 4/5 stars, would give 4 and a half, because my only flaw is the menu's size, being nearly 10 pages long, making it a little hard to navigate to the stuff you want. Cutting down the menu, or even just adding a table of contents would be a great fix!

Asian flavor at its best. Quiet, nice ambiance, accompanied with delicious dishes, is just relaxing. Priced fairly, I definitely recommend it.

I was just in the mood for a little sushi and sake, and this was definitely the place for that. My only regret is that I wasn't hungrier to have some of the other dishes because looking around the packed restaurant, everything that came out looked delicious. My waitress was pleasant and accommodating. I will definitely go back when visiting Rockwall.

Sushi box is better. Sushi had no flavor. They don't do accommodations even though they have the ingredients to do so. The rolls are small for what you are paying. The tempura sample is pretty good though.

Ahhhh Basil Cafe! One of my favorite places to be in Rockwall back between 2018 and 2019. Then 2020 hit and the restaurant took a hit for the worst! It went two years with being closed seating to the public and really never recovered. Today, there is new owners with same menu. It's clean, very well decorated and a great quaint vibe. Food hasn't changed. It's the same great quality and fast service! I only went for lunch but it was still fantastic and good pricing! Honestly, in Rockwall you don't have very much for sushi (I've tried them all) but this place, is fresh and quality!

Not the best place, too much rice in the roll and it seems as though the person rolling it is using one of those sushi bazooka's lol.

Super cute little place! Food was great. Staff was nice but since it was so small our waitress kept coming by and made us feel a little rushed out. But overall we'll go back!

It's so hard to find chicken tempura rolls, but Basil Cafe has them! And I'm so happy about it. Very good fried rice too.

New Owners 09-22-2022 the name remains the same. Owners are part of 2 other Thai & sushi restaurants in Dallas area. So, I was surprised to find them open, and I helped them make corrections to their Google Maps listing. I was not expecting to eat, but Sabrina invited me to sit inside. Very nice interior, almost like before, and very clean. Thai Curry Chicken w/ Vegetables was fantastic, fragrant, mellow, veggies cooked to perfection, big cuts of chicken breast. Coconut, basil, Curry, peppers, all blending around broccoli, red onion, Mushroom, carrot, with Steamed white rice. Habachi Shrimp was cooked perfect to the bite, nice light sauce. I had a small house Salad and Coconut Curry Chicken soup to start with, and everything was served on elegant settings. Rockwall, Texas will be happy to have Basil Cafe open again, with new owners looking to show their culinary skills. *Dancing Chicken will be one of their special dishes. If you know Thai Square in Forney, Texas, you may have had this delicacy before.

Ordered takeout. Pad sew did not have any flavor at all and it seems they forgot the sauce because it was pale, and again flavorless. The chicken fried rice is just rice with soy sauce, the chicken had very questionable texture. Really underwhelming considering the reviews.

This place is a hidden gem, the location is very clean and the staff is always polite and welcoming. The best part is the food, it's always hard to make our entire family happy at a restaurant but this place takes the cake. My 7 yr old says it's the best chicken he has ever had and begs to go here. The sushi is fresh and well made, you can't go wrong. It's the best sushi I have had in the area without a doubt. My absolute favorite dish so far is the pad Thai, it's very authentic and has great flavor. For those wondering its currently BYOB.

This was only my 1st time at The Basil Cafe, and we loved our lunch. I had the Yaki Udon with chicken. Super tender white meat and fresh vegetables. Very clean, nice atmosphere and Super fresh food. We will definitely be back again soon. Most of all, I appreciate the cleanliness of the dining area and everything on our table. They certainly take pride in what they do. Thank you!!

Basil Cafe has been around a while and has had its ups and downs but just got new owners 2 weeks ago. So I took my wife to check out the new cafe. She was suspicious. We ordered seaweed salad. My wife didn't like it. I did. We got miso soup with our meal. It was not the typical by the numbers miso but quite tasty. Well done. We ordered the sushi boat. The sushi was done just right. Creamy melt-in-your-mouth. The nigiri didn't have a giganto wad of rice, but just the right amount, with the fish gently draped over the top. My wife said it was among the best sashimi she's had. I can think of a few better joints but not in Rockwall, so it's got my vote. Not super cheap but also not grossly overpriced.

Staff was friendly. It's a very small place but luckily we got seated quickly. The ambiance is great as well, they did a good job decorating. We ordered a salmon skin roll to start but it didn't get there until after our other meals were done so I only had one roll but it was delicious. I had originally come in because my family wanted ramen. After looking at the menu and seeing there was only one choice for ramen, I decided to go with the curry. My kids who don't eat much spicy food decided to get the ramen and the first thing they said was there was absolutely zero kick. Presentation was beautiful but it was very bland tasting. Same for my curry, very, very bland. Besides soy sauce, there are no condiments on the table such as chili oil or even salt to help give your food some flavor. I wanted to ask for chili oil or anything that would help but it had gotten very busy & our waitress was helping other tables. Cute place, nice staff but the food is too bland to want to try it again. Just ok.

A hidden gem tucked away behind the Kroger strip center. Small/ intimate with soothing lighting and lovely ambiance. Great food and great service.

Fantastic food, quick service. Gyoza was absolutely fantastic. Fully recommend coming here.

The dumplings were delicious. DO NOT get the Pad Thai if you're a 'Pad Thai' person. The flavors were not there AT ALL and it had an orange color to it indicating they put some other, non-traditional spice in it. The picture on the website is NOT what mine looked like. It lacked that sweet/spicy flavor a good Pad Thai has. I know Pad Thai isn't Japanese but because of the name and the fact it's on their menu, I thought that it would be good. Didn't try the sushi - maybe it's great. But my Pad Thai was definitely the worst I've ever had. Disappointing. :(

Very nice inside and the food was great, from the salad to the entree they didn't disappoint. Pineapple fried rice was super tasty and the was excellent!!! Can't wait to go back!

From the clean and quiet ambiance in the dining area, the friendly staff, and very reasonable prices Basic cafe has quickly moved up our list of fantastic food spots in the Rockwall area. Great job, staff and owners!

My family and I love the menu choices at this quaint Japanese restaurant. We enjoy the Rock Wall Roll, Volcano Roll, and Spicy Salmon Roll as well as the Yakisoba, Japanese Ramen, Pineapple Fried Rice and the Japanese Combination Fried Rice. The calm and welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff are just a few reasons we keep returning. We highly recommend Basil Cafe.

Food is like to spicy for young children and some older adults,the service was good and the eating out experience was great

Ordered online , paid, confirmed and went up there and it WAS CLOSED! No one was there, no available voicemail, it's not even the holiday yet. So frustrating to me , super disappointed

Beautiful restaurant. It was closed for indoor dining for a couple years due to Covid and low staffing. It re-opened in September and we're so excited. It's a cozy beautiful restaurant with wonderful food and a friendly staff.

After management let that one bartender (who's name must not be mentioned) the establishment has gone from hated to loved.

The BEST seafood dish I've ever had!! I ordered the King of the Sea dish (a little on the pricier side but TOTALLY worth it), and the dish looked exactly like it did on the photo. It arrived hot and the seafood was extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. The scallops were squeaky clean (no crunchiness at all) and tender, while the salmon, lobster, and shrimp were all seasoned perfectly in a curry-based sauce that had just enough spice. On top of that, when we walked in we were greeted with smiles and our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu and made great recommendations. The restaurant is very clean and in keeping with the theme of the cuisine. We will definitely be coming back!!!

Great food, I've tried a lot of dishes. All were outstanding except the ramen. It's just okay. Sushi is some of the best in Rockwall.

We were greeted as soon as we came in and had our drinks very quickly. Our waitress was caring and answered all our questions very politely. The salad and soups were brought out and were delicious. I had the curry shrimp and it was it tasted excellent. The shrimp were very tender. We are definitely coming back again.

Delicious sushi!! On the pricey side, but so worth every last cent! Update: I went back to this location today and ordered the Dancing Chicken. It was super good! Only thing that turned me off was when we walked into the restaurant my sister and I both said, "peeyew!!" At the saw time. Later on, when I went to the bathroom, I saw what that smell was. The bathroom door had been propped open after someone blew the place up. I didn't see air freshener in sight. All I ask is to please have some form of air freshener in the bathroom because that restaurant is so small that the smell engulfs the whole place.

Great food! I have 5 appetizers with a friend. I enjoyed the variety. The Indian pancake was different but good. It comes out inflated- lol The filet mignon wrapped asparagus was amazing! I really loved the pork and buns!!

The only enjoyable part of our visit was the ambiance. We asked for the ramen and the pineapple fried rice to be extra spicy, and both were very very bland. We asked for something to add to make it spicy and they gave us about 1/4 teaspoon of some pepper powder to split between both dishes. Even the edamame was bland - no seasonings, not even salt. The spicy kani salad was very dry. The filet mignon make was over cooked and dry also.

BEST SUSHI EVAH'!!!!!! OMG!!! Can I get an AMEN!??? It's only taken a year and a half but THANK YOU we found an amazing restaurant with great service and beautiful rolls that taste Amazing! Thank you Summer for recommending the Rockwall Roll, the mango roll, the spider roll and the special Tuna roll! We also enjoyed the hot sake and the free Indian pancake for first time check ins!!! Great first dining experience, this place is beautiful and deserves 6

Excellent everything !! Free Indian pancake with curry dipping sauce for a Yelp check in, was incredible. Hot fluffy, pita like bread obviously freshly made. Highlight of my meal. Also had a house Cabernet, shrimp & avocado roll & crispy duck entree. Cabernet & roll we're good, not exceptional but as expected. Crispy duck was crispy ! Served with assorted crisp veggies & steamed rice. Tasty plum sauce made the duck an outstanding dish. I have to admit I was surprised at the quality & flavor of the food. Attractive presentation & perfect temperature on all dishes. Cold crisp salad came with the entree. Choice of soup or salad. Entree was a tad pricey but I don't mind paying for an excellent dish. The other app & roll seemed appropriately priced. Rather small restaurant in a strip mall but had trendy Dallas uptime vibe. Nice decor & tableware. Excellent service & quick service on all dishes. Timing was perfect between dishes. I rarely send a message thru the wait staff to the chef but did so today. Best meal I've had in Rockwall & I'm glad to see this level of dining come to this area. I'm a big foodie & I loved it. Food & service were 5 star but strip mall made me rate 4 stars. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed.
