The 22 Best Restaurants in Malmö, Sweden | Eater

"The most rebellious days of Andreas Dahlberg’s now-iconic nose-to-tail restaurant, when its tables were a gathering place for the city’s creative misfits, are likely behind it. In 2010 it was the first in town to properly embody the contemporary bistro-wine bar hybrid that has become quintessential in the Copenhagen-Malmö region. But today it has matured into a continental dining room revolving around a U-shaped bar and the open kitchen. Here, Bastard serves up hearty and sophisticated food crossing British and Mediterranean cooking with the area’s most pristine produce. The place is known for its early and unwavering focus on low-intervention wines, converting guests from skeptics to fanatics. [$$]" - Alisa Larsen

We had a great night at this bar! Great value and vibes all around. Able to order drinks and snacks from the table using a QR code. Loads of great games to chose from! Highly recommended for a date night or night with friends

Google
I did not eat here but I did pop in to see why there was a constant stream of people heading in. What a cool place! There must be literally thousands of board games here. Lots of people playing magic the gathering and similar. If that’s your thing - check it out!

Google
We had an amazing time at Bastard Café! The atmosphere is super relaxed and welcoming, with a great selection of board games to choose from – perfect for hanging out with friends or meeting new people. They also have a fantastic variety of beers on tap, which pairs perfectly with the cozy vibe. The staff were friendly and helpful, making the whole experience even better. If you're in Copenhagen and looking for a unique spot to chill, play games, and enjoy good drinks, this is the place to go!

Google
My favourite place from the whole trip. The staff were lovely and very helpful, great variety of games and drinks. Useful tip, use Google photo translate to translate the game leaflet so u don't have to stick to only the English games.

Google
I rarely give any restaurants/café under 4 stars unless there really are reasons to do so. Not many smiles from the cashier - actually not a single one when we were ordering. We got popcorn in a paper bag, which was rather disappointing considering that you sit down and play board games. The passion fruit lemonade was rather disappointing. Ice latte too honestly. But the flat white was spot on. Great atmosphere really! And I think that is what most are seeking. I might be a smaller minority - maybe I wasn't the right target group to enter that cafe. But I was a bit disappointed.

Google
Very friendly and very helpful, order from the table, they also do food, can get very busy so book in u really want to go. Be aware most of the games are in Danish but “who’s who” doesn’t care 😆 Lovely big clean toilet as well, also nice and warm….

Google
Amazing place! We stayed in Copenhagen only for 4 nights and visited this place twice. We were 3 people and wanted to play a game and have beer. They have insane amount of games. I loved how they display them. Looking for Catan was like a treasure hunt which we enjoyed so much. On the second night, we could not find it but the staff helped us. The cards were covered with clear plastic and they were very clean. The only thing they can improve is having more Catan. This place became one of our favorite places in Copenhagen.

Google
This place is brill! We went 3x during our time in Copenhagen. They were very helpful with games. Food wasn’t great, drink was fine. Great selection of beer, and loads of games!!

Yelp
Bastard Cafe is a must visit if you are ever visiting Copenhagen. It's fun, loud, and colorful. This location has over 5,000 board games. It's astounding the amount of games in this place. They are everywhere! There is even a "Game Guru", seated somewhere in the center of the cafe. You can ask him/her any game-related questions. They can recommend the perfect game for you to play and they even instruct you on how to play. There is a QR code at each table you can use to order drinks/foods. They will bring it to the table. They serve coffee, beer, wine, cocktails. They also serve some light bites such as nachos and nuggets. 5 stars - Nice ambiance. Come play a game, have a drink, listen to music, and enjoy the artwork.

Yelp
I am not a gamer, but I do appreciate sitting down and playing a good game every now and then. While I was in Europe visiting with a friend, she asked if I wanted to stop in to this little cafe and play some games. We went into the first entrance we saw, which led us into a small basement space with a counter to order drinks, and a little back room with more games. To me, it was a pretty typical gaming cafe - nothing remarkable. We played some card games for a bit, sipped our tea, and then we headed upstairs to leave... but THEN, we realized the actual MAIN section of the cafe was upstairs, and it was huge. There were several copies of each game neatly stacked, and went on forever. Every game you could think of seemed to be on the shelved. They had cute merchandise, too. We were both bummed we didn't realize it before, but I bookmarked this place so that I can return next time I am in Copenhagen. If you love gaming, this place is a must.

Yelp
I have so many thoughts on this place, so I'm going to make it as concise as I can. 1) Holy cow, the number of board games is WILD. This is a tiny portion of the number of games that we saw as an option. It makes choosing something incredibly difficult! Come in with a game plan and multiple options, because having to choose will overwhelm you even more. 2) The food options are ok, but they serve you a large amount of food in each serving. So prepare for that! They have better drink options, and they're very reasonably priced. 3) MAKE SURE YOU GET A RESERVATION. If you don't, it's going to be really hard to get a table at all - much less a table bigger than a 2 top. 4) HAVE FUN!! It's seriously such a cool place. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Yelp
Games, cocktails and a relaxed ambience. But be aware of pickpockets, with everyone feeling so relaxed and friendly it may seem they're not around but they are.

Dom P.

Yelp
Really cool atmosphere, cheap drinks, and an unbelievable amount of games. Usually pretty crowded and there's limited table space, so reservations are a good idea.

Yelp
We decided to stop by one night and it did not disappoint. The cafe had all the board games you could imagine and had multiple sections where you could sit and hang out. Some of the more common games were free to play and they had others where you could rent for a small price. There's also food and drinks you can order. Definitely a fun place to hang out with friends!

Yelp
Atmosphere is great but food is sub-par. Recommend this place for a fun (but casual) night out with friends for board games and drinks. I ordered a mushroom grilled cheese that barely had any toppings and was heavy on bread. Chai was good though!

Yelp
A really great place to be, whether you are bored out of your mind or are looking for a place to just grab a coffee and relax. The orange stickers mean you can play some games for free (honor policy) and there are even professional game administrators who can help you out if you need it! The atmosphere is great and the bar is nice. :)

Yelp
OH MY. If you've looked this place up on Yelp you're on the right track. Honestly if you're short on time or sick of scrolling, don't even read further. Just trust me here, you absolutely have to make a trip to Bastard Cafe. You're welcome in advance. However, if you do feel as though you want to keep reading, be my guest. Bastard is a board game bar in the center of Copenhagen. It is close to Magstræde, that super picturesque, colorful street, and Christiansborg Palace. The cafe is pretty large with multiple rooms and outdoor space, but it can definitely fill up quickly! Don't be discouraged if you can't find a place to sit immediately. You may be able to share a couch or wait until some others finish. Some games are free to play, others cost. The fee is 25 kr/person and then you can play any of the $ games all night. They offer a selection of coffees and hot chocolate, beers, and snack food. The sweet potato fries are seriously so good. I would highly recommend those if you're to order food. And lastly, if you're a tourist, like me, it's nice to know that this is a place that Danes genuinely come to to hang out in a cozy, hyggeligt setting. I lived in Copenhagen for 4 months, and this was one of my favorite spots in the city.

Yelp
When the sun goes down before 5pm, and most shops close early - Bastard Cafe is a must visit to kill time. Visited here a few days ago on vacation w/ my sister. We had a wonderful time playing some crazy games here. We ordered 2 teas and played for over an hour. There are many games, either in Danish or English language. Shelves of games are all over the place, so you have to thoroughly look through the shelves to find the game of your choice. They have jenga, scrabble, mystery games, and some weird ones I have never seen. We attempted to play 6 different games, and our most favorite was Jenga. I guess we have low attention spans, because a lot of the games were so weird, or were quite boring. Went around to see if there was Uno or Monopoly, but didn't see one. There are tons of seating, but make sure to come early as it gets packed fast. We came here twice, and first time it was full. Second attempt we came much earlier, and it was 90% full but we were able to get a 2 person table.

Yelp
Excellent place to have a chill night out with your friends. The atmosphere is great here and the crowd is very mixed (not only youngester's!) There are so many games, and it may get difficult to choose a game. My friends and I actually spent quite a while to figure out how to play a game... Haha, but it was a really fun and relaxing night out. A break from all the dancing! The drink prices are quite reasonable, inexpensive. I think the food too, but I didn't get to try any of the food. The place is quite spacious as well, my friends and I went on a Friday night and it was not overly crowded, but it was filled.

Yelp
Did somebody say games ? They line the shelves of the place and they're the reason you go. Free games are labelled and the whole cafe is filled with friends & families settling Catan and exploding kittens. There are game gurus who can help you learn a new game or if you're feeling feisty you can pay for a more complex option - something like Turning Point Stalingrad. Its a dynamic spot in terms of seats, you'll probably want to take a lap and scope out your spot. Then head to the counter to order - it's pretty much pub food but it's good and quick. Nachos were good for sharing & the toasts were a bit heartier. Warm gooey cheese schlepped out of my salami toast and honestly I loved it. Give me more cheese ha. And of course they have all kinds of beers & spirits. I imagine this place is always sorta busy but I encourage you to spend an afternoon here.

Yelp
Fantastic place. And since I've gotten this question a lot; no, it's not just for nerds. There are people of all ages who visit! You don't have to play games to be there, you can also sit and enjoy the atmosphere. There's a wide range of games to enjoy, some for free and some you have to pay to play. However, a membership for en entire year is only 125kr i believe - and you get to bring a friend for free! Otherwise it's 25kr to play all games in the cafe. Their bar is also great! I don't drink but they do serve lots of different drinks which I'm sure are great. Their hot chocolate is amazing, you must try it if you visit. Their fries..... Don't even get me started on their fries. You get to choose if you want curly or regular or skinny or with vinegar and just... So many choices!! This cafe is just so. Damn. GOOD.

Yelp
Best latte I've had yet on this trip! (We were in Oslo before and now Copenhagen) This is a definite recommend to family and friends for both their good coffee and plethora of board games (most are free to play but some are not). This place is huge in size yet super charming. So you can feel comfortable coming here in a big group as well as just as a couple or even individually. There is a relaxed vibe with great service. I loved how the lattes came with a mini candy bar--very nice surprise and delight with that treat!

Yelp
What a fantastic concept. Bastard Cafe serves beer, hard apple cider, and non-alcoholic drinks. There is limited bar food. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Lots of tables and some sitting areas. The best part is all the games! There are lots of free games, well organized on shelves. For other games, you have to pay. I played a free game called Letters to Santa with my boyfriend, and had a great time. The cloudy cider was mighty tasty. I could spend hours at this place. Skol!

Yelp
What an absolutely fantastic place! This huge and comfortable cafe is a board game player's paradise. There is an extraordinary selection of games in Danish and English. The atmosphere is so relaxed and full of fun. You can come with friends or you can meet new people by playing games while having drinks and snacks. This kind of place is really needed in NYC!
google avatar

Yelp
GO HERE!!! This is truly as good as it gets. My five stars is not because of the food or drink; it's for the concept. I've never seen a bar with board games before! This gaming bar is so cool - and not just for board game people. There are hundreds - maybe thousands - of games to play, many of them free. We didn't pay to play at all. There were tons of games to play in the free section, many of the ones you'd expect to see. I think if you came as a regular local, you'd probably want the membership, but as a visitor, you don't need it at all. We came twicein two days to play and drink. Their menu is pretty standard, beers and wines, some teas and non-alcoholic drinks too. We didn't try the food, it didn't look super impressive. I assume most of their high star reviews are not for their menu. But they did have lots of snack foods - like popcorn and fries, so that's all you really need. Definitely, if you're in the area with some time to kill - absolutely stop by for a round of drinks and a few games.

Yelp
Great place to meet friends and pass away a few hours in the afternoon or evening. You can pay their 20kr a day or annual membership (I forget the price) for the "fancier" boardgames or expansion packs. Or, like me, you can enjoy their more than sufficient free shelf of games (my fav are Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne). Lots of seating options, and even a back room with couches. Since it's a boardgames oriented place, you'll get the most out of it if you're a group of 2-5 (3 or 4 is optimal, any more and less will be a problem with number of players). Food is reasonable. I quite like their fries, which are tasty and generaously sized for 35 kr. It's not a place I would go to alone to relax or work. It's not nearly cozy enough (nor is the coffee good enough) for that. But it's amazing for a group of friends together.

Yelp
Love the fact that they have a looot of games in this cafe! Although for most of them you have to pay (25 kroner per person). We chose to play the free game which in the end made us confused how to play it. Worry not, there was our saviour, the game master, who taught us how to play the game that we chose. Afterwards, the fun was there to stay. Their fries were nice too. The chili one with remoulade dip was out of this world! YuM!

Marianna B.

Yelp
This place is really nice but really crowded, if you get a seat you are really lucky! I went there with my boyfriend and we were really hungry so we ordered the nachos and the fries. The food was really good and big sizes snacks. The place is really amazing, you can choose on all kinds of table games, between free or "to pay" ones. I would really raccomand a visit, nice for groups or for couples.

Yelp
Love board games, but think that the games themselves are rather expensive to own? Then Bastard Cafe must be your destination in the weekend with family and friends. You can get the one-day pass for 25 kr, or get the annual membership for a mere 125 kr (cmiiw) and get to take a guest for free. For that you can play any kind of board games you desire of in this place. I love the concept that you can drink some beer (or coffee for that sake) and play games with friends, it seems such an innocent fun, compared to other outings that perhaps involve more alcoholic drinks or of more dangerous nature *smirk*. The fries are good for 35kr and the nachos are even better for 65kr. The portions are huge so make sure you share it with friends for good time, just like the games. I am not a board game nerd, but I won't resist if any of friends drag me here for a board game day indoor.

Yelp
Perfect place for a couple of friends to hang and play some board games. There is a wide selection from the free to play section which was more than enough to keep us occupied for hours. It was still very busy on a Sunday evening but we managed to get a table in one of the lounges. The games are a little worn and old due to all the love it's received but still playable and contains all necessary pieces. Atmosphere is casual and quirky, nice vibe and good selection of drinks. Not so many options on the food menu so would recommend grabbing a bite to eat first if hungry. Will definitely be a place to visit again and again!

Anna E.

Yelp
They have a huge theft problem. If you visit this bar be alert at all time! Be careful and keep your personal items as close to you as possible. Bastard Café needs to do more about the number of items stolen from their café every night. We had an incident where an iphone 6s, wallet, and purse were stolen very quickly and when we reached out for security footage, they said they experience about seven phones and laptops on average a night being stolen. Since there were too many, they were unable to help us gain access to security footage.

Lucinda H.

Yelp
It is my friends' and my favorite place to hangout because not only the board games are amazing but also the hot chocolate/ hot coco!!! Love it a ton!!!

Maria G.

Yelp
This place was a great place. I grew up playing lots of board games, but surprised to find out there were so many international board games I didn't know. It is too bad that they charge 25kr for one player. I mean it is okay if you know which game you want to play (we wanted the Uno Card, but it was not available). We couldn't find Monopoly. Also some board games that we knew available only in Danish. The three of us didn't have that much knowledge of many of the board games. The game guru was only there after 7pm (at least when we were there). So we ended up with the Hanabi (card game). Thankfully by the time we decided we wanted to give it a try, the guru was there to help us. First try we scored so low that was below a novice level LOL. Second try, after have set up some ground rules (apparently, you can make up one), we managed to score so high that it was the legendary level. Yeah, we pretty much believe that, the rules we set was a cheat (well, we were even sucked at cheating, lol). The point is, this place is great for a group of friends, just like many reviewers have said. French fries with chilli powder were good, though their nachos were really small, and way too expensive, about 70DKK Overall, need to re-visit ^^

Yelp
Great place. I spent a fun couple of hours here with my friend as part of a trip to Copenhagen and loved playing Danish Cluedo. The gløgg (Danish mulled wine) went down a treat too. The atmosphere is fun and friendly, and it was packed when we went on a Saturday around 8pm.

Wren M.

Yelp
The most board games in one place I've ever seen in my life. A fun place for locals and tourists, I would really recommend it. Their free game section is extensive, so you won't have to pay for anything but some food and drink if you can't afford it.
google avatar

Yelp
I went there on a Friday night around 9pm with some friends and we had a great time! The space inside is surprisingly large and it was packed with people playing all sorts of board games, card games, etc. There are plenty of free games to play and "game gurus" go around to help people out with choosing games. Drink prices were reasonable with the cheapest at 28kr. (bottled Carlsberg). I heard it's a great place to come earlier in the day as well to relax and hang out with friends with a cup of coffee and some board games.
google avatar

Yelp
Bastard Café? With a name like that, I had to step inside. The geek in me loves this place. It's definitely hygge (Google it). I ended up playing a game of chess with this cute Danish girl. The coffee was decent and so was the "Big Bastard Toast of Doom" which is a triple-decker-double-cheese-double-meat toast. Yeah, this place is fraking super hygge! And I won the chess game.

Lauren C.

Yelp
I don't know why it took me so long to head over to Bastard Café. I'm a big fan of board games, so I should have no excuse! Bastard Café is an unpretentious place for people of all ages to enjoy a relaxed (or intense, depends on what game you play) night out. The crowd at Bastard Café varies from young teens, couples, groups, older individuals, etc. They have practically every board game imaginable and you can play them all at a reasonable price with their yearly membership. You don't have to be hardcore gamer to have a fun time at Bastard Café but they have games to suit the tastes of casual players as well.

Yelp
I love the concept of this place: you come here to play games while having snacks or drinks. They have all the major international and danish board games as well as some one-offs. To play, you have to pay 25 kr for one day or just go ahead and get yourself a year's membership for 125 kr (valid for you AND one guest). They also have some free games you can play, which sit on a shelf marked by yellow tape. As for the cafe itself, they have the usual easygoing beers on tap as well as some nice-looking bottles from Rocket Brewing Co. The hot chocolate was surprisingly nice with whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate, tiny marshmallows, and a little twix on the side. I also got to try the crunchy fries with chili powder and they were great; perfect to fuel a game further with only slightly greasy fingers. If you happen to need more players for your game, you can go up to the bar and get a sign that says so. Seems like a great way to meet new people with like interests. And if you have trouble figuring out a new game, the 'game gurus' can explain it to you. I definitely plan to come back as often as I can!

Chris W.

Yelp
I like the atmosphere, or vibe, of this place. It's a great concept. Play board games with your friends and drink beer and maybe get a quick snack. There should be more of these in the U.S. It's a very hygge space.
