The Biddeford branch of this restaurant is in the basement at the back of a hotel in an urban setting - so needless to say, it's not convenient to get to. The room is attractive, though the music was too loud for us to carry on a conversation when we entered.
The server DID turn the music down to the point that we could converse and, much to the credit of the staff, they did NOT turn it up again during our meal. While conversation was never easy, it was possible.
Otherwise, the room was attractive and the padded chairs appreciated. Room lighting was dim, but each table had a bright battery powered LED light in the middle - an absolute necessity.
Our server was happy, skillful and attentive.
One of our party ordered the seared broccolini (lemon, parmigiana, salsa verde) - and it was excellent - perfectly cooked but not overcooked, and with the lemon tang beautifully complementing the main ingredient. The other hoes-d'oevre we received was the Potato Terrine - a crispy layered potato dish, and again it was very well executed.
2 of us ordered the Beet Salad - this is a baby kale salad with beets - not a salad OF beets. And, it's a wonderful one. The addition of figs, apple, and even duck made for a unique and delicious meal. I ordered the Coq au Vin pot pie. Again, another terrific dish - a large portion baked and delivered in a VERY hot cast iron skillet. The crust was buttery and light, fairly thick but the pastry was so delicious that I was glad of it. The contents were dense shredded chicken carrots and sauce - that wine undertone was definitely there, though it was not pronounced. It was simply a high quality pot pie.
As to desserts, two ordered mocha the pot de creme with hazelnuts. The body of the dish was a bit thin, but the flavor was as good as it gets, and the hazelnuts were a lovely addition. I ordered the apple crisp - it was good, but wasn't entirely to my taste. The apple filling was sweet/tangy and utterly lovely, but the crisp on top wasn't particularly nice - lots of little hard nuggets. And, a generous drizzle of caramel on the scoop of vanilla ice-cream was not the welcome addition it had sounded when I read the menu.
So - inconvenient location, loud music, and darned good food. We each had enough left for a second meal - and given today's prices, that's no small consideration.
