Best Restaurants in Oakland Chinatown Open for Takeout and Delivery - Eater SF

"One of just a handful of Cambodian food spots in the East Bay, Battambang offers proof that Chinatown isn’t just about the Chinese food — and hasn’t been since this family-run restaurant first arrived in the neighborhood in the early ‘90s. The menu has a number of Thai standards too, but you’ll serve yourself well if you stick to the Cambodian dishes: the smoky soft-cooked eggplant and the amok trei — catfish steamed inside a banana leaf with lemongrass curry." - Luke Tsai

Based on a friend’s recommendation, I treated myself to a meal at Battambang on a weekday afternoon. I was welcomed by the wonderful owner, who clearly puts so much love and care into her restaurant and her food! I highly recommend the soup—I had the tamarind soup with catfish and prawns, and my friend swears by the lemongrass soup with catfish. You can’t beat this fresh, delicious, home style Cambodian cooking and welcoming atmosphere!

Foods were phenomenal and taste authentic. True Cambodian food, especially the soup (highly recommended). It’s a bit creamy, bright, hearty, and sweet and sour from the pineapple. Harmony of flavors packed in one soup. It’s called Samlaw Ktiss. The soup can be shared between 3-4 ppl

This place was a pleasant surprise! I wanted to have some Cambodian food and was recommended this place by a few people. I definitely wasn't disappointed. The food was all fresh and flavourful, and their smoked eggplant dish is hands down my favourite. The service is friendly and fast. The restaurant is a pretty cozy spot and is fairly small on the inside. Overall, I'd highly recommend checking this place out!

We’re from Chicago, coming to visit SF. It’s rare to find authentic Cambodian restaurant or Cambodian restaurant in the US. This restaurant serve Cambodian cuisines that taste just as delicious as homemade Cambodian food.

Hole in the wall place that's easy to miss but has some unique dishes and large portions. The specialty section on the menu has a lot of interesting things. Staff is super nice and service is surprisingly fast. We got papaya salad, chicken curry, and smoked eggplant. I've never seen the smoked eggplant dish in a restaurant before and I highly recommend it. The seasonings on everything is balanced.

Great gem! Really enjoyed this restaurant a lot and it was my first time there. We came for dinner and ordered a few dishes but they all tasted delicious and well seasoned. Papaya salad was yummy but I recommend adding a healthy amount of pepper flakes and it will taste so much better. The beef skewers were amazing and goes well with rice. The Cambodian noodles was good too and we would definitely come back to try other dishes.

Google
Tasty Cambodian food from a long-time Oakland favorite. We ordered the smoked eggplant, Battambang noodles with tofu, and their Lemongrass pork. The noodles and eggplant were delicious. The pork was a bit dry, but had good flavor. The service was extremely friendly. We will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

Google
Uber and Battambang/Rip-Off😭 Delivery was smooth and on time. The restaurant 👎🏾! Visiting friends , just got in from 4 hours on Amtrak , only had yogurt all day. Ordered appetizer sampler ,red curry with duck and house fried rice with two proteins -shrimp and pork! For the life of me can’t figure out why you don’t automatically get steamed rice to go with the Curry! 😳If I had not ordered the fried rice I would’ve had nothing to go with the Curry! Any who why do I get only 2 shrimp after paying extra for shrimp?!Called Uber and they thanked me so much for letting them know(like it’s an experiment!) & how much it will help them. They’ve had other complaints about this place🙀Why are they still on your restaurant list Uber Ripoff?!!I want my money back for the shrimp!!!Corporate greed at a new low with sub- standard restaurants!Pics of appetizers, “ fake” rice and duck red curry! Edit - Uber did refund the fried rice with 2 shrimp!!

Yelp
Battambang consistently stays at one of the top places to dine whenever I want to treat myself to something other than a salad or sandwich. It's within walking distance from my work and the Trorb Trung Kor - Grilled* Baked Eggplant with shrimp and ground pork, stays as a top 5 item to crave during lunch. Restaurant staff is always friendly and able to deliver within 10-15 minutes from ordering, which is always appreciated since our lunches are short. They have kept their décor minimal with simplicity, cleanliness, and brightly lit indirect lighting set up. They have also managed to keep their prices grounded (like a good Costco $1.50) making their value unparalleled despite the CPI adjustments and increases of the price of ingredients in the recent year. I love knowing that I am supporting local businesses and other hardworking Asian establishments when I dine at Battambang.

Yelp
Thanks fellow Yelper for recommending this restaurant. The lady serviced us was friendly and cheerful. We ordered the papaya salad and lamb curry. The waiting time was minimal. We were offered vegetable soups before the main dishes. Light and tasty. Both dishes were full of flavor with descent portion. I got disappointed after finding out my papaya salad wasn't the traditional version like one of the Yelper posted. The lady said the original one had stronger flavor because of the sauce, and next time I can ask for it. I wish the option was provided on the menu. Though the "Americanized" one was good.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. I've been here about 3 times now and the food has always been amazing. It doesn't seem to get too packed so you can always be seated quickly. Highly recommend everyone check this place out and their lunch specials are great.

Yelp
Very great, attentive and friendly service, the food was delicious and flavorful, what else could you ask for this is my new favorite Cambodian spot to come eat at ! Love it here!

Yelp
Came to visit the Bay area and explored the Oakland Chinatown area. We found this and it was a great find! It was our first time trying Cambodian food and it is delicious! The staff is very kind and attentive. We ordered a noodle dish with a delicious thick sauce (#70 on the menu) and for dessert we ordered the fried bananas-- DELICIOUS! Definitely Recommended!

Yelp
Two of my sisters were already at Battambang for lunch. Lunch was at 1 PM. I arrived late around 1:45 PM, as I was having breakfast with several lady friends at another restaurant and we did not leave until 1:20 PM. Battambang's cuisine is Cambodian. Its location is within Oakland Chinatown. Because I was full from a heavy breakfast, I ordered an appetizer, #31 Num Banchou (Chicken & shrimp rice crepe). Description of the appetizer: Savory rice flour crepe filled with ground chicken, shrimp, bean sprout and onion served with a sweet vinegar fish sauce and peanut. It came with a small salad greens and sliced cucumber. The crepe was slightly crispy and delicious. Price: $10.95, excluding tax. My sisters had the grilled pork and eggplant dishes. I can only guess those two dishes were on point. They enjoyed them and had some leftover. Service was prompt and I did not wait long for my scrumptious appetizer. The waiter brought out the menu twice, as I needed to know the name and description of the tasty appetizer. Ambiance: casual and comfy. Nice artwork on the wall. Seating capacity is probably around 40 to 50 people. Drawback: parking is problematic. Street parking does not exist on a main thoroughfare such as Broadway. I believe the closest public parking garage is at the Pacific Renaissance Center, which is approximately two blocks east of this location. Return visit? Yes! This restaurant is a change from dining on Chinese cuisine constantly. It is near my brother's home.

Yelp
My friends and I have dined at Battambang for lunch a couple of times now and really enjoyed the food and service. We came on weekdays both times as we were told Battambang is busy on weekends, which is understandable as the food is delicious & the price points are affordable. It was a wet chilly day this afternoon when we got to Chinatown and the choices were Chinese hotpot or Battambang - I said the person that pays is the decision maker so it was Battambang. The lunch specials are great deals so give them a try. We ordered 6 dishes this time, 4 from the regular menu and 3 lunch specials: sausages, chicken curry, Battambang noodles, pan-fried trout, shrimp & veggies skewers and the beef skewers. That sounds like a lot of food for 3 people but it was barely enough; we ate everything. We absolutely recommend this place for good Cambodian cuisine.

Yelp
This is only my second or third time trying Cambodian food, but I enjoyed my lunch here. I stopped by with a friend for lunch on Friday. It was pretty empty around noon when we arrived, and a couple more parties trickled in later, but overall it was fairly quiet. They offer lunch specials Monday to Friday, 11-3 pm, which come with rice and a soup. We shared a couple of items: #29 slarb muan baouk (stuffed chicken wing) for $12.95 #94 amok trei (steamed catfish custard) for $18.95 #7 kari sach ko (beef curry) on lunch menu special for $16.95 We started off with the complimentary soup for the lunch special, which was flavorful and light. It comes with plenty of tofu and veggies, so I appreciated the healthy start to the meal. The stuffed chicken wings were really good. They take out the bone from the wing and stuff it with ground pork and bean thread, among other things. It's definitely a very unique way to eat chicken wings! The beef curry was pretty standard. It comes with beef and a good amount of veggies in a red curry sauce, which we asked to be mild. What was really interesting was the amok trei. According to the description, the dish consists of thinly sliced catfish in a coconut lemongrass egg custard, steamed in a banana leaf. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but the catfish meat was very tender and flavorful. The texture was mushy, which was unexpected. The lemongrass flavor really comes through in the dish. Would definitely recommend for others to try as it's very unique. It's a smaller portion too, so it's a good complement to heartier dishes like curry or noodles. I think Battambang is a solid lunch spot in Chinatown/Old Oakland!

Yelp
I absolutely love Battambang it was love at first bite! This is one of those hidden gem that's a staple in Oakland Chinatown. I ordered the smoked eggplant and let me tell you I was blown away by the flavors in this dish. Not only was it smokey and tangy, it was perfectly seasoned and a perfect pairing for the bed of rice it came with. The portion was huge too, I had enough eggplant to take hole for dinner! I also loved the soup that came with this dish, it was a clear broth with vegetables and a little bit of black pepper. It was a great appetizer! Battambang is a small restaurant that has a cozy vibe to it. It's not too brightly lit and has various paintings on the walls. The service was wonderful as well! The servers were very patient when you asked them questions about the dish. They didn't check on you much unless you needed more water, but I had no issues with that.

Yelp
My friend and I went here for dinner. This is our first time ever getting Cambodian food! We decided to get the special, Amok Trei and the crab fried rice. Both are really good. The Amok Trei is a a steamed catfish custard. It was really good! It was was not fishy, and very flavorful. The crab rice was good too. There were noticeable chunks of crab in the crab fried rice. We also got dessert - the ice cream and the Amok Knor, which is a jackfruit custard. I personally love jackfruit, so wish there were more jackfruit chunks, but it's alright. The custard was warm and it was a nice contrast with the cold ice cream. We enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend to other people!

Yelp
After searching for a Cambodian restaurant to eat on a Monday, finding one that was open took three tries. My boyfriend and I were relieved to find Battambang since everywhere else we went advertised that they were open but were not. Sat in Oakland's Chinatown, Battambang is a quaint Cambodian restaurant offering a variety of dishes. My boyfriend and I got Smoked Eggplant, Salaw Machu Kreung, and Twako (Cambodian Sausage). The Smoked Eggplant had eggplant and pork slathered in a stir-fry sauce. It was a good yet hefty dish that filled my boyfriend up. The Salaw Machu Kreung was sour and relieving. They asked if we were fine with them using asparagus in place of watercress and it worked perfectly for the dish. The twako reminded me of my grandma because she used to make it all the time. It tasted exactly like how she made it, but of course with several adjustments. The twako was sour and fragrant, which paired well with a bowl of rice and pickled cabbage and carrots. Great Cambodian business to come support if you are in the area! Come try if you're looking to experience a good home-cooked meal!

Yelp
Battambang saved us! My girlfriend and I drove to Oakland on a Monday afternoon to have some good Cambodian food only for all of them to be closed on Mondays. Thankfully, Battambang, located in the heart of Oakland's bustling Chinatown, was open. I was even more lucky to find parking right in front of the restaurant. The server at the front was incredibly kind to us, seating us immediately and attending to our every need. The restaurant's interior was modest but well thought out, with paintings and sculptures representing Cambodian culture. We got the Smoked eggplant, Salaw Machu Kreung, and Tawko (Cambodian Sausage). The Salaw Machu Kreung was my favorite, a perfect blend of sour and savory broth that just soothed my palette. The Twako was well-cooked and flavorful as well. I got the smoked eggplant and, personally, did not enjoy it nearly as much as the first two. It was heavy and oily and I didn't really like the taste.

Yelp
For my office lunch, someone suggested we grab Battambang. I am so glad she did and that I got the privilege to experience their Troub Trung Kor, which was recommended by the staff person I spoke to when making my order. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS. My mind may have been blown. I don't know if I've had anything like it before. It is sweet, savory, fishy, tangy, and perfect. The person on the phone said the food would be ready in 10 minutes. We walked over and the food was all ready and we were warmly greeted. My Coworker said that the inside has looked the same, and it was such a pleasant escape from Broadway. I look forward to eating here next time I visit. Now, the problem will be making sure I go with enough people to try multiple dishes. My mouth is literally watering now, and I can't wait for my next visit!

Yelp
A friend had recommended Battambang for me, so I decided to order ahead online via Uber Eats for pickup for a Wednesday lunchtime. The food was ready significantly early based on the notifications I got. I ordered a sauteed lemongrass over rice with tofu, asked for no peanuts in the requests/comments, which I'm grateful they abided by. I really like lemongrass flavor in general, and this dish was really good - very flavorful, the generous amount of white rice was definitely necessary for balancing out the strong salty and tangy taste of the sauce. There was both tofu and an assortment of vegetables including green onions, bell peppers, green beans. I enjoyed it and thought it was a good portion for the price.

Yelp
Battambang is only a block and a half away from the Marriott Hotel. My coworker has never had Cambodian food before, so we decided to go there for dinner. Best decision ever! The food was absolutely delicious! We had the Sampler Appetizer Platter: Pork Egg Rolls, Imperial Rolls, Stuffed Chicken Wing & Rice Crepe w/dipping sauce. We also had Sach Chrouk Aing (Grilled Slice Pork) and Bye Char (House Fried Rice w/Chicken). The Grilled Pork also came with a dipping sauce. That sauce was the bomb! It enhanced the flavor of the grilled meat. We even put it on the Fried Rice. It added so much more flavor to an already delicious dish. I especially loved the flavor of Thai Basil in the fried rice. The restaurant was small, clean, cozy, and comfortable. The tables had white table cloths under glass tops. Each table had a small vase of red carnations. The Server was friendly. He was attentive. I highly recommend them to anyone who's looking for flavorful food!

Yelp
This Cambodian restaurant is my fave out of the few in the East Bay. (Mostly Oakland, Alameda.) This one we feel is less crowded. It sucks we still have to pay meter outside for parking, but actually it's not that bad. Hope one day they validate parking. We continue to come to this spot & take my husband's dad out when we come visit. Big portions of regular menu food. Lunch special is a bit pricy though.
google avatar

Yelp
The Cambodian food here is wonderful. Just delicious. & I have been to this spot before but I didn't get a chance to leave a review . Service was remarkable. I came in & instantly got seated. I placed my order with no problem. The ambience gives off a soft, cultural, & relaxing vibe. To start off with I had some crab fried rice and some loc loc / cube steak & fresh watermelon on the side (watermelon not on the menu) .Loc loc is one of my favorite dishes on the menu . So when you're downtown Oakland California stop by & have lunch or a lunch special you will love it .

Yelp
Service is so nice! Vietnamese iced coffee Eggplant lunch special Curry seafood lunch special Catfish custard in banana leaf $72 We liked all the food The curry was most flavorful. The catfish is unique and glad we tried it. The eggplant was kinda blah. The potions were generous (except the catfish was pretty small). You get a nice cabbage soup in broth for lunch special This is a very easy walk from 12th street Oakland Bart station
google avatar

Yelp
I heard good things about this place, so my spouse and I stopped by since it is a short walk from 12th Street BART. We decided to share the following items so we wouldn't have leftovers: Sampler Appetizer Platter - If you can't choose which appetizer you get, this is the platter for you! The pork eggroll was yummy and crispy (it reminded me of lumpia). The Imperial Roll was a little light on flavor, but I liked it, especially the soft texture of the rice wrap. The rice crepe was really bland, so it was my least favorite item. The Stuffed Chicken Wing was good though also light in flavor (which I didn't mind). The skin was soft (not crispy). Crab Fried Rice - This was pretty good. I would have liked it to have a stronger flavor (maybe more pepper, but still qualify as not spicy). I like that you can see the real pieces of crab they use as well as the texture of the rice (slightly chewy, not mushy). Overall, I would say the food was generally light in terms of flavor, but I was fine with. I love that all of their dishware is reusable, and I look forward to coming back and trying out other items. ECO NOTES (Dine-In) Dine-In Dishware: Reusable plates and bowls Napkins: Reusable cloth napkin Utensils: Metal fork and knife Water cups: Glass cups (no straw)

Yelp
Batambang Cambodian Restaurant remains one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland. They are family-run and have held prices down as well as any place can. They are open for lunch and dinner, and are conveniently located neat 8th street on Broadway in downtown Oakland. If you haven't tried Cambodian food yet, it is lot like Thai and Viet Namese food, very tasty, full of good ingredients, and as spicy as you choose. Their food is always fresh and delicious. Providing a wide variety of dishes, including vegan options, fish, fowl, beef, lamb and pork, almost everyone will find dishes that delight. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, but very clean, attractive, and welcoming, even of large parties. (Though 10-12 people is probably the comfortable max.) We especially like their Grilled Pork (#40), Green Papaya Salad, and the Eggplant and Catfish dishes. And they have what has become one of my all-time favorite deserts, Amok Nur, which is a coconut custard featuring jackfruit chunks. This is served warm, and is definitely worth a try! Batambang has a good selection of beers, and does OK on wines, but like most Asian restaurants, their wine list is not their strong point. But their Sweet Iced Tea, which is very much like Thai Iced Tea, is a delight. The service is also quite wonderful, and over time you get to meet and know the entire gracious family, all of whom are eager to please.

Yelp
Excellent food. The staff is friendly and very attentive. The menu is very interesting and you can't go wrong with the lamb - absolutely the best!

Yelp
We had the fresh shrimp spring rolls. They were good and the price was reasonable for two rolls cut in half. We also had the soft shell crab. So good!!! The service was prompt and courteous. Their exterior signage needs a refresh but the inside was clean and orderly. Would go again.

Yelp
I regularly go to receptions at a photo gallery on 8th Street. Either before or after the opening receptions we enjoy eating. I like to try places nearby where I am going. Walking about 4 blocks on 8th Street I was surprised at how deserted Chinatown and Broadway were on a Friday night. When we got to the restaurant the first thing I saw was a sign warning people about car break-ins. I came here with three friends we each ordered a dish to share. We had rice, chicken wings, eggplant, and beef salad. The chicken and eggplant were good; the tender beef salad was wonderful. I am sorry that I did not write down more of what went into each dish. The food was well executed. If I go back I will have the beef salad again and try something else on the menu. The service was attentive. The restaurant is small, attractive, and clean. Street Parking is difficult, although as deserted as it was on a Friday night it might not be difficult.

Yelp
Needed a last-minute dinner place for a large group. I got REALLY lucky. Here was my experience. AMBIANCE: Parking: Downtown Oakland so your best bet is street parking or one of the parking structures. Seating: Inside seating with room for about 50 people. Great for groups or pairs. Vibes: You're in Oakland-Chinatown, welcome! You're close to Oakland Marriott City Center so relatively close to other pleasant things as well such as Jack London Square, Lake Merritt, and other eateries. The spot itself is pretty neat. You're welcomed with plenty of plants and cultural art and decor of Cambodia. Great place to grab lunch or dinner whether you're going solo or a large group (call ahead of time). FOOD: 19. Nhorm Lahong - Papaya Salad (Recommend A nice refreshing mix of shredded green papaya, carrot, fresh mint, peanut all tossed in lime sauce. For a different spin on a non-green salad appetizer, this is is a good choice. 29. Slarb Muan Baouk (Recommend) A flavorful mix of well cooked chicken wings stuffed with ground pork, peanuts, bean thread, and onion. Simple ingredients but intricate and flavorful delivery! 44. Kari Duong Chkei (Recommend) A curry with green beans, pleasant hints of coconut from the coconut meat, and yam with our choice of tofu. 75 Avocado Rolls (Recommend) A nice refreshing appetizer with soft and cold rice vermicelli, lettuce, bean sprouts, fresh mints, and avocado. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Navi was great! She was professional and friendly! TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Fantastic! I enjoyed my experience here. The food was delicious, I enjoyed the range of choices, prices were reasonable, and the experience was pleasant. There are a lot of eateries in the area but if you're looking for a wide range of food this is your spot! Thank you again, Navi and team for a wonderful experience! TIPS: * Soo many choices, I'd suggest going with a friend to mix and match.

Yelp
One of the worst meals I've had in a long time. Starting from the soup to the way over marinated lemon grass skewers it's like you're eating lemongrass and not meat. Just a mouth full of marinade Disappointing because five or six years ago this place was quite a bit better

Nancy T.

Yelp
Not the best. Every dish was just off. Can't decide if its Thai or Cambodia or Lao. Dont think its anywhere near 4 much less 4.5?! More like 3.5 at best.

Yelp
I've had this place once and decided to have it again for a group party. We ordered takeout and everything was ready exactly when they said - only took 20 min for them to whip up 7 things! We got: 19. Nhorm Lahong - this was a generous salad. quite big, quite tasty - 7/10 31. Num Banchou - reminded me of a vietnamese appetizer (this one was an omlette style stuffed with ground pork and bean sprouts) - 8/10 40. Sach Chrouk Aing - great flavors but was a little plain (literally just sliced meat with a smal side of salad) - 8.5/10 51. Char Kgnei w/chicken - i was shocked at how small this was but it was very flavorful (almost too salty). If you like ginger, you will see a ton of it in this dish - 7/10 68. Bye Chah Sach Kdam - yum and would get again. Flavors were there! 8.5/10 69. Kuy Teu Chah - also yum - 8.5/10 86. Trorb Aing - smoked eggplant is what I remember having in the past and they delivered just as high qual so many years later! Come support this local family (?) restaurant!

Yelp
Highly recommended to me by a friend and within walking distance for lunch at the Marriot. Why not? And my colleague and I were delighted with our food. My colleague had the Kari Sach Samut. She had to stop several times while eating just to praise how delicious her food was, noting how several of her closest relatives were missing out on an amazing meal. I concurred. The Battambang noodles were delicious. Although I didn't stop much until I had inhaled the whole plate. I wish I lived near this place. I will come back if ever given the chance.

Yelp
Banana blossom soup is so good! Love this spot. We were able to find street parking right on Broadway. We will be back.

Yelp
Still great food for good value! Had the egg rolls with a side of rice. Enough for a meal and afternoon snack. Same lovely lady taking orders. Knows her regular costumers and what they order. Ambiance is good enough for date night. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We were visiting our son in Oakland after just returning from our trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. We fell in love with the food in Cambodia and wanted to let our son experience the flavors so we dropped into Battambang. Our meal was delicious and very authentic to what we had just experienced on our trip. We ordered the Lemongrass Sour Soup with Fish, the Lamb Curry, The Vegetable Curry, and the Smoked Eggplant and all four dishes knocked it out of the park. So good. Service was very friendly and fast. Highly recommended

Yelp
I highly recommend this restaurant. It was so nice to have a healthy, delicious meal, with a friendly atmosphere. It's a very close walk to the Marriott. They were so nice to me and the food was fresh, clean, and delicious.

Yelp
I think the main thing I found eating at this restaurant was the warmth of the server/owner when she made us feel at ease and talk about Cambodia. It is a cozy small restaurant with good food. We tried the amok trei (steamed catfish custard in banana leaf) and the sampler platter from appetizers menu, both of which are well presented. The taste was on the mild side, but could well be attributed to what Cambodian food tastes like. The crepe and spring rolls tasted very fresh as if plucked from a garden.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service. Sometimes they are packed during weekday lunch time. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Battambang is an authentic Cambodian restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and a friendly staff. We started with the Sampler Appetizer Platter, which came with each of their four appetizers including mini fried pork egg rolls, an imperial roll (shrimp, lettuce, and rice noodles wrapped in rice paper), a chicken wing stuffed with ground pork, and a yellow rice flour crepe with a filling of ground chicken, shrimp, and bean sprouts. The Sach Chrouk Aing was a dish of thick grilled pork slices in a delicious lemongrass marinade; and the Bye Char Sach Kdam was crab fried rice, which had a deep, umami, savory flavor and came with generous chunks of shredded crab meat. But my favorite dish of all was the Amok Trei (the national dish of Cambodia), made of catfish slices in a coconut lemongrass custard, steamed in a banana leaf bowl. The custard had a silky texture and amazing aroma from the lemongrass and spices, and the coconut milk on top added a nice creaminess to the dish. The Amok Trei was a definite highlight, but everything we had was on point and delicious!

Yelp
I've been here at least twice, possibly three times. Unfortunately, the last time I came, with my parents, was a long time ago. The food is delicious. The first (or second) time I came here, I was either celebrating my birthday or all of us with March birthdays were celebrating our birthdays collectively. The service was a little spotty that time, but the second (or third) time, it was excellent. The person who took our order (also the owner?) when I came with my parents was very patient with all their questions, and she helped them choose dishes they really enjoyed. It's a cute little restaurant. There's nothing fancy about it, and other than the '80s-office-park drop ceilings, I wouldn't change a thing about the interior. I honestly don't spend much time in Oakland's Chinatown, but I would definitely return just for Battambang. Even when we came many years ago, it didn't feel like the safest neighborhood after dark. I don't imagine it has gotten any better now. I've always been able to find street parking very close to the restaurant, so there's that. This is one of three or four places I've tried Cambodian food, and it's probably my favorite one. The flavors are so interesting.

Yelp
I decided to try this place after a young lady on tick tok recommended. She said the food was great. Well I ordered the crab rice, shrimp rolls, papaya salad. The crab rice wasn't fresh it was really dry, fresh shrimp rolls was just okay , it was not great tasting and the salad was super dry and very plain looking. Not sure if this was a bad day or something. My order was picked up. I wanted it to work out, but it just didn't.

Yelp
I am blown away by this place. I normally don't go out of my way to get Cambodian food, but who knew I would find such an authentic place in Oakland? I ordered the Troub Trung Kor that consists of spicy eggplant and ground pork with a side of rice. The sweet, but citrusy flavor paired so well with a side dish of picked veggies (not pictured). For dessert, I ordered the mango sticky rice and a side of coconut ice cream--you need to get this ice cream. You can taste the chunks of young coconut and it is just divine. To top it all off, the waitress I had was incredibly attentive and sweet. I will definitely be coming back again!

Yelp
This is an updated review since I have not been here in years since COVID. If you are local please support. Times are so tough and they are still plugging along but its difficult. The owner is the sweetest lady and so friendly. The food is still bomb and I got my fav #9 eggplant. It is so incredibly delicious I have yet to find this dish or similar anywhere else. I also tried the crab fried rice since it looked so good in pics. Both were piping hot when I picked it up. Eggplant is the bomb! The crab fried rice was pretty tasty too. My daughter enjoyed it. Had good flavor. Usually I don't order fried rice for lack of flavor but this did not disappoint. Do give them a try if you haven't. Its such a hidden gem and worth it.

Yelp
OMG all food I ate at Battambang was so delicious (pictures attached) !! I had Naim chow (Fresh imperial rolls) and Num banchou ( chicken and shrimp rice crepe ) for appetizers and Troub trung Kor (smoked eggplant) and Bye char sach kdam (crab fried rice) for main. Then I had mango and sweet sticky rice for dessert. I ate all by myself, LOLOLOLOL!! The service was great. The owner lady was so sweet and kind:) The ambiance was great, too. I'll definitely come back:)

Yelp
This family-owned restaurant has a long legacy on the Broadway edge of Oakland Chinatown. They have really been struggling through the pandemic. They deserve and need your patronage to get through this. I just ordered the Eggplant with Tamarind Sauce and the Battambang's Special Stew (catfish, prawns and tofu in a black pepper stew). Both were excellent and full of flavor. I placed the order at 6 PM, and it was ready in 15 minutes. I swearI meant to take pictures of everything, but I stuffed everything into my mouth as soon as I got home and forgot! I promised myself I would eat half of the meal tomorrow, but I'm really wanting to eat everything today...

Yelp
The Thai tea was phenomenal, I didn't know I liked Thai tea til this day. My uncle Xman introduced me to this Cambodian restaurant and I'm so happy he did. The spring rolls were ok. The lamb chop was so freaking good, it was tender and well seasoned. I hope to be back soon but it is a little pricey. The ambiance was nice, very cool art on the walls you wouldn't know it by the store front.

Yelp
I am so glad that I had my first taste of Cambodian cuisine at Battambang in Oakland. Wow, a Texas boy feasting on Crab Fried Rice in the Bay! Who would have thunk it? On a quiet Saturday afternoon, my girlfriend and I saw this place on Yelp and decided to take that culinary adventure. Cozy and communal, this place felt very intimate to the point that we had a full-blown conversation with the owner, who was the nicest guy ever. He shared a little bit about his memories of Cambodia as well as gave us time to check out a book of photographs showing the bike life of Cambodia. As for the food, we had the kebab, crab fried rice, curry, and stuffed chicken wings. The food was well-seasoned and smooth with the sauces and the flavors; everything was hot and fresh, no microwave or reheating. The curry and fried rice were standard; however, the stuffed chicken wings were packed with noodles and other ingredients that I cannot identify due to my limited foodie language. Trust, just because I can't name it does not mean that you should not order it. Stuff your tummy with those chicken wings. If you have never had Cambodian food, then come here. Actually, if you have had Cambodian food, come here still. They say take my word "with a grain of salt!" No, I say, take my word with some Battambang.

Yelp
I was fortunately introduced to Battambang years ago by a very discerning Cambodian friend from Cambodia. Not only is their food always fresh and delicious, the owner and her family are always so welcoming, attentive and kind. Among our many favorites are crab fried rice, amok trei steamed fish in banana leaf, lok lak beef appetizer, somlaw machou peng seafood hot and sour soup and all the curries. Plenty of vegetarian options too. In addition to coming here with local friends and colleagues, my wife and I bring all of our family and friends whenever they're visiting from out of town. It's one of the few places we can share a delicious meal and comfortably hear each other to catch up. My friend since moved to SF, but still comes here when craving an authentic home cooked meal. She's gone to many others, including a popular Michelin mentioned spot, but says Battambang is still THE best in the Bay Area for taste, pricing and service. With many family owned small businesses in downtown Oakland, especially Chinatown, still struggling after Covid shutdowns and drastically reduced foot traffic, I highly recommend supporting this minority woman owned restaurant for both dine in and take out. Cheers!

Yelp
I first was taken to this restaurant 20 years ago. While everything in Chinatown seems to be a ghost town I was glad to see this one still open. I had a little over an hour for my appt and hadn't eaten lunch so stopped in. Small spot. The food has elements of Thai and Chinese. I just missed the lunch time so got a dinner entree which was fine cuz I ended up finishing the whole thing. I settled on duck curry. Usually the duck is cut up with bones and the fatty skin. Was pleasantly surprised of the shredded meat. The vegetables were fresh cut and ample rice provided. I love this curry because it's got a peanut butter based taste. Will return again

Yelp
First time here. Really good. One of my friend is vegan and other is pescatarian. They accommodated nicely for both. We had - eggplant with tamarind sauce. Asked for Vegan. Declicious - tofu screwers also yummy - vegetable crepe. I got the fish sauce on the side and they provided tamarind sauce for my vegan friend - lemongrass stirfry with prawn. Tasty. Wish there were a few more prawns Overall good and not too pricey.

Yelp
Battambang was my first Cambodian food experience and it most certainly won't be my last. With being featured on Michelin guide, Battambang serves high quality authentic Cambodian food. The menu is quite extensive with offerings from curries, noodles, fried rice, to seafood and veggie items. The service here is what sets this place apart from other restaurants. The inside feels so cozy, like a ma & pa kind of feeling. It feels like your auntie is in the back of the kitchen cooking your food for you. The older woman working at the time was nothing short of friendly, polite-she really made our experience feel very welcomed and enjoyable. Battambang noodles were a generous portion. Noodles had a nice chewy texture. Tamarind flavor was strong yet not overpowering. The chicken wasn't dry, but tender and added a strong protein to the dish. I just wish the noodles were sweeter or had more depth in flavor. The eggrolls were delicious and probably my favorite item of the three we ordered. Small, yet super crisp, the eggrolls were full of juicy flavor from the ground pork. Each order comes with 8, but they do go fast. I split the appetizer with my boyfriend but it still left me wanting more. The stuffed chicken wings were great. I didn't care for the meat stuffing or the glass noodles inside, but the chicken on the outside was perfectly seasoned and tender. I found the stuffing to be a bit bland and lacking in flavor. Portion sizes are pretty decent for most Cambodian restaurants, especially in the Bay area. We ordered 2 appetizers and an entree for the two of us and we left satisfied along with leftovers. Please please do check this place out if you're ever in Oakland, and continue to support your small local businesses. Restaurants like Battambang are what gives areas like these so much character and bring something culturally unique to Oakland.

Yelp
I loved their crab fried rice, papaya salad crushed not stirred, amok fish, and sour soup. My husband loves the smokey eggplant. One of our boy loved the beef skewers. The egg crepe was meh.
