Where to Eat and Drink After Hiking in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia | Eater DC

"This old-school, family-owned coffee house has been open since 2017, with breathtaking views from a backyard balcony. The food here leans into hearty and homestyle cooking, including sausage and gravy, ham-and-cheese pastries, and cinnamon buns decorated with caramel, bacon, and walnuts." - Kalina Newman

Despite the government’s snow warning shutting down most restaurants and shops, this café remained open and we catch before closing , welcoming us with warm hospitality. Their dedication to service, even in challenging conditions, truly stood out. We ordered a latte, hot chocolate, and a chocolate chip cookie. While we didn’t sit inside, the cozy atmosphere, beautifully decorated for Valentine’s Day, added to the experience. The hot chocolate had a rich, satisfying density, and the cookie, though a bit heavy, was generously portioned and delicious. The service was friendly and efficient, making us feel valued despite our small order. While the food wasn’t exceptional, the overall experience and warm ambiance made this place worth visiting. A solid 4-star spot that deserves recognition for its dedication to customers!

Google
Such a cute and quaint place. My wife and i stopped in the morning and got 2 lattes 1 pumpkin and 1 sf caramel, and they were awesome. The service was really fast and friendly. They have a neat little gift shop, and we had to get the room spray and candle because it smelled so so good. They offer lots of sandwiches and ice cream options. I wish I had to try. I highly recommend this place and will 100 percent be back

Google
I've been to Harper's Ferry many times, but never stopped here. When I visited in March, I made sure to stop in. I ordered a mountain top sandwich on gluten free bread which was very tasty! The staff was super friendly, and there was a nice outdoor patio area to enjoy the food. My only complaint was about the macaroons that I also bought. They were $10 for just three baby macaroons and they were the worst macaroons I have ever had. The flavor was decent, but they had clearly been sitting in the cold case for a while because they were practically rock hard and tasted very stale. I would not buy them again 🫤

Super cool cafe! Amazing breakfast sandwiches and iced coffe. Vegetarian options! Almond croissoint was amazing. Stopped by later for a milkshake and it was fantastic!

Google
So good we ate there 3 times in 2 days!! It was highly recommended by people we met, Yelp, Google, etc., so we had to try it. I had outstanding peach tea, a great breakfast sandwich on a bagel, an awesome chocolate muffin, and a Confluence sandwich. The Confluence is roast beef, swiss, horseradish, red onion, lettuce, and tomato on sourdough bread - absolutely outstanding! My companions loved the coffee, salads, and bagels as well. The staff is very friendly. You can eat inside or on the shaded outside patio, which was comfortable even on a hot day. Battle Grounds Bakery and Coffee is one of, if not the best place in Harpers Ferry.

Google
Do not pass this bakery by, you MUST try breakfast, lunch, or dinner here! I promise you will not be disappointed. Please read on... First time in Harpers Ferry, we hiked around a good bit and needed a little something to eat. We reviewed a lot of restaurant menus and the Battle Grounds Bakery & Coffee's sandwiches peaked our interests. We walked in and notice it was a cozy, cute place with outdoor seating as well. The staff was absolutely so kind and the  friendliest. Extremely helpful. But it doesn't stop there. We ordered the Mountain Top and London Fog Lattes for each of us. One had the Sourdough and I had the wheat. Lets start off with, this was the BEST sandwich I have ever had in my life. And I do not use that term lightly. I get it, how could a sandwich be that good? I asked the same thing to myself. I bet I'll be dreaming about it. Second, the size of this sandwich was so huge we could have shared one, but decided to take the other halves for dinner this evening and skip our reservations elsewhere (Yes! That good) which they graciously wrapped them up for us and gave us a cup of ice to keep them cold until we got to our hotel. The bread is freshly made, and was the softest, most fantastic flavor. We sampled each other's breads to brag who had the best. The bacon was crisp, the turkey was thickly layered (see pictures), the cheese they did not skimp on and was sharp and creamy, great tasting avacado, and the perfect amount of mayo, not too much, not too little. Just right. The London Fog Latte was absolutely perfect the most perfect combinations of flavors. We did not get any pastries, and I regret that decision now. I could not rave enough about this place! I'm sad we live 5 hours away. But I am so grateful to have had the pleasure to experience this place and able to tell you all about it. To help you out, I took pictures of the menu and listed their fall menu of drinks for you!

Google
We were at Harpers ferry historical national park on a beautiful evening and were looking for a coffee shop as we were getting cold. Found this “Battle ground bakery and coffee” shop. It’s a unique coffee shop the entrance itself showing it so.it’s very kids friendly, could take the stroller inside helped us with hot water and glasses for mixing the kids food, really helpful. Ordered some cappuccino, hot chocolate and muffin, coffee, chocolate muffin taste awesome, the ambiance inside is something we never experienced anywhere. Enjoyed every drop of coffee and the environment. Parking not right in front of the shop. Common parking area a little bit away. The counter staff is very polite and humble.

Google
We both got different hot sandwiches and both were very good! They put plenty of bacon on mine and it was cooked very well. The bread was fantastic. We walked in at the right time as there was quite a line when we were leaving. We'd definitely go back!

Yelp
Fresh, high quality food made to order, served with a smile, wonderful location and atmosphere loaded with charm!

Yelp
Visited Battle Grounds Bakery recently. Walking by, the smells were amazing. On our way back from our walk through Harpers Ferry, we stopped in and looked at the menu. My wife and mom drink coffee, so I requested two large coffees to go. I also requested a sausage, egg, and cheese croissant. It was busy, but the coffee was served quickly. The croissant took a few minutes. The coffee was piping hot. We took the food to go and walked back to our rental house. The sausage egg and cheese croissant was delicious. I wish I would've requested another one. My wife and mom loved the coffee. Next time we're in HF, we'll visit again. Great food. Great service.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Great food. We had the wrap and chicken salad and really liked both. Loved that they had gluten free chocolate chip cookies. I went back the next morning for an iced coffee and it was good too. Very nice staff.

Yelp
Battle Grounds Bakery & Coffee is one of the eateries you'll find in the the historic town of HF - their menu is actually pretty extensive in terms of offering breakfast plates, cold and hot sandwiches, and salads, as well as a beverage menu. Wasn't really a fan of some of the names they gave for their items... The place itself is super dark, and there are some counter seating that patrons seem to be just squatting without ordering to get some relief from the hot weather outside. Service could have been friendlier and more attentive. +limited counter seating +service could have been more friendlier

Yelp
I debated between 3 and 4 stars. Battle Grounds is nothing terribly special, but the quality is good. They bake their own bread for the lunch sandwiches, which is nice, but the bread doesn't really stand out for anything other than being sliced super thick. Vegan smoothies (made with almond milk) are excellent. Staff is very friendly. Outdoor seating is nice. Lunch sandwiches are big and could easily be shared. Breakfast sandwiches are nicely done.

Yelp
Where do I start? I've been to plenty of coffee shops, but this by far was the best. The warm inviting feeling soon as you walk in is indescribable. The staff are so pleasant and helpful. I initially ordered a Pumpkin latte with almond milk and it was fixed wonderfully, I just didn't like the taste, the staff was so kind, she simply made me a new one and the second go round I ordered a Cinderella latte and my goodness, it was perfect. The Cinderella latte texture was smooth and blended perfectly, the taste was light and it was very tasty. We also ordered the sausage egg and cheese on a waffle, OMG! I could've eaten two! If I'm ever in this area again, I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch while hiking a section of the AT with my brother and our dogs. First, let me say the service was fantastic and the staff, super friendly. It was raining and we were soaked and they didn't give us a hard time about being wet and having bulky bags, and they even gave us a rag so we could clean ourselves up a bit before eating. (Also gave treats for the dogs) Don't think that this review is just about service though. The food was killer!! We got sandwiches and cookies. The sandwhich were so so tasty, and very big. Bread is made fresh in-house and everything we got was just so tasty. I got the John Brown which was warm and satisfying. The cookies were also very good. I don't find myself in harpers ferry often, but next time I'm there I will 100% be back. On top of everything, even in a place with a captive audience, prices were super reasonable!

Yelp
Cozy bakery/cafe with delicious breakfast and lunch options! My husband and I stopped by here before hiking the Maryland Heights trail. The line was pretty long on a Saturday around 11 am. We ordered their special (bacon, cheese, chopped jalapeño, and a sweet jam on sourdough bread) and a red velvet cheesecake muffin/cupcake. The sandwich was very good and satisfying. Loved the combo of sweet and spicy. I appreciated how they asked if I wanted my muffin warmed up. Also, they give you a buzzer to let you know when your order is ready. While there's limited seating inside, we were able to grab a table outside and wait for our sandwich. We didn't get a chance to try their coffee, but we will definitely stop by next time we are in the area.

Yelp
This was the perfect spot for lunch or breakfast in harper's ferry and we stopped here multiple times on our weekend trip. Each time my friend and I both got sandwiches and drinks and were very pleased with the results. The sandwiches were very big and hearty and served on homemade bread which was perfect for us after a long morning of hiking. Both that I tried were tasty and they had some unique combinations. They also had a large variety of tea options and I thought their London fog was solid. I also got their lemonade which was very refreshing on a hot day. They have a small indoor space with AC and a few seats as well as a much larger outdoor area with umbrellas for shade. We tested out both and both were nice options depending on the weather. Everyone was friendly and helpful and our food came out relatively quickly! We would certainly return if we are ever in the area again!

Yelp
What a quaint and cute coffee shop located in the heart of Harper's Ferry. This is a perfect place to stop in for a refreshing cup of lemonade on a hot summer day. The staff are so kind and the service is quick. Come out to support this local business!

Yelp
This is the spot for coffee and a grab-n-go breakfast. It's warm and inviting, the staff is friendly and efficient. We went both mornings while in town for hiking and it's worth taking the extra steps up the hill to get to them! The lattes were wonderful and hot, and I love that they offer multiple options for a milk alternative. We had a bacon/egg/cheese croissant and it was flaky and delicious and made to order. There is a cute little patio outside to the left and inside there are wonderfully smelling candles and other little trinkets. They had some really great sounding sandwiches cheekily named after events/ghosts and famous persons from Harpers Ferry- we didn't try them but will be back for that Screaming Jenny!

Yelp
Stopped in today while visiting Harpers Ferry with my girlfriend and 8-year-old son. It was a dreary, cold and rainy November morning so this place was absolutely perfect. There was a big group ahead of us who ordered just about everything on the menu but the staff were still super quick and patient with getting our drinks ready. My son had the hot chocolate and we each had the pumpkin chai latte and all were perfect. Not too much indoor seating so we took our drinks to go, but still a great spot with a solid coffee house menu. We will definitely be back the next time we visit.

Yelp
Best coffee ever! I think it called pot of gold, it butterscotch and Carmel it so good! I love everyone who works there!!

Yelp
Walking through Harper ferry National park and accidentally stumble small town local Delights Coffee Tea Ice cream Fresh baked goods Wifi available Sandwiches Chai was delightful Honey cinnamon sticks - major win The wanderer - soothing perfect for the out of nowhere rain and thunder perfect for tourist local hidden gem And must get their fresh bake good especially when out of the oven! The cinnamon french toast - I wish can be shipped to home! Super glad for the afternoon snack caffeine run! Service was pleasant and delightful - very sweet ladies who worked there
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
The cafe is pretty small inside with a large raised counter on the left side with seating. The real gem of this cafe, other then the friendly service, the location, and the delicious coffee is the very large patio that you'll find outside the door to the right of the building. It underlooks (stares up at) the cliffs of Harpers Ferry and is just such a quaint perfect little spot to park and enjoy your coffee and pastries. This cafe is located in oldtown Harpers Ferry. So if you park at the bottom of the hill (which is kinda where you need to park) it is a handful and a half of stairs up to the cafe. But for the views and the adorable little small Americana packed town atmosphere - well worth it.

Yelp
I loved this place so much! I went for breakfast and had a breakfast sandwich and an iced latte. The sandwich was amazing and a reasonable price. It was very large and filling. I would highly recommend the sourdough for bread, as it is very delicious. They are very accommodating for gluten free orders. We ordered a gluten free sandwich and they made it separately so that there was no cross-contamination. It did take a couple extra minutes but they were very willing to do so. When we returned for lunch, the cashier had remembered us and informed us that they had just finished their batch of gluten free cookies. We had some, and they were amazing! We also had some smoothies that were made with real fruit so they were delicious. This place is absolutely perfect for a quick bite and would highly recommend if you are visiting!!
google avatar

Pat G.

Yelp
Love this place. The staff are absolutely AMAZING -- very friendly and helpful. Not to mention their lattes are part of the main reason we drive to Harper's Ferry to go hiking (for the victory latte). I had the Banana Split latte and it was absolutely delicious. My only complaint is that they don't offer a 25-30oz 'guzzler' option (just kidding). Definitely check this place out if you're in the area and want a quick snack, standard coffee, or custom latte!
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
The hike was a battle but this place made me feel grounded! This cute little coffee shop is great for post hike pick me ups- coffee, smoothies, sandwiches and even ice cream. The staff were really nice and incredibly accommodating of allergies. I got a dirty chai and it was a perfect amount of sweetness. The smoothie (a custom strawberry, mango and banana) was just what I needed post hike. They have wifi and a couple of stools. Great place to pop in and would definitely check it out (note: it's a the top of the hill so it's a bit of a trek but worth it!!)
google avatar

Shane M.

Yelp
The BLT Breakfast was pretty filling. The menu has a lot and you will definitely find something that catches your eye/interest. Friendly staff, would recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food. Great coffee. Friendly people. Definitely recommend if coming through West Virginia.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
This place is a cute shop in a cute little town. I would definitely recommend stopping by for coffee. I got the mountain top on pumpernickel. The bread was dry, but everything else taste good. I would recommend getting the bread toasted if you are getting a sandwich. Not sure if it's old or just altogether dry. My dirty chai latte was perfect. The menu listed a bunch of different bread options. We stopped on a Tuesday afternoon and the only had pumpernickel or sourdough.
google avatar

Mike Z.

Yelp
A nice small coffee shop that provided excellent service and a good mocha. The inside looked great, and they had outside seating area as well.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Very cute small shop with both drinks and food, plus candles and jams and such for sale. Staff is kind. Seating is bar style and is limited, but there were seats open when we came in.
google avatar

Yelp
Bottom Line: A cute little coffee shop serving coffee drinks, baked goods and breakfast sandwiches. My husband I visited Battle Grounds after an early morning of hiking in the area. We were excited to be able to get hot coffee and warm, hearty breakfast sandwiches after our adventure. I'm a black coffee drinker so I appreciate that they have good coffee. We both ordered a breakfast sandwich that was satisfying. I had egg, cheddar and sausage on an everything bagel. I had been hoping to have it on pumpernickel but they don't offer some of their bread choices until lunch time. The layout is a little odd. The bakery case is off to the side beyond where you stand to order. Had I seen it before I ordered I think I would have added a scone or something sweet to my post-hike meal. There are about six or so seats inside at a countertop and they have an outdoor deck. The deck is out the front door and around to the left. It would be nice if the deck was immediately accessible from the shop.

Jim C.

Yelp
Amazing breads and very affordable! Also had several baked goods that were also excellent c

Yelp
I decided to come by when visiting Harpers Ferry to grab a warm drink and pastry while waiting for my group to be seated at one of the nearby restaurants. I tried one of their signature beverages, and it was solid. I also got a nice large cookie that really hit the spot after hiking earlier that day. The lines were a bit long on my visit, but the service is definitely quicker here than waiting to be seated at the restaurants if the area is busy. I like the vibes of this coffee shop and would definitely come back on a future trip to Harpers Ferry to grab another quick bite.
google avatar

Kristy A.

Yelp
Cute bakery/coffee shop that was right around the corner from where we stayed. We stopped for breakfast and coffee, and had to give ourselves a little pep talk to not take a bunch of pastries home with us. We got breakfast sandwiches, which were pretty large. I thought the wheat bread was a little dry, but it was still a good sandwich overall. The layout was a little weird as far as the placement of the bakery case, the menus, and the ordering station; but no big deal overall. They had a little section of trinkets to peruse while waiting and 8 or so stools at a counter if you want to eat in.
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
For a quick bite to eat and a creative coffee to start your day, Battle Grounds has us covered. We only had a couple of hours to tour Harper's Ferry and we were delighted when we found Battle Grounds because not only was the selection of coffees huge but the banana split and Cookie Monster lattes were a perfect pick. The inside is cute and inviting, while the outside offers spectacular views of the Shenandoah!
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
Friendly service, great food, excellent iced pistachio oatmilk lattes! We love coming here.

Emily P.

Yelp
My fiancé and I love to visit coffee shops in our travels, and this has to be one of our favorites!! The staff is so friendly, the sandwiches are all fresh and creative, the lattes were the smokeshow of this place! I really appreciate a spot that knows how to make a carefully crafted drink rather than a sweet dessert drink. The outside dining area was a great spot to take Harpers Ferry in. Thank y'all!! much love
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place for a refreshing coffee or tea when visiting Harpers Ferry. My go-to stop for refreshments. Definitely worth a try!

Timmy F.

Yelp
Great coffee and sandwiches! I ordered the mountain top, which was piled high with thin sliced juicy turkey. The bacon was perfectly crisp, and the sourdough was soft and fresh. Delicious! I also tried a pistachio latte, which was good. Nutty, and not overwhelmingly sweet. Well worth a stop, and the outdoor seating area was great.

Becky A.

Yelp
Friendly service location. The menu has a lot of variety! Nice atmosphere. We were there Monday. Highly recommend. We will defiantly go back

S. K.

Yelp
Typical hole in the with super good sandwiches. You can grab and go or sit outside. Nice breakfast and coffees and really good sandwiches Don't miss this olace
google avatar

Jerry X.

Yelp
We came in after a trek through the Maryland heights trail looking for some iced coffee. They have quite an eclectic menu of drinks, and their menu is a bit of a scavenger hunt, spread across the various chalkboards in the store. That being said, they have pretty much every type of coffee you can ask for, so this is definitely the place to be if you need to cool down. They have convenient outdoor covered seating as well. The staff is also super accommodating and nice. Feel free to make a stop here!
google avatar

Danny K.

Yelp
This place sells amazing French Toast muffins! I have not tried any of the other dishes, but I always come here for their muffins, as it taste sweet, yet light, and whenever I stop by, I order at least half a dozen or more!
google avatar

Lottie Y.

Yelp
There aren't many places open there. This place offers decent food and coffee was just ok. I hope there will be more options.

Cory L.

Yelp
This was our first time eating here and the food was amazing. Best sandwiches we ever had. I would recommend the John Brown and the BLT. The service was amazing.

Jenifer K.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. The entire staff and the ownership is incredibly welcoming and accommodating. Their breakfast BLT sandwich is my favorite, but all the sandwiches are amazing and served on fresh baked bread. GF bread also available!
google avatar

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches and coffee. I had the confluence and the horseradish aoli added that perfect brain zing. Totally delicious! Highly recommend for your post hike meal.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
OMG, could they fit any more chocolate chips in one cookie. Generally I prefer the more crunchy chocolate chip cookies, but this one was so... so fresh and gooey, just like mama used to make. And the wait staff could not have been more friendly!Amanda, behind the counter not only took my order, but came out to the three tiered Battle Grounds awesome umbrella clad shaded deck, and made sure everything was ok. You don't see that kind of service anymore! Thanks Battle Grounds bakery for making my trip to Harper's Ferry so very nice!
google avatar

Ariana V.

Yelp
Stopped here for coffee and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly we were served. We made a day trip to Harpers Ferry on the weekend, a notoriously busy time. Though the line was out the door, we were served quickly and received our orders without incident. My husband and I had a standard black coffee and it definitely hit the spot. My parents had a cappuccino and hot tea. The cappuccino looked especially tasty! This was definitely a cute find. We saw they served deli options, which sounded good, though we didn't end up trying anything. They also sell festive decor, candles, and souvenirs. Definitely glad we stopped by!
google avatar

Zack B.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop with deli service. If you're visiting Harpers Ferry, you'll definitely want to stop by. Their iced coffee is solid and they also do smoothies, milkshakes, and espresso beverages. I ordered a lunch sandwich too. The Mountajn Top sandwich included avocado -- a sight for sore eyes in the mountains! Staff work hard and were pleasant. It's also nice to see businesses like Battle Grounds taking appropriate measures to stop the spread of COVID. I'll be back next time I'm in Harpers Ferry!
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwiches. Great coffee (Americano). They also have a really nice outdoor seating area with a great view. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
This is becoming my favorite place to get coffee and a snack, after walking around the town. Great portion size for the money you spend. They carry bottles of soda and water, also deceit price for a tourist town. Its opens earlier than the other business in town, great for the early birds, like me. Lol They are always friendly and cook your food on the spot, nothing sits under a heat lamp. There is some bar stool seating, so you can seat and eat or charge your phone. The bathrooms are small but clean. You can get hearty food, sweets, baked goods and even candles and other cute items, less expensive than some of the other places in town. I also bring my transgender cousin with me and have never had an issue, everyone is respectful and kind. I will continue to eat here anytime I'm in town.
google avatar

Juliette M.

Yelp
Such a cute little bakery in Harpers Ferry! We got a lot of bread and some of their refrigerated products as well. Everything was so good. The people working there are so welcoming and we were chatting with a few of them when we were there. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Ty D.

Yelp
Had a maple spiced latte. No flavor in it at all. They're out of Apple fritters at 1015am. The eclair was only okay. Too sweet.

George R.

Yelp
Our group of 10 got patient, courteous, and quick service from Shelly and Amber (Ashely?) to pick up food a few hours later. Food was ready,, neatly labeled for each person, and delicious!
google avatar

Gregory R.

Yelp
Made a stop after a long hike up the trail. Glad I dropped in. Sandwiches were loaded and fresh. Great little sandwich spot if you are in town.
google avatar

Austin T.

Yelp
Great flavor variety if you're an iced coffee person, non dairy options as well. Stopped here after a hike and the meal really hit the spot! Would come again
